Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Medewi’s got cookin’ for us over the next couple weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got some solid swell rolling in, but the onshore winds are really puttin’ a damper on things. The water is sittin’ at 82°, which is basically normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The weekend kicks off with a bit of size. Saturday morning, July 4th, we’re lookin’ at a clean 5 ft SSW swell with a very long 16-second period, packin’ some serious energy. But that cross-on wind from the SSE is messin’ with the surface, making for a choppy, bumpy ride. It’s a real shame because that swell has the makings of something special. Saturday afternoon holds similar energy but the wind goes cross-shore, cleanin’ it up a touch.
Sunday morning, July 5th, the swell drops just a hair to 5 ft, still a long 14-second period, but the wind lightens right up from the south at only 3 mph. It’s still light cross-onshore, but that’s about as close to glass as we’re gonna get. This might be the pick of the weekend for anyone who can put up with a few ripples.
Then we hit a rough patch. From Monday, July 6th, right through to Saturday, July 18th, the wind just cranks up from the southeast, blowin’ 9–16 mph, mostly cross-onshore or cross, keepin’ the surface nasty. There’s still some decent swell in there—like Wednesday afternoon, July 8th, with a 5 ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and a massive energy reading—but that moderate cross-onshore wind makes it a total write-off for a clean surf. It’s more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle-surfing session.
We get a tiny glimmer of hope on Tuesday morning, July 14th, when the wind drops back to a light 6 mph from the SSE, with a 3 ft SSW swell. It’s cross-on, so not perfect, but it’s the best the second week has to offer. Then again on Wednesday morning, July 15th, a bigger 5 ft swell rolls in with a 16-second period, but that wind is back up to 12 mph cross-onshore, killin’ it.
The absolute wildcard comes on Thursday afternoon, July 16th, and Friday morning, July 17th. We get a short-period 8-second SE windswell, 5 ft to 6 ft. The period is short, so it’ll be crumbly and weak, but the direction is different. Don’t get your hopes up—the wind is still messy.
Honestly, if you’re lookin’ for the best on offer, it’s early. Sunday morning, July 5th, with the light wind and that quality long-period groundswell. But even then, it’s only a so-so kind of day. The rest of the run is a long stretch of poor-to-marginal conditions. There are a few days with no surf in the true sense of the word.
Keep an eye on the forecasts though; it tends not to stay this rough forever.
Rusty, signing off.
