The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for our stretch of coast.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – the first week and a half is a write-off. We’re lookin’ at a real flat spell. From Friday the 21st right through to the end of the month, it’s a whole lot of nothin’ worth paddlin’ out for. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the energy readings are just sad. We’re talkin’ combined energy stuck below 200 (mostly between 12 and 306) – that’s whisper-level weak. You’d be better off takin’ the dog for a walk or cleanin’ out the garage. There’s a tiny flicker on Thursday the 27th morning with a glassy 3 ft, but it’s short period (8 seconds) and the score is still a dud. Not worth gettin’ wet for.
Then, finally, things start to stir. The first real sign of life pops up on Friday the 2nd of September. Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd have some proper size rollin’ in, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The standout window is Wednesday the 2nd of September. The morning pushes 8 ft from the west, and the afternoon jumps to a solid 10 ft, also from the west. The period is a decent 9 to 10 seconds, so it’s got some push. The combined energy jumps hard – 1020 on Wednesday morning and a meaty 1700 on Wednesday afternoon. That’s serious energy. The wind is offshore from the east-southeast, which keeps things clean. Now, this is expert territory. Over 8 ft, it’s for the lads who know what they’re doin’. The break is Port Isaac, and it’s fairly exposed to the west-northwest swell, which is exactly what we’re gettin’. It’s a fairly consistent spot, and it’s a beginner-friendly break, so on a normal day it’s soft. But on a day like this, with that much power, it’ll be a different beast. It can get crowded sometimes, so get there early.
The water temp is about 66°F, which is a good 4°F warmer than normal for this time of year – feels like a bit of a tropical treat.
The swell hangs around into Thursday the 3rd, with 7 ft in the morning, but the wind is cross-shore and it gets a bit lumpy. By Friday and Saturday the 4th and 5th, the swell is still there – 6 ft to 5 ft – but the wind gets on it again, making it a choppy, onshore mess. Not worth it.
So, for the whole 16-day stretch, the one true standout is Wednesday the 2nd of September at Port Isaac. If you’re an expert and you’ve been waitin’ for some juice, that’s your day. The rest of the time, it’s a long, flat wait.
Rusty.
