The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf lining up at Lakey Pipe over the next couple of weeks, with the first proper waves hitting from Sunday morning. It’s a reef setup, so expect critical take-offs and a fair bit of power. The water temp’s about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there.

Sunday the 23rd kicks things off with a clean 7ft SSW swell, 15-second period – proper groundswell with plenty of grunt. The wind’s a light cross-offshore from the SE at 6 mph, keeping the faces smooth. The combined energy is strong at 2168, and conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is the standout of the opening days – glassy, powerful, and consistent. The swell direction (SSW) matches the optimum SW direction nicely, and the reef will handle that long period well. Crowds are often here, so get in early.

Monday the 24th holds similar size, 7ft in the morning dropping to 7ft in the afternoon, still SSW and clean with a gentle cross-off breeze. Good surf, but not quite the crispness of Sunday.

Tuesday the 25th sees the swell ease a little – 5ft in the morning, 6ft by the afternoon, still SSW and clean. A solid day for intermediates, but not a standout.

Wednesday the 26th is consistent again with 6ft SSW swell, clean conditions both morning and afternoon. Reliable, but nothing to write home about.

Thursday the 27th drops to 3ft in the morning, but that’s a 16-second SW groundswell – long lines, though a bit small. The afternoon sees a 21-second period, which is very long, but the wind swings cross-shore and the conditions get a bit ripply. This one’s for the patient ones.

Friday the 28th is a big one – 10ft SW swell with 17-second period and combined energy of 5135. That’s huge, powerful, and only for experts. The morning looks clean with a light cross-off, but the size is serious – this is a standout if you’ve got the nerve and skill. Afternoon drops to 8ft but the wind goes cross-shore, so morning is the call.

Saturday the 29th backs off to 7ft in the morning, still clean with light cross-off winds. Afternoon gets a bit choppy. Still a good session for the experienced crew.

From Sunday the 30th through the rest of the outlook, the swell stays in the 3ft to 8ft range, mostly SSW or SW, with clean conditions and light to gentle cross-off breezes. The combined energy drops to moderate levels (655 to 2913), and the waves are more manageable for a wider range of surfers. The first week is where the real power sits – especially Sunday the 23rd and Friday the 28th. After that, it’s fun but not firing.

So, the standout days: Sunday the 23rd for that first clean, powerful groundswell, and Friday the 28th morning for the sheer size and energy – experts only.

Rusty.
