The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down the next couple of weeks for Croyde. I’ll be honest, it’s feeling a bit barren out there. The forecast is mostly “poor surf conditions,” with only a couple of windows that are worth loading up the board for. The water temp is sitting at 66°F, which is a good 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year – so you’ll be comfortable in a 3/2, no need for the thick rubber.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday morning, the 22nd of August. We’ve got a tiny 1ft swell from the WSW, with a 10-second period. The energy is weak at only 47 (combined energy of all swells directed here). The wind is a gentle cross-offshore from the NE, which is a rare treat, keeping the surface clean. The surf report says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and it’s true – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s the cleanest window we get. The crowd situation is often an issue at Croyde, so be ready for company. This is one of the best options in the whole outlook, but it’s a real small-wave day.
After that, there’s a long gap. The rest of the 22nd, all of the 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th are rated as poor. The 26th does see a bit more size – 4ft to 5ft from the WSW – but with cross-on and onshore winds, it’s going to be a mess. The energy jumps to 367 (moderate) on the 26th morning, but the conditions are just too rough.
The next date that’s worth a mention is Friday afternoon, the 28th of August. We get another “surfable waves” report with a 4ft WSW swell, period of 6 seconds, and a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the SSE, keeping it clean. The energy is 101 (weak to moderate). It’s better than the rest, but still an ordinary day.
The final little blip is on the 31st of August, Monday morning, when we see a 6ft swell from the WSW with a 9-second period. The energy is a solid 512 (moderate to strong). But the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the NW, so it’s going to be lumpy and choppy. It’s a bigger wave, but only for the patient and experienced.
Basically, there’s a lot of nothing and a few small windows of clean, small surf. The standout is definitely the Saturday morning, 22nd August, for the cleanest, most user-friendly conditions, even if it’s small. The 28th afternoon is a second, lesser option. Everything else is a write-off for the foreseeable future. The setup is mostly exposed beach and reef, and with the wind and swell directions, it’s not offering much for paddle surfing. If you’re into kite surfing, the stronger wind days with the onshore slop might be more interesting.
Stay patient, lads.
