Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening at El Mongol for the next couple of weeks.
Right out of the gate, we’ve got a little spike of energy that’s worth getting excited about. Friday the 3rd of July is the standout. We’re looking at a clean 4ft NW swell rolling in with a 10-second period, combined energy of 340 – that’s solid, moderate energy. The wind is a light 6 mph from the ENE, blowing cross-offshore, which means the face will be nice and clean. The water temperature is sitting at 69°, which is much warmer than we’d expect for this time of year (anomaly of 5°), so it’s going to feel more like summer than winter. Friday morning is the pick; by afternoon the wind picks up and gets a bit cross, and it just doesn’t have the same quality.
Saturday morning, the 4th, has dropped a touch to 3ft, but it’s still a clean, cross-off wind from the east. The energy is down to 170, so it’s weaker, but there’ll be a few fun ones for a smaller board. Sunday the 5th is smaller again at 2ft, and while the wind stays favorable, the energy is pretty low at 111. It’s surfable, but ordinary.
Then it gets quiet. From Monday the 6th all the way through to mid-July, we’ve got a long stretch of tiny waves – you’re looking at 1ft to 3ft for days on end, with a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind. The energy readings drop right down, often under 100, some days even in the low 20s and 30s. That’s weak. Don’t bother paddling out for that.
There’s a glimmer around Monday the 13th with a brief pulse of 3ft from the NW, but it’s got an onshore wind ruining it – just a poor, mushy situation.
The end of the second week starts to look a bit more promising, but it’s still a long-range call. Saturday the 18th of July afternoon shows a building trend. A 4ft NW swell, 9-second period, combined energy of 304 – back into moderate strength. Wind is from the ENE at 9 mph, cross-off, and the report says “expect good surf conditions.” It’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it, but that afternoon session has potential to be the next real proper session after this Friday.
Overall, this spot is pretty consistent, so it shouldn’t be flat forever. But between the 6th and the 15th, you’re looking at a solid week and a half of nothing worth paddling for unless you’re just trying to tan your board. For now, Friday morning the 3rd of July is your window, and maybe, just maybe, that Saturday afternoon the 18th.
Stay wet,
Rusty
