The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Crackington Haven.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: this is a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty flat and messy. We’re starting with a bit of a gap here, because the first few days are a write-off. You’re looking at a real quiet spell, with nothing worth paddling out for until maybe the very end of the run.
The first real blip of interest comes on the 23rd of July. The morning and afternoon both have a 2 ft swell rolling in from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. It’s not much to write home about on the size front, but the wind is what makes it interesting – a fresh offshore from the southeast, 19 to 22 mph. That’ll clean the faces up real nice. The combined energy is weak though, only 45 and 43 (moderate wave energy). It’s a beginner-friendly height, so it’s safe for the groms.
Then we get a bit of a bump on the 25th of July. The Saturday morning sees a 3 ft west swell, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit bumpy and weak. The wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy. The combined energy climbs to 105 (moderate wave energy) in the morning and 140 (moderate wave energy) in the afternoon – the most energy we see in the whole run. Still, the poor surf conditions tag is on there, so it’s not going to be a classic.
The 26th of July has a similar 3 ft west swell, but the wind goes cross-off from the south, which is a bit better. The energy is down to 103 (moderate wave energy) in the morning, but by the afternoon a near gale (31 mph) from the SSW is blowing. That’s too much wind for a pleasurable paddle.
Honestly, the standout here is the morning of the 23rd of July. That fresh offshore wind on a tiny, clean wave is the only window where the conditions line up. The 25th has the most energy, but the wind messes it up. For the rest of the period, it’s a lot of onshore wind and small, weak surf. The water temperature is a very unusual 66°F for this time of year, much warmer than normal.
If I’m being honest, with the swell being so small and the wind often cross-on or strong, this setup might be more interesting for the kite surfers on the bigger, windier days than for us paddle surfers. It’s a blank run, and that’s just how it goes sometimes in this area.
Rusty, signing off.
