Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, it’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – the next couple weeks at Crackington Haven ain’t looking good. Small, cruddy waves with cross-onshore wind messing up most days. The water is a warm 63°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only bright spot.
Right now through the start of July, we’re stuck with tiny 3ft to 2ft swell from the west, short period around 8 to 10 seconds. Combined energy is moderate at best (199), but it’s all cross-onshore wind from the west-northwest, so it’s choppy and messy. No good. That runs through Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th, then into Monday the 6th – all the same: small, weak, and blown out.
Tuesday the 7th is even smaller – 2ft and dropping combined energy down to 36. Still cross-onshore. Not worth paddling out.
Then Wednesday morning the 8th things look a little interesting. For a brief moment we get glassy conditions with easterly wind at just 3 mph, and the swell is still a tiny 2ft from the west at 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak (61) and the wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a paddle for a gutless wave, but if you’re desperate for a splash, that’s your window. Crowds are sometimes at this exposed beach break, and with waves this small, you might get it to yourself. Optimum direction is west-northwest, and we’ve got west swell, so not a perfect match.
Thursday the 9th brings clean offshore winds from the east-northeast at 12-18 mph, but the swell is still just 2ft and weak (63). The glassy faces will be there, but there’s almost no push. Friday the 10th is better – offshore east-southeast winds at 15 mph in the morning, clean conditions, and the swell holds at 2ft from the west at 9 seconds. Combined energy is still low (80), but it’s as good as it gets for a few weeks. Still, it’s beginner-friendly size and the water’s warm.
From Saturday the 11th onward, it’s back to cross-onshore or onshore wind, with swell dropping to 2ft and below. There’s a brief clean moment on Tuesday the 14th with light cross-offshore wind from the northeast and swell at 2ft, but the energy is weak (78). Nothing to get excited about.
The rest of the week into the 19th is all tiny – 1ft to 1ft, short period, mostly cross-onshore or onshore wind. The last few days see combined energy drop to just 13 – that’s barely a ripple. This stretch looks more like a lake than a surf break. For paddle surfing, it’s a dry spell. If the wind picks up, it might be a spot for kite folk, but for a surfer, you’re better off waiting for a proper swell.
Best bet? Wednesday morning the 8th or Friday the 10th for the cleanest conditions, but keep expectations low. The standout is none – nothing here is worth a special trip.
Rusty.
