Table - best surf conditions forecast for Croyde over the next 16 days.
Alright, let's get into it. The next week and a bit is pretty quiet for Croyde, but there's a little window of opportunity if you know when to look.
We’ve got a classic setup here: a super consistent, exposed beach break that’s waiting for the right combination of swell and wind. The trouble is, for most of this 16-day run, the swell is just too small and the wind is either onshore or too strong. There’s a gap from the start, with nothing really worth paddling out for through the first few days.
The best of it all looks like Friday morning, the 10th of July. That’s where everything lines up. We’re looking at a clean 2ft wave from the west, with a 9-second period. The wind is offshore from the ENE, blowing at 9 mph, meaning the faces will be smooth and the lineups will be holding their shape. The combined wave energy is moderate (78), so there’s enough push to get you into a couple of fun ones. For a beach break, this is a proper standout. The crowd situation at Croyde can be “often” busy, so expect company, but the quality of the surf will be worth it.
Following that, Saturday morning the 11th of July is still okay. You’ll get a similar 2ft swell from the west with a shorter 8-second period, but the wind is a bit stronger at 16 mph from the east. It’ll be clean, but the wind is pushing harder, making it a little more work.
After that, it’s a long, quiet stretch. We’re looking at several days where the swell drops to 0.3ft or 0.7ft, sometimes with a very long period, but the combined energy is weak (in the teens to low 30s). The wind is strong offshore, making it hard to paddle into those tiny waves. This is a real dry spell. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
The next slightly interesting point is Saturday morning the 18th of July. The swell picks up to 1ft from the west, with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light NNE cross-off. The energy is still weak (42), but the conditions are clean. It’s a small improvement, but not a day to get excited about.
Then, right at the very end of the forecast, on Friday morning the 24th of July, we see a jump in the swell to 5ft from the WNW. The period is short at 6 seconds, and the wind is light onshore from the west. The combined energy hits 143 (moderate), so there’s more water moving. But the “poor surf conditions” tag and the onshore wind mean it’s likely to be lumpy and messy. For a beach break, that setup might be more interesting for the kite surfers than the paddle crew.
So, to wrap it up: set your alarm for the morning of the 10th of July. That’s your best shot. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
