The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. I’ve been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and I’ve got to be honest – it’s pretty grim out there for the foreseeable future. We’re looking at a long dry spell of tiny, weak surf that just doesn’t want to get its act together for a proper session.

The water’s feeling weirdly warm for this time of year – about 2° warmer than usual at 64°, so you won’t need a thick suit, but that’s about the only upside.

We start off Monday afternoon, July 13th, and it’s a total non-starter. Swell is a pathetic 0.3 ft from the SW, but with a 19 mph cross-offshore wind from the ENE, it’s just clean and flat. That’s the story for the next week and a half. The energy is almost non-existent – readings are all in the single digits or low twenties (24, 30, 40), which is barely a ripple. You’ll get a few days where the wind goes offshore, like Tuesday morning July 14th with a 19 mph easterly, or Wednesday morning July 15th with a 16 mph easterly, but it’s still on a 1 ft swell. Clean, sure, but you’d be surfing a lake.

From around Thursday July 24th, things start to look a bit more interesting, but it’s still not good. The swell finally bumps up to 4 ft to 4 ft by Friday July 24th, coming from the SW with a short period of 5 to 6 seconds. The wave energy finally climbs into three digits (83, 131), but the wind is a mess – onshore and cross-onshore from the SW and WSW at 16-19 mph. That’s choppy, lumpy, and poor quality. It’s a bit of a tease, honestly.

The standout, if you can call it that, is likely Saturday July 25th. The swell holds around 3 ft from the WSW, period still only 6-7 seconds, with moderate wave energy (120). The problem is the wind – it’s a fresh cross-onshore. That’s going to be a messy, bumpy ride, and it’s too small for the power to punch through. Not worth paddling out for.

To be brutally honest, there is nothing in the 16-day window worth getting excited about. The swell is tiny, the wind is all over the place, and the quality is consistently poor. If you’re desperate, you might get a couple of knee-high runners on a clean morning, but that’s it. The best advice is to leave the board in the car and save the energy for a better day. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a write-off.

Rusty.
