The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let's break down what's coming for Croyde. Honestly, it's a tough run ahead. The water is sitting at a toasty 66° right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first few days are a total bust. Thursday the 20th has rain showers and a nasty 19 mph cross-onshore wind from the WNW, with a messy 6ft swell and a combined energy of 394 (moderate wave energy), but it's just not worth getting wet. Friday the 21st isn't much better with a dropping swell and a choppy cross-shore wind.
We see a slight improvement on Saturday the 22nd morning. It's tiny, just 1ft of WSW swell with a period of 10 seconds, but the wind turns light and cross-offshore from the ENE, cleaning it right up. The energy is weak at 57, so it's small, clean, and very ordinary. Sunday the 23rd morning sees a glassy-offshore breeze from the east, but the swell is gone at 1.0ft and 22 (weak energy). Not really worth the drive.
There's a big gap of several days there with nothing to recommend. The next notable moment is a pulse of swell arriving on Wednesday the 26th. The morning shows 5ft from the SW with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 241 (moderate). It's still a bit cross-shore from the S, but the afternoon gets a bit cleaner with a cross-offshore SE breeze, and the same 5ft swell. It's still a marginal call, with a score that says it’s only just surfable.
After that, things get wild, but not in a good way. Friday the 28th afternoon sees the swell jump to 12ft from the WSW with a period of 8 seconds and a massive 1729 combined energy (very strong wave energy). But with a 16 mph cross-onshore wind, it’s all-out chaos. This is only for experts, if anyone's crazy enough to paddle out. The setup at Croyde is a beach, so with that much wind and size, it'd be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The only real standout in the whole window might be the weekend of the 29th and 30th. Saturday the 29th morning has 8ft of W swell, period 9 seconds, and 2348 combined energy (very strong). It's still onshore, the wind is gentle from the W, but the score suggests it's a marginal prospect. That's the best we get, which says a lot. Then it all fades back to tiny wind-affected junk for the first week of September.
The final flicker is Thursday the 3rd of September morning, with 4ft of W swell, a short 6-second period, and an offshore E breeze at 6 mph. The energy is 137 (moderate), so it'd be clean but weak. And on Friday the 4th of September morning, there's a glassy 4ft from the NNW, with no wind at all and 124 combined energy. It's surfable, but very short period and ordinary.
To be honest, there’s no standout session in this 16-day window. It’s pretty barren. We’ve got consistent swell sometimes, but the wind nearly always ruins it. Forecasts can change though, so don't write it off completely.
Rusty.
