The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into the sixteen-day outlook for Lakey Pipe. We’ve got a slow start, but there’s a solid pulse of swell coming through later on.
The first few days start off a bit marginal. Sunday the 19th is small, with clean 4ft swell from the SW, but the energy is weak (676) and the conditions are just okay. The wind is a cross-off from the ESE and SE, which keeps it clean, but the waves are just not doing much. It’s a quiet start.
Monday the 20th is where things start to move. The morning swell bumps up to 5ft from the SW, with a period of 15 seconds, and the energy jumps to 1924. That’s a solid groundswell. The wind is light from the SE, a cross-off, and it’s clean. The afternoon really shines though – 7ft of SW swell, 17-second period, and a strong 2532 energy reading. This is expert territory, too big for beginners, but for experienced surfers, it’s the standout of the first week. The wind stays light and cross-off, so the reef at Lakey Pipe will be offering up some proper, long-period lines.
Tuesday the 21st sees a slight drop, with 6ft in the morning and 6ft in the afternoon, energy dropping to 1422 and 1132. It’s still clean, but the quality is a step down. Wednesday through Friday drops off further, with swell shrinking to 3ft by Friday the 24th. The energy gets weak, down to 343 on Friday afternoon. The wind stays cross-off, but there’s not much to get excited about.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are small, with 4ft and 3ft swell. The energy is low (605 and 408). The winds are light, the conditions are clean, but you’ll be scratching for scraps.
Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th are really small, with 2ft and 3ft. The period on Tuesday morning is a very long 18 seconds, but the energy is only 522. That’s a long-period groundswell, which will be tricky on a reef break like Lakey Pipe – it might break too straight and be hard to get into, but it’s clean.
Now, the real highlight comes in the second week. Wednesday the 29th shows a little bump, 4ft from the SSW, energy of 752. But Thursday the 30th is the standout. The morning has 3ft swell from the SW, but with a massive 20-second period, and energy of 1093. The afternoon is even better with 3ft and the same 20-second period, energy hitting 1232. This is very long-period groundswell, and it’s excellent for experienced surfers. The wind is light and cross-off, so the wave quality will be top-notch. Friday the 31st holds steady with 4ft from the SW, 18-second period, and energy around 1193. It’s clean, consistent, and the reef will be working.
But the biggest wave event of the whole outlook is Saturday the 1st of August. We’re looking at 7ft to 8ft of SW swell, 18-17 second period, and energy readings of 3158 and 3092. That’s a powerful, strong swell. The wind picks up to 25 km/h from the ESE, a cross-off, so it’s still clean. This is big, expert-only territory. The power is there, the energy is huge, and it’s a true event. Sunday the 2nd holds at 8ft, with energy of 2516 and 2382, and the wind eases to 15 km/h on the afternoon. That afternoon session is excellent for experts. The run finishes on Monday the 3rd of August with 6ft from the SW, 14-second period, and energy of 2389, still clean and solid.
So, the best on offer is the Monday the 20th afternoon for the first week, and the Saturday the 1st of August for the second week. The water temperature is about average for the time of year at Lakey Pipe. Crowds are often a factor here, so expect company. The direction is SW, which matches the optimum for the break. Get after it.
Rusty.
