The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let's have a proper look at what the ocean's got cookin' for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the surf is here, but it's a bit of a mixed bag for the first week. The opening days are running on a solid, workable swell, but we're dealing with some cross-shore breeze messing with the surface. It's not junk, but it's not gonna have you sprinting down the beach either.
We kick things off on Sunday morning, the 23rd. There's a decent 5.9ft SSW swell rolling in with a 15-second period, and the energy is moderate at 2033. The wind is cross-off, keeping the surface clean, which is a bit of a silver lining. Canggu (Bali) is the spot, and the water temp is a touch under average at 78.9°F, so pretty normal for this time of year. The wind is a moderate 12 mph, so it's a bit bumpy but manageable. The afternoon sees the wind shift more cross-shore, so expect a little more chop.
Monday the 24th looks similar. The swell bumps up slightly to 6.2ft, still from the SSW, and the period stretches to 16 seconds. Morning conditions are okay with that cross-off breeze, but it gets messier in the arvo. Same story Tuesday the 25th, just slightly smaller at 5.6ft. The winds pick up a touch more, making the mornings the only real option.
Wednesday the 26th is where we start to feel it fade. The swell drops to 5.2ft, and the period shortens to 14 seconds, losing some of that punch. The wind is fully cross-shore, and the energy is weakening into the 901-1016 range, so it's looking pretty average.
Now, hold on to your boards, because Thursday the 27th brings in a long-period groundswell. The period jumps to 20 seconds in the afternoon! It's a little smaller at 4.3ft, but that long-period energy is something special, pushing the energy numbers up to 2661. The wind is a light, gentle cross-onshore, so it's not perfect, but the potential for some clean, lined-up waves is there. This could be a sneaky highlight for the more patient surfer. It's a bit small for the average punter, but those long-period swells can really wrap and groove on a reef like Canggu.
But the real event is Friday the 28th. That's the standout. The swell kicks up to a solid 9.8ft in the morning, with a 16-second period. The energy jumps to a strong 4022. This is proper, solid surf. The wind is a light cross-shore, which is a major positive. This is big, powerful stuff and it will be pushing the limits. This is expert territory only – too big for beginners, and even experienced surfers need to be on their game. It will be heavy and mean. The afternoon drops to 8.2ft, still solid, but the wind picks up a little, creating some chop. This is the day to be out there if you have the skills and the courage.
After that excitement, the surf settles down for the weekend. Saturday the 29th drops to 6.2ft, and by Sunday the 30th it's back to the 4.3-4.6ft range with shorter periods. The energy drops off, and the cross-shore winds are back. It’s definitely a step down from Friday's epic.
The start of the following week on Monday the 31st sees another pulse of long-period energy coming through. The swell is a modest 4.3ft in the morning, but the period is a long 19 seconds. The energy is moderate at 1472. The winds are light, keeping things clean. The afternoon builds to 5.6ft with an 18-second period. It’s another one of those sneaky-good days where the size isn't huge, but the quality from that long period is high.
Tuesday the 1st of September looks pretty good too. The swell picks up to 6.2ft in the morning, with a 16-second period and a cross-off wind. That spells clean conditions. The energy is up there at 2270. The afternoon holds at 6.6ft with a 17-second period, but the wind goes a bit cross-shore.
The middle of the first week of September sees a slow, steady decline. The swell hangs in the 4.9ft-6.2ft range with periods around 16 seconds, but the energy slowly fades. The winds are light and cross-shore. It’s not bad, just not as good.
Then we have a few days of smaller, weaker surf from the 3rd and 4th. The swell drops to 3.9ft, and the energy weakens to under 1012. It's pretty marginal.
But just when you
