The Lowdown
Right then, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Croyde over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough one. We're lookin' at a proper dry spell for a long while.
The water's sitting at a balmy 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus if you're just having a dip, but for the waves? Not much to write home about.
For the next 15 days, from the 16th of July right through to the 30th, the surf is practically non-existent. We're seeing tiny lumps of swell, mostly under 1 foot, with next to no energy behind them – a combined swell energy of just 22 or less on most days. That's basically flat. The winds are a real mixed bag too, often cross-shore or onshore, which just messes up any chance of a clean face. There's a glimpse of a cleaner, offshore wind on the morning of the 21st, but with a 0.7 ft swell, you'd be better off with a bodyboard. This is a proper stretch of poor surf.
Now, hang in there, because there’s a glimmer of hope right at the very end. On the morning of Friday, the 31st of July, things finally wake up. A clean 3 ft swell from the WSW is pushing in, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined swell energy climbs to a moderate 128, so there's some life in the water. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it won't be too chopped up. It's not a world-class day, but after that long, brutal lull, those little waist-high waves will feel like a goldmine. The afternoon gets messy again with a cross-onshore breeze, so be on it for that morning session.
So, the standout here, and really the only game in town, is that Friday the 31st. For a place like Croyde, which is very consistent, this is an unusually long blank run. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, don't hold your breath until that last day of July.
Rusty.
