Table - best surf conditions forecast for Croyde over the next 16 days.
Alright, I’m looking out over Croyde, and I’ve sifted through the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you – this is a grim run. There’s a dry patch right from the start, and it’s going to last a good long while. Honestly, we’re looking at a gap of almost a full two weeks before anything even registers as surfable, and even that is a stretch.
Right now, through the early days of July, there’s just nothing happening. Tiny, weak waves and the wind is mostly on it or cross-on. The water temp is sitting at 62°F, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, but you won’t care about that because you won’t be in the water. The combined swell energy is pathetically weak, with values barely hitting 47 (weak energy) on the best of these poor days. It’s just flat.
We get a tiny window on Friday morning, July 10th. We’ve got a 2-foot swell from the west, period of 9 seconds, and the wind swings easterly, going offshore at 9 mph. That will clean it up. But the surface is labelled as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – it’s a 1 out of 10 at best. The combined energy is just 56 (still weak energy). It’s a dribbler. Don’t get excited.
After that Friday morning, it’s back to the doldrums. The wind goes howling offshore for days after, but the swell drops to nearly nothing – 0.3 feet to 1 foot – with long-period energy that looks big on the chart (over 15 seconds) but produces no rideable wave. The combined energy numbers are in the teens and twenties (very weak energy). You’ll be paddling against a 28 mph offshore breeze and getting nowhere. That’s not surfing; that’s a workout.
Eventually, on Wednesday, July 22nd, we see a pulse. Swell height jumps to 5 feet from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy finally has some weight at 264 (moderate wave energy). But here’s the kicker: the wind is howling onshore at 19 mph from the west, and there’s rain. The data calls it “poor surf conditions.” It’s going to be a messy, blown-out wall of whitewater. That size, with that onshore wind, at Croyde? It’ll be a lumpy, bumpy mess, more suited for a bodyboard or even a kite if you’re into that. For a paddle surfer, it’s a day to sit out.
So, the honest truth? There are no standouts here. Not one. The only day that could be called the “best on offer” is that Friday morning (July 10th) with the tiny 2-foot clean waves, but even then, you’re scratching for a waist-high closeout. Don’t hold your breath. The forecasts can always change, but as it stands, this is a blank run.
Rusty.
