Alright, Rusty here with a look at Freshwater Bay. Straight up, it’s a tough run ahead. This reef and point setup usually needs a good SW swell and some luck with the wind, but for the next couple of weeks, we’re mostly looking at a whole lot of nothing.
The first sign of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Monday the 20th of July. That’s a long wait – nearly two weeks of flat or messy conditions before we get a sniff. Even then, it’s not exactly firing. The water temp on the 5th of July was sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so if you do get in, at least it won’t be a bone-chiller.
So, the long-range call. Monday morning the 20th of July is really the only standout in the whole window, and it’s a bit of a tease. We’ve got a 4ft WSW swell with a 5-second period – short period stuff, so it won’t have much push. But the wind is glassy and from the SW, coming straight offshore for this break. That’s a huge plus, meaning the surface should be clean as a whistle. The combined energy is weak, reading only 61, so don’t expect much power, but it’ll be the best wave shape we've seen in ages. It’s coming right from the optimum SW direction, and it’s a reef and point, so it should hold up okay. The crowds can be “sometimes” a problem here, but with conditions this ordinary for so long, you might actually get a quiet one.
The afternoon of the 20th gets a bit lumpier with a cross-shore wind picking up, so grab that morning window. Everything else in the finder is rated as poor surf conditions. The Sunday morning of the 19th has a bit of size on the menu, but it’s blown out by a fresh NE breeze.
Honestly, it’s a grim couple of weeks with a single, likely quiet, morning on the 20th to aim for. If you’re desperate, that’s your window. Otherwise, just wait it out.
Rusty.
