Alright, let’s get into it. This is Balangan, and the next couple of weeks are looking like a solid run of that famous, reliable SW groundswell. The water temp is gonna feel pretty average for this time of year, nothing weird going on there. We’ve got consistent, clean conditions with a strong offshore flow holding things together for most of the period.
The real standout starts on Monday, July 8th, in the afternoon. The swell pushes up to a clean 7ft from the SSW, with a period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. It’s a reef break, so that long period will wrap in nicely and the combined energy is a solid (2127). It’ll be a bit much for beginners, but for experienced surfers this is the pick of the whole window. Winds are a moderate offshore breeze from the SE, keeping the faces smooth.
The other absolute highlight comes a bit later, on the morning of Saturday, July 18th. This is a bit further out, so keep an eye on it, but it could be magic. We’re looking at a 5ft SSW groundswell with a very long 17-second period. The combined energy is big at (1875) and the wind is light offshore from the ESE, glassy clean. The longer period means more energy and better shape at Balangan’s reef, with longer waits between sets. This is a session for the dawn patrol.
Before that, the week kicks off on Monday morning, July 6th, with 4ft SSW swell and 17-second period. Wind is a moderate offshore from the ESE, so it’s clean but the energy is just moderate at (1325). The morning is better than the afternoon for cleanliness. Tuesday the 7th morning has a fresh offshore breeze with 5ft SSW swell, still clean. Wednesday the 8th morning bumps up to a bigger, more powerful 7ft SSW swell, but that fresh wind might have a bit of texture. The afternoon of Wednesday is the real highlight I already mentioned.
Thursday the 9th has a bit of rain around in the morning but the 7ft SSW swell is still pumping with fresh offshore wind. The wind strengthens a little on Friday the 10th, but the afternoon has a nice 6ft from the SW, clean with a moderate breeze. The wave quality is high for more experienced surfers. The weekend of the 12th–13th sees the swell drop a bit. Saturday the 12th has smaller 3ft–3ft SW swell, clean but weaker energy (435). Sunday the 13th is the big return: a Monday the 13th morning has 5ft SSW swell with a massive 20-second period and (1635) energy. That afternoon is even better, 6ft and 19 seconds with (2361) energy. That’s a long-period groundswell that will be very straight at a beach break, but at Balangan’s reef it will be a thing of beauty.
Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th hold solid 6ft–7ft SSW swell, with fresh offshore winds. Conditions are clean but the wind is on the stronger side. The quality drops a bit through Thursday and Friday the 16th–17th, though Friday the 17th sees lighter winds – a light offshore breeze on the morning making things glassy with 4ft SW swell. The period drops to 14 seconds so it’s still fun.
By the second week, the pattern stays active. I’ve already mentioned Saturday the 18th as a standout. Sunday the 19th has a slight shift – the wind goes cross-shore from the SW in the morning, but the afternoon swings to a light cross-offshore from the SSW, cleaning up the 6ft swell. Monday the 20th eases a bit with smaller 5ft swell, but it’s still clean. Tuesday the 21st morning has light offshore wind and 4ft SSW swell – a fun end to the run.
Crowds are possible at Balangan, it’s a known spot, but with this consistent stretch there’s plenty of waves to go around.
