The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board and listen up. Rusty here, and I've been staring at the charts for El Mongol. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but there's some real magic brewing if you're patient.
To kick things off, the water is running at 71°, which is a touch warmer than we'd normally expect for this time of year – a nice little bonus for the skin.
We've got to be honest, the next week or so is pretty grim. Nothing really going on until Thursday, the 20th of August. The swell energy is weak, barely registering, and the winds are all over the place. It's a flat spell you'd use to fix your dings or clean the wax off your deck.
Things start to stir on Thursday afternoon, the 20th. That NNW swell bumps up to about 5 feet with a period of 12 seconds. The wave energy jumps significantly and with that glassy wind, the forecast is saying "good surf conditions". That afternoon session looks like the first real chance for a wave.
Friday the 21st continues that trend. Morning sees about 5 feet from the NNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is dead calm – glassy as a mirror. Energy is pumping. The afternoon holds similar size at about 5 feet with glassy conditions again. Thursday afternoon through Friday is your first standout window. It's not huge, but it'll be clean and fun.
The next few days after that drop back to very ordinary surf. We get a little bump on the 24th and 25th of August, but the winds are a mess with cross-on conditions. It’s just messy.
Now, hold on to your leashes, because the real standout is shaping up for the very end of the month. Mark your calendars for Monday the 31st of August. The morning shows a 3 feet swell from the NNW, but check the period: 17 seconds. That's a seriously long period groundswell. The combined energy is massive, and it's dead calm (0 mph wind). The model is calling it "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." For a reef break like El Mongol, that long-period energy running into the reef is going to produce some absolute bombs. The shape will be excellent, and the lineup will be heavy. This is the one to wait for.
It stays solid into Tuesday the 1st of September, with a 8 feet swell from the NNW at 14 seconds. Energy is through the roof. However, the winds swing cross-shore. That's still a massive swell, but the conditions won't be as pristine as Monday. This size is firmly in expert territory only.
So to sum it up: there's a lot of flat or poor days, but don't get discouraged. The glassy conditions on Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st give you a couple of solid, clean days. The absolute best on offer is the morning of Monday the 31st of August. That's your winner. Set an alarm.
Stay stoked.
