The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, this time in feet and knots.
First up, looks like we’re in for a frustrating run at Putsborough. The surf window starts off pretty quiet with barely a ripple. From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the following week, it’s mostly tiny, weak, and messy. We’re talking ankle-snatchers at best, with the swell energy struggling to break double digits most days. The wind is often howling, with strong easterlies making it clean but just not worth gearing up for.
Things finally show a glimmer of life on Monday the 31st of August. The morning brings a 3ft west swell with light winds from the SSE, making for clean conditions. The real standout is the afternoon session – the wind drops to glassy calm, with a 3ft west swell rolling in. The energy is still weak at 96, but clean, glassy surf on a small day is a rare treat worth paddling out for.
However, by Tuesday the 1st of September, the wind swings back onshore and messy, and we’re back to poor quality for a few days. Then, on Thursday the 3rd of September, we see a solid pulse. Morning brings a 5ft west swell with a light southerly giving clean conditions. The energy jumps to 236. This is the biggest clean swell of the whole outlook. It’s a bit on the bigger side for beginners, but not too wild for anyone with a bit of experience. Afternoon sees it bump to 6ft with a light west wind, still surfable but getting a little wind-affected.
After that, the forecast gets mixed again with building wind and choppy seas, and by the 6th and 7th of September, the swell gets big but gets hammered by strong winds making it a lumpy, messy affair. At 7ft with a messy cross-shore, that’s really only for the die-hard experts, or more likely a kite-surfing session than a clean paddle.
So, to sum it up: the best bets are the glassy afternoon on Monday the 31st for the small-wave crew, and the clean morning on Thursday the 3rd of September for a proper surf.
Rusty.
