The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in good old feet and miles.
The water is sitting at 81°, which is about average for this time of year.
Starting Tuesday 14 July, we’ve got a solid SSW groundswell running. Waves are around 6 to 6 feet, with a very long period of 18 seconds. That’s proper deep-ocean energy, and the combined energy is massive at 2,119 to 2,544. This reef break will love that long period, drawing the lines in clean. The wind is a cross-off from the SE, keeping the surface glassy. These waves are a bit on the big side, so this is for the experienced crew. The standout is Tuesday afternoon: 6 feet, 18-second period, light breeze, and clear skies. That’s the one.
Wednesday 15 July keeps it pumping. Slightly bigger in the morning at 7 feet, period dropping to 17 seconds, but still plenty of punch. Winds stay light and cross-off, water clear. The afternoon sees 7 feet with 16 seconds, still clean. The energy is well over 2,000, so the power is there.
Thursday 16 July, the swell drops to 5-6 feet, period still decent at 15 seconds, but the wind picks up to a moderate breeze. Not as pristine, but still clean. Energy drops to around 1,100.
Friday 17 July through the weekend: waves settle into the 4-5 feet range, periods around 14-16 seconds, and the wind stays a gentle cross-off. The energy is in the 700-1,200 range. The Saturday afternoon session on 18 July is a real standout: 5 feet, 15 seconds, clear skies, light breeze, and energy of 863. It’s a smaller wave, but it’ll be shaped beautifully. Perfect for the intermediate surfer.
From Sunday 19 July into the next week, there’s another pulse of 6-7 feet coming in on Monday 20 July. That Monday afternoon session is a standout: 7 feet, 16 seconds, clear skies, light breeze, and 2,201 combined energy. That’s proper, powerful swell for the experts.
After that, the size slowly fades. By the end of July, it’s down to 2-3 feet, with periods around 13-15 seconds. The energy drops into the 200-400 range, which is weak. The last few days are a flat spell, just small knee-high waves.
Best bets: Tuesday afternoon 14 July and Monday afternoon 20 July. Solid groundswell, clean conditions, and plenty of power. The reef at Lakey Pipe will handle the long period beautifully. Crowds can be likely, but for that quality, it’s worth the company.
Rusty.
