The Lowdown
Right then. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking.
Honestly, mate, this sixteen-day stretch is a bit of a struggle for Walcott. It’s a real slow burn, and for the first week and a half, the swell just isn’t doing anything for us. There are huge gaps of nothing with the first real opportunity not even looking good until the very end of the run. The water is sitting at 67°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’ll feel nice when you’re floating around waiting.
We’re starting off pretty rough. For the first three days, from Wednesday the 19th to Friday the 21st of August, it’s all under 3 ft and messy—short period windswell with crap winds. The combined energy is weak (23), so don’t bother paddling out. It doesn’t really pick up until Friday afternoon when a pulse of 6 ft from the north bumps the energy up (355), but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. That makes it a write-off.
Saturday the 22nd is more of the same: 5 ft north swell (184) but still choppy with cross-shore winds. Not for us. Sunday the 23rd morning is the first glimpse of something clean—a glassy 3 ft swell (146), but it’s a short 9-second period from the north. Surfable, but very ordinary. The rest of that week just fades away again into tiny, poor conditions with energy dropping down into the teens and thirties.
Now, after a long, blank run from the 25th through to the 1st of September, we finally get something to talk about. Wednesday the 2nd of September is the standout. Wednesday morning kicks off with a 8 ft swell from the north-west (387), and the wind goes clean, which is a big deal. But it’s the afternoon that’s the true highlight. We’re looking at an 8 ft north-west swell (540) with light winds cleaning it right up. This is proper size—expert territory only, so leave the foamies at home. It’s short period (7 seconds) so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but the energy is strong and the conditions look good. This is the only real call I’d make, but keep in mind it’s over a week away, so don’t lock it in just yet.
Other than that, the spot is inconsistent and rarely breaks with any quality. It’s a tough outlook, but these blank runs happen here. The swell will come around eventually.
Rusty.
