The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Port Isaac over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak, and mostly messy conditions. From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the month, the swell is barely a ripple, with heights mostly under 2ft and combined wave energy stuck in the weak zone (under 100). Winds are a mixed bag of cross-off, onshore, and cross-shore, but none of it is doing us any favours. There’s a real gap in quality surf here – over a week of nothing worth paddling out for.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Thursday, the 27th. The afternoon picks up a bit with 3ft from the WSW, period of 9 seconds, and the energy jumps to a moderate 153. The winds are light and cross-off, making it clean. It’s small, but it’s the first thing that’s even surfable.
Now, the standout for the whole period is Friday, the 4th of September. The morning brings a solid 8ft groundswell from the west, with a 10-second period and a strong 1004 energy reading. The wind is light and cross-off from the SSW, so it’ll be clean. That’s proper size – over 8ft, so this one is for experienced surfers only. It’s a bit of a long-range call, so keep an eye on it, but if it lines up, Port Isaac (Cornwall) will have some serious muscle. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 65°F for the time of year, which is a nice bonus if you’re getting in the water.
Saturday morning the 5th and Sunday morning the 6th are worth a mention too, with 6ft and 7ft west swell, clean winds, and solid energy (405 and 650). It’s still big and powerful, so again, not for the beginners. The 5th afternoon and 6th afternoon get a bit messy with wind, so the mornings are the go.
Overall, the best bet is Friday morning, the 4th of September. Big, clean, powerful west swell. Get on it if you’ve got the experience.
Rusty.
