The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Freshwater Bay is serving up for the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I'm looking at the chart and it's a tough one. We've got a 16-day window, but the first solid session? It's a long wait, my friend. For the first week, and I mean right through until the end of July, the wave energy is just...flat. We're seeing tiny little ripples with combined energy readings in the low single digits to maybe the 20s or 30s (23, 8, 2), which is just not enough to get excited about. The wind, unfortunately, is often onshore or cross-shore, creating a chop that makes those tiny waves even worse. It's a period where you're better off checking the tide pools or finding something else to do.
You do get a few mornings with clean conditions, like Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th, with a gentle cross-offshore breeze, but with the swell height barely reaching 1 ft to 2 ft and the period being short (4-5 seconds), the waves just won't have any push. It's a classic case of looking good but doing nothing.
However, there is a flicker of hope right at the very end. The 31st of July into the 1st of August shows the swell trying to build. By Friday afternoon the 31st, we see the combined energy jump to 101, which is a step in the right direction. The swell height picks up to 5 ft from the East with a period of 5 seconds. The problem is the wind is still a strong cross-shore, making for lumpy, messy conditions. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.
Saturday the 1st of August morning cleans up a bit with a cross-offshore wind, but the swell drops right back down to 1 ft. All in all, I can't point you to a single standout session or break here. The water temperature anomaly is a whopping 8° warmer than normal, so it's going to feel like bathwater, but that doesn't make up for the lack of waves.
Don't throw your board in the bin just yet though. Forecasts can change, and when the energy is this low, it tends not to stay poor forever. Keep your eye on the charts, but for the next two weeks, Freshwater Bay is a soft pass.
Rusty.
