Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cookin’ at Lakey Pipe. This stretch is a long, clean run of solid swell, so don’t make other plans.
The first good waves show Friday July 3rd. We’ve got a consistent 5.9ft swell from the SSW, with a 14-second period. Wind’s a light cross-off from the SE at 6 mph, keeping it glassy and clean. The combined swell energy is 1222 (moderate to strong), so there’s plenty of punch. This is intermediate stuff—too big for beginners at over 4.9ft, but not so huge it’s only for experts. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
Saturday July 4th holds: 4.9 to 5.2ft SSW swell, 15-second period. Winds are a gentle cross-off, clean as a whistle. Energy drops slightly to 998 (moderate) in the morning, but it’s still quality. Sunday July 5th has the same size and direction, 15-second period, light cross-off—energy back up to 1310 (moderate to strong) in the morning. This Friday-to-Sunday run is the standout: consistent 4.9-5.9ft groundswell, clean conditions, and that long period giving proper waves at this reef. The swell direction (SSW) matches the optimum SW nicely.
Monday July 6th eases to 4.3-4.6ft, still SSW, with a 17-second period in the morning—very long period groundswell. Wind picks up to a moderate breeze (12 mph) from the ESE, still cross-off and clean. Energy is strong (1293). On a reef, that long period is gold, but sets will be spaced out.
Tuesday July 7th holds 4.6ft, 16-second period, gentle cross-off. Energy dips to 909 (moderate) in the morning, but the afternoon looks decent. Wednesday July 8th bumps to 5.6-5.9ft from the SW, 16-second period. Afternoon energy rockets to 2218 (strong to very strong)—a powerful, clean day for experienced surfers.
Thursday July 9th has 6.2-6.6ft SSW swell, 15-second period, clean with gentle to moderate cross-off winds. Energy stays high (1882-1710). This is expert territory when it’s over 5.9ft.
From Friday July 10th through Sunday July 12th, the swell eases to 2.6-4.9ft. The big news is Sunday July 12th morning: offshore wind from the ESE at 9 mph—glassy, clean, offshore conditions. Swell is 3.6ft from the SW, 14-second period. Energy is moderate (541). That’s some of the clearest surf in the run, even if smaller.
Monday July 13th drops to 2.0-3.0ft, but the period stretches to 20 seconds—very long period groundswell from the SSW. That’s a sleepy, long-lining swell best for the reef. Energy is light (430-878).
Then Tuesday July 14th fires back: 5.9-6.2ft from the SSW, 18-second period, energy hitting 2474 (strong to very strong). This is a serious pulse. Winds are gentle cross-off from the ESE, clean. Another standout, but for experts only.
From Wednesday July 15th through Saturday July 18th, the swell backs off from 4.9ft down to 3.3ft, periods between 16-18 seconds. Winds stay cross-off, mostly light to gentle. A bit of rain on the 15th and 17th, but the surf stays clean and workable.
The only gap is right at the start, but first surf appears on July 3rd. No real blank run—it’s surfable almost every day through the 16-day outlook. The standouts are the first weekend (July 3-5) for that sweet mix of size, long period, and light wind, and Tuesday July 14th for the big, clean pulse. Intermediates, aim for the 3rd to the 5th. Experts, hit the 14th.
Keep the wax warm.
