The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and let’s have a look at what’s coming up for El Mongol over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a pretty quiet start. The first few days are looking flat and messy, nothing worth paddling out for. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are a write-off with tiny 0.7ft swell and cross-onshore winds. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We start to see a little life on Sunday the 19th morning – glassy conditions with 1ft swell from the NNW, but it’s still too weak to get excited about. The afternoon picks up to 3ft, but period drops to 6 seconds and wind goes cross-shore, so it’s bumpy. The combined swell energy is still low (85).
Now, Monday the 20th morning is where things get interesting. Swell jumps to 4ft from the NNE, period 7 seconds, and the energy reads 211 – moderate. Winds are light cross-onshore, so it’s a bit lumpy. The afternoon gets cleaner with a cross-off breeze and 6ft swell, but that’s pushing into the 5ft mark, so it may be a bit much for beginners. That’s a solid, surfable wave for intermediates though.
Tuesday the 21st keeps it going: morning has 5ft from the NNE, clean with cross-off wind, energy at 202. Afternoon builds to 7ft from the NE, energy 421 – that’s moderate-strong, but the wind picks up to 12 mph, so it’s a bit blown out. The swell is still short period (7 seconds), so it’s not super clean, but there’s power.
Wednesday the 22nd morning is a beauty – glassy, 4ft from the NNE, energy 130. That’s a clean, fun wave for a surf. The afternoon gets choppy again.
We hit a bit of a lull from Thursday the 23rd through to Sunday the 27th. Swell drops back under 3ft, and the energy is weak (under 100 most of the time). The glassy mornings on the 24th, 25th, and 26th are nice for a paddle, but the waves are tiny and poor.
Now, the real standout is brewing for the end of the month. Monday the 28th morning shows 4ft from the NNW with a period of 10 seconds and a long-period groundswell feel. Energy jumps to 392. The wind is onshore, so it’s a bit messy, but the afternoon goes to 3ft with a 13-second period – that’s very long period, and the energy hits 431. That kind of swell is best at a reef like El Mongol, but it could be a bit straight for the beach.
Tuesday the 29th morning is the best of the lot: 5ft from the NW, period 11 seconds, energy 522 – strong. Onshore wind again, but that’s a powerful, clean groundswell. The afternoon stays similar, but wind turns cross-on.
Wednesday the 30th holds onto 5ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, energy 359. Still solid.
But the real crown jewel is Friday the 31st morning. We’ve got 6ft from the NNW, period 9 seconds, energy 623 – that’s strong. The wind is cross-off and light, making for clean, lined-up waves. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s big enough for intermediates and above, but not too gnarly. The afternoon gets cross-shore and messy, so get in early.
Saturday the 1st of August has a glassy morning with 4ft from the NNW, energy 168, but it’s a bit of a comedown after the Friday.
So, overall: the first week is mostly flat. The second week has a few good days, especially the 21st and 22nd, but the absolute standout is Friday the 31st of July. That’s a high-energy, clean swell with good direction for El Mongol. Crowds are often here, so expect company, but the quality will be worth it.
Stay frothy,
Rusty
