The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next couple of weeks for Croyde.
To be honest, mate, it’s a tough stretch. The forecast is a bit of a heartbreaker. We’ve got a 16-day window, but the first solid week or so is a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. The wind is just relentless from the west, blowing straight onshore, and it’s turning the swell into a complete mess. There’s a bit of energy out there, but the quality is just not there. It feels like a long wait.
The first real sign of life comes on the morning of Thursday the 21st of August. There’s a brief window with a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the east-northeast (ENE) at 9 mph. The waves are small, only 2 ft out of the west, but the wind is off. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. The combined energy is weak at 90. It’s a tiny window of hope, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
After that, it’s back to rubbish for days. Gaps of nothing but onshore junk. The water is a bit of a story here, though. When we do get a chance, the water temp is around 66°, which is a solid 4° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a nice surprise, but it can’t fix the wind.
The best chance we get is looking like the morning of Wednesday the 27th of August. The wind swings offshore from the east-southeast (ESE) at 12 mph, and we’ve got a 3 ft swell from the west-southwest. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell, but it’s clean. The combined energy is moderate at 125. It’s still not a classic Croyde day, but it’s the cleanest we’ll see. Expect crowds here, as it’s often busy, and this might be the only session that’s worth a look.
Later in the period, around the 29th of August, the swell size picks up to 6 ft, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the west-northwest. That’s a lumpy, messy wave. The energy is high (397), but the quality is poor. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than anything for a traditional surfer. The same goes for the 1st of September, with a 6 ft west-southwest swell and a moderate cross-onshore breeze. It’s just not good.
Look, if you’re desperate, keep an eye on the 27th of August morning. That’s the only real standout, and it’s a small one. For the rest, it’s a waiting game. The surf will come back, but it’s not going to be pretty for a while.
Rusty.
