The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on the table for Putsborough over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak picture. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a write-off, with no good surf on offer. The waves are just too small and the wind is all over the place, making it a tough slog for anyone looking to get a proper session in.
The forecast kicks off on Friday, 21st August with a tiny 2-foot swell from the west-northwest, but a cross-onshore breeze from the north-northwest at 15 mph chops it up something shocking. The combined energy is a weak 76, and it's just not worth paddling out. That same story plays out day after day – we’re talking about a long stretch of poor conditions right through to the end of the month. Even into the first week of September, the swell barely tickles 2 feet, and the wind stays messy. There’s a glimmer of cleaner conditions on the 25th August morning with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3 feet, so you’d be floating, not surfing.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about. Even when the wind turns offshore or cross-offshore, like on the 24th and 25th August, the swell is just too small to generate any rideable waves. The energy readings are mostly in the double digits, which tells you all you need to know. There’s a brief spike in size around the 28th and 29th August, with swell heights hitting 6 to 7 feet, and the combined energy jumps up to 285 and 488 – but that’s all windswell with a short period of 7 to 8 seconds. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore, blowing 15 to 22 mph, so it’s messy, lumpy, and choppy. Honestly, with that setup, it’s looking more interesting for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing.
Bottom line: there’s nothing worth chasing in this outlook. It’s a blank run, and that’s just how it goes sometimes around here. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but for now, I’d say hang up the board for a bit.
