Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mutriku over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight about it – this is a tough run for Mutriku. We’re looking at a long, frustrating stretch with barely a whisper of decent surf for the first ten days or more. The first real chance of something rideable doesn’t pop up until Thursday the 23rd of July, but even then the wind is messy. The only true standout window is Friday the 24th of July, but it comes with big caveats.
Looking at the whole picture, the first two weeks are dominated by tiny, weak swell. The water is much warmer than normal at 76°, which feels nice, but the waves are small – mostly below 2ft with short periods around 5 to 6 seconds and very weak energy. The wind is glassy or light on a few mornings, like Tuesday the 14th and Saturday the 18th of July, but there’s simply no swell to work with. It’s a real waiting game.
The first sign of life arrives on Sunday morning the 20th of July. Swell jumps to 4ft from the NNW with a period of 6 seconds and moderate energy. But the wind is cross-onshore from the NW, so it’s wind-affected and messy. The next few days see the swell holding around 4ft as we head into Wednesday the 22nd of July, with periods stretching to 9 seconds and energy climbing. Still, that cross-onshore wind from the NNW kills the quality.
Then, on Thursday the 23rd of July morning, things finally get interesting. The swell hits 6ft from the NW with a 10-second period and a massive energy reading. That’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is light cross-shore from the NW, 10 km/h. This is the best the forecast has to offer. It’s a reef setup, which will handle that long-period swell well, but the wave height is over 5ft – so it’s getting into intermediate territory, definitely not for beginners. The period at 10 seconds is solid, meaning good shape.
Friday the 24th of July morning holds similar size, 6ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, strong energy. The wind is cross-shore from the WNW at 15 km/h – still manageable. This is a close second, and a good alternative. After that, the swell fades quickly through the weekend, dropping back under 3ft by Saturday the 25th of July, with energy falling and cross-onshore winds returning.
So, the standout is Thursday the 23rd of July morning at Mutriku. It’s a reef break that works best on NW swell, which is exactly what’s forecast. The light cross-shore wind will keep it clean. The one to watch: the afternoon turns onshore and choppy, so get in early. This break is inconsistent, which makes this pulse even more worth chasing. Crowds are possible, so don’t expect it empty.
After that, it’s back to small, weak surf for the final days of the month. Friday the 27th of July morning is glassy but with only 2ft of swell – not worth the paddle.
Rusty.
