The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Lakey Pipe over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of surf coming in right from the start. This is a classic reef break that loves a good SW groundswell, and it’s lookin’ like we’re gonna get plenty of that. The water’s sittin’ at a warm 80°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The action kicks off Thursday the 20th of August. It’s a bit cloudy, but don’t let that fool ya. We’re seein’ a strong 8ft SW groundswell rollin’ in with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is pumping at (3841), and with a light 6 mph cross-off breeze from the SE, it’s gonna be clean. This is a serious standout for experienced surfers only – that’s a lot of water moving around out there.
That swell hangs in through Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd. We’re talkin’ 7ft to 8ft SSW/SW groundswells, with periods still in the 15 to 17 second range. The wind holds steady from the ESE to SSE at 9 mph, keepin’ it clean with that cross-off flow. The energy stays high, hovering around (2269) to (3473). This is top-tier stuff for the crew that knows what they’re doin’.
Sunday the 23rd sees a slight drop to a still-very-respectable 7ft SSW groundswell, with a 15-second period. The combined energy is still strong at (2106) to (2438). Winds are light and clean out of the SSE. It’s excellent.
Monday the 24th dips a little to 7ft, and the energy drops to around (2016) to (2057). The period is still a solid 15 to 16 seconds. The wind remains friendly. It’s still good, but perhaps not the absolute peak of the run.
Tuesday the 25th brings a bit of a lull in the morning with a 5ft swell, but it picks back up to a nice 6ft SW swell by the afternoon with a 16-second period and energy of (1602). Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th see the swell slowly ease back, with heights around 4ft to 6ft and periods dropping to 13-14 seconds. The energy is moderate, around (816) to (1138). Still clean, still good fun for a reef break, but the crowd factor is likely to be noticeable.
Now, here’s where it gets real interesting again. Friday the 28th of August, hold onto your boards. A new pulse of SW groundswell arrives, hittin’ 8ft in the morning with a 17-second period and a massive energy reading of (4839). The wind is a light 6 mph cross-off from the SSE. That is the standout of the whole forecast period for the experienced crew. The afternoon, however, gets a bit tricky; the swell pushes up to 10ft, which is gettin’ into the “too big for this break” territory, and the wind shifts to a cross-shore, so the morning is your window.
We roll into the weekend of the 29th and 30th with solid 5ft to 7ft SW groundswells, periods around 13 to 15 seconds, and a clean cross-off breeze. The energy is solid, from (993) to (2293). The consistency is good, and the quality is there for the taking.
The final week starts Monday the 31st of August with a smaller but very long-period (18-20 seconds) SW groundswell. The energy is moderate to strong (1054 to 2084), and with a light cross-off wind, it’s a great way to kick off the week. The real highlight of this second week, though, is Tuesday the 1st of September. We’ve got a 8ft SW groundswell with an 18-second period, energy readings of (3582) to (3297), and a light 6-9 mph cross-off breeze. That’s another absolute standout session, and it’s a bit less certain this far out, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
The rest of the first week of September keeps the momentum going. Wednesday the 2nd through Friday the 4th all show a consistent 7ft to 8ft SW groundswell, with periods sitting at 15-16 seconds. The wind stays in the cross-off zone, keeping things clean. This is a remarkable run of surf for this spot.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is the 8ft swell on Thursday the 20th of August and the monster pulse on Friday the 28th of August morning. The second week’s standout is definitely Tuesday the 1st of September. This reef is gonna be pumping, but it’s for the experienced lot. If you’re not in that boat, stay on the beach and watch the show.
Rusty.
