The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Crackington Haven.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry spell of flat, messy conditions before any real chance of a wave. The first week and a half is almost a complete write-off, with tiny swell and poor surf quality. The only faint glimmer in the whole 16-day window is a brief window right around the 5th of September, but even that comes with some serious caveats.
From now through the end of August, it’s a struggle. The swell is tiny, often under 2ft, with weak energy. The wind is mostly cross or cross-on, and the water is a balmy 66°F (5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s notably warm). The first few days of September are similar, with very small surf and poor conditions.
The only real pulse of energy arrives on Thursday, 5th September. The morning shows a 5ft groundswell from the W, with a very long period of 11 seconds (combined energy of 584 – that’s strong, folks). The wind is cross-off from the SSW, which should keep things clean. That’s the best we get. But here’s the rub: that size, with a long period, will be dumping hard on the beach. For a beginner, 5ft is too big, and for anyone, that long period will make it close out fast on a beach break like this. It’s a proper expert-only window. The afternoon sees the energy drop to 4ft, still with clean wind, but heavy rain is forecast.
Bottom line: There’s no standout surf here. The whole 16-day window is dominated by flat spells and poor conditions. The only motivated session would be for experienced surfers paddling out on the morning of the 5th of September, and even then, it’s a gamble. For everyone else, leave the boards in the van.
Rusty.
