The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Downtowns over the next couple of weeks. This reef setup is advanced and fairly consistent, with an optimum SW direction – and we’ve got a run of solid groundswells lined up. The window opens right now (Sunday July 19) with clean, rideable waves, but the real magic starts tomorrow.
Sunday July 19 – Morning sees a nice 4.3ft SW swell, period 14s, and light cross-off wind. Combined energy is moderate (976). It’s clean, but not huge. Afternoon the wind turns offshore, swell holds, energy dips a bit (889) – still a fun session for those who know the reef.
Monday July 20 – This is where it gets exciting. Morning delivers 6.2ft SW at 17s – that’s a long-period groundswell with strong energy (2352). The wind is gentle and cross-off, so faces will be clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon stays similar but with a touch more wind and a shift to SSW – still good, but the morning is the pick.
Tuesday July 21 through Thursday July 24 – Swell backs off a bit, dropping from 5.6ft to 3.3ft. Periods still decent (14-13s), but energy wanes – moderate three-digit numbers. Winds stay cross-off, but the quality fades. These days are more for the keen local who doesn’t mind smaller waves.
Friday July 25 – A little rebound. Morning 3.9ft SSW at 15s, light breeze, energy 752. Afternoon glassy offshore with ESE wind – clean and fun. Not a standout but a nice run.
Saturday July 26 – Morning has a 6.6ft SE swell, but only 8s period – short period windswell. Energy is moderate (1020). The magic here is glassy conditions – light S wind, no ripple. That’s rare. However, the short period means the reef might section. Worth a look if you’re after a glassy window. Afternoon smaller.
Sunday July 27 – Glassy again with small 3.0ft SW at 13s. Clean but tiny. Good for a longboard or a grovel.
Monday July 28 – Morning goes cross-shore, small. Afternoon picks up a bit with 3.0ft SSW at 16s, cross-off, energy 722 – clean and smooth.
Tuesday July 29 – Swell comes back up. Morning 4.3ft SSW at 15s, light breeze, energy 807. Afternoon similar with 4.3ft at 14s, energy 1053. Solid, clean, and consistent – a good day.
