Table - best surf conditions forecast for Playa de Gaztetape over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a long stretch of quiet conditions ahead here at Playa de Gaztetape. The water is running a super warm 76°F right now, which is way above normal for this time of year – feels like a bath, but don’t get too excited because the surf is about as flat as a pancake for the next week.
The first few days of the forecast are essentially a write-off. Tuesday afternoon (07 July) through to Thursday (09 July) is nothing but tiny, weak, crossed-up junk. We’re looking at waves around 1 ft to 2 ft with short, choppy periods and combined energy barely cracking 30-80 (very weak). The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making it a total mess. Not worth a second look.
Friday morning (10 July) is the first tiny glimmer of hope. The swell bumps up to 3 ft from the NW with a combined energy of 120 (moderate), and the wind goes glassy — dead calm. That’s the kind of clean surface you want to see. But the period is still only 9 seconds, so it’s a bit of a weak, lumpy groundswell, and the waves themselves are just "surfable but very ordinary." For a beginner, those little 3 ft rollers with zero wind might be a fun, safe paddle, but don’t expect any power.
After that, it’s a long, bleak run. From Saturday (11 July) all the way through to Wednesday (22 July), we’re looking at a massive gap of nearly 12 days where the surf is consistently poor. The swell heights mostly bounce between 0.7 ft and 3 ft, periods are a mix of short and weak, and the combined energy stays in the low teens to low 100s (very weak to moderate). Winds are often light but cross-onshore or onshore, keeping the surface messy. There are a few dawn patrol moments with glassy conditions—like Friday morning (17 July) and Sunday morning (19 July)—but the swell is just too small and weak to make anything of it. Those 1 ft to 3 ft waves with a short period won’t give you a proper ride.
The best on offer? Honestly, it’s a tough call because nothing stands out as a true winner. If I had to pick the least worst, it’s Friday morning (10 July). That 3 ft NW swell with glassy conditions is the only time you’ll get a clean, rideable wave, even if it’s small and weak. The water is warm, the crowds are only "sometimes" a problem, and it’s a consistent beginner break for a reason. For a total beginner, that’s your window. For anyone else, pack a towel and a book.
The rest of the month is a flat spell. It’s normal for the area to have these quiet runs, but it doesn’t stay poor forever — forecasts can change. For now, the kites might have a better time than the surfers on those breezy afternoons, but for a paddle surfer? It’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
