The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for Putsborough, with barely a wave worth paddling for. If you’re a beginner just wanting to get wet, there might be a few moments, but for anyone chasing proper surf, you’re going to be waiting a long time.
We’ve got a major dry spell from now through the 25th of July, where the swell is tiny – mostly 0.3ft to 0.7ft. The combined energy is laughable, barely hitting double digits (4 to 10). The best you’ll see in that stretch is a brief moment on the morning of the 24th of July, when the wind goes glassy, but the swell is still a pathetic 0.7ft from the west with an 8-second period. It’s flat, it’s clean, but it’s flat.
Then, from the 26th of July, we finally see a lift. The swell builds to 3ft-4ft out of the west, with combined energy climbing into the moderate range (73 to 96). But here’s the kicker – the wind is on it. Strong cross-onshore winds from the WNW and W, gusting up to 19 mph, will have it chopped and lumpy. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’ll be weak and messy. Not the kind of surf you drive for.
The best bet in this whole outlook lands on the 28th of July. The morning shows a 3ft west swell with a 9-second period and combined energy of 128 – that’s the most power we see all window. The wind is onshore from the NW, but offshore (SE) is the direction you want at Putsborough. This is a beginner-friendly break, and with the swell just under 5ft, it’s still manageable. However, the onshore wind will make it a bumpy ride. Definitely not a standout.
The 31st of July morning offers a silver lining: a 2ft west swell, but with a clean cross-offshore wind from the east at 19 mph. The afternoon gets even better, with a 3ft west swell and a fresh offshore wind from the SE. The combined energy reads 71, and it’ll be clean. For a beginner break, this is the best-looking session in the forecast – but it’s still small.
For the rest of August, we’re back to small, choppy conditions with onshore winds. Water temperature is average for the time of year, so no worries there.
So, to sum it up: there’s no true standout. If you’re desperate, the 31st of July afternoon offers the cleanest conditions with a small, rideable wave. For everyone else, this is a good time to check the forecasts for a change.
Rusty.
