The Lowdown
Right, pull up a stool. Rusty here. It’s a bit of a tale of two weeks for us at Medewi. The good stuff is way out there on the horizon, but we’ve got a fair bit of junk to wade through first.
Alright, so here's the deal. That classic Medewi left-hander, a real beginner-friendly point break that’s fairly consistent, is set to be a bit of a dud for the next week and a half. We’ve got a solid SSW groundswell trying to push through, but the problem is the wind. It’s locked in from the southeast, blowing cross to cross-onshore, which is just chopping everything up. The water temp is sitting around 82°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no dramas there.
The first sniff of anything decent doesn't come until the 20th, Monday morning. We’ll see a 4ft SSW swell with a 14-second period. The combined energy is moderate (1112), but the cross-shore wind is still creating a cross-chop, making it a marginal call at best. It just won’t be clean.
Honestly, the whole first week is a write-off. The swell sticks around, but every session is marred by poor conditions. It’s not until we get deep into the second week that things start to look interesting. There’s a real standout shaping up for the 31st of July, Friday afternoon. We’re looking at a clean 4ft SSW groundswell with a good 17-second period and, get this, glassy conditions. That’s the word we’ve been waiting for. The combined energy is strong (922), and with that long period, it’s going to set up beautifully for Medewi's point. However, this is a long-range call, so treat it as promising but not a lock.
The day after, the 1st of August, Saturday morning, also has potential with a 4ft SSW swell and light offshore wind, but the tide and wind might be a little trickier. The absolute standout of the whole window though, is that glassy Friday afternoon session on the 31st. It’s the one to aim for.
Forget the rest of the pack until then. It’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
