The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the surf for our stretch of coast. It’s a bit of a mixed bag for the next couple of weeks, so don’t get too excited all at once. We’ve got a slow start, then a couple of windows that look proper, and the rest is just you keeping an eye on the ocean.

Right now, the opening act is all about waiting. The first worthwhile surf shows up on Thursday morning. It’s not huge, but it’s clean. We’re looking at chest-high waves around 4ft with a solid NW groundswell. The wind is light and cross-offshore, leaving the surface glassy and inviting. The water is about average for this time of year, so no shock to the system when you get in. This is the pick of the first few days, so if you can sneak out, do it.

Thursday afternoon gets a bit messy with a light cross-onshore breeze, so the morning is the call there. Friday the swell bumps up a touch to about 6ft, but the wind swings onshore and brings some rain showers. It’s gonna be a bit lumpy and generally not worth your time unless you’re desperate for a mediocre paddle.

After that, we hit a real dry spell. From Saturday the 22nd through to Wednesday the 26th, it’s small, weak, and mostly messy. There are some clean moments, like Monday morning with a bit of offshore wind, but there’s just no size or power to make it interesting. The swell energy is mostly pitiful, with readings down in the double digits. It’s a good time to work on your board repair or just watch the horizon.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. The forecast shows a proper pulse of energy arriving on Thursday the 27th. The morning is still a bit of a question mark, but the afternoon brings a solid 10ft of swell. That’s a proper step up. Now, this is a reef break, and while it handles size, 10 feet is pushing into expert-only territory. The period is short, around 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and maybe not as well-shaped as you’d hope for that size. It’s promising, but treat it with respect.

After that, the real standout of the whole period looks like it’s lining up for Friday the 28th. The morning has that same NW swell, dropping a bit to about 6ft, but the wind is light and cross-offshore again. The energy reading is strong, in the 600s, and the combination of size and clean conditions makes this a proper call. This is the one to circle on the calendar.

We’ve got another fantastic window on Saturday the 29th. It’s glassy in the morning with around 7ft of west-northwest swell and a clean, light wind. It’s still on the bigger side, so keep your wits about you, but the conditions are going to be beautiful. That morning session is looking like one of the best of the whole two weeks, right up there with Friday morning for size and cleanness. The afternoon stays big but the wind turns a bit cross-on, so the morning is key.

The following days keep the swell alive, but it starts to lose its magic. Sunday the 30th has a glassy morning with 5ft waves, but it’s not exactly firing, and the afternoon gets bigger and messier. Monday the 31st is similar, with clean conditions but less consistency and size. This stretch is more about a casual paddle than a serious session.

For the first week of September, it’s a hold-your-horses sort of deal. There are waves, bumping up again to over 7ft at times, but the winds are mostly onshore or light cross-shore. The periods are short, and the conditions don’t look like they’ll line up for a proper clean day. It’s promising for a bit of size, but don’t book time off work for it yet.

So here’s the bottom line. If you’re keen, Thursday morning the 20th is a fun, clean start. But the real fireworks are on Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th, with solid waves and clean morning conditions. Those are the days to be out there. The rest is just waiting for the next pulse.

Signing off, Rusty.
