Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the Walcott stretch over the next couple of weeks. I've gotta be straight with you—it's looking pretty quiet. The swell window is just not firing, and we're dealing with a whole lot of small, weak, short-period slop. If you're itching for a paddle, you'll find something, but don't expect any magic.
We kick things off from Sunday the 5th of July. It's a flat start, really. The combined energy of all swells is basically zero (0) on Sunday morning, and while we get a tiny 2 ft bump from the NNW in the afternoon, the period is a measly 5 seconds. That's just wind chop with 18 units of energy. Not worth getting wet for. Monday the 6th is similar—tiny 0.7 ft to 2 ft waves, all below 6 seconds. The wind is mostly cross-off from the west, keeping the surface clean, but there's just no push. That poor pattern holds through Thursday the 9th. The swell creeps up to a maximum of 2 ft on Wednesday morning, period at 7 seconds, and energy at a weak 51. It’s better than nothing, but still a 'poor surf conditions' call.
Then we hit a rough patch. From Friday the 10th right through to the 16th, conditions get worse. The wind swings onshore from the NE and ENE, blowing at 12 to 16 mph, and the swell stays tiny—between 1 ft and 3 ft, but all short-period windswell of 4 seconds. The combined energy gets up to just 30 on the 13th, but that onshore breeze is going to make a mess. The setup is looking more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing during that stretch.
We finally get a little reprieve on Thursday the 17th. The morning is glassy with a light SSW breeze at 3 mph, and there’s a small 1 ft wave from the north with a 7-second period. The energy is still weak at 17, but that glassy surface is a treat. It’s the cleanest the ocean will look all week. The following days see a bit more size, reaching 3 ft on Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th, but the wind is fresh or moderate onshore, keeping the surface lumpy and choppy. The last record on Monday the 20th shows a 2 ft north swell with a moderate offshore breeze from the southwest (12 mph), which might offer the cleanest wave of the bunch, but it’s still a long way from good.
As for Walcott itself—it's a beginner-friendly spot but it's inconsistent and rarely breaks properly. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing wild. The best advice I can give is to keep an eye on the forecast. It tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, we’re in a blank run.
Rusty.
