The Lowdown

Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a grim outlook. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly anything worth paddling out for. The first real chance of something, and I mean a slim chance, doesn't come around until the 17th of August.

For the first twelve days, from the 5th all the way through the 16th, it's a write-off. The swell is tiny, the wind is almost constantly coming from the north or north-northeast, which is cross or cross-on at Los Gigantes. The combined wave energy is mostly weak, with values well under 165 for most of that time – barely a bump. Wednesday the 5th, for instance, the swell is a pathetic 1ft from the WNW with a period of 10 seconds, and the energy is only 40. Thursday and Friday the 6th and 7th are similar – poor conditions with cross-onshore breezes. We get a bit more size on the weekend of the 9th, with swell hitting 5ft, but that's short-period junk at 6 seconds with a cross-on wind. It's messy, choppy, and just no fun. The water temp is sitting at a very comfy 74°, which is about average for this time of year, but that’s small comfort when there’s no surf.

Now, there is a tiny glimmer on Monday the 17th. We get a little pulse of SSW groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 140, but the wave size is only 2ft with a very long period of 14 seconds. The wind is light and cross-on, so it might be glassy enough for a longboard. But let’s be honest, it’s marginal. If you’re desperate and got a log, it might be worth a sunrise paddle.

Wednesday the 19th also shows a little SSW pulse with 2ft swell at 14 seconds and a clean cross-off breeze from the NE. The energy is moderate at 137, but it’s still a very small wave. The rest of the second week is just more of the same: small, weak, and uninviting.

So, the bottom line? There’s no standout here. The entire 16-day window is a real bummer. For a spot like Los Gigantes that can be very consistent, this blank run is a bit unusual, but it happens. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but for now, you’re better off finding something else to do.

Rusty.
