The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s going on at Marosi.

Right off the bat, we’ve got a steady run of SW groundswell rolling in, but the wind is almost always a cross-onshore breeze, keeping things a bit lumpy. The water temperature is about 79°, pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises.

The first few days, starting Friday, July 31st, the swell is around 4ft with a very long 17-second period out of the SSW. That long-period groundswell packs decent energy but it’s coming in on a cross-onshore wind, so it’s choppy and not well-shaped. Saturday, August 1st through Sunday, August 2nd sees the swell building to 5ft to 6ft, still with that long 16-second period, but again the wind stays cross-onshore, so the surface is messy. Not worth getting too excited about.

Monday, August 3rd and Tuesday, August 4th, the swell drops back a touch to 5ft-6ft, period drops slightly to 14-15 seconds, but the wind is still cross-onshore. Nothing clean.

Now, later in the window, things get bigger. Around Thursday, August 6th, the swell pushes up over 7ft, hitting 8ft by the afternoon, period holding at 17 seconds, and combined energy jumps over 3000. But the wind is still cross-onshore, making it a choppy, bumpy affair. By Friday, August 7th and into Saturday, August 8th, we’re looking at 8ft solid, energy over 3000, but the wind is up to 12 mph cross-onshore. That’s big, powerful surf, but it’s going to be a battle—definitely for experienced surfers only, and the chop will spoil the ride.

The standout day in the whole run actually comes on Thursday, August 13th. That morning, the swell is 8ft from the SSW with a 17-second period and energy of 3763, and the wind finally eases to a light 6 mph cross-onshore. It’s still not glassy, but the light wind means smaller ripples and much cleaner conditions than anything else in the forecast. By the afternoon, the swell hits 10ft with the same long period, energy surging to 5905, and still only a light breeze. That’s the pick of the bunch—big, powerful groundswell with manageable wind. The caveat is that with that long period, Marosi being a reef break, it should handle that energy well and offer some proper walls, but it’ll be a heavy, expert-only wave by the afternoon.

The rest of the second week stays in the 7ft to 10ft range but the wind picks back up to 9-12 mph cross-onshore, so it’s back to choppy, less appealing conditions.

There’s really one true standout here: the afternoon of Thursday, August 13th. Big swell, decent period, and the lightest wind of the whole run. If you’re an experienced crew and can handle the size, that’s your window. The rest is consistent but messy.

Rusty.
