The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for El Mongol.
Alright, we’ve got a bit of a waiting game on our hands. The first week or so is looking pretty average, with a lot of small, weak swell and not much in the way of quality. The first worthwhile suggestion doesn’t pop up until the morning of Thursday, 27th August. We’ll get a pulse of energy with a 4ft swell from the WNW, period around 8 seconds, and the combined energy at 235 (moderate). The wind is glassy, so it’ll be clean, but the conditions are still described as just “surfable” rather than anything special. That morning is the pick of a pretty poor bunch early on.
Now, the real standout is on Saturday, 5th September. This is the one to circle. The morning shows a clean 4ft swell from the NW, with a longer period of 10 seconds, pushing the combined energy up to 352 (moderate). The wind is glassy, and the forecast actually says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s our best bet by a long shot. The water temp is sitting at 71°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice bonus.
There’s another spike on Friday, 28th August, but I wouldn’t get too excited. The swell is 10ft from the NW with a period of 11 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 3755 – that’s strong to very strong. But it’s coming with a 12 mph cross-onshore wind, making it choppy and messy. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, the conditions are poor. The setup at El Mongol is a reef, so a long-period groundswell like that can actually work well, but the wind kills it.
The rest of the window is mostly small, weak, or blown out. There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations from the 22nd to the 27th, and then another lull after the 27th afternoon until that Saturday morning on the 5th. The Saturday afternoon on the 5th is still surfable but the wind turns cross-onshore, so the morning is the clear winner.
So, to sum it up: the best surf on offer is the morning of Saturday, 5th September. Clean glass, solid NW swell, and decent energy. A few weeks away, so keep an eye on it, but that’s your target.
Rusty.
