The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Croyde over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple for days. The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until the morning of Monday the 27th of July, and even then, it’s a battle. The water’s sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 64°F, which is nice, but it doesn’t help the waves.
For the first ten days, from Friday the 17th right through to Sunday the 26th, it’s pretty much a write-off. We’re talking flat spells and tiny, weak swells with combined energy barely hitting double digits (14, 20, 2, 8... you get the picture). The wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, chopping up whatever little bump there is. There’s a couple of clean-looking mornings on the 20th and 21st, but with swell heights of 0.7ft, you’d be better off taking a swim. It’s just not happening.
Then, finally, on Monday the 27th of July, we get a pulse of energy. The morning sees a 6ft swell from the west, with a 7-second period. The combined energy jumps to a solid 338 – that’s moderate and getting interesting. The problem? It’s blowing 12 mph from the WNW, cross-on, making it choppy and lumpy. It’s not clean, but it’s the biggest surf we’ve seen all forecast. This swell carries through the afternoon (6ft, energy 321) and into Tuesday the 28th (5ft, energy 206), but the wind stays messy – cross-on or onshore, up to 19 mph. For a more experienced surfer who doesn’t mind a fight, this is the best on offer, but it’s not a classic Croyde day.
After that pulse, it fades fast. Wednesday the 29th drops to 2ft, and by Thursday the 30th we’re back to tiny, weak stuff. The combined energy on the 30th is down to 29. There’s a little bump on the 1st of August – 4ft from the west with 127 energy – but again, that fresh cross-on wind kills the quality.
So, the standout window? It’s that Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell is there, the size is there, but the wind is a real letdown. If you’re desperate for a paddle, you’ll get waves, but don’t expect perfection. For the rest of the run, it’s pretty grim. The setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those windy, lumpy days.
Stay patient, lads. It’ll turn.
Rusty.
