The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it for Freshwater Bay.
First up, the water is a bit of a shocker right now. We're sitting at 70°, which is a whopping 8° warmer than usual for this time of year. That's seriously unusual... you won't need a spring suit, that's for sure.
Now, for the surf... I'm gonna be straight with you. The next couple of weeks look pretty grim. There's a massive gap with no real surf on offer. From now until the morning of Thursday, September 3rd, it's a long stretch of flat, unsurfable, or just plain messy conditions. The swell energy is mostly weak, often in the low double or single digits. We're seeing a lot of onshore and cross-shore winds, and the swell periods are short, under 8 seconds, so no real push.
The one and only standout in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Thursday, September 3rd. Finally, we get a break. The wind goes glassy, flat calm, which is a huge positive. The swell is a solid 7 ft from the SW, with a 7-second period. The combined energy hits 391, which is moderate to strong. This is a southwest swell direction, and the spot is exposed to the southwest, with the optimum swell direction from the SW. That's a perfect match. However, 7 ft is getting up there, bordering on expert territory, so this is not one for beginners. Also, it's a reef and point setup, which is good, but it's a long-range forecast, so keep an eye on it as we get closer. The afternoon will see the wind swing and the quality drop, so make the most of the morning.
Following that, the Friday morning of the 4th has a glassy, clean 3 ft wave from the WSW, but the energy is much lower, and it's just 'surfable' at best. Nothing to get excited about after that.
So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are a write-off. The one sweet spot to target is the morning of Thursday, September 3rd, with clean, glassy conditions and a solid SW swell. Get on it if you can, but don't bet the house on it just yet.
Rusty.
