The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Super Suck. This is a solid run, no doubt about it. We’ve got a consistent stretch of quality swell and clean wind that’s going to line up beautifully for the experienced crew.
The water's sitting right on the money at 80°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The action kicks off Monday afternoon, August 17th, with a clean 5 ft SSW swell and a gentle offshore wind. It’s a nice warm-up, but the real magic starts to build. Tuesday morning, August 18th, we see a longer-period 4 ft SSW groundswell moving in, with a cross-off wind that’s got the face looking smooth. The energy is already ramping up, with combined swell energy sitting at 1955 (moderate). By Tuesday afternoon, we’ve got a 5 ft SW swell with the wind turning straight offshore, and the energy jumps to 2435 – that’s a serious step up.
Wednesday, August 19th, is where I’d be circling the date. Wednesday morning starts glassy with a 8 ft SW swell, period up to 18 seconds, and the combined energy hits 3609. That’s deep, powerful groundswell. Wednesday afternoon tops it with an 8 ft SW swell, glassy offshore wind, and energy at 4079. This is solid, heavy, expert-level surf. The swell direction is a perfect match for the optimum SW, and the consistency is reliable. Crowds are only a *sometimes* thing here, so you might get a bit of company, but it won’t be a circus. This is the standout window.
Thursday, August 20th holds the size at 8 ft SW, with morning cross-off and afternoon offshore winds keeping it clean. The energy is still well into the 3000s. Friday, August 21st, the swell drops a touch to 6 ft in the morning but picks back up to 8 ft by afternoon, with a moderate offshore breeze. The whole weekend from Saturday, August 22nd, through Sunday, August 23rd, keeps the SW swell running at 6 ft to 7 ft, with clean conditions and cross-off or offshore winds. Energy stays in the 1700 to 2500 range – solid.
We hit a bit of a lull from Monday, August 24th, through to Wednesday, August 26th. The swell drops to 5 ft to 6 ft, and while the wind is still workable, the surf quality is described as marginal. The energy drops to below 1000, which is weak. There’s a brief bright spot on Wednesday afternoon, August 26th, with a 5 ft SW swell and a gentle offshore, but it’s nothing compared to the earlier week.
The action starts to build again from Thursday, August 27th onwards. The swell picks back up to 5 ft to 6 ft, and by Thursday afternoon, the energy is back over 2000 with a moderate offshore wind. Friday, August 28th, and Saturday, August 29th, are clean and consistent, with 6 ft to 6 ft SW swell. Then Sunday, August 30th, we get a nice 7 ft SW swell with light winds – a solid finish to the weekend.
Now, looking further out, Monday, August 31st, sees a very long-period 5 ft SW swell (21 seconds!) with moderate offshore wind, and the energy jumps to 3567. This is a groundswell that will wrap nicely around the point. Then Tuesday, September 1st, we get an 8 ft SW swell with energy over 4300, but the wind is cross-off and the surf quality is flagged as marginal. Things are less certain that far out, but the potential is there for another big push.
For the long-range standout, I’m keeping an eye on Monday, August 31st, afternoon. That 7 ft SW swell, 20-second period, with a moderate offshore and energy at 4153, is promising. It’s a long way out, but the ingredients are there for another epic session at Super Suck.
Rusty, signing off.
