The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this outlook for Putsborough is a tough one to write. Looking at the next 16 days, the honest truth is there’s no good surf to recommend. The entire window is a write-off with scores consistently at zero, so I’m not going to sugarcoat it.

The first suggestion of any surf comes on Saturday, August 22nd, but it’s a poor one. We’re looking at a tiny 1ft from the west with a weak combined swell energy of just 39. The wind is onshore from the NNW, and the water is a warm 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice dip for the body, but not for a wave. Nothing else clicks until we get into the following week.

The pattern shows a long gap of flat, poor conditions. From the 22nd through to the 27th of August, the swell stays tiny, under 1ft, and the wind is mostly cross-off or cross-on, but the lack of any real energy means it’s not worth a paddle. The combined energy values are all two-digit figures, well below 100, confirming just how weak it is.

On Thursday, August 27th, there’s a jump in the afternoon to 4ft from the southwest, period 8 seconds, and the combined energy hits 152 (moderate). But the wind is a cross-off from the south at 22 mph, and the surf description still says “poor surf conditions.” It’s just not happening.

Things lift a little on Friday, August 28th morning. The swell is 4ft from the WSW, period 9 seconds, with a combined energy of 276 (moderate). The wind is a gentle cross-off from the SSW, and the call is “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” That’s the closest we get to something rideable, but it’s still a long way from good. By the afternoon, the wind swings cross-on from the WNW at 25 mph and the whole thing falls apart.

From the 29th of August, the swell actually grows, but it’s messy. On the 29th morning, we see 6ft from the west with a period of just 7 seconds, and the combined energy is 328 (strong). That’s a lot of whitewater, but the wind is a strong cross-on from the west at 25 mph, making it blown out. The afternoon bumps to 7ft with 478 energy, but the wind is still cross-on at 22 mph. This is expert-only territory in size, and with that wind, it’s a washing machine. Honestly, for a beach setup like this, that’s more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.

The rest of the period into early September stays poor. The swell drops back to under 3ft, the wind is often cross-on or strong, and the combined energy stays low. Even on September 4th, when the energy bumps to 162 in the afternoon, the swell is only 3ft from the west with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is a moderate cross-on. It’s not enough.

To be blunt, this is a blank run. It’s not unusual for the area when the conditions don’t line up. The only small hope is that Friday morning, August 28th, offers a marginal window—but it’s not a standout. Don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can change, but as it sits, leave the board in the car.

Rusty.
