The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me level with you about the surf on the Isle of Wight – it's a rough stretch coming up, no sugarcoating it.

We're looking at a long, flat spell ahead for Niton (Isle of Wight). The honest truth is, for the next 16 days, there just isn't anything worth paddling out for. The first surf recommendation doesn't show up at all, and the entire forecast is a blank run of poor surf conditions. It's one of those periods where the ocean just takes a full break.

Let’s walk through it. Wednesday the 15th starts things off with a grotty 5ft swell from the ENE but it's a short period, 6 seconds, and being hammered by a 22 mph cross wind. The combined energy is weak at 119. The water temp is a massively unusual 68°, which is 7° warmer than average – you could nearly swim in boardies, but you wouldn't want to be surfing that mess anyway.

Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th offer nothing but tiny, poor surf with onshore or cross-off winds. Saturday the 18th through to the end of July is a graveyard of swell: we're talking 0.3ft to 3ft at best, with periods all over the shop and mostly cross or cross-onshore breezes. Even on the 26th of July, when we get a glassy morning with a light WNW breeze, the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft with a long 11-second period – that's a lake, not a surf. By the 30th of July, it's completely flat with a zero reading. There's simply no wave energy to work with, the combined energy values are all two-digit figures under 50.

Because the swell is so consistently tiny and the wind is messy, this setup is more interesting for a kite surfer looking for a flat-water session than a paddle surfer.

Keep your chin up, though – this area tends not to stay this dead for long, and forecasts can change. But for now, leave the board in the shed.

Rusty.
