Table - best surf conditions forecast for Putsborough over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what we’ve got on the horizon. Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The next two weeks are looking pretty bleak for any proper surf. The wave energy is just not there. The whole period is marked by tiny swell, often from a poor direction, and onshore or cross-shore wind that’ll chop up what little is there.
There’s nothing rideable for days on end. The first faint glimmer of something that might be okay doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 23rd of July. That’s a long wait – over two weeks of flat to hopeless conditions.
Let’s start with the early stuff, even though it’s bad. Wednesday the 8th of July, we see a 1ft swell from the W, period of 9 seconds. That’s weak, combined energy of just 23, and the wind is glassy in the morning at Putsborough. But even with glassy conditions, the swell is just too small and weak to get excited about. It’s a beginner-friendly day for a paddle, not for a proper wave.
Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th are more of the same – 1ft to 2ft, W swell, short 8-9 second periods. The combined energy struggles to break 60. Friday morning has a clean look with a cross-offshore breeze, which is about the best you’ll get early on, but the surf quality is still poor.
The middle of July, from about the 12th right through to the 22nd, is a write-off. Swell drops to 0.3ft to 0.7ft with occasional longer period stuff (14-19 seconds), but there’s no height to work with. The combined energy is in the teens or low 20s. That’s barely a ripple. Even with offshore wind on the 15th and 16th, there’s nothing to ride.
Now, the standout – and I’m only calling it that because it’s the best of a bad lot – is Wednesday morning the 23rd of July at Putsborough. We get a 2ft swell from the NE, with a short 4-second period. The combined energy is 23, which is still weak, but it’s the biggest swell in weeks. The wind is offshore from the SSE, described as gentle offshore and clean. That’s the magic combination. The break is fairly exposed to swell, and the optimum direction is WNW, so a NE swell is a bit off-angle but not hopeless. The water temperature is average for the time of year. Putsborough is a beginner-friendly spot, so if you’re just wanting a longboard or a foamy and a good morning in the sun, this is the closest we get to a session. It’s still small, so don’t expect barrels.
Crowds at Putsborough are often present, so you’ll have company, but for a few knee-high clean waves, it’s worth the look.
So, if you can wait, the 23rd is your best bet. The rest? Save your energy, check the forecast again in a week.
Rusty.
