Right, pull up a stump. Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at this stretch of coast, and I’ll be honest with you – for the next couple of weeks, it’s looking like we’ll be doing more talking about surfing than actually doing any. The numbers are just not coming together.
The first few days are a real write-off. We’ve got a tiny bit of swell pushing in around Thursday morning, only 0.7 ft, but with a cross-off wind and weak wave energy (9), it’s just not gonna break with any shape. The water’s sitting at 65 °F, which is a solid 6 °F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s genuinely weird. It feels like a bathtub out there.
Friday (3 July) looks like a tease. Friday morning has a glassy surface and a 1.0 ft swell from the WSW at 11 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell for such a small wave. The energy is low (29), so you’d be floating around with barely a bump. That afternoon, the wind swings to a cross-on 16 mph and kills any chance of a clean face.
The weekend into early next week is just flat or crumbly. Saturday and Sunday have tiny, weak swells never cracking 3 ft, with shifty winds and periods dropping to 4 seconds – that’s wind slop, not a wave you want to paddle for. The combined energy readings barely top 30. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday all sit in the same boat: nothing over 3 ft, and the energy is weak (single-digit and low double-digit numbers).
The only real standout here is a glimmer on Sunday 12 July morning. It’s a total novelty because there is zero swell forecasted – literally a 0. The wind is light offshore from the NW at 6 mph, and the guides say the swell direction from the NW is optimum for Freshwater Bay. But with no swell to work with, that’s just a pretty morning for a coffee, not a surf.
After that, the second week is a dead zone. From the 13th into the 17th, we see nothing but tiny, shifty lumps under 3 ft and choppy onshore winds. The breaks are inconsistent at best, and the energy numbers are in the pits – often single digits. It’s a complete 16-day drought.
For a spot like this, a blank run of this length isn’t surprising. The reef and point setup needs a proper push to come alive, and we’re just not getting it. Don’t bother paddling out unless you have a kite and a strong wind tolerance, because the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing right now. Purely paddle surfing options? None. Zero. Nada.
Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, leave the board in the rack.
