The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the next couple of weeks.
Got to be straight with you – Freshwater Bay is looking like a tough stretch. This is a reef and point that needs a solid SW groundswell, but most of this 16-day window is flat and messy. The water is 70°F, which is a whopping 8°F warmer than normal for this time of year, but there's just no energy to work with.
We're staring at a long, dry spell right from the start. From Saturday, August 22nd, all the way through to the morning of Saturday, August 29th, it's nothing but tiny, wind-blown waves with scores of zero. Winds are mostly cross or cross-onshore, and the swell is basically absent.
The first real chance comes on Saturday, August 29th. The morning shows clean, cross-off wind from the W at 22 mph, and the swell finally bumps up to 6ft from the WSW. The combined energy is moderate (277). It's not perfect, but it's the first day that's actually rideable. The afternoon gets bigger, hitting 8ft from the WSW, with the energy jumping to strong (638) and the wind staying cross-off at 19 mph. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it'll be a bit lumpy and disorganized, but it's the standout window. For the more experienced crew, the afternoon could be the one, but it's a single-day event.
After that, Sunday, August 30th, has a clean morning but zero swell, and the rest of the week returns to small, weak, and mostly cross-shore conditions. A few days in early September have clean, cross-off winds, but the swell is tiny – 2ft is the best we see, and that's on Tuesday, September 1st. The period stays short, so the waves will be weak and crumbly.
There's really only one standout in this whole window: Saturday, August 29th. If you can get out for the afternoon, that 8ft WSW swell with clean wind is your best bet. It's a bit on the bigger side, so leave the foamies at home. The rest of the forecast is a washout. Conditions can change, but right now, it's looking like a long wait for one decent day.
Rusty out.
