Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for El Mongol.
To be straight with you, this is a tough stretch. For the next couple of weeks, we’re looking at a real flat spell with mostly tiny, weak swell and pretty ordinary conditions most days. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 68°.
The first real glimpse of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Sunday morning, July 12th. That morning, we get a bit of a bump – 2 ft from the NW with a period of 9 seconds and glassy conditions from a light NNE breeze. The combined energy is 100 (moderate). It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about. Just a little knee-to-waist high slop with clean conditions. The afternoon though, the wind swings onshore, and it’s back to poor surf.
After that, we’re into another long, lean stretch. Tiny swell, mostly under 2 ft, with light onshore or cross-onshore winds. The energy readings drop way down into the teens and twenties (weak). A few mornings like Thursday July 16th, Saturday July 18th, and Sunday July 19th show glassy conditions, but the swell is barely a ripple at 0.7 to 1 ft. Not worth paddling out for.
The one day that stands out as the best on offer is Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd. The swell jumps to 5 ft from the WNW, with a short 6-second period. The combined energy hits 179 (moderate), which is the highest we see in the whole run. The wind is light and cross-shore, coming from the NNE. Now, the 5 ft is right on the edge for beginners, and that short period means it’ll be a bit bumpy and soft, but it’s the most size we get. It won’t be a classic, but for size-starved locals, it’s something.
Given this is a fairly exposed reef that likes a clean groundswell, the long gap of weak, short period swell and mostly onshore or cross winds makes this a pretty bleak outlook. The setup might look more interesting for kite surfing on those bigger, windier days than for paddle surfing.
Rusty, signing off.
