The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. First up, the big picture. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. We’ve got some size coming, but the wind’s going to be the main player, and for the most part, it’s not playing nice. The water’s already running warm for this time of year, sitting around 66°, which is a couple of degrees above where we’d normally expect it, so that’s a bonus if you’re in the water.

The first bit of the window is pretty grim. Thursday the 20th is a washout with a fresh cross-onshore breeze and lumpy 5ft of short-period slop. Nothing doing there. Friday the 21st drops in size but stays poor. We’re looking at a few days of tiny, weak waves through the 22nd and 23rd, with the odd clean window on Saturday morning when the wind goes light easterly, but the swell’s only 2ft with a long period. It’s surfable, but you’ll be chasing ankle-biters. The energy’s weak, too, sitting at just 69 for that session. Not worth getting wet for, really.

We stay flat and small through the 24th and 25th, with clean but tiny conditions. The wind’s offshore at times, but there’s just no juice in the water. The combined energy is next to nothing, single digits to low twenties. This is a waiting game.

Then we get a pulse of energy on Thursday the 27th. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the west, with a 9-second period, and the energy reading climbs to 126. The wind’s light and clean early, with a gentle cross-offshore from the WSW. That’s your best chance for a surfable wave in the first week. It’s not big, but it’s clean and the water’s warm. Get on it if you can.

After that, it gets real again on the 28th, with a cross-onshore wind blowing into a rising 5ft swell. It’s messy and not worth your time. Saturday the 29th brings more size, with 7ft in the morning, but it’s still wind-affected. The afternoon jumps to 10ft, and the energy meter goes through the roof to 1522. That’s strong energy, but the wind is howling cross-shore and it’s lumpy as anything. This one’s for the experts only, and even then, it’s a war zone. Not a paddle surf session – more like a kite-surfing day if you’re into that.

Sunday the 30th stays big, with 10ft and strong energy again around 1416. The morning is cross-shore and bumpy, the afternoon goes cross-off but it’s still a solid 8ft. It’s powerful, but the quality is questionable. The following week starts with a drop-off in size and some stormy weather on the 31st, before another pulse of groundswell swings through from the 1st of September. We’re looking at 6ft to 7ft of west swell, but the wind is on it, making for lumpy, poor conditions. That run carries through the 2nd and into the 3rd, with the swell hanging around 4ft to 7ft, but it’s overshadowed by the wind again.

The long-range stuff into the 4th of September sees more of the same – some size, but a cross-onshore breeze and a choppy mess. The one true standout in this whole window is that Thursday morning on the 27th of August. It’s not the biggest, but it’s clean, and that makes all the difference. The swell’s from the W, at 3ft, which is right in the pocket for Port Isaac. Again, it’s not huge, but it’s probably the best quality-to-size ratio we get.

Don’t hold your breath for the bigger days; they come with a ton of wind and chop. Stay patient, pick your moment, and that Thursday morning session is your best bet.

Rusty.
