The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here, looking over the Croyde charts for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak stretch for Croyde. We’re looking at a real dry spell with very little on offer, and when there is some swell, the wind is going to be a nightmare. The first real bump of energy doesn’t show up until the 20th of August with a 6ft swell from the west, but a 30 km/h onshore WNW wind is going to rip it to shreds. The water is feeling much warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 66°F, a solid 4°F above average, which is a notable anomaly.
The following days are all pretty grim. We’ve got a long gap of poor conditions. The morning of the 22nd of August has a tiny 1ft swell from the WSW with a 10-second period, coupled with a clean, cross-offshore ENE breeze at 15 km/h. The combined energy is weak (59). It’s barely surfable. It’s only a 1 out of 10. That’s the best we’ve got for a while, but it’s not a standout by any means.
Things get a bit more interesting towards the end of the month. On the 29th of August, an 8ft swell from the west rolls in, which is serious size, but it’s going to be a messy, choppy mess with strong cross-onshore winds. That’s expert territory and not much fun. By the 3rd of September, we see a 7ft swell from the WSW, but it’s blown out by a 50 km/h near-gale cross-onshore wind. The combined energy is strong at 572, but it’s a write-off for paddle surfing.
There’s a glimmer on the 4th of September. The Friday morning shows a 4ft swell from the west with an 8-second period and a clean, gentle cross-shore breeze from the NNW. The combined energy is moderate (242). It’s only a marginal call, but it’s the most promising window in the entire forecast, especially after all the wind and junk. For a break that’s very consistent, this run of poor surf is a real shame.
The rest of the forecast is a flat, windy, or rainy mess. There’s simply nothing else worth paddling out for.
Signing off, Rusty.
