The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here with the lowdown.
First up, we got a solid run of swell coming into Bondo Kodi (point) . The start of the week is all about clean conditions and building energy, so get your board ready. Water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year – nothing to write home about.
Monday the 17th kicks off with a glassy morning. A 5ft SSW groundswell is rolling in, with a period of 14 seconds and a moderate wave energy reading of 1081. The wind is barely a whisper from the south, so it’s gonna be clean out there. This is good, powerful stuff for an advanced surfer, but it’s a bit much for a beginner with that 5ft.
Tuesday the 18th is where things start to get really interesting. The swell backs off slightly to 4ft in the morning, but the period jumps to a very long 16 seconds and the energy climbs to a strong 1972. The wind is light east-southeast, which is cross-offshore and will groom those waves beautifully. That's a quality, clean day right there. By the afternoon, the swell bumps back up to 5ft, the wind goes glassy again, and the combined energy hits 2573. This is a proper groundswell.
Now, the standout. Wednesday the 19th is the one you've been waiting for. Morning brings a 8ft SW groundswell at a very long 18 seconds, with wave energy rocketing up to 3511. The wind is a light easterly, making it glassy. This is expert territory – the size is just under 8ft, the period is long, and it'll be a fast, powerful beast, especially for a point break. If you are an experienced surfer, this is the morning to be in the water. The afternoon jumps to 8ft and 4355 energy, but the wind shifts cross-shore, taking a little shine off. Stick to the morning glass.
Thursday the 20th keeps the size up with a 10ft swell in the morning from the SSW, period at 16 seconds and energy at 4122. That’s big, heavy, expert-only territory. The wind is cross-shore, and with a beach/reef setup, that's a bit of a mess. It looks more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfing. The afternoon cleans up nicely though: a 8ft SW swell with a cross-offshore breeze makes for a much better session for the experts.
The run of big swell continues through Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd, with 8ft to 8ft waves and periods between 15 and 17 seconds. Friday has cross-shore wind, so it’s not perfect, but Saturday morning delivers another glassy window with a 8ft SSW groundswell and energy at 2850. That's another top call for advanced crew.
From Sunday the 23rd right through to Monday the 1st of September, the quality drops off. The wind turns mostly cross-onshore or onshore, the swell height varies between 4ft and 6ft, and the energy stays mostly in the three-digit range. There are a few brief windows of cleaner conditions, like Monday morning the 24th with light winds, and Friday morning the 28th with another glassy 6ft SW swell, but the consistency for good, clean waves is gone. The last real highlight is Monday afternoon the 31st of August, where a 4ft SW groundswell at 15 seconds comes with a cross-offshore breeze again, making for a clean but smaller end-of-run session.
So, the best is right in the middle of the week: Wednesday the 19th is the absolute standout, followed by Tuesday the 18th and Saturday the 22nd mornings. After that, we’re waiting on a change.
Rusty out.
