The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Croyde over the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s a pretty grim run of conditions for the most part. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak waves mixed with bad wind directions. It’s not looking like we’ll get any proper surf for a good while. The first real sign of something with a bit of push shows up on Saturday, July 25th, with a solid 6ft swell from the west, but it’s coming in with a moderate cross-onshore wind that’s going to chop it up. The combined energy hits 277, which is a moderate amount of power, but the onshore wind will ruin the shape. It’s a messy, blown-out prospect for more experienced surfers only, and the 6ft height will be too much for beginners. Sunday, July 26th, drops back down to 3ft, still with onshore winds, so nothing to get excited about.
The real frustration is the lack of clean, rideable waves. Even when the wind does go offshore, like on the 21st July morning, the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft. There’s a patch of glassy conditions on the 29th and 30th of July, but again, the swell is tiny, under 2ft.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a session, the best chance of getting something half-decent is on the morning of Wednesday, July 29th. It’s a 3ft swell from the west, with a light cross-onshore breeze, but it’s a bit lumpy. The afternoon that day is glassy, but the swell drops to 2ft. It’s not going to be a classic, but it’s the only time the wind is truly light and the water is flat. The crowd factor at Croyde is often high, so don’t expect it to be quiet.
The water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a thick suit.
For the rest of the period, it’s a write-off. There’s a tiny, clean 0.7ft swell on the 31st of July morning with a fresh offshore breeze, but it’s just not enough to surf. The same goes for the first few days of August. It’s a long, flat, and frustrating outlook for Croyde.
