The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple for days. The first real surf that shows up isn’t until early on the morning of the 27th at Putsborough, but even then, it’s barely a pulse. The water is sitting at 66°F, which is much warmer than you'd expect for this time of year, so you might not need a full winter suit if you’re just staring at flat water.
From the 21st through the 26th, it’s basically a write-off. Tiny waves, poor conditions, and the wind is all over the place – mostly cross-on or onshore junk. The energy is weak, reading between 7 and 171 (combined energy), so don’t bother paddling out.
The morning of the 27th (Thursday) gives us a little glimmer at Putsborough. The wind goes glassy, which is great, and the swell is a weak 3 ft from the WSW with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is only 110, so it’s weak, but you’ll find a few surfable waves if you’re desperate. The wind is so light it’s almost still, so the surface will be clean. Still, it’s nothing to write home about. The afternoon gets messy again with cross-on wind.
We jump ahead to the 30th (Sunday) morning. The swell picks up a bit to 6 ft from the west, 8-second period, and the combined energy is 428 – moderate. The wind is cross-off from the SSW, which keeps it clean, but the swell is short-period and a little fat. It’s marginal, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a while. Still, not a standout.
Now, the real potential shows up on the 2nd of September. Wednesday morning brings a 8 ft WSW swell with a 9-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 897 – strong. The wind is cross-off from the east, so it’ll be clean. This is getting into expert territory, size-wise, but for a confident surfer, this could be the best of the run. The afternoon gets even bigger: 10 ft from the west, 9 seconds, and the energy is a massive 1485. The wind goes offshore from the ESE, making for clean, powerful waves. This is a big-groundswell type setup, and while it’s going to be heavy, it’s the true standout of the whole forecast. Just keep in mind, this is a long-range call, so it’s promising but not locked in.
The 3rd of September (Thursday) morning still has some size at 7 ft from the west, 9 seconds, and energy at 1355, with cross-off wind from the NE. It’s still solid, but the wind shifts during the afternoon, so the window is mostly the morning. By the 4th and 5th, the swell is still around 5 ft to 7 ft, but the wind turns onshore or cross-on, making it choppy and messy.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a window, the 2nd of September morning is the one to pencil in. It’s the biggest, cleanest, and most powerful swell we see. Just be ready for a lot of flat days before that.
Rusty.
