Right then, let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Croyde over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough one to call. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty flat, with only a few tiny windows of small, rideable waves, but nothing that’s going to get the heart pumping. There’s a real gap here after the first morning, with a long stretch of nothing worth paddling out for.
The only real standout, and I mean the *only* one, is Thursday morning, July 9th. The water’s a balmy 63°, which is a good bit warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a decent bonus. We’ve got a tiny 2ft westerly swell rolling in, with a 10-second period. The wave energy is weak (45), but the real story is the wind. It’s glassy, dead calm from the NNW. That means the waves will be clean as a whistle. It’s not going to be big, but for a morning cruise on a longboard, it’s your best bet by a long shot. The break is very consistent, so you’ll find something to ride, but be aware it can get crowded here.
After that morning, it goes downhill fast. Friday morning, July 10th, has a slightly better 2ft swell with a clean offshore wind from the east, but it’s still tiny. Then from Saturday, July 11th, right through to the end of the month, it’s a desert. The swell drops to 0.3ft or 1ft for days on end, with a loooong stretch of nothing. The winds turn onshore, cross-onshore, or just get too strong, making it choppy and messy. Even when the swell tries to pick up to 3ft on Friday, July 17th, it’s a short-period, wind-affected mess. The setup is a beach, so with that chop and wind, it’s looking more interesting for a kite surfer than anyone on a paddle board.
Basically, if you are desperate for a surf, get out on Thursday morning, July 9th. After that, it’s a long wait. The forecasts might change, but right now, it’s a blank run.
