The Lowdown
Alright, let me break down what Scar Reef is serving up. This is a reef and point break that lights up when the swell comes from the southwest. The water’s sitting at 81°F, which is pretty average for this time of year – nothing abnormal.
The run starts on Thursday the 16th with clean conditions. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the SSW, a long 15-second period, and a light offshore breeze from the SE. That’s proper groundswell, and the combined energy is strong at 1296 (moderate to strong). Expect very good, clean surf, with the wind dropping even lighter by the afternoon. The crowd is “sometimes,” so don’t sleep on it.
Friday the 17th keeps the quality up. Similar size, 5ft from the SW, still 15 seconds, and morning offshore winds. Afternoon swings to a cross-off from the ESE, but wave energy is even higher at 1555, so the shape holds.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th stay solid: 4-5ft, SW swell, 13-15 seconds, with offshore or light cross-off winds. Consistently clean and good. Energy stays moderate, around 700-1200.
Now, Monday the 20th is a standout. Swell jumps to 7ft from the SSW, period hits 17 seconds, and the combined energy rockets to 2447 – strong wave energy. Morning is glassy with a light SSE breeze, and it’s marked “excellent for experienced surfers.” This is advanced territory. Over 5ft on a reef, beginners stay out. The afternoon stays offshore but with a moderate breeze. If you’re skilled, this is the best of the first week.
Tuesday the 21st stays good with 6ft from the SW, period drops to 14 seconds. Energy is still moderate-strong at 1402. Offshore winds hold all day.
From Wednesday the 22nd through the end of the first week, the swell settles to 4-5ft. Winds stay offshore or cross-off, and it’s clean. Not epic, but solid.
Saturday the 25th deserves a note: morning is glassy with 4ft from the SSW and a 15-second period. Energy is moderate at 777, but glassy conditions on a point break are always sweet.
Into the second week, Monday the 27th sees a lull – smaller swell around 3-3ft, but still clean and rideable.
Tuesday the 28th looks good again. Swell builds to 5ft from the SSW, period back up to 17 seconds, and the morning is glassy. Energy is strong at 1621. Another one for experienced surfers.
Friday the 31st is the long-range standout. Morning has a glassy 3ft swell from the SW, but the period is a massive 23 seconds, and the combined energy is 2148 (very strong). That’s an extremely long-period groundswell, which on this reef and point setup will produce beautifully powerful, lined-up waves. The afternoon stays clean with 4ft and a 22-second period. It’s marked “excellent for experienced surfers.” Over a week out, so it’s a promising look, not a guarantee.
The two true standouts here are Monday the 20th and Friday the 31st, with Saturday the 25th and Tuesday the 28th as strong back-ups. If you’re confident in your abilities, circle the 20th. The long-range 31st is one to keep an eye on.
