The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so let’s get into it.
The opening days of this window are looking like the clear highlights. We’ve got a solid, long-period SW groundswell lining up with clean conditions, and that’s a combo that’s hard to beat. The energy is proper strong, too. This is definitely the window to be looking at if you want the best of what’s on offer.
Wednesday, August 19th is your standout day. Bondo Kodi (Bondo-Kodi) is the place to be, and it’s got everything working in its favor. We’re looking at a solid 8ft of SW swell, but here’s the kicker – the period is a very long 18 seconds. This is proper groundswell, the kind that wraps around points with real purpose. The wind is a light 3 mph easterly, which is cross-offshore and will leave the face as clean as a whistle. The water temp is 79°, which is pretty much spot-on average for this time of year. The energy reading is a strong 3473, so there’s plenty of push. This is a day for experienced surfers. It’s a point break that’s fairly consistent, so you won’t be sitting around too long.
The afternoon continues the theme, with the swell nudging up to 8ft and the energy jumping to 4203. The wind stays light at 3 mph from the ESE, keeping things ultra-clean. It’s more of the same excellent conditions, so if you can get out of work early, do it.
Thursday, August 20th is still good, but the wind changes things a bit. The swell is up to 10ft in the morning with a 16-second period, and the energy is still strong at 4122. However, the wind swings around to a 6 mph SE, which is more cross-shore. It’s not ruined, but it's going to have a few more lines on it, not the perfect surface we saw the day before. The afternoon drops to an 8ft swell, but the wind picks up to 9 mph ESE, which is cross-off again, leaving it clean. Still a solid option.
From Friday, August 21st onward, things get a bit more ordinary. The swell drops back to the 7ft to 7ft range. The period remains healthy, but the winds become more variable. Friday morning has a light 3 mph SE cross-shore, but the afternoon sees it pick up to 9 mph, creating some cross-chop. It’s surfable, but it loses that magic of the first two days.
The weekend looks like a write-off for great waves. The swell backs off slightly, but the winds get messy. Saturday and Sunday have stronger, more onshore winds, with Saturday afternoon seeing 9 mph SSE, and Sunday afternoon blowing a 16 mph SSE cross-shore that will chop things up. The wave quality drops, and the energy starts to wane. It’s not worth getting excited about.
Early next week, Monday and Tuesday, sees a bit of a rebound in energy, but the winds remain tricky—mostly light cross-onshore conditions. There's still surf, but you'll be working for it.
There’s a noticeable drop around Wednesday, August 27th, where the swell really fades to under 3ft. This will be a quiet spell. If you're a beginner, this is about the only time things might look approachable, but don't expect much.
But then, get this – around Friday, August 28th, a new pulse of SW swell shows up. It’s back up to 8ft with a 17-second period and a strong energy reading of 3166. The morning wind is a light 6 mph WNW cross-shore. It looks promising, but it's far out, so treat it as a promising possibility rather than a sure thing. The following days see it slowly fade again.
Looking into the first days of September, the models are hinting at another strong push. Tuesday, September 1st and Wednesday, September 2nd are showing potential for some serious size, with 8ft to 10ft SW swells and clean cross-offshore ESE winds in the afternoons. The energy readings are very strong, 3710 and 4230 respectively. This looks like another excellent window, but it's a long way off, so the specifics are less reliable. Still, it’s something to keep on the radar.
The takeaway? Hit it hard on Wednesday, August 19th and Thursday, August 20th. That's your best bet. There’s another potentially fun window at the end of the month, but it’s a long-range call. For the most part, the middle of the period is average, with a few days of poor winds. This is a spot that’s fairly consistent though, so it won't be flat for long.
Rusty, out.
