The Lowdown

Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s just get this out of the way: the surf outlook for Walcott for the next couple of weeks is a proper shocker. We've got a long stretch of flat, weak, and messy conditions on the cards. The first record we have is for Monday the 17th, and it’s pretty grim. There’s a tiny 1ft swell, but it’s coming from the north with a cross-onshore breeze, so it’s going to be a bumpy, gutless mess. The water’s a balmy 67° and it’s running about 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, which feels like a bit of a silver lining, I guess.

The rest of that first week is more of the same. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th see the swell drop even further, down to under 1ft. Even though the wind goes cross-off and the surf looks clean, there’s just no power behind it. The combined energy stays weak, in the single digits to the 20s. It’s the sort of stuff that’s only good for a paddle and a chat with the lads, not actual surfing. We get a bit of a bump on Friday the 21st, with the swell pushing up to 5ft and the energy climbing to 137, but the wind swings north and goes onshore, so it’ll be lumpy and messy. Not what we want.

We’re looking at a blank stretch for a few days with no quality surf on offer. Then, there’s a brief glimmer on Sunday the 23rd. The swell holds at 4ft from the north, the wind drops right out to glassy in the morning, and the energy is a moderate 177. The comment even says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not going to be epic, but if you’re desperate, that Sunday morning window is about as good as it gets. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it won’t have much push.

After that, it’s back into the doldrums. The following week we see a bigger pulse of swell arrive on Tuesday the 25th, with 6ft from the northeast and energy hitting 216. But the wind is howling onshore from the northeast as well, so the quality will be poor. This is looking more like a kitesurfing setup than a paddle-surfing one if the wind stays up. The whole second week is a washout, with the swell disappearing completely by the end of the month and into September. There is a brief moment on Friday the 28th where the offshore wind kicks in, but the swell is a pathetic 0.3ft, so it’s a non-event.

So, the long and short of it: there are no real standouts here. Honestly, the only thing worth getting out of bed for in this whole 16-day window is that Sunday the 23rd glassy morning. Even then, keep your expectations on the floor. It’s gonna be small and a bit weak. It’s a grim run, but the area is fairly exposed, and these flat spells don’t usually last forever. Forecasts can change, so we keep our fingers crossed. For now, I'd say give the board a rest and maybe wax the kite.

Rusty.
