The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m scratching my head a bit. For the first twelve days, from now until the 25th of July, it’s pretty much a flat spell. There’s virtually nothing to get excited about. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves with hardly any energy behind them. The combined energy readings are mostly in the single digits or low teens, which is basically nothing. You’d be wasting your time with a board in the water.
The main break we’re watching is Croyde. It’s exposed to a WSW swell, but there’s just no push. The wind is often offshore from the East, which would be perfect if there was any swell, but it’s like having a perfectly waxed board with no waves.
The water temperature is a real talking point, though. It’s sitting at 64°F right now, which is a massive 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a standout, but it won’t help you catch a wave.
The first real sign of life comes on Sunday, the 26th of July. The morning shows a bit of a pulse with a 5ft swell from the West, but it’s short-period at 7 seconds. The energy is finally moderate. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SE, so it could be rideable for the more experienced crew. The afternoon looks similar, with a 5ft west swell and very light cross-off winds, making it cleaner. For a break that’s been flat for so long, this is the one to circle.
Then Monday, the 27th of July, is the best of the bunch. The morning brings a solid 5ft swell from the West with a 9-second period, and the energy is properly moderate. The wind is a clean offshore from the ENE. The afternoon holds up with a 5ft west swell and light cross-off winds. This is the window. For a spot that’s been dead, this is a proper pick-up. It’s not massive, but it’s the best we’ve got. Croyde can handle a west swell, and with that offshore wind, it’ll be clean.
After that, Tuesday the 28th sees it drop off quickly with onshore winds, and the rest of the period fades back into small, choppy junk. So, if you’re a patient surfer, hold out for the 26th and 27th. That’s your window.
Stay patient, stay stoked.
Rusty.
