The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – this is a grim stretch for Sainte-Barbe at St Jean de Luz. The whole 16-day window is looking flat, like a pond. We're talking about a run of over two weeks with nothing to get excited about.
The first surf we see is on Thursday afternoon, the 30th of July, and it's a tragic 2 ft of weak NW windswell with a short 8-second period. The combined energy is a pathetic 35, and it's blown out by a NW breeze (6 mph). The water is a balmy 76°, but that's 5° warmer than normal, which is pretty unusual for this time of year.
Honestly, from there it just gets worse. We see a couple of glassy mornings on Friday the 31st and Tuesday the 4th of August, but the swell drops to 1 ft and then 0.7 ft – it's just not enough to push a wave. The wind might be glassy, but there's nothing to ride. The setup is a sheltered reef/jetty, but it's completely exposed to the fact that there's no swell.
The entire forecast is a sea of "poor surf conditions" with scores of zero. The swell energy figures are in the single digits or teens for weeks on end. There's a tiny blip on the 12th of August with 2 ft, but it's still weak and onshore.
Forget the board. This is a perfect time to check the tide pools, go for a swim, or wax the roof racks. It's a blank run, and for this area, that's just how it goes sometimes. The forecasts can change, but right now, there's not a single wave worth paddling for.
Rusty.
