The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for our little stretch of coast over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, the opening week is a tough watch. We've got a long gap of flat, messy conditions to get through before anything worth paddling out for shows up.
We’re starting dry. Tuesday the 18th through to Monday the 24th of August is basically a write-off. We're looking at weak swell, mostly under 2ft, with a cross-onshore breeze messing things up. The combined energy is tiny, barely hitting 30 on the best days. There's a moment Monday morning the 24th with glassy conditions and a 1ft swell, but it's so small it's barely a ripple. You'd be floating more than surfing.
The first real glimmer of hope comes Tuesday the 25th of August. The morning shows a little bump of 3ft from the WSW, but it's the afternoon that has my attention. We get a clean 4ft W swell pushing in with a moderate offshore breeze from the SSE. The energy jumps right up to 267 – a solid sign. The period is 10 seconds, which is a nice groundswell, offering some decent shape. This is the first window where you'll find a real wave at Putsborough. Expect some company though; it does get crowded here often.
Wednesday the 26th turns ugly again as a fresh cross-onshore wind messes up a 4ft swell. That clean window closes fast.
Now, looking ahead to the start of September. There’s a bit more size on the cards, but it comes with a side of chaos. Saturday the 29th of August has a clean 5ft from the WSW in the morning, but by afternoon it’s 6ft and the wind is howling. Monday the 31st of August sees the swell building to 7ft from the WSW, but the energy is getting serious and it's likely too much for beginners. The wind is cross-off which keeps it clean, but it's a lot of water moving.
The real standout, if you're an experienced surfer, looks to be Tuesday the 1st of September. The swell holds at 7ft from the W, but the combined energy is a massive 1495. That is a lot of power in the water. The period is 10 seconds, so it's got some legs. The wind is cross-shore from the SW, which is okay, but it's a big, powerful swell. This is expert territory only. The shape might be a bit unruly on a beach break with that period, but there will be plenty of juice.
All in all, we've got a slow start, a quick, clean session on the 25th, and then a powerful, potentially unruly pulse for the experienced crew at the very end of the forecast. Keep your eyes on that Tuesday the 25th for the most user-friendly waves of the run.
Rusty.
