The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let’s look at what’s shaping up for Sunset Left.

Honestly, the next week and a half are a bit of a grind. We’ve got persistent moderate cross-shore and cross-onshore winds messing up the surface, and the swell is choppy and inconsistent. The water’s sitting at 80°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

We start Wednesday morning, July 22, with a 4ft SSW swell, but it’s coming in with a 16 mph SE cross-breeze, so it’s a messy, choppy affair. That pattern sticks around through the rest of July and into the first few days of August. Afternoon sessions on Friday, July 24, and Tuesday, July 28, are barely worth a mention – just marginal surf with questionable tide conditions and lumpy cross-chop.

The real story is the second week. From Saturday, August 1, things start to look more promising. The wind drops right off to a light breeze, and we start seeing some proper groundswell. Sunday morning, August 2, has a 5ft SW swell with a 16-second period and light offshore wind – that’s clean. The wave energy is ramping up strong, hitting 1306 (moderate to strong). By Wednesday afternoon, August 5, we’re looking at a standout: a solid 7ft SW swell, 18-second period, glassy conditions with light cross-onshore breeze, and the combined energy is a massive 3159 (very strong). That’s the pick of the whole forecast. This is a long-period groundswell, so it’ll be breaking a bit straight on the beach, but for a reef setup like Sunset Left, it’s going to unload nicely. This is advanced territory at that size, and it gets even bigger Thursday morning, August 6, with 8ft swell and 3263 energy – that’s expert-only stuff.

So, if you can wait, the first week of August is where it’s at. The first week and a half are a write-off, but hang in there.

Rusty.
