The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week is a bit of a struggle. You've got a long dry spell right off the bat with no real surf to speak of. From right now, through Sunday the 20th of July, it's mostly flat or tiny with poor conditions. The combined energy is weak, just a measly 22 to 19 (the combined energy of all swells directed here). There's a bit of a run from Monday the 21st through to the end of the month, but it's still looking pretty ordinary. The swell hovers around 1 ft to 3 ft with short period junk, mostly 7 seconds or less, and the wind is rarely kind. There's a stretch of days that are just a waste of time looking at the ocean.
The real action doesn't start to build until the very end of the month. Keep your eyes on the horizon for the week leading into August. The swell starts to pick up into the 4 ft to 5 ft range from the NW, with a period around 10 seconds, which is a solid improvement. The combined energy jumps up to 384 (moderate) on Wednesday the 29th of July, and it holds through Thursday the 30th. The wind is still a bit of a problem, mostly cross-on or onshore, but it's close.
Now, the standout is the morning of Sunday the 2nd of August. That's the one to circle on the calendar. Playa de Gaztetape is looking like it's going to fire. The swell is a clean 5 ft from the NW with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is a meaty 392 (moderate). The wind is glassy from the NE at just 3 mph. That's the kind of morning that makes all the waiting worthwhile. The water temp is about average for this time of year. It's a consistent, beginner-friendly break, but it can get a bit of a crowd sometimes, so get in early. The morning of Friday the 31st of July also has a glassy 4 ft NW swell, which is a nice little warm-up option.
The morning of Monday the 3rd of August sees a drop-off in energy and a cross-off wind, so the Sunday is definitely the pick of the bunch. Nothing else in the second week really challenges it.
Keep the faith, the good stuff is coming.
Rusty.
