The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break it down.
Truth is, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for Putsborough. There’s a long stretch of no-good surf right from the start.
We’ve got a dry spell from Tuesday July 14th all the way through to Sunday July 26th. That’s nearly two weeks of tiny, weak swell with hardly any energy. Waves are mostly 0.3 ft to 1 ft, the period is all over the place, and when the wind is offshore it’s often howling at 15 to 30 mph – just messy. Some days are clean but the swell is completely gutless. A few afternoons tip into onshore chop, and the crowds are often there, but there’s nothing to ride. The water temp is sitting at 64° with a big anomaly of 4°, so it’s much warmer than usual for this time of year – but that’s the only bright spot.
Now, the one real standout comes right at the end of the 16-day window. On Monday July 27th, we finally see a pulse of proper swell. The morning brings 6 ft from the west, period 7 seconds, and the combined energy hits 495 – that’s moderate wave energy. The wind is cross-off from the south at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean. The afternoon holds 6 ft from the west at 8 seconds, with 387 energy, still cross-off. This is the only time in the whole outlook where the surf is even worth a look. It’s a bit punchy, so it’s more for the experienced crew; beginners might find it too much. The swell direction matches the optimum WNW, so it’s coming in right. It’s a long way out, so treat it as promising but not locked in. Tuesday July 28th still has some size at 5 ft to 5 ft, but the wind swings onshore with rain showers, so that window closes fast.
The rest of the week after that fades back into tiny, weak surf with poor conditions. Honestly, there’s nothing else to get excited about.
Rusty out.
