The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at this one. I’m going to be straight with you – the outlook for Port Isaac over the next 16 days is a real struggle. There are no good surf options on offer here. The whole stretch from 17 July right through to 1 August is a total write-off.
We start with Friday 17 July – the swell is tiny, just 0.7 ft from the west, with a short period of 8 seconds. The wind is onshore, then cross-shore, and the wave energy is next to nothing (9–10). It’s just poor surf conditions. Saturday 18 July sees a slight bump to 2–3 ft from the NNW, but the period drops to 5 seconds, and the wind is straight onshore, blowing at 12–19 mph. The combined energy creeps up to 41, but it’s still messy and weak. Sunday 19 July is more of the same – onshore wind, short period, poor quality.
The whole first week is a grind. The wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell stays small, mostly under 3 ft, with periods flitting between 4 and 10 seconds. The energy never gets above 81, and that’s only for a brief moment. There’s no clean window, no proper swell direction aligning with the optimum WNW for Port Isaac. Even when the wind drops to a light breeze on 21 July, the swell is a pathetic 1 ft – not worth paddling for.
Towards the end of the month, on 25 July, we see the biggest swell of the period – 5 ft from the WNW, with a period of 6 seconds. The energy jumps to 195–207, which is moderate, but it’s still onshore wind at 16 mph. That’s a choppy, blown-out mess, not a good surf. For a beginner spot like Port Isaac, anything over 5 ft starts to get a bit much, but with the wind on it, it’s just ugly.
The last few days, from 29 July to 1 August, the swell fades back to 1–2 ft, with periods of 8–11 seconds. The wind stays onshore or cross-onshore. The combined energy drops to 30–68. There’s no standout, no hidden gem.
This is a classic blank run for this area – it happens. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you’re a beginner, you’d be wasting your time. For anyone else, it’s a good week to check the tides, fix your gear, and wait for the next proper swell.
