Table - best surf conditions forecast for Lakey Pipe over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here, let's get into it.
Alright, so we’ve got a solid window of surf coming up at Lakey Pipe. This is a reef break, exposed to the swell, and it’s picking up some proper energy over the next few days. The water is sitting at about 82°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, not too far off the average.
We kick things off on Wednesday morning, July 8th, with a 6ft SW swell at a very long 15 seconds. The energy is strong, coming in at 1611 (moderate to strong wave energy). It’s cross-off wind from the SE, keeping it clean. This is one for the experienced crew though – that size and power on a reef means beginners should sit this one out. The afternoon builds a touch more, hitting 7ft from the SW, with the same excellent conditions for those who know what they’re doing.
Thursday, July 9th, holds onto that size, around 7ft from the SSW in the morning, but the wind picks up to 16 mph from the ESE – still cross-off, but a bit more breeze on it. Afternoon eases back to 6ft with lighter wind. The energy stays up there, well over 1700.
Friday, July 10th, sees the swell dip a little to 5ft in the morning, but it's still packing that long 15-second period. The afternoon comes back with 6ft from the SW and a 16-second period – that’s proper groundswell, and it’s going to line up beautifully on this reef. These afternoon sessions are the real standout for the first week: clean, cross-off wind, and quality wave energy.
Saturday, July 11th, keeps it going with 5ft from the SW, though the energy drops a bit to around 1100-1200. Still a good session for intermediates with a bit of bottle. Sunday, July 12th, the swell drops significantly to 3ft-4ft, energy down to under 500. It’s still rideable for a longboard, but the juice is gone for a few days.
We have a lull from Monday, July 13th, through most of Tuesday, July 14th morning – small waves under 3ft, not worth paddling out for. Then Tuesday afternoon, the next pulse arrives: 6ft from the SSW with an 18-second period (very long period), energy jumping to 1890. The period is so long it might make the wave a bit straight on this reef, but for experienced surfers it’s still a goer.
Wednesday, July 15th, is the big one for the second week. Morning has 7ft from the SSW at 17 seconds, and the combined energy hits 2177 (strong). This is expert territory – over 7ft on a reef with that kind of power, it’s not a day for the faint-hearted. Afternoon eases slightly to 6ft.
Thursday, July 16th, holds 5ft from the SW with that sweet 15-second period, and both morning and afternoon sessions rate well – clean, cross-off winds, and consistent energy around 1100. This is a good call for intermediate to advanced surfers. Friday, July 17th, drops again a bit to 4-5ft, energy falling under 700. Still a wave, but nothing to write home about.
Saturday, July 18th, gives us another solid morning: 5ft from the SW at 15 seconds, energy back up to 1070. Clean conditions. Look out for Sunday, July 19th afternoon though – 5ft SW at 14 seconds, energy 1127, and it’s scored as excellent conditions. That’s a strong candidate for the best session of the second week.
Then Monday, July 20th, pumps up again – 7ft-7ft from the SSW, with that long period (16-17 seconds), energy peaking at 2687 in the morning. That’s very strong energy and it’s a big swell. This is for experts only. The afternoon holds at 7ft with still excellent conditions. Tuesday, July 21st, stays solid at 6ft from the SSW, energy around 1100-1170, and clean.
After that, we taper off from Wednesday, July 22nd, with 4ft and lighter wind, and then Thursday, July 23rd, we’re back down to 3ft and low energy. The run is done.
Overall, the best of the best are the Wednesday/Thursday afternoons of July 8th and 9th for that first week, and the Sunday afternoon of July 19th and the Monday of July 20th for the second week. The Monday the 20th is the biggest, so if you’re experienced and hungry, that’s the one. Crowds are likely at this break – it’s consistent and well-known, so expect company.
Stay safe out there.
