The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s a beauty of a window shaping up for El Mongol next week if you’re patient.
The first few days are pretty flat and quiet. Sunday the 23rd starts with a tiny 3 ft swell from the NNE, period a short 6 seconds, and combined energy is weak at 101. It’s glassy in the morning, so you could get a grovel on a foamie, but by afternoon the wind swings cross-on and it’s messy. Monday and Tuesday (24th and 25th) are even smaller – we’re talking 2 ft and 0.7 ft – with hardly any energy (47 and 28). It’s a real lull. The water is sitting at 71°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’s comfortable.
Things finally start to wake up on Thursday morning the 27th. The swell jumps to 5 ft from the WNW, period a punchy 8 seconds, and the energy jumps to 271 (moderate). The wind is glassy, absolutely glassy. That’s a solid session for intermediates – clean, fun waves under 5 ft. Thursday afternoon gets a bit choppy as the wind picks up, but the morning is the pick of the early week.
Friday the 28th gets big – 10 ft from the NW, period 12 seconds, and the energy is a massive 2699 (very strong). That’s expert territory. The wind is cross-onshore and choppy, so it’s not clean, and honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Too big and messy for most.
Now, the standout. Saturday morning the 29th is where it’s at. The swell drops to a meaty 7 ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, combined energy is still strong at 909. The wind is glassy again. That’s a proper, clean, powerful wave for experienced surfers. It’s not for beginners (over 5 ft), but for anyone with a bit of paddle fitness, it’s going to be a ripper of a session. Crowds are possible at El Mongol (it’s “often” crowded), so get there early.
Sunday the 30th morning is still fun with 5 ft from the NNW and glassy conditions, but the energy drops to 326. A solid follow-up session.
Looking further out, the second week has some promise but less certainty. Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st are small, clean, but weak. Then on Sunday the 6th of September, the swell starts to build again – 6 ft from the NNW, period 11 seconds, energy 700 (moderate). Monday morning the 7th of September is the real long-range standout: 8 ft from the NNW, period 12 seconds, a massive 1749 energy, and glassy wind. That’s excellent, heavy surf for experienced surfers. It’s a week away, so keep an eye on it, but the signs are promising.
So, the best on offer: Saturday morning the 29th for a clean, powerful 7 ft NW swell, and keep an eye on Monday morning the 7th of September for what could be a cracker. Thursday morning the 27th is a good warm-up.
Rusty.
