Alright, let’s get straight into it, folks. Rusty here.
Look, I’m gonna level with you straight up. This 16-day outlook for Mutriku is about as flat as a week-old beer. There are zero good surf options in the entire window. The swell energy is weak to non-existent, the winds are mostly junk, and every single period is marked as "poor surf conditions." It’s a tough run.
The first week is a write-off. From Tuesday, July 7th, right through to the end of the following week, we’ve got one tiny, weak NW swell after another, with periods all over the place—some short and messy, some a bit longer but still without any power. The combined swell energy barely gets into triple digits a couple of times, hitting 202 on Sunday the 12th, but that’s still only moderate energy and it’s got a cross-onshore wind ruining it. The water is sitting at a very unseasonable 75°, which is 8° warmer than normal—way out of the ordinary—but that doesn’t help the waves.
The only break on offer is Mutriku itself, a sheltered reef that works best on a NW swell and needs offshore SSW winds. We’re getting that NW direction a fair bit, sure, but the swell heights are tiny—mostly 1.0 ft to 3 ft—and the wind is almost always cross-onshore or onshore. There are a few fleeting glassy moments on Friday morning, Sunday morning, and a couple of mornings in the second week, but with wave heights barely reaching 3 ft and weak energy, it’s just not going to produce anything rideable.
Mutriku is also described as inconsistent, and this run proves why. Days and days go by with nothing. For a spot like this, a blank run is more normal than unusual. It tends not to stay poor for long, but forecasts can change. For now, don’t bother. The kite surfers might find something in that Sunday afternoon on the 12th when the energy bumps up and the wind is light cross-shore, but for a paddle surfer? Nothing.
Hang in there. Check back in a few days. The sea might wake up.
Rusty.
