The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
First up, we’ve got a solid run of surf on the horizon at Downtowns (Guam). The water’s sitting right around 80°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year. Not too shabby.
We kick things off on Tuesday morning with some clean, glassy conditions. There’s a 4ft SSW groundswell rolling in with a long 16-second period. The energy is moderate at 1961, and with zero wind, it’s going to be super clean out there. This is a great way to start, even if it’s not the biggest.
The swell builds through the day, and by Wednesday we’re looking at the real deal. Wednesday morning sees 8ft of SW swell, still glassy, and that period stretches out to 18 seconds – that’s some serious groundswell energy (3609). It’s pushing 8ft by the afternoon, and with slight offshore ESE wind, it’s looking proper. This is a standout window for sure. It’s big, it’s clean, and the energy is strong (4079). This is the pick of the first week.
Thursday stays strong at around 8ft, but the morning gets a bit of a cross-shore breeze, making it a little lumpy. The afternoon cleans up nicely with a cross-offshore E wind, so it’s back to being good.
Friday sees a bit of a dip in size but still solid, with the afternoon offering clean, offshore conditions. Saturday and Sunday keep the good times rolling with clean, glassy mornings and strong, consistent swell.
Now, for that second week, it keeps pumping but gets a little more inconsistent. The mornings tend to have more cross-shore wind, but the afternoons clean up. By the 31st, we see another uptick in size and energy, with a 7ft SW swell and a clean, offshore afternoon. That’s a good one.
Then we hit the big finale. On the 1st of September, the swell jumps to a solid 10ft. The morning is a bit lumpy with cross-shore wind, but Tuesday afternoon cleans right up with light offshore ESE wind. The energy is huge (4552) – this is for experienced surfers only. The 2nd of September keeps that 10ft swell going with clean conditions. This is another standout, probably the biggest and most powerful surf of the whole period, but you’ve got to know what you’re doing. It’s over 8ft, so it’s expert territory for sure.
One thing to note – that long period swell over 15 seconds is going to be a bit tricky at a beach break, but at a reef like Downtowns, it should hold up nicely.
Alright, here’s the long and short of it. For the best waves, you want to be out there on the 19th and 20th, or hold out for the big one on the 1st and 2nd of September. The conditions are going to be clean, the swell is going to be solid, and it’s going to be a fun couple of weeks.
Rusty, out.
