Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here with the imperial version of the same outlook. Let’s be real—this is a tough one to get excited about. We’re looking at a long stretch of barely anything worth surfing, right up until the second week, and even then, it’s just barely surfable.
The only break in the picture is Mutriku, a reef break that’s already inconsistent and needs everything to line up just right. It’s sheltered, so it takes a clean NW swell and some offshore wind to really work. That combo is just not happening for most of this forecast.
Starting out on Saturday the 4th of July and right through the first week, the surf is tiny and weak. Swell heights are mostly 1ft to 2ft, with periods under 10 seconds. The wind is cross-on or onshore nearly the whole time. The combined wave energy is low, with most readings under 100, and even the highest early on (145) still means weak, gutless waves. There’s a couple of glassy mornings on the 9th and 10th, but the swell is so small—barely 2ft to 2ft—that you’d be better off swimming.
That trend holds. Around the 12th and 13th of July, we see swell bump up to about 3ft to 3ft, and energy climbs back to 154, but the wind stays cross-on and the wave quality is still poor. The 15th of July morning gives us glassy conditions again, but the swell is only 3ft with a short 8-second period—not much push there.
Then, on Friday the 17th of July, the energy finally spikes hard to 258 and 275, with swell hitting 4ft to 5ft from the WNW to NW. This is the first real pulse of the whole forecast. The period is still on the short side, and the wind is light but not ideal—mostly cross-on or onshore. Still, it’s got more power than anything else we’ve seen.
The standout, and I mean the only real chance in 16 days, is Saturday the 18th of July morning. We’ve got waves around 4ft from the NW, a glassy surface with light NNE breeze, and it’s the only slot in the whole forecast that’s rated as even “surfable.” It’s not going to be a classic, but if you’re jonesing for a paddle, that’s your window.
After that, Sunday the 19th drops back into poor conditions and fading swell. It’s a long, flat stretch with very little to work with. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t plan your week around it.
Rusty.
