Legian Beach Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Legian Beach. The next couple of weeks are a mixed bag. This exposed beach break is going to see a lot of action, but it’s not all going to be pretty.

Right now, through Sunday the 26th of July, we’ve got a solid 8ft swell from the southeast, but that ESE wind is blowing cross-offshore at 12 mph. The water is a warm 80°F, which is about average for this time of year. The swell energy is strong at 1742, but the wave comment is honestly marginal. It’s big enough for advanced surfers, but for the average punter, the conditions are a bit of a wrestle. The energy eases slightly through Monday, but the wind picks up to a fresh 22 mph, making it messy.

A real shift happens on Tuesday the 28th. The swell drops right down to 3ft, but the period jumps to 16 seconds. That’s a clean, long-period groundswell from the SSW. The energy is still moderate (714), but the wind is a steady cross-off. For a beach break like Legian, super long-period swells can sometimes run a bit too straight, but the clean conditions are a big plus. It’s a better window for a more relaxed paddle.

The real standout, the one I’m circling on the calendar, is Saturday the 1st of August. The afternoon sees a 6ft SSW swell with a very long 18-second period. The energy is pumping at 1870, and the wind is a gentle 9 mph breeze from the southeast. The report calls it “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is the best on offer. The swell direction is a perfect match for the optimum SW direction, and with light winds, it’s going to be super clean. Crowds are ‘often’ here, so expect company.

After that, the swell stays chunky, holding around 6ft to 7ft through the first week of August, with that consistent SSW groundswell. The wind is mostly cross-off, keeping it rideable. There’s another flashpoint on Friday the 7th of August, with the afternoon session looking excellent again for experienced surfers, with a 6ft swell and light 9 mph winds. The energy is moderate but clean.

Into the second week, the 8th and 9th of August, the swell pumps up to 8ft on Saturday, with very strong energy (2716). That’s getting into expert-only territory. The wind is light, so it’ll be big and powerful, but not for the faint of heart. The run continues through to the 10th, where the swell is dropping back to 5ft, but the period is still a solid 14 seconds.

So, to sum it up: the first few days are a bit of a grind with onshore wind, but once we hit Tuesday the 28th, the quality improves. The absolute pick of the litter is Saturday the 1st of August, with the afternoon session offering the best combo of size, long period, light wind, and clean conditions. That’s your golden window. The following weekend is for the big-wave chargers only.
