The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next couple of weeks. Straight up, it’s a tough run for Punta Usaje. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for a proper surf session, so don’t hold your breath.

The core problem is a relentless cross-off wind hammering the place. It’s coming from the north and north-northeast, blowing at 15 to 22 mph most days. That’s a fresh breeze that’s just ripping the face off what little shape the swell has. The swell itself is a short-period, wind-affected mess, coming in from the NNE most of the time. The combined energy is moderate, sitting in the 200-500 range, but it’s all chop and no power. The wave comment is almost always "poor surf conditions," which tells you everything.

From Saturday the 8th of August right through to Friday the 21st of August, it’s a dead zone. The swell hangs around 5 ft to 7 ft, but with that cross-off wind and a period of only 7-8 seconds, it’s just a bumpy, blown-out ocean. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild there.

There are a couple of days around the 16th and 21st of August that get a "marginal" tag, but even then, the wind is still a moderate cross-off, and the swell is weak or short-period. On the 21st, the period does stretch to 10 seconds, which is a bit more groundswell character, but with 5 ft and a moderate breeze, it’s just not enough to get excited about.

The only thing that changes is the wind drops a bit towards the end of the run. On Sunday the 23rd of August, the swell drops right off to 3 ft with a tiny 145 combined energy, and the wind is still a moderate cross-off. Even if that wind swung offshore, there’s barely any wave to ride.

For a spot that’s a reef and point, this is a grim outlook. The setup is likely more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, given the constant wind and poor wave quality. Honestly, don’t bother driving out. It’s a blank run. The forecast might change, but for now, the surf is a no-go.

Rusty.
