The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break down the same window in feet and knots.
The surf starts slow, but the first real window opens Sunday, July 19th. Morning sees a 4ft SW swell with a light cross breeze, but the afternoon is where it’s at. The wind goes offshore from the east at 6 knots, glassy. Not big, but clean.
Monday, July 20th morning is the standout. You’re looking at a 6ft SW groundswell with a long 17-second period, and a clean cross-offshore wind from the southeast at 9 knots. The combined wave energy is reading 2349 – that’s a lot of power. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and at 6ft, it’s a bit much for beginners. The swell direction is right on the money from the SW. Mark it.
Tuesday, July 21st morning still has a 6ft SSW swell, but the wind bumps up. By Wednesday, it drops off into a flat spell until the next weekend.
The next good window starts Saturday, July 26th. Early morning is glassy with a 6ft SE swell, but the period is only 8 seconds – a short-period wind swell. It’ll be a bit lumpy, but glassy winds make it work. The quality really comes back Sunday, July 27th afternoon with a 5ft SE swell and glassy conditions.
From July 29th onward, we’re in a solid run. Wednesday and Thursday, July 29th and 30th, have 5ft to 6ft SSW groundswells with 15-second periods, glassy or light offshore winds, and excellent conditions. The real gem is Thursday, July 31st morning: dead calm wind at 0 knots, glassy as a pond, with a 5ft SW groundswell at 18 seconds. The combined energy is 1419 – prime.
The absolute peak is way out on Monday, August 3rd. The morning brings a massive 12ft SSW groundswell with an 18-second period and light offshore wind. But with 6882 combined energy and surf over 8ft, this is experts only. The afternoon drops to 10ft. It’s a monster, but only for the brave.
Water temp is 81°F, about average for the season.
Crowds at Downtowns can show up sometimes, so get in early on the good days.
Rusty, signing off.
