The Lowdown
Alright, I’ll switch to feet and miles for you now. Same story, different numbers.
Right now, it’s flat. Nothing doing. From now through to the end of July, it’s a dead spell with no real surf. The water’s warm though, sitting at 64°F – that’s over two degrees warmer than average for this time of year, so it’s a nice swim, but not a surf.
The first real chance of a wave comes on Thursday the 30th of July. That morning, there’s a 5ft swell from the west with an 8-second period, and the wind is a light cross-off from the south. That’s clean. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits 282 (moderate energy). It’s still a marginal call, but it’s the best we’ve got.
For the rest of that week into early August, the swell drops back down. There’s a bit of 4ft to 3ft west swell, but the wind is mostly cross-off from the east or north-east, keeping it clean. The problem is consistency – these waves are small and weak, with combined energy readings mostly under 100, so it’s mushy and gutless.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Thursday the 30th. That’s your best bet. Putsborough is a beginner-friendly spot, fairly exposed to the west-northwest, and it’s fairly consistent when there’s swell. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’ll be glassy. The swell is 5ft, which is a bit much for total beginners, but manageable for anyone with a bit of time in the water. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a short-period wind swell, not a groundswell – it’ll be a bit crumbly, but clean. Crowds are often here, so expect company.
After that, from Friday the 31st onward, it’s small and weak again. Honestly, if you’re desperate, that Thursday morning window is your only real shout. The rest of the forecast is a write-off.
Rusty.
