The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at this stretch of coast.
Honestly, it’s a tough run for Putsborough across the whole 16-day window. The scores are all zero, which means there’s not a single session that I’d call a goer. The pattern is: tiny swell, wrong wind, and messy conditions. You’re looking at a barren stretch from the 18th of July right through to the 2nd of August.
We start off with a real whimper. Saturday afternoon, the 18th, sees a tiny 0.7ft W swell, but the wind is onshore from the NW and the water is a notable 64°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. The combined energy is barely a whisper at 7 (weak). Not a thing to get excited about.
Sunday the 19th is even smaller. The morning has a 0.3ft NW swell, with a cross-offshore breeze from the E, but it’s just too small to surf. The afternoon is a 0.3ft W swell with a cross-onshore NNW wind, so it’s a no-go. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are the same story: tiny swell, moderate cross-offshore winds in the mornings, but the swell is just 0.7ft. Afternoons get messy with onshore or cross-onshore wind.
The end of the week brings a slight bump. Wednesday the 22nd sees a 3ft NNW swell, but the wind is a messy cross-onshore from the NNW, and the period is a short 4 seconds. The combined energy is 27 (weak), but the conditions are poor. This continues through to the 26th with tiny, weak swell and onshore or cross-onshore wind.
Things start to change around the 27th of July. Monday morning, the swell hits 5ft from the WSW, period 6 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 170 (moderate). But the wind is a cross-onshore from the WNW, making it lumpy. The afternoon has 4ft with a 7-second period, energy at 157, but still cross-onshore. This is the biggest swell of the whole period, but the wind is spoiling it. For a beginner, that 5ft is getting a bit much, and the wind makes it rough.
The 28th and 29th keep the swell around 4ft to 5ft, with a 7-second period. The combined energy stays in the 150-200 range (moderate). The wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s never clean. The 30th sees it build a bit more to 6ft, energy hitting 272 (moderate) and then 306 (strong) in the afternoon, but it’s still cross-onshore from the W.
The 31st of July is the real highlight, but it’s still a mess. Friday morning has a 7ft W swell at 8 seconds, with a combined energy of 441 (strong to very strong). That’s the biggest energy of the whole run. The wind is a gentle cross-onshore from the WSW, so it’s fairly choppy. For a surfer, 7ft is solid, but it’s not clean. The afternoon has 6ft, energy at 367, but moderate cross-onshore wind. This is only for experts, and the conditions aren’t great.
The 1st and 2nd of August fade out with 4ft to 5ft swell, dropping energy, and fresh cross-shore or cross-onshore winds.
So, the brutal truth? There’s nothing here I’d recommend. The whole 16 days is a write-off. The swell is either too small, or when it does come up, the wind is onshore and the conditions are choppy or lumpy. There’s no standout. You’d be better off waiting for the next weather system to shift the wind. For paddle surfing, this is a no-go. If you’re into kitesurfing, those choppy, windy days with 5ft to 7ft swell might be worth a look, but for a surfboard, it’s a blank.
Rusty.
