Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Croyde over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you—this is a tough stretch. We're looking at a long, barren run of tiny, weak swell and onshore winds that just won't let up. The first real chance of getting wet doesn't come until Friday the 10th of July, and even then it's barely a whisper. The water is sitting at a very warm 63°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, a real surprise.
For most of this first week, from Sunday the 5th through to Thursday the 9th, it’s pretty grim. Swell heights are stuck between 1ft and 3ft, with periods mostly around 8-9 seconds—that's short-period, weak, windswell stuff. The combined energy is pathetic, reading between 23 and 82, which is barely a ripple. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, so it's just messy. The only slight glimmer in that first week is Wednesday morning, the 8th of July, when the wind goes glassy, but with only 1ft of swell, it’s flat as a pancake.
Friday 10th July is where you might just justify dragging your board down. Morning session is the call. The swell nudges up to 2ft from the west, period at 9 seconds, with a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the northeast. The energy is still weak at 85, but it’s described as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions". Honestly, if you're desperate, that's your window, but keep expectations low.
After that, the weekend turns into a mess. Saturday the 11th gets a little bump in energy (141), but that’s because the wind cranks up to 19-22 mph from the northwest. The swell is 3ft to 3ft and the period drops to a shocking 5 seconds. That’s pure wind-chop. For a beach setup like Croyde, that's more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day. It'll be lumpy and rough.
We then slide into another quiet spell. From Sunday the 12th right through to Monday the 20th of July, it's pretty much all 0.3ft to 1ft waves. The period does get interesting on Monday the 13th, with a 19-second swell from the southwest, but the height is just 0.3ft—that's a ghost swell, not enough to break. Combined energy barely breaks 40 for most of that second week.
There’s a moment on Friday the 17th of July morning when we get offshore wind from the east-northeast and clean conditions, but with only 1ft of 8-second west swell, it’s still flat.
The standout, if you can even call it that, is Friday 10th July. Croyde is a very consistent, exposed spot, and an optimum swell direction from the west-southwest, which we have. But a 2ft west swell with a 9-second period is just not enough to get the blood pumping. The crowds are "often" here, so on that Friday you might have some company for the tiny waves. It’s not a beginner issue because it’s small, and it’s not an expert’s wave either. It is what it is.
So, overall, we're looking at a poor run. A few mornings might offer a clean surface, but the swell just isn't there. Let's hope the forecasts change, because right now, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
