Right then, let’s have a look at Croyde. I’ll be honest with you, mate – this isn’t one of those times where I’m buzzing to get the wetsuit on. The whole 16-day window is a bit of a struggle. We’ve got a real flat spell coming in, and when we do finally see some push, the wind is going to be a nightmare.
The first few days, from Sunday the 12th through to the end of that first week, it’s basically a lake. The swell is tiny, around 0.3 ft to 1 ft, with a combined energy reading that’s barely a whisper (16). The water is a balmy 64°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive. The wind is offshore from the east, which is perfect for shape, but there’s just nothing to shape. It’s frustrating.
We then roll into a flat patch that lasts for days. The swell stays tiny, the energy reads are low, and the wind is all over the shop. It’s not until Thursday the 23rd that we finally see some proper size. The swell jumps to 7 ft from the NNW, with a combined energy of 390 (moderate) – but it’s a short period windswell (6 seconds). The wind is a strong cross-onshore from the SW, making it a messy, lumpy 30 mph wind. The set-up here is a beach, and with that wind, it’s going to be a complete washing machine. Honestly, for a beach break with that much onshore wind, it looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
The same story continues into the weekend. Saturday the 26th has the biggest swell of the whole run – 8 ft from the WSW, with a combined energy of 696 (strong). But again, the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, making it bumpy and hard to manage. For a standard surfer, that’s a messy, blown-out day. The conditions are just poor across the board.
So, there’s no real standout. If you’re desperate and an expert, maybe look at the very end of the window, but it’s a long shot. The scores are all low, and the consistency just isn’t there. It’s a quiet period for Croyde. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d be keeping the board in the car.
Rusty.
