The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let's cut to it. The next two weeks are going to be a test of patience for any surfer. It’s a grim outlook, with the first possible session not even showing up until the 3rd of August, and even that is a huge “maybe.” We're in for a long stretch of junky, wind-blown conditions.
Our only option on the map is Ghost Town, a heavy expert reef that doesn’t back down. The water’s sitting at 73°, which is pretty standard for the season. The week starts on Monday afternoon, the 3rd, with a cross-onshore breeze blowing at 19 mph. There’s a 5ft swell, but it’s weak and short-period, so the ocean will be a mess. It’s just not worth suiting up for that.
From Tuesday the 4th through Wednesday the 5th, it doesn’t get any better. The cross-onshore winds keep the surface lumpy. The swell does push up to nearly 7ft on Wednesday, with a touch more energy, but the wind is going to kill any chance of a clean face. It’s just a lot of moving water going nowhere.
Then the wind swings onshore from Thursday the 6th all the way through the 14th. The swell hovers in the 6ft to 8ft range, and the energy builds, but it’s all for nothing with a relentless onshore breeze. Ghost Town is a reef, so it can handle some wind, but not this constant punish. The first week is a complete loss.
I won't lie to you, the second week isn't much better, but there’s a slight chance things change. Around the 17th and 18th, the wind is forecast to ease off to a moderate breeze. We could see a 5ft to 5ft swell and, crucially, the period stretches out to 9 seconds on the 18th. That’s the only real window where the conditions might align, but it's a long way off, so don't book your flights yet.
Honestly, there’s no standout day in this whole stretch. The swell gets big, over 8ft on the 15th, but it’s onshore and messy, which is only good for the kite surfers. For now, it’s a waiting game. We’re hoping that late-period bump at the end of the run comes through, but for now, keep the boards in the bag.
