The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the forecast for Croyde.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with ya – the next week and a bit is looking pretty grim. We’re talking a solid 9 days of poor surf conditions from the 17th right through to the 25th of July. The swell is just tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and the wind is all over the place, mostly cross-onshore or choppy. It’s one of those stretches where you’re better off waxing your board and just waiting.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Sunday, 26th July. We’ve got a clean 3 ft swell from the west with a 6-second period, and a moderate offshore breeze from the east. The energy is weak, only 49 (units), but it’s clean and surfable. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s a start.
Things get a bit more interesting on Monday, 27th July. The swell picks up to 5 ft from the west, with the energy jumping to 184 (units). But the wind swings to a cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. It’s a frustrating one – the size is there, but the wind is just ruining it.
Now, the real standout – and I mean *the* standout – is Wednesday, 29th July. The afternoon sees a solid 12 ft swell from the west, with a period of 9 seconds. The energy is massive, hitting 1809 (units). This is a big, powerful groundswell. But here’s the catch – the guidance tells me the wind and tide are favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert-only territory here. If you’re a seasoned local who knows the rip, it could be a proper session, but for anyone else, it’s a day to watch from the cliff.
Thursday, 30th July, is similar. The morning holds an 12 ft west swell (9 seconds, 2281 energy) with a clean cross-off wind from the east-northeast. Again, the model says it’s too big for the break. Same story in the afternoon with a 10 ft swell. This is heavy, powerful stuff – only for the guys with serious experience.
By Friday, 31st July, the swell starts to back off a bit. The morning brings a 7 ft swell from the west-northwest with a 7-second period and a clean offshore east-northeast wind. The energy is still strong at 420. This is a proper surfable day, with good conditions, but it's still a solid size. The afternoon drops to 6 ft, still clean, and a good option for the intermediate crew.
The 1st of August sees the run end, with the swell dropping back to 3 ft and the wind turning onshore again. So, to sum it up – the first week is a write-off. The last few days of July and into August are where it’s at. The best on offer is the 31st of July morning for a good, clean, solid session. The 29th and 30th are for the big-wave chargers only.
Rusty.
