The Lowdown
Hey everyone, it’s Rusty. Let’s be real – the next 16 days at Morro Negro (reef and point) are looking grim. The wind is a constant headache, and the surf quality is shot. From the start right through to the end, there’s a big gap of nothing good.
It kicks off on Thursday, August 6th. The swell is 7 ft from the NE, with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 692. But the wind is screaming from the NNE at 22 mph, cross-on, making it lumpy and poor. Not worth paddling out. The water temp is 74°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year.
That same mess just keeps going. Friday the 7th has 6 ft to 7 ft from the NNE, still short period, with cross-on winds from the N at 19-22 mph. Saturday the 8th? Same – 7 ft, cross-on, messy. Sunday the 9th, Monday the 10th, all the way through, it’s cross-on winds, lumpy, choppy, and the score is a flat zero. The swell is often in the 5 ft to 7 ft range, but with that wind, it’s just a mess. On the 10th and 11th, the wind hits 25 mph, making it even worse. The combined energy stays moderate, bouncing between 400 and 500.
There’s a slight drop in swell around the 17th and 18th of August, down to 3 ft to 5 ft, and the period is a weak 6-7 seconds, but the wind is still cross-on from the NNE. The energy drops to low values (137-217). Still poor.
Then, around the 20th of August, the wind backs off a little – gentle to moderate breeze from the NNW, but still cross-on. The swell picks up to 6 ft to 6 ft from the N with a period of 9 seconds on the 20th, and the energy climbs to 515. But even then, the forecast still says “poor surf conditions.” The wind direction is shifting, but it’s not clean. The period is just average, not a long groundswell that could save this spot.
So, what’s the best on offer? There isn’t one. The whole 16-day window is a dud. With a reef and point break that’s consistent but getting hammered by cross-on winds, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The swell is too funky, the wind is too strong, and the quality just isn’t there. Keep the board in the car and check back in a week. Sometimes it’s just a blank run, and this is one of those times.
