The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight – this is a tough one. Croyde is a great wave when it’s on, and the guidance tells me it’s a very consistent spot that can handle a good WSW swell. But the 16‑day forecast? There’s nothing worth paddling out for. Every single session from Friday 17th July right through to Saturday 1st August comes back as “poor surf conditions” with a score of zero. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – about 64°F with a 3°F anomaly – but that’s not gonna help the surf.
We start with Friday morning 17th: a tiny 0.7ft from the west, period 8 seconds, combined energy just 9 – barely a ripple. A light NNW cross breeze messes it up. Friday afternoon drops to 0.3ft, onshore choppy junk. Saturday 18th morning sees a little 2ft NNW windswell, period only 4 seconds, energy 23, but cross‑off wind keeps it clean? Actually the comment says “poor surf conditions” and score 0, so don’t get excited. By Saturday afternoon it’s 3ft but with a fresh cross‑onshore 19 mph from the NNW – lumpy and horrible.
Sunday 19th through to Tuesday 21st: morning sessions have clean offshore winds (ENE, E, N) but the swell is barely 0.3ft to 0.7ft, period 7‑10 seconds, combined energy in the single digits – you’d be bobbing on a lake. Afternoons are cross‑onshore choppy messes. Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd bump up to 3‑3ft but with strong NNW winds, energy only 34‑40, and lumpy conditions. Friday 24th is glassy – zero wind – but only 0.3ft of long‑period 13‑second groundswell from the SW, energy 12. That’s a tease.
The second week gets worse. Saturday 25th has a glassy morning but 0.3ft. Sunday 26th brings moderate rain and a 19 mph SSW cross wind, still 0.3ft. Monday 27th through Wednesday 29th: onshore winds 16‑25 mph, swell slowly climbs from 0.7ft to 2ft, periods 5‑10 seconds, energy up to 71 by Wednesday afternoon – but it’s all onshore, rainy, and the wave comment is “poor surf conditions” every time. Thursday 30th morning has a brief clean offshore ENE at 9 mph with 1ft WSW swell, period 9 seconds, energy 28 – the best window in the whole run, but still too small to be a real option. Afternoon goes back onshore. Friday 31st and Saturday 1st August: tiny swell, onshore or cross‑onshore wind, nothing rideable.
So the truth is, for the next 16 days there are no good surf options at Croyde. The spot is very consistent normally, but this time the ocean just isn’t cooperating. Don’t bother packing your board – maybe go for a run or a pint instead. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s a blank run.
Rusty.
