The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at the coming swell window for us. Let’s break it down.
The first real surf we’ll see is Monday morning, July 20th, at Playa de Gaztetape. It’s not going to blow your mind—just clean, glassy conditions with a small 3ft wave from the north. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s not got much push, and the combined energy is weak (93). It’s surfable, but only just. That north wind is light and glassy, so it’ll be a nice paddle for beginners, and the water temp is about average for this time of year.
Tuesday morning, July 21st, brings a slight bump to 4ft, still from the north, with a 7-second period. The combined energy is moderate (148), and the conditions are glassy again with a light NW wind. It’s still very ordinary, but if you’re desperate, it’s a go.
Then we hit a big dry spell. From Tuesday afternoon, July 21st, all the way through to Tuesday morning, July 28th, the surf is poor. Lots of onshore or cross-onshore winds, small weak waves, and generally messy conditions. You’ll want to sit that one out.
Now, the standout. Wednesday morning, July 29th, is where it gets interesting. The swell jumps to 6ft from the NNW, with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is strong (684). The wind is glassy from the NNE, so the waves will be clean. This is the best of the whole run. It’s a solid head-high wave, but at 6ft, it’s a bit much for the beginners. For everyone else, it’s the morning to be in the water. The swell direction is from the NNW, which is just off the optimum NW for the break, so it’s still hitting the beach well.
Thursday morning, July 30th, is still in the mix with 6ft from the NW and a long 11-second period. The combined energy is very strong (836), but the wind is cross-onshore, so it won’t be as clean as Wednesday. The long period means the swell will have more energy and longer gaps between sets, which is good for timing, but it might break a bit straight across the beach. It’s a watch-and-see.
After that, the surf drops off again. Friday, July 31st, through to the end of the first week of August, is mostly poor with small, weak waves and fresh winds. Not worth chasing.
So, the best on offer is Wednesday morning, July 29th. Glassy, 6ft, and decent period. Get on it.
