The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Putsborough has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a bit of a tough stretch.
We start with a real slow spell. From Sunday the 23rd of August right through to the end of the month, it’s pretty flat. There’s tiny swell, mostly around 0.3ft to 2ft, with weak combined energy (between 10 and 88). The wind is mostly cross-off or offshore, keeping it clean, but there’s just no power to work with. We’re talking poor surf conditions the whole way through. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a proper anomaly of 5° – so the water feels nice, but the surf just isn’t there.
We get a bit of a pulse kicking in on Saturday the 29th of August, but it’s a messy one. Swell jumps to 8ft from the west, with combined energy hitting 585 – that’s strong energy – but it’s a short-period windswell (7-8 seconds) and the wind is a strong cross-onshore. That’s big, lumpy, and messy. Only for the experts, and even then, it’s not going to be pretty. The cross-onshore wind will have it chopped up.
The first few days of September don’t look much better. Swell hangs around 1ft to 4ft, but the wind is all over the place – cross, cross-on, and fresh breezes – making for choppy, lumpy conditions. Energy stays low to moderate, topping out at 184. It’s just not coming together.
Then, looking ahead to Sunday the 6th of September, things get a little interesting. We’ve got a 4ft west swell with a 6-second period, combined energy of 180 – moderate – and the wind is offshore from the southeast at 19 mph. That’s fresh offshore and clean. It’s not huge, but for Putsborough, with that offshore wind grooming it, it could be a fun little session for the beginner to intermediate crew. The swell direction (west) is close to the optimum (WNW). It’s a week away, so keep an eye on it, but right now that’s the standout of the whole forecast.
Honestly, if you’re looking for clean, rideable waves over the next couple of weeks, Sunday the 6th of September morning is your best bet. Before that, there’s a lot of waiting around. The long gap from now until then is rough, but that Sunday morning could just make it worth it.
Stay patient,
Rusty
