The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. We've got a solid 16-day window ahead at Bondo Kodi, a point break for advanced surfers. Don't let the "marginal" tags fool you; there's a heap of energy coming through, but the wind is rarely your friend. The standout is a quick window of perfection on the morning of the 26th of August. Let's get into it.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird there.
The whole period is dominated by a powerful, long-period SW groundswell. The combined energy is massive, regularly hitting high three-digit and even four-digit values, so there's plenty of power in the water. The issue is the wind. For the first week, from Saturday the 22nd through to Tuesday the 25th, you're looking at a constant cross-on or cross breeze from the S or SSE, 6-12 mph. It's not totally blown out, but it's a persistent chop that will keep things from being perfect. Swell sits around 5 ft to 8 ft, with a long period of 14-16 seconds. This is a proper groundswell. At a point break, that long period is a dream.
Then comes Wednesday the 26th of August. The morning session is the pick of the entire forecast. The wind drops to a glassy 3 mph from the SW, and the swell is a clean 6 ft from the SW at 14 seconds. The combined energy is still strong. The forecast says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." That's the one. The afternoon gets a bit of a cross-breeze, so get out early.
The swell drops a little on the 27th, down to 4 ft, before kicking back hard. Friday the 28th of August sees the biggest swell of the run: 8 ft from the SW, with a period of 17 seconds. The combined energy screams up high. This is a lot of power. It's a cross-on wind in the morning, which is a shame, but it's only 6 mph. For a point break, 8 ft is expert territory, especially with that kind of energy. The afternoon gets a stronger cross-breeze (15 mph), so the morning is the go.
The end of the first week and into the second week sees a bit of a mixed bag. The 30th of August has a clean, cross-off afternoon breeze from the ESE at 12 mph, with a 7 ft SSE swell, but the period drops to 9 seconds. That's a short-period wind swell, not the same quality.
Looking ahead into the first week of September, the pattern continues. The 1st of September has a 5 ft SW swell with a 16-second period, but the wind is messy. The 2nd of September is another big push: 8 ft SW at 18 seconds, with a massive combined energy. The morning has a light 3 mph cross-on, which is a lot better than it sounds. Another one for the early birds.
The 5th of September morning is interesting: the only truly offshore wind of the whole forecast, 3 mph from the WSW. The swell is 5 ft from the SW at 14 seconds. It's a smaller day, but clean. The energy is a bit lower, but that offshore wind at a point is a treat.
After that, the swell starts to fade. The 6th of September is a 5 ft SW swell with a 13-second period, but the cross-on wind is up to 9 mph, and the energy is dropping. It's winding down.
Overall, the best on offer is the morning of the 26th of August – glassy, solid, clean. The second standout is the morning of the 2nd of September for a bigger, more powerful session. The 5th of September morning is a wildcard for clean, smaller waves with an offshore wind. The rest of the time, you'll be fighting the wind, but the swell is there.
Rusty.
