Right then, let me have a look at what we’ve got for the next couple of weeks here at Croyde. I’ve got to be straight with you, this is a tough run to call. The setup is stubborn, and we are in for a long stretch of very small, poor-quality surf. There’s no real stand-out session to get excited about, mostly just tiny waves and ordinary conditions.
For the first several days, starting today, Tuesday 7th July, we’re looking at a weak 2ft swell from the west with a period of 9 seconds, but the onshore wind from the west at 9 mph is mushing it out completely. The combined wave energy is a low 52, and it's just poor. That carries through Wednesday and Thursday with similar ankle-to-knee-high waves, barely any push, and cross-onshore winds making it choppy. It’s pretty flat, really.
Friday morning, 10th July, gives us a tiny glimmer. The swell sticks around 2ft from the west, still a 9-second period, and we get a clean offshore wind from the east-northeast at 9 mph. The energy is still weak at 56, but it’s the cleanest it’s going to be for a while. For a short window, it’s surfable. But it’s ordinary, not a classic.
Then, from Saturday the 11th all the way through to Monday the 20th of July, it just dies. The swell drops to less than 0.5ft for long stretches. We get some strong offshore winds, which will glass the surface up, but there’s simply no water to ride. The wave energy sinks into single figures and low doubles – 15, 19, 20 – the ocean is almost flat. On the 12th, the period hits 21 seconds, but with less than 0.5ft of height, it’s just a long-period bump with nothing behind it.
By Friday the 17th, there’s a tiny pulse, a 2ft swell from the west-southwest, but the period drops to a mere 4 seconds. That’s a super weak, short-period windswell with energy at 25. It’s not going to form a decent wave. The weekend and into the following week are more of the same tiny, weak conditions. The second week is a write-off.
If you really, truly need to get wet and don’t mind a scrappy session, the only real option is Friday morning, 10th July. The offshore wind will clean it up, but don’t expect much. For the rest of it, honestly, this looks more interesting for a kite surfer with the clean, flat water and strong breezes than for anyone on a paddleboard.
