The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Playa de Gaztetape for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the start of this run is a total washout. From Friday the 21st through to Thursday the 27th of August, it’s a grim stretch. The wind is mostly junk – cross or onshore – and the swell is either tiny or a messy chop. You’d be wasting your time. It’s a proper dry spell.
But just when you’re about to give up, the end of the week delivers. The absolute standout is Friday morning, the 28th of August. We’ve got a solid 7ft swell from the WNW, with a 10-second period. That’s a proper groundswell with some grunt, and the combined energy reading is a massive 1036. The real kicker is the wind: it’s glassy. Completely dead calm. For a spot that’s open to the NW, that’s about as good as it gets. The waves will be clean, peeling, and perfect for a beginner-friendly wave like this. It’s a touch off the optimum NW direction, but with that glassy surface, it’ll be dreamy.
The swell gets even bigger in the afternoon, hitting 10ft with a combined energy of 1666, but the wind swings cross-on from the NNW, so it’ll get a bit lumpy. And at that size, it’s getting into expert-only territory, especially on a beach break.
After that peak, it settles down. Saturday the 29th has a clean-ish 5ft NW swell in the morning, but the wind is cross-shore, so it won’t be as clean. Then we get a few days of small, ordinary waves. There’s a glassy morning on Sunday the 30th with a 4ft NW swell, but it’s nothing special. And another glassy morning on Monday the 31st with a tiny 3ft.
The second week is quiet. The only flicker of hope is on Saturday the 5th of September, with a 3ft NW swell (9 seconds) and glassy conditions in the morning. The combined energy is 295, so it could be a fun little session, but it’s a long way out.
So, here’s the deal: forget the first week. The one to get excited about is Friday the 28th of August, first light. That’s your best bet. Get on it early, because when it’s glassy and head-high, this place will be packed.
Rusty.
