The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk Mutriku for the next 16 days. I gotta be straight with you – this is about as quiet as it gets. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out stretch of flat or near-flat conditions, and the one tiny window that shows up is barely worth a paddle. Mutriku is an inconsistent reef break, and this forecast confirms why – it’s a spot that rarely fires, and this run is a perfect example of that.
The first record is Saturday July 18. The water’s sitting at 77° – that’s a massive 7° warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’s like bathwater. But the swell? Tiny. 0.7ft from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, combined energy of only 10 (weak). Wind is light onshore, and the wave comment says “poor surf conditions.” That’s the story for most of the next week.
Sunday the 19th through Saturday the 26th, we see a few pulses of small northerly swell – heights between 1.0ft and 5ft, periods mostly 6–8 seconds, combined energy peaking at 230 (moderate) on Sunday afternoon the 26th. But the wind is never clean – it’s cross-on or onshore, and the waves are described as “poor surf conditions” every single time. The only exception is a couple of glassy mornings on the 23rd and 24th, but the swell is only 2ft and short period, so you’re looking at barely a ripple.
Then comes Monday July 27. That’s the only day where the guidance says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s the morning session: 4ft from the NW with a 10-second period, combined energy 240 (moderate), and glassy wind. That’s your best chance – and it’s not great. The swell is small, the period is decent but not long enough to really juice the reef, and the wave quality is just “ordinary.” After that, the rest of the 16 days fades back into tiny, messy, or onshore junk – nothing worth loading up the board for.
Honestly, this is a blank run. Mutriku is an inconsistent spot, and this stretch shows it. If you’re desperate, the morning of Monday July 27 might give you a few weak, clean lines, but don’t expect much. Otherwise, wait for the next forecast. The water’s unusually warm, but that’s about the only highlight.
