The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Spekes Mills.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and frustrating. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf with hardly any energy behind it. The first real pulse of size doesn’t show up until late in the window, and even then, the wind is a problem.
The water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s one small comfort while you’re sitting out there waiting for a wave that never comes.
Kicking off Saturday the 18th, it’s a sad 0.7 ft of west swell, with a period of 8 seconds and only 10 units of energy. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NNW, making it messy. Sunday and Monday are more of the same – tiny, weak, and not worth paddling out for. This flat spell really drags on through the week.
We finally see a bit of a bump mid-week, on Wednesday the 22nd, with the swell height creeping up to 3 ft, but it’s from the NNW with a crappy 5-second period and a cross-shore breeze. The wave energy is still low (51 units). It’s just not happening.
The real story starts to change around Monday the 27th of July. The swell picks up to 5 ft from the west, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 168 units. That’s moderate energy, but the wind is howling straight onshore from the west at 15 mph. It’s going to be a bumpy, blown-out mess. Not the kind of day you want to paddle out unless you’re desperate.
The standout, if you can call it that, comes on Thursday the 30th of July. The swell hits 5 ft to 6 ft from the west-southwest and west, with a period of 6-7 seconds and moderate energy (256-310 units). But again, the wind is onshore. It’s a bit of a tease.
Now, the one that catches my eye – and I’m saying this with caution – is Friday the 31st of July. The morning shows a solid 7 ft swell from the west, period of 8 seconds, and a combined energy of 523 units. That’s strong wave energy. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the WSW at 9 mph, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve seen. This is a serious groundswell, and at this size, Spekes Mills is going to be a reef-break challenge. For most of you, 7 ft is expert territory, especially with a bit of cross-onshore chop. The afternoon drops to 6 ft, but the wind goes onshore. The morning session on the 31st is your best shot in this whole 16-day window, but don’t expect it to be clean.
After that, the first couple of days of August just fade back into smaller, lumpy, cross-onshore slop.
So, the honest truth: there’s no real stand-out session here. The 31st of July morning has the most size and power, but the wind is a compromise. The rest of the time, it’s flat, weak, or blown out. If you’re desperate, you might find a ripple on the cleaner mornings (like the 19th, 20th, or 21st), but it’s ankle-biters. Hang tight, and hope the forecasts change.
Rusty.
