Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on Scarborough’s Scar Reef. This reef and point is the only spot that's showing, so let's get into it.
The big picture is a solid run of clean, southwest groundswell, with a consistent southeast offshore wind keeping things tidy. This isn't a flash in the pan; it's a proper sequence of days. Wave energy starts moderate and builds into strong territory. Water temp is about normal for the season.
We kick off on Tuesday the 7th with 5ft of SSW swell pushing in at 16 seconds, cleaned up by a 20 km/h SE wind. That’s real energy with moderate power (933). By Wednesday the 8th, it gets serious. Morning brings 6ft from the SW at 15 seconds with a light offshore breeze – clean and solid. At 6ft, this is pushing into expert realm. The energy climbs strong (1811). Wednesday afternoon hits 7ft from the SSW at 15 seconds with a moderate offshore. That's big, powerful stuff, and only for the experienced. Energy is very strong (2016). This is a top window for the crew who can handle it.
Thursday the 9th keeps the quality, with 7ft of SSW swell in the morning, backing to 6ft in the afternoon, both clean. Energy stays strong (1941 and 1601). Friday the 10th is a gem. A gentle offshore with 6ft to 6ft of SW groundswell at 16 seconds. Energy is strong (1756 and 1846). Another standout window.
Saturday the 11th eases to 5ft to 5ft, but the wind drops to a light breeze and conditions stay clean. Sunday the 12th goes glassy in the morning with only 3ft of swell – a real lull. Energy drops to moderate (476). Monday the 13th is tiny, with a 2ft afternoon reading but a freakishly long 21-second period. That kind of period can make a reef wave do funky things.
Then a second pulse hits Tuesday the 14th afternoon as the real standout: 6ft from the SSW with an 18-second period, clean with a moderate offshore. That is groundswell perfection, with very strong energy (2188). Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th keep the good stuff going with 6ft to 5ft of clean surf. Friday the 17th goes glassy in the afternoon with 5ft. The following week brings another bump, with Sunday the 19th showing 6ft from the SSW and a gentle offshore. Energy is strong (1806). The run stays solid through to the 22nd.
Heads up: this is an advanced break, and crowds can happen. The swell direction is mostly SSW to SW, which is right in the optimum zone for this spot. The very long periods (15+ seconds) mean the wave can get a bit too lined up for the reef, but it usually handles it well.
To sum it up for the experienced surfer: Wednesday the 8th afternoon for the biggest, most powerful surf, and Tuesday the 14th afternoon for that perfect combo of size, period, and clean conditions. Sunday the 12th and Monday the 13th are small and quiet. Beginners will find anything over about 5ft too much, especially on this reef.
That’s the look from here.
