Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what we’ve got coming down the line for Medewi. The water is a warm 82°F right now, and with the anomaly being barely a degree off, it’s pretty standard for the season.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week or so looks pretty grim for a proper paddle. We’ve got some solid groundswell energy coming through, that long period stuff from the SSW, but the wind is the real buzzkill here. It’s almost constantly a moderate cross-onshore breeze, which is just chopping everything up.
The first few days, Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th, you’re looking at 3ft to 5ft of swell, with some serious energy behind it – the combined energy is hitting over 1000 (1269 on Wednesday arvo). But with that 12 mph cross-on wind, it’s just messy. The report calls it poor surf conditions, and I’d agree. Not worth your time.
Thursday morning the 9th is a bit of a tease. The swell drops slightly to 5ft, but the wind goes cross-shore, which kills a bit of the chop. Still, it’s only a “marginal” call with a score that doesn’t inspire confidence. The energy is strong there at 1555, but the conditions just aren’t cooperating.
Friday and the weekend look similar – more wind, more chop. There is a brief moment on Sunday morning the 12th where the wind drops to just 3 mph, but the swell has backed right off to 2ft. That’s barely a ripple. Combined energy is a weak 228. That’s a skunk.
We’ve got a real dry spell here until we start seeing something half-decent.
The one that catches my eye is Saturday the 18th. That’s the standout in this whole outlook. We’ve got a 6ft SSW groundswell with a period of 16 to 17 seconds – that’s some proper long-period energy, the kind that makes Medewi’s point work. The combined energy is pumping at 1785 on the morning, and the wind is only a gentle 9 mph cross-onshore. That’s not perfect, but it’s better than the 15 mph garbage we’ve been dealing with. The score is the highest we see in this whole run. It’s still only a “marginal” rating, but it’s the best shot we’ve got. This is one for the intermediate crew; 6ft with that period will have some push, but it’s not too big to handle. Keep in mind, that long period at a beach break can make things fat, but at Medewi’s point, it should set up nicely for some longer rides. Crowds are *sometimes* an issue at Medewi, so on a Saturday with the best swell in a fortnight, expect company.
Sunday the 19th morning is a backup option – 5ft with a light 6 mph cross-on breeze. It’s cleaner, but the energy is lower (1205) and the score isn’t as good.
After that, it fades back into mediocrity with onshore winds and smaller swell. The 22nd has a weird 1ft, 20-second period blip, but with onshore wind, it’s just a long wait for nothing.
So, if you’re sitting on your hands, wait for Saturday the 18th. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best we’re going to see for a while.
Rusty.
