The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, I’ll be honest with you – it’s a pretty grim stretch for the foreseeable. The whole sixteen-day window is a write-off, not a single session worth paddling out for. We’ve got a long, flat gap from now all the way through to the end of the month. It’s the kind of run that’s more normal for this area, just a dead spell.
The only place the models even look at is Walcott, and even then, it’s a no-go. The water is sitting at 67°F with a positive anomaly of 4°F, so it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for it.
Through the rest of August and into the first week of September, the swell is tiny and weak. You’ll see some pulses, like on Saturday the 22nd with a 5ft north swell, but the wind is a cross-on shore at 19 mph, turning it into a lumpy, choppy mess with a combined energy of 206 (moderate). The period is a short 6 seconds, so there’s no grunt behind it. The pattern just repeats: small, short-period swell, cross-onshore winds, and a “poor surf conditions” tag on every single entry. The consistency is poor, and it’s a beginner-level break, so even the small stuff on the 24th (2ft) is messy.
The only real spike in energy comes on the 1st of September, with a 7ft north swell and a 366 (strong) combined energy, but it’s still cross-onshore and lumpy. For a beginner spot, that’s too big and ugly. On the 6th of September, we get a 0.7ft, 11-second period groundswell, but it’s from the north, which is the optimum direction, but it’s so small it’s practically flat. The wind is clean, but you’d be scratching for a ripple.
So, there’s nothing to get excited about. No standouts, no clean waves, no decent windows. You’d be better off finding a lake or a river to mess about in. Don’t hold your breath on this one.
