The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Croyde is a tough one to swallow. There’s a whole lot of nothing happening for the first week. The forecast is stubbornly flat, with tiny swell and onshore winds messing things up. We’re looking at a gap of about six days before anything even starts to look like a surfable wave, and even then, it’s a bit of a stretch.
Let’s get into it. For the first few days, from Sunday the 19th through to Friday the 24th, you’re looking at ankle-slappers. Seriously, we’re talking swell heights of 0.33 ft to 0.66 ft. The combined energy is pathetic, barely registering (3 to 12). The wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the wave comment is “poor surf conditions.” Not worth getting wet for.
Saturday the 25th and the first half of Sunday the 26th are still terrible. The swell is still tiny, and the wind is howling onshore. The combined energy is still low (7 to 85). Sunday afternoon the 26th shows a bit of a pulse, with a 5 ft swell from the WSW, but with a 30 km/h onshore wind, it’s going to be a messy, blown-out mess. The combined energy finally climbs into the three-digit range (124), but with that wind, it’s a no-go for a paddle. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Now, Monday the 27th into Tuesday the 28th, we start to see a little more life. Monday morning has a 3 ft W swell, but still cross-onshore winds. The real standout in this whole run is Tuesday morning, July 28th. The swell is a modest 3 ft from the W, but the period jumps to 9 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. The wind is a gentle breeze from the NW, making it a cross-onshore, but it’s described as “gentle cross-onshore and fairly choppy.” The combined energy is the best we’ve seen at 148. It’s not perfect, but it's the most promising session in this whole outlook. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
After that, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th drop right back off, with tiny 1.0 ft to 2 ft swell and onshore winds. The energy levels are back in the low double digits (18 to 33).
Then, on Friday the 31st of July, we get a brief flicker of hope. The morning has a fresh offshore wind from the ESE at 30 km/h, blowing straight off the land. The swell is a weak 2 ft with a 6-second period, but that offshore wind will make it look clean. The afternoon has a 4 ft W swell, still with a clean cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is 87. It’s a window of clean conditions, but the swell is still small.
The first weekend of August is a write-off again. Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd are all onshore and windy, with building winds up to 40 km/h on Sunday. The swell is there (2 ft to 3 ft), but the conditions will be rough and messy. The combined energy is moderate (57 to 99). Monday the 3rd looks similar – more cross-onshore chop.
So, overall, we’ve got a long flat spell, a brief window of hope on the 28th, and a small, clean opportunity on the 31st. The rest is a battle against the wind. Keep an eye on that Tuesday the 28th. It’s your best bet, but don’t expect a classic.
Rusty.
