Alright, grab a coffee, folks. Rusty here.
Right, so if you’re lookin’ at Croyde for the next couple weeks, you’re gonna need some patience. We’re lookin’ at a proper flat spell through most of the first week and into the second. The swell energy is weak (down to about 320 kW/m on Thursday afternoon, droppin’ right off to single digits and low double digits). That Thursday afternoon sees 5 feet of short-period windswell from the W (only 8 seconds), but it’s comin’ with a nasty 25 km/h cross-on from the WNW. That’s messy and not worth paddlin’ out for.
Then from Friday 3 July right through to Monday 13 July, it’s pretty much a write-off. Swell heights stay tiny—between 1 foot and 4 feet—and the energy barely gets goin’. Most mornings you’ve got onshore wind, and the wave comment is “poor surf conditions” all the way. There’s a couple of mornings where the wind swings offshore (like Thursday 9 July with a 20 km/h Easterly and Friday 10 July with a 40 km/h Easterly), but the swell is only 1 feet with a short period (9–7 seconds). That’s barely a ripple, and with that 40 km/h offshore breeze you’d be fightin’ to even get out. Not happenin’.
Now, there is a tiny glimmer. On Tuesday 14 July, the morning shows some life: 3 feet from the W, period stretchin’ out to 11 seconds, which is proper groundswell energy. The combined energy jumps to 200 kW/m—moderate, but a step up. And the wind? A gentle offshore from the ENE at 15 km/h. That’s clean, glassy conditions. The water temp’s sittin’ at 62°F with a 2°C anomaly, so it’s a touch warmer than normal for early July, which is nice. This is the standout of the whole outlook. Croyde is very consistent when it does come, and the optimum swell direction is WSW—this is close enough, comin’ from the W. Expect rippable, lined-up waves if you’re intermediate or above. But be aware that Croyde can get crowded, and the file says it’s “often” busy, so get in early.
Beyond that, Wednesday 15 July through Friday 17 July sees the swell drop back down below 2 feet with short periods, so that Tuesday mornin’ is your only real shot. If you miss it, you’re waitin’ another week, and even then the later days show a jump to 4 feet on Friday 17 July mornin’ (period only 6 seconds) with a light ENE offshore, but the energy’s only 143 kW/m—ordinary conditions at best.
So the takeaway: the first week and a half is flat and blown out. Don’t bother. Mark your calendar for the mornin’ of Tuesday 14 July—that’s the one. Clean, long-period groundswell, moderate energy, and offshore breeze. It won’t be huge, but it’ll be fun and clean. Everything else is a miss or a maybe.
Rusty.
