The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at the coming weeks for Mutriku.
We’ve got a bit of a stop-start pattern here, so don’t get too excited too fast. The first real chance for a wave comes up on Thursday morning, the 20th of August. It’s not huge, with a 4ft NW swell, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean. The water is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, sitting at 77°, which is a solid five degrees above what you'd usually expect. That’s a treat. The combined swell energy is moderate at 422. It’s a reef break that’s inconsistent, so you’ll have to wait for the sets, but when they come, it’s a good option for a beginner. Just know that crowds are a possibility here sometimes.
Friday morning, the 21st, is the real standout. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the NW, period hanging at 10 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 1149, so there’s proper power behind it. The wind is cross-off again, keeping it clean. This is the best on offer in the whole window. It’s solid but not too big for a confident surfer. That’s your session.
Saturday and Sunday drop off quickly. The swell fades, wind turns onshore or crosses, and it’s not worth paddling out. Monday the 24th has glassy conditions but the swell is tiny, just 1ft, and the energy is almost nothing at 9. That’s a lake, not surf.
There’s a gap of a few days here with nothing worth jumping for. Then Tuesday morning, the 25th, has a clean 4ft WNW swell with light cross-off wind, but the period is short at 7 seconds, and the energy is weak (166). It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
The next real promise doesn’t come until Friday morning, the 28th of August. That’s over a week away. You’re looking at a 7ft NW swell with a 10-second period. The wind is cross-off and light, so it’ll be clean. The energy is strong at 872. This is your second standout. It’s a little bigger, so not one for the beginners, but good for anyone with a bit of experience. Saturday the 29th morning holds similar, with a 6ft NW swell and clean conditions, energy at 587.
Sunday the 30th morning is glassy with a 7ft NW swell. The energy is strong at 635. That’s a magic morning if the tide plays ball, but be aware it’s a strong swell for a reef break, so watch the shallow sections. Monday the 31st morning is also glassy, with a 6ft NW swell. Another clean one.
After that, the quality drops again. There’s a bit of a lull through the start of September, but Thursday morning the 3rd of September looks promising: glassy conditions with a 6ft NW swell, good period of 10 seconds, and moderate energy at 599. That’s a solid morning, but it’s far out, so keep an eye on the forecasts.
Overall, if you can make Friday the 21st or Friday the 28th, you’re onto a winner. The rest is patchy.
Rusty.
