Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about Crackington Haven.
It’s a tough stretch ahead for this north Cornwall cobble beach. We’ve got a long, quiet run through the first week and a bit. Honestly, there’s hardly any surf to get excited about until the very back end of the forecast.
From Sunday 5 July right through to Wednesday 15 July, it’s just tiny, weak, and sloppy. Wave heights are mostly below 3ft, and the combined swell energy is weak, often in the 40s and 50s (77), with poor wind conditions messing up any chance of a wave that’s worth paddling for. The only glimmer comes on Wednesday 8 July morning when the wind drops to glassy, but the swell is still a pathetic 2ft. It’s surfable, but barely. That’s not a recommendation, it’s just the least worst of a bad bunch.
We do get a bit of a pulse starting Saturday 18 July. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the west, period is a short 6 seconds, and the energy climbs to 93. The real standout is the Saturday afternoon session: 4ft from the west, period still short at 6 seconds, but the wind goes glassy and the combined energy hits 120 (moderate). That’s the best on offer across the whole outlook. It’s still only a 1/5 in quality, but if you’re desperate, that’s your window. The water is much warmer than normal for July at 63°, so that’s a nice bonus.
Sunday 19 July morning keeps the momentum with 5ft from the west, light offshore wind, and 181 combined energy – clean and rideable, though the 7-second period means waves will be a bit walled up. The afternoon goes glassy again with 4ft. These two days are your only real chance of anything halfway decent.
Then Monday 20 July brings a bigger but messier swell – 6ft to 7ft from the west-northwest, energy surging to 394 and then 510 (strong). But the wind is cross-onshore and chop ruins it. That size, with short period and onshore wind, is more of a washing machine than a surf. For experienced paddlers, maybe the odd slog, but honestly it looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Over the whole 16 days, there are gaps of days with zero worthwhile surf. The only true standout dates are Saturday 18 July afternoon and Sunday 19 July – glassy or light offshore, waist-high waves, moderate energy. Go then if you can.
Rusty.
