The Lowdown
Alright, listen up. Rusty here. We’re looking at a solid run of groundswell for G-Land. The immediate forecast is a bit average, but the trade-off is a long, clean window of consistent swell right through the back half of the month and into the first week of September. The water is 77°, which is a touch colder than average for this time of year, but nothing too wild.
The first few days from Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 25th are a bit average. You’re looking at consistent 6 ft to 7 ft SSW swell, but it’s a bit wind-affected and the data flags it as marginal. The combined energy is moderate to strong (2261 to 1471), but the wind is a cross-off ESE to SE at 12 mph. It’s surfable, but it’s not the main event.
Things start to turn the corner on Wednesday morning the 26th. The swell drops a touch to 6 ft from the SSW, with a period of 14 seconds, and the wind drops to a gentle 9 mph cross-off. The energy is still moderate (1049), but the conditions are clean and the forecast is excellent for experienced surfers. Thursday afternoon the 27th is a real standout for the early part of the run. The swell comes from the SW with a very long 20-second period, and the energy jumps way up (2692). The swell is 5 ft, and with those long, clean lines, it will be a proper G-Land day.
Now, circling Friday the 28th of August on the calendar. That’s the pick of the whole forecast. The morning session is looking absolutely pumping. Solid 10 ft SSW groundswell with a 16-second period, and the combined energy is massive (4122). That’s proper, strong energy. The wind is a gentle 9 mph cross-off from the SE. This is an expert-only day. That 10 ft is well over the 8 ft mark, so if you’re not a pro, stay on the beach and watch. The swell direction is a perfect SSW, which is right in the optimum zone for the reef. It will be heavy, powerful, and absolutely grinding down the point. Crowds are sometimes an issue here, but for that size, it’ll be a select crew.
Saturday the 29th is still excellent, with a 7 ft SSW swell and 15-second period, clean again in the morning. The energy is still very strong (2431). The following week, from the 31st of August through the 3rd of September, keeps the run going. The SW swell hangs around at 6 ft to 7 ft, with periods staying long (16 to 18 seconds). The wind stays light and cross-off. It’s not the spike of the 28th, but it’s a solid, clean, long-period groundswell that will keep the reef firing. The energy stays in the strong range (1554 to 2462).
The first week of September fades a bit. The 4th and 5th are smaller, but then a new pulse of SSW swell shows up on the 6th and 7th of September. It’s a bit smaller period (13-14 seconds) and the energy is moderate, but it keeps the stretch alive. The best bet is unmissable: get on the Friday the 28th morning session if you can handle the size. It’s a classic G-Land bomb.
Rusty.
