The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
We're in for a bit of a flat spell to start, so don't be in a rush to grab your board. The first proper surfable option won't show up until Saturday morning the 22nd, and even then it's pretty small. The pattern is mostly dominated by onshore winds and a lot of poor conditions, with a couple of glimmers towards the end of the month.
The standout session, the one that's got my attention, is looking like Monday morning, the 31st of August. The water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that's noticeably warm, so you might not need a thick wetsuit. The swell is coming from the west at 4 ft, with a period of 7 seconds. The wind will be a light SSE breeze, making it cross-offshore and clean. The combined wave energy will be moderate (283). Conditions are expected to be good surf, so that's the one to circle on the calendar. For a break like Croyde, which is exposed to the WSW, the west swell is a decent direction.
Now, before that, there's a long stretch of pretty ordinary stuff. The best of the rest is a tiny window on Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. We get a tiny 1 ft west swell with a 10-second period, but the wind is a clean offshore from the ENE. The energy is weak (47). It's surfable, but only just.
The rest of the forecast is a lot of wind-ruined surf, with the wind mostly from the W or NW, making for choppy, lumpy conditions. There's a pulse of 6 ft swell on the 20th, but it's got a cross-on westerly wind, so it's a messy one. From the 23rd through the 29th, it's all small, weak, and generally poor, with only a few clean but tiny windows.
After the 31st August standout, the surf drops off again into the first week of September. The 1st and 2nd see some 5 ft to 6 ft swell, but it's all cross-on or onshore again, so expect chop. The 3rd of September brings a bit more size with a 4 ft WSW swell, but the wind is cross-shore, so it's not going to be clean.
The bottom line: If you've got the patience, wait for Monday morning, the 31st of August. That's your best bet. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
