The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Croyde. Straight up, I’m looking at a pretty grim picture for the next couple of weeks. The water is sitting at 64° which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but you’re not going to be feeling much of it from the beach, because there’s barely a wave to be had.
For the first eleven days, we’re looking at a total write-off. From Thursday the 16th of July through to Sunday the 27th, the surf is just poor. Swell heights are tiny, mostly below 2 ft, and the wind is a mess – cross-on, onshore, and often strong. There’s a few short windows of clean conditions, like Saturday morning the 18th with a cross-off wind, but the swell is still next to nothing at 2 ft. The combined wave energy barely cracks 25 (25) most of the time, so we’re talking about flat, bumpy, or just plain messy water. Not worth paddling out for.
The run of poor conditions continues for a solid stretch. We get a slight glimmer of hope on Tuesday the 28th of July. That morning, the wind finally goes glassy, dead calm, and the swell is 3 ft from the WSW. The score says it’s “surfable but very ordinary,” and honestly, that’s a fair call. It’s the only thing that’s even close to rideable in the whole run. The energy is still weak at 70 (70), so it’s not going to be a classic, but if you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window.
After that, it’s back to the same old story. Wednesday the 29th sees a bit more size – 4 ft – but it’s straight onshore at 16 mph, making it choppy and ugly. The energy pushes up to 115 (115), but with that wind, it’s just a mess. The final days of the run into the end of July are more of the same: cross and onshore winds, wonky periods, and poor surf.
Overall, there’s no standout here. The only real option is the glassy morning on the 28th, and even that’s pretty ordinary. If you’re in Croyde for a surf trip, I’d be looking at a different holiday.
Rusty.
