The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at your local surf outlook for the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ve got some bright spots on the horizon. The first real chance for a paddle starts on Friday, July 17, so we’ve got a dry spell until then.
Alright, let’s get into it. The first call is Canggu on Friday afternoon, July 17. We’re looking at a 4 ft swell from the SW, with a really long period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wave energy is strong (1106). The wind is a cross-offshore breeze at 12 mph, which will keep the surface clean. The water’s sitting at 81°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. This is a reef break that’s consistent, so there’s hope. The waves will be a bit tricky for beginners though, as that long period can make things a bit shifty at this spot. Crowds are possible, so keep your eyes peeled.
Saturday morning, July 18, sees a bit of a drop in quality. The swell bumps up to 5 ft from the SW, but the period drops to 15 seconds, and the wind is a cross-offshore breeze at 15 mph. The energy is still strong (948), but the outlook is marginal. The rain showers are a bit of a downer too. The same goes for Sunday and Monday, with the swell sticking around 4 ft to 5 ft, but the wind turns more cross-shore, creating a bit of chop. The energy peaks on Monday afternoon with a 7 ft swell from the SSW, but it’s a cross-shore wind that’s making things messy. That’s not going to be a fun paddle.
Now, there’s a real standout coming up. Tuesday, July 28, is looking like the pick of the bunch. The morning session has a 5 ft swell from the SSW with a long 18-second period, and the wind is light and cross-shore at 9 mph, keeping it clean. The energy is very strong (1625). The afternoon is even better, with the swell hitting 6 ft from the SSW, same long period, and the wind turning cross-offshore at 9 mph – that’s glassy, clean conditions. The energy is pumping (1992). This is a solid groundswell that will be a joy on this reef break. It’s still a bit big for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it’s going to be a gem.
Wednesday, July 29, is another cracker. The morning has a 7 ft swell from the SSW, with a 16-second period, and the wind is a whisper at 3 mph, creating a glassy surface. The energy is very strong (2085). This is expert territory, though, as it’s over 8 ft. The afternoon stays clean with a 6 ft swell. The rest of the week into early August has some good pulses, with the 1st of August showing a 6 ft swell from the SW with a clean cross-offshore breeze, but that’s far out, so treat it as promising but not locked in.
Overall, the best on offer is the 28th, with the 29th as a close second for the big-wave hunters. The forecast is a bit marginal for the first week, but we’ve got some real energy arriving later. Hang in there.
Rusty.
