Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the outlook for Croyde.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – for the next couple of weeks, we’re looking at a proper flat spell. There’s really nothing on the cards worth paddling out for. The first decent suggestion doesn't roll around until Friday, the 10th of July, and even then it’s a "just about rideable" situation. We’ve got a long gap of practically nothing before that.
Through the early days of July, it’s all tiny, weak swell. Monday morning the 6th you’re looking at a meagre 2 ft from the west, with a cross-onshore wind from the WSW at 9 mph messing it up. Combined swell energy is a weak 61, and it’s just poor conditions. This same story pretty much runs right through until Thursday the 9th – tiny waves, weak energy, and winds that are either onshore or cross-onshore. There's a moment on Wednesday morning, the 8th, and again on Thursday morning the 9th, where it goes glassy with that NW breeze dropping to just 3 mph, but there’s only 1 ft of swell to work with. It’s clean, but it’s barely a ripple.
Friday morning, the 10th of July, is the first time we see a little hope. The swell pops to 2 ft from the west, period at 9 seconds, and we get a clean 12 mph offshore from the ENE. The combined energy is still low at 58, but the conditions are clean. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. By the afternoon, that offshore swings to a lighter cross-off from the NE at 3 mph, and it cleans up even more – same tiny 2 ft west swell.
The following days through to the 17th swing between tiny, weak swell and stronger offshore winds that just flatten things out completely. We get some really long-period stuff showing up on the 12th and 13th of July – periods of 16 to 21 seconds – but the swell height is only 0.3 ft! Combined energy is in the teens. It’s all show and no go.
Finally, on Friday the 17th of July morning, we get a tiny spike: 2 ft from the southwest at a short 6-second period, with a light cross-off breeze from the ENE at 6 mph. Combined energy is 42. It's surfable but very ordinary.
Then, late in the period, we see a real shift. Tuesday the 21st of July morning, a NW swell comes in at 5 ft with a 6-second period. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 195. Winds are cross-off from the NNE at 12 mph, keeping it clean. Now, that 5 ft is a touch big for beginners, but for the more experienced lot, this is the standout of the entire forecast. It’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it, but right now that’s the one that’s got my attention. The afternoon sees it drop to 4 ft from the NW, but winds go cross-shore from the NNW at 16 mph, making it a bit choppy and messy. Still, that morning window from the 21st of July is the best we’re going to get.
So, to sum it up: a very quiet stretch with a few clean, tiny windows, but the real date to pencil in is Tuesday the 21st of July for a proper clean, 5 ft NW swell.
Rusty.
