The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a long stretch ahead, but I’m not gonna lie to you – it’s a rough start. The first solid week or so is a write-off for any proper surf. You’ll be lucky to find a dribble. We’re looking at a real dry spell from now until the end of July, with nothing but tiny, weak swell and poor conditions.
The first hint of something worth paddling out for shows up on the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. Even then, it’s pretty marginal. The real shift, the one that’s got my heart racing a little, is on the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July. That’s our standout.
Croyde is the only game in town, and it’s exposed to the west. For that Wednesday morning, we’re looking at a solid 6ft swell rolling in from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 472 (moderate), so there’s some grunt behind it. The wind is light, coming from the north-northwest, giving us a slight cross-shore breeze. It’s not perfectly clean, but it’s the best looking window we’ve got. The swell is getting big enough to be a handful for beginners, but for the intermediate crew, this is the one to circle. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a bonus.
The afternoon of the 29th gets a bit messy with a cross-onshore wind, so get on it early. The start of the month, the 30th, has a bit of leftover swell but the wind is on it, making it choppy and not really worth the effort.
So, to sum it up: the first week and a half is a total write-off. Don’t bother. The only window to get excited about is the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July. It’s a promising, solid swell with light wind. Get the wax on and be ready.
