Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right then, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us.
To be brutally honest, this is a lean stretch. We’re looking at a long gap right from the start. The first real nod we get, and it’s a weak one, doesn't come until Thursday, July 9th. Before that, it’s pretty much flat with onshore winds. That’s nearly three days of nothing doing.
Thursday, July 9th finally gives us a little pulse. The waves are tiny, just about 2ft from the West, with a period of 10 seconds, which gives it a bit of shape. The combined energy is weak (45) which tells the story. The highlight here is an early morning window with glassy winds from the WNW at just 3 mph. That’s clean as a whistle, but you’ll be paddling around for knee-high waves that are “very ordinary.” It’s beginner territory at best.
Friday, July 10th is a slight step up. We’re still looking at the same small swell (2ft, WSW), but the morning has a cross-offshore breeze from the ENE at 9 mph, which will tidy things up nicely. The combined energy is still weak (56). For Croyde, with the swell from the optimum WSW direction and that clean morning wind, this is likely the best combination of the whole 16 days. It won’t be pumping, but it’s your best chance for a clean, rideable wave. Expect crowds, as the beach is “often” busy.
After that, the week runs dry again. From Saturday, July 11th right through to Saturday, July 18th, it’s a long stretch of tiny, weak swell. The winds are mostly offshore, which is great, but with swell under 1ft and combined energy dropping as low as 8, you’d be surfing ripples. There’s a long period swell showing up from the 12th to the 14th (periods of 16 to 21 seconds), but with a height of just 0.3ft it’s pure flatness. For Croyde, a long-period groundswell that small just won’t show.
The next potential window opens on Sunday, July 19th into Monday, July 20th. We see the swell energy creeping back up to moderate levels (59 to 93). The swell stays small, around 1ft to 2ft, but the direction is WSW, and the period is a solid 12 to 13 seconds. That’s a nice, clean groundswell. The winds on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning look clean with cross-offshore and light conditions. It might produce a few waist-high lines at the point, but it’s still nothing to get overly excited about. Given the long wait, it’s worth a look, but treat this second week pick as promising, not a certainty.
The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 62°F with a anomaly of 3°F. Not a wetsuit buster, but a solid summer spring suit temp.
Stay patient, lads. It’s one of those runs.
Rusty.
