Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming our way.
Honestly, for the next couple of weeks, we're looking at a bit of a flat spell. The swell window just isn't lining up, and we've got a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for. Starting from Monday the 6th of July right through to Saturday the 18th of July, it's a write-off. The waves are tiny, the energy is weak (combined swell energy between 8 and 56), and the conditions are mostly choppy or cross-onshore. There's a little window on Wednesday the 8th with glassy conditions on a 1ft W swell, but it's just not enough push for a proper ride. You'd be better off staying on the beach with a cold one.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope pops up on Sunday the 19th of July. Things start to look a bit more interesting. We've got a moderate offshore wind from the ESE at 16 mph cleaning things up, with a 1ft swell from the WSW. The energy is still moderate at 70, but the period stretches out to 13 seconds, which is a solid groundswell. This could be a good looking session at Putsborough (North Devon), especially with the clean conditions. Sunday afternoon carries on the trend with a 2ft swell from the West and a 12-second period, giving us a combined energy of 90. The cross-off wind from the East at 16 mph will keep those faces clean.
Monday the 20th of July is the standout of the whole outlook, but even then it's modest. It’s the first time the score tips into something rideable. The morning brings a 2ft groundswell from the West with a 10-second period and a light cross-off breeze from the NE at 3 mph. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 62°F, so it’ll be pleasant enough. The break is fairly consistent for beginners and fairly exposed to the WNW swell, but expect crowds to be often here. It’s not going to be pumping, but it'll be the best we’ve seen in two weeks.
After that, we drop back into small, weak surf for Tuesday the 21st of July and beyond, with a cross-onshore wind messing it up again. So, if you’re patient, Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are your best bets for a paddle. It’s not a legendary run, but after this dry spell, it’ll feel like a winner.
Rusty.
