The Lowdown

Right then, let's get stuck into the Croyde forecast for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it’s a grim start and a long, painful wait for anything that’s actually worth paddling out for. We’re looking at a solid week or more of nothing to get excited about. The whole first week is a write-off, from now right through until the end of August. The swell is tiny, the wind is often howling, and when there is a little bump, the conditions are just poor. It's a proper flat spell.

Finally, around Friday the 28th of August, there’s a flicker of life. Friday morning at Croyde sees a bit of a lift, with some 4ft swell from the SW, and a clean cross-off breeze from the NE. The wave energy is moderate (232) so there's a bit of push, but the period is short at 9 seconds. It's surfable, but don’t expect perfection. By the afternoon, it gets blown out with a strong onshore wind.

Saturday the 29th is a no-go; the swell jumps up to over 7ft but it’s getting smashed by fresh to strong onshore winds. It’s messy and blown-out. Sunday the 30th is much the same, but with the wind dropping a touch. It's still onshore and lumpy.

The real standout, and I mean the only time in this whole forecast I’d be rushing for the car, is Monday the 31st of August. The morning session sees a light, cross-off breeze from the SSE keeping things clean, with a 4ft swell from the W. The energy is a modest 124, but it’s clean. The real magic, however, is the afternoon. The wind goes completely glassy – zero knots from the NE – with a clean 3ft swell from the WSW. This will be smooth as silk, perfect for logging or just a cruisy session. The crowds at Croyde are *often* an issue, and on a glassy afternoon like that, you can bet the lineup will be busy. It’s your best shot by a long way.

From there, it’s back to the doldrums. Tuesday the 1st of September sees a fresh cross-shore wind wrecking things, and it stays small and poor right through the first week of September. There is a marginal swell pulse on the 3rd of September with 6ft to 7ft, but it’s either cross-shore or onshore, and not worth the gamble.

For the second week, the pattern looks poor. There's a lot of onshore wind forecast, especially around the 6th and 7th of September, with some solid 8ft to 8ft swell from the W, but it's getting hammered by strong winds. It's not paddle-surfable; more of a kite-surfing setup if anything.

So, to sum it up: you've got a week of nothing, one absolute gem of a glassy session on the afternoon of Monday the 31st of August, and then more wind and mess after that. Make the most of that one window.

Rusty.
