The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's cut through it for this stretch of coastline. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, the next couple of weeks look like a tough slog for the most part. There's a lot of junky, wind-blown stuff out there and a real lack of quality.
The water is a warm 66°F, which is about 4°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you'll be comfortable while you're getting nothing.
Monday the 17th, we're looking at about 3ft of weak, choppy cross-onshore junk. Energy is a measly 106, so there's just no push. It's poor, plain and simple. Tuesday and Wednesday get a little bigger, up around 4ft, but the wind stays ugly from the west and northwest, keeping everything lumpy and messy.
Thursday the 20th brings the wind from the northwest, straight offshore, which is a big plus. There's a bit more energy in the water, around 325, with 5ft of swell. But it still says "poor surf conditions." Might be some walls that are rideable, but the shape and period just aren't there to make it good. After that, it's a proper flat spell. From Friday the 22nd through Tuesday the 26th, there's almost nothing rideable, just ankle to knee-high slop. You could probably walk across it.
The outlook gets more interesting as we get into the second week. A bigger pulse of swell builds for Friday the 29th, and the energy numbers start climbing into the 400s, but the wind is on it, and it’s just not gonna be clean. The weekend sees some serious size, with 7ft on Saturday the 30th, and a ton of energy at 637, but again, the northwest wind is going to put some chop on it.
Early next week is when things get properly big. On Monday the 31st, we’ve got 8ft of west swell, and the energy is way up at 646. The only decent window is that afternoon when the wind goes cross-off, but it's still a raw, powerful west swell hitting an exposed beach.
The standout, and the only real reason to get excited, is Tuesday the 1st of September. We're expecting a big groundswell, 8ft with a clean 11-second period. The morning has an offshore southerly wind, which should groom it into nice shape. The energy is through the roof at 1230. That's real, proper surf. It will be too big and powerful for beginners, that's for sure. The afternoon still has 8ft waves, but the wind goes more cross-shore, which will chop it up.
So, what's the call? If you're a beginner, forget this entire stretch. That final pulse is far too big. For the experts, the focus is squarely on the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. It's far out, so it's promising but not certain, but it's got the best combination of size, period, and wind we've seen all forecast. For the crew into kites and foils, this blustery mix might be more fun than trying to surf.
That's the picture. Stay wet.
Rusty.
