The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the first week and a half is a bit of a write-off at Playa de Gaztetape. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. From the 15th right through to the 23rd of July, you’re looking at waves mostly under 2ft, short period, and just not doing anything. The energy is barely there (18-79). There’s a moment on the morning of the 18th with glassy conditions, but the swell is still only 2ft – more of a paddle than a surf. The stretch from the 15th to the 23rd is a real gap, nothing worth getting out of bed for.
Then things start to change. On the 24th of July, we get a jump in size – morning sees 7ft swell from the WNW, but it’s coming with a cross-onshore breeze and the energy is high (469), but the quality is still no good. That afternoon, it’s a write-off. Not your day.
Now, the real standout is the morning of the 25th of July. That’s Saturday. We’ve got a clean 3ft groundswell from the NW, with a very long period of 12 seconds, and the wind is glassy from the ESE. That’s a magic combo. The energy is strong (364), and the water temp is about average for this time of year. This is the best on offer – clean, long period lines, and no crowds expected. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but that long period might make it a bit tricky if you’re not used to the sets.
The 26th of July, Sunday morning, is also worth a look. Another 4ft NW swell, period of 10 seconds, with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the SE (279 energy). That’s surfable and clean. The afternoon chops up, so get it early.
The 27th of July, Monday morning, is glassy with 4ft NW swell, but the energy is a bit lower (235) and the comment says “ordinary.” It’s surfable, but nothing special.
The next big one is the 28th of July, Tuesday morning. 5ft NW swell, period of 10 seconds, glassy winds from the NE, and the energy is pumping (507). That’s a solid swell, but at 5ft, it’s getting a bit much for beginners. For the experienced crew, this is a beauty. The afternoon gets blown out by onshore wind.
The 29th of July, Wednesday morning, has 5ft NW swell, also glassy from the NNW (363 energy). Another clean morning, but it’s a bit smaller than Tuesday. Good for intermediate to advanced surfers.
After that, it drops off again. The 30th of July is back to small, poor conditions.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a bust. But from the 25th to the 29th of July, the mornings are the go. If I had to pick one, it’s the 25th – glassy, long period, and clean. The 28th is bigger and more powerful, but only for those who know what they’re doing.
Rusty.
