The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for the next couple of weeks.
The first bit of surf we’re looking at is this Friday morning at Lakey Pipe (West Nusa Tenggara). Water temp is about 81°, which is pretty normal for the time of year. The swell’s coming from the southwest at 4ft with a 14-second period – that’s a proper groundswell, bringing some real energy. The combined energy’s sitting at 1172, which is moderate, and the wind is a gentle ESE cross-off, so it’ll be clean. It’s a consistent reef break, so you can count on it, but it’s an intermediate wave, so not for the beginners. You’ll have company, though – crowds are often there.
The Friday afternoon session drops a little with a 5ft swell and a 16-second period, and the wind stays cross-off, but the tide looks a bit tricky. Saturday the 18th is similar – morning’s a bit lumpy with 12 mph wind, but the afternoon cleans up nicely with a 5ft SW swell and light cross-off breeze. The energy’s dropping through the weekend, but it’s still surfable.
Monday the 20th is where things get interesting. The morning’s okay, but the Monday afternoon is a standout. You’ve got a 7ft SW swell at 17 seconds, with a light SSE breeze at just 6 mph. That’s glassy, clean. The combined energy jumps to 2522 – that’s strong wave energy. This is an excellent session for experienced surfers, as that size is getting into the big stuff. It’s a reef, so the long period will wrap in nicely.
After that, the swell settles from Tuesday through the end of the week, with a lot of marginal days and moderate wind. The waves drop to around 3ft or less, and the energy tapers off. It’s a bit of a lull.
Then we get a pulse again on the 29th of July. Wednesday morning sees a 5ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, clean cross-off wind, and combined energy of 1084. That’s a solid session for experienced surfers. The 30th of July is also worth a mention – the Thursday afternoon has a 3ft SW swell, but the period is a massive 23 seconds, and the wind is a light 6 mph SSE. That’s glassy. The energy is 1414, which is moderate, but with that period, the waves will be long and lined up.
The real standout, though, is the end of the month and into August. On Friday the 31st of July, the swell jumps to 8ft from the SW at 18 seconds, with combined energy hitting 4029 – that’s very strong. The wind is a gentle SSE cross-off. This is big, powerful, and clean. It’s only for experts at that size. And then Saturday the 1st of August keeps it going with 7ft SW swell, 17-second period, and a light SSE breeze at 6 mph. That’s another excellent session for the crew who can handle it. The crowds will be there, but the waves will be worth it.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is Monday afternoon the 20th of July for a solid, clean swell, and then the big pulse at the end of July and into August – Friday the 31st and Saturday the 1st are the true standouts if you’re after some serious waves. The rest of the week in between is a bit quiet, so pick your windows.
Stay stoked.
Rusty.
