The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and let’s talk about what’s happening at Freshwater Bay. I’m not gonna lie to you—this one’s a tough stretch. The forecast is pretty much a write-off for the whole 16 days if you’re looking for a decent paddle. No standout sessions, no real pulse of energy that’s worth getting excited about. The water temp is sitting at 68°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’ll be a pleasant dip, but that’s about the only upside.
Thursday the 16th through the morning of Friday the 17th is flat and junky. A tiny 3 ft swell from the ENE with a short 5-second period and only 34 (weak energy) isn’t worth suiting up for, especially with a moderate cross-shore wind chopping it up. Friday afternoon cleans up a bit with a light breeze, but the swell drops to 1 ft and 2 (weak energy).
Saturday and Sunday stay tiny. Sunday morning the 19th has a clean, cross-off wind from the NE, but it’s only 3 ft of E swell at 5 seconds and 30 energy – barely a ripple. Monday the 20th is glassy in the morning, but the swell is 1 ft and 3 energy – you’d be bobbing around on a lake.
The pattern doesn’t improve. Tuesday through to the end of the month is a mix of tiny 0.3 ft to 2 ft swells, mostly from the WSW or SW, with periods all over the place. The winds are often cross to cross-on, and the energy stays in the single digits or low teens. There’s a blip on the afternoon of the 31st of July where the swell jumps to 7 ft from the WSW, but the period is only 6 seconds and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-breeze – that’s going to be lumpy, choppy, and messy. The combined energy is 305 (moderate), but with that wind and short period, it’s more of a washing machine than a wave. That’s really only for the hardcore, and even then, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session.
Honestly, there’s nothing here. No hidden gem, no sneaky window. The best advice I can give is to watch the forecast, because it can change, but right now, this is a blank run. Leave the boards at home for a while.
