The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty here. We've got a solid run of surf ahead at Super Suck, a reef and point break that knows how to handle a proper swell. The water temp is sitting at 81°F, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The opening act kicks off on Wednesday morning, July 15th, with a cracking 7ft SSW groundswell and a long 16-second period. The wind is light and offshore from the SE, so the conditions are clean and the energy is pumping hard (2254). This is proper advanced territory, so leave the foamies at home. The afternoon holds at 6ft with the same clean offshore flow, keeping the quality high.
Thursday the 16th backs it up nicely. The morning has a 5ft SSW swell with a cross-off wind, still clean and manageable. The afternoon cleans up with a drop to 5ft SW and offshore breeze, making for a very good session. Friday the 17th sticks with similar 4ft to 4ft SW swell, the wind stays offshore, and the waves are consistent.
Saturday the 18th is a real treat. Both sessions have 5ft SW swell with offshore winds, keeping the surf clean and lined up. The energy is still moderate (1221 in the morning). Sunday the 19th sees a slight drop to 4ft, but the afternoon brings a rain shower and clean offshore wind, which can put a bit of texture on the surface but keeps the waves fun.
Monday the 20th is a standout. The morning jumps back to 6ft SW swell with a 17-second period, and the energy is strong (2280). That's a powerful, walled-up wave for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds at 7ft, same direction, and the wind is solid offshore. This is the pick of the first week, no question.
Tuesday the 21st drops back to 6ft SSW, still clean with offshore winds, but the energy is lower. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd see the swell fade to 4ft to 5ft, but the wind stays offshore, keeping the waves rideable. The water is still warm and the vibe is mellow.
Friday the 24th has a morning of 4ft SW, and the afternoon drops to 3ft but with a very long 17-second period, meaning a super clean, lined-up wave. The energy is moderate (1189). Saturday the 25th builds again to 5ft SSW, with strong offshore winds and solid energy (1818) – another excellent day for the experienced crew.
Sunday the 26th is a bit smaller at 4ft, but the wind is still offshore, and the waves are clean. The final week sees a shift on Monday the 27th with a 6ft SE swell but a short 8-second period, which is weaker and less organised. The morning has a light cross-off wind, but it’s not the same quality. Tuesday the 28th brings a 4ft SW swell with a super long 19-second period, clean and glassy, but a cross-shore wind is a bit of a pain.
The last few days, from Wednesday the 29th to the 30th, settle into a consistent 3ft to 4ft SW groundswell with light winds and clean conditions. It’s not huge, but it’s perfect for a longboard or a fun mid-length.
Overall, the biggest standout is Monday the 20th, with that 6ft to 7ft SW swell and strong offshore winds. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" at Super Suck, so you might get a few others out, but it’s worth the paddle. The second week looks promising but a bit more unsettled, with the real gold being the long-period swells.
Stay safe, and don't be a hero if it's over your head.
Rusty.
