The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty here. Honestly, it's a real tough run on the books for the next couple of weeks. Croyde is the only spot on the radar, and it's looking like a long stretch of flat, weak conditions before we see any real energy.
Right now, through the 14th of July and all the way through to the 25th, we're staring at a proper drought. The swell is tiny, often just a few inches, and the combined energy is barely registering, with numbers like 30 in the morning and dropping to single digits later. There's a glimmer of clean conditions with the wind going offshore from the east at times, like Tuesday morning with 30 km/h offshore, but with a swell of 0.3 ft and a 18-second period, it's not going to produce anything worth paddling for. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
We do get a bit of a pulse kicking in from the 26th of July. Sunday morning the swell picks up to 3 ft from the west, with a combined energy of 127 (moderate energy), but it's got a cross-onshore wind from the WNW at 20 km/h, making it choppy. Sunday afternoon pushes to 4 ft from the WSW, but a fresh onshore wind of 30 km/h from the west will blow it out. The swell direction is WSW, which is the optimum for Croyde's exposed setup, but the quality is poor.
Now, the 27th of July is where things get a bit more interesting, but it's not for the faint-hearted. Monday morning has a 6 ft west swell, with a short period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 377 (strong energy). The wind is cross-onshore from the WSW at 20 km/h, so it'll be lumpy and messy. This swell is pushing into the 5 ft-8 ft range, so it's getting too big for beginners, and the short period means it'll be a bit of a close-out at the beach. Monday afternoon is similar, with the same 6 ft swell and a bit more wind. The setup is a beach break, so with the strong wind and significant swell, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The 28th of July brings light rain and a fresh 35 km/h cross-onshore wind from the SSW, with a 4 ft west swell. The energy is moderate (186), but the conditions are lumpy. The 29th of July is the standout in the whole forecast, but it's a long way out. Wednesday morning has a 7 ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 536 (very strong energy). The wind is cross-onshore from the SW at 30 km/h, which is a fresh breeze. This is a proper swell, but it's over 8 ft, so it's only for experts, and the short period and cross-onshore wind will make it a wild, challenging session. It's a promising but less certain call since it's two weeks out.
So, to be honest, there's no real standout here. The 29th of July has the biggest swell, but the conditions are far from perfect. If you're an expert and you're desperate, you might find something to charge on that last day, but don't get your hopes up. The rest of the month is a write-off. Keep an eye on the forecasts, though—it tends not to stay poor for long.
Rusty.
