The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the Mutriku stretch for the next couple weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a solid pulse of swell hitting on Friday morning, August 21st. That’s the real standout in the whole 16-day window. The reef at Mutriku will be a sheltered little gem, handling a NW swell around 6ft with a period of 10 seconds – that’s got some proper grunt. The combined energy of all swells here is a chunky 716, so we’re talking moderate to strong wave energy. But the real cherry on top? A light cross-offshore breeze from the west at 6 mph, keeping the faces clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there, just a normal late August feel. The break is sheltered, but it’s a reef, and it’s rated for beginners – though with that size, it’s not a total pushover. The swell is coming from the optimum direction for this spot (NW), so the lines should wrap in nicely. The sets might be a bit inconsistent due to the break’s nature, but when it comes, it’ll be worth it. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Friday afternoon, August 21st, the swell drops a touch to 6ft, but the wind swings NW and goes cross-shore, so the quality fades. The combined energy is still decent at 565, but it’s not as clean as the morning.
Now, Saturday the 22nd through to Thursday the 27th is a real dry spell. The swell drops off, the wind gets messy, and the scores are flat. There’s a tiny window on Thursday morning, August 27th, with a weak NW swell of 2ft and offshore wind from the SW, but at 12 mph, it’s a bit blowy, and the combined energy is only 114 – thin stuff. Not worth paddling out for.
Then we get our second real highlight: Friday morning, August 28th. The swell builds back up to 7ft from the WNW, 10-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 836. That’s a solid pulse. The wind? Glassy. A light WSW breeze, 3 mph, means the surface will be like a mirror. This is a proper morning session, and the swell direction is still in the sweet spot for Mutriku. But heads up – 7ft on a reef is starting to get punchy, maybe more for the experienced crew. The afternoon pushes up to 8ft, but the wind shifts onshore, so it’ll get lumpy and messy.
After that, the swell backs off again. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th offer some small, glassy windows – Sunday morning has 4ft from the NW and a glassy easterly breeze, but the combined energy is only 181, and the period is short at 8 seconds. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about. Monday the 31st is similar, with a 3ft WNW swell and glassy conditions, but again, small and weak.
The first week of September is a wasteland. The swell drops to under 3ft, the periods are short, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on. The last day in the window, Saturday, September 5th, shows a tiny 2ft NW swell with a very long period of 15 seconds, and glassy conditions. The combined energy is 271, which is weak, but that long period could make the reef a bit more interesting – though it’s really small. It’s a long way off, so don’t bank on it.
So, the best on offer is hands-down Friday morning, August 21st, with the 6ft NW swell and clean cross-offshore wind. The second best is Friday morning, August 28th, with the 7ft WNW swell and glassy conditions, but it’s a bigger, more powerful wave. Everything else is either too small, too messy, or a long way out with low confidence.
Rusty, signing off.
