The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's break down what's coming our way.
So, the next couple of weeks at Croyde are looking pretty quiet for the most part. We're starting off with almost nothing and it's really a waiting game for anything that's worth paddling out for. The water temp is 66°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year—that's a nice bonus.
Saturday 22nd August morning we've got a tiny 1ft swell from the WSW. The wave energy is weak (56) and the period is short, so it's not doing much. It's clean with a light cross-offshore from the NE, but it's very ordinary. The afternoon goes onshore and gets choppy.
Sunday 23rd August the swell drops even more to 0.7ft. The morning has a clean offshore from the ENE but the energy is next to nothing (34). Forget it.
Monday 24th August through Tuesday 25th August stay tiny—0.3ft to 1ft. Even with clean offshore winds from the E and ESE, there's just no swell to work with. The energy is pitiful (15 to 32).
Wednesday 26th August we get a small bump to 1ft from the W, but the period is a super short 8 seconds. The morning is clean with a cross-off, and the afternoon goes glassy (WNW, 5 mph), which is nice to see, but it's still far too small.
Now, Thursday 27th August the swell builds but the wind ruins it. 4ft to 4ft from the SW, with moderate to fresh cross-shore winds from the S and SSW. The wave energy is moderate (155 to 145) but it's messy and choppy. A pass.
Friday 28th August is where it gets proper, but not for paddle surfing. The swell jumps to 7ft in the morning and 8ft in the afternoon from the W. That's a solid, powerful swell with strong energy (508 to 699). But the wind is cross-onshore then onshore (WNW, 12 mph). With that size and a short period (7-8 seconds) at a beach break, it's going to be a washing machine. This setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It's only for experts, and even then, the conditions are poor.
Saturday 29th August the swell drops from 7ft to 5ft, but it's still all onshore from the WSW to W, 15-18 mph. Choppy and blown out.
From Sunday 30th August right through to Saturday 5th September, the swell backs off again, never getting above 4ft and often much smaller. The wave energy is mostly weak (45 to 232). There are a couple of windows of clean conditions, like the morning of Thursday 3rd September with 4ft from the W and a cross-off from the ENE (energy 232), and the afternoon of the same day looking the best with 4ft from the W and a light cross-off (energy 248, score 2/10). That Thursday afternoon is probably the closest we get to a decent session—clean, manageable size, but still underwhelming.
Friday 4th September and Saturday 5th September are back to small and uninspiring.
Sunday 6th September we end with barely a ripple—2ft dropping to 1ft and onshore winds. Time to clean the board.
So, the real standout is hard to find. If I had to pick one, it's Thursday 3rd September afternoon at Croyde. It's the only time we get clean, light winds with a 4ft swell from the W, a 7-second period, and moderate energy (248). It's not firing, but it's the best we've got. Don't expect crowds to be an issue.
It's a lean stretch, but it'll come good again.
Rusty.
