The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what's coming up for the next couple of weeks.
Truth be told, this forecast is a tough pill to swallow. For the first two weeks, we're looking at a proper flat spell. The swell is tiny, barely a bump for days on end. We're talking wave heights of just 0.3 to 0.7 feet, with no real punch behind them. The combined wave energy is mostly in the single digits or low teens (3 to 14), which is just pathetic. The wind is all over the shop, but most of the time it's cross-on or cross-off, which doesn't help when there's nothing to work with.
It's not until the very end of the run, around Wednesday the 30th of July, that we finally see a flicker of life. Even then, the models are calling it "poor surf conditions," so don't get your hopes up too high. From the 15th all the way through to the 29th, it's basically a whitewash for any decent paddle.
The only wave in the picture is Llantwit Major. This is a point break, fairly exposed to the southwest, which is the direction we need. It's a fairly consistent spot, but it's been a barren run. The water temp is a notable 67°F right now, which is about 8°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that's very unusual for the area, so at least the swim will be nice.
Now, about that late pulse. On the morning of Wednesday the 30th of July, we see a bit of a lift. We get a 3-foot swell from the west, with a period of 6 seconds. That's a short-period, local windswell, so it'll be a bit lumpy. The wind is cross-on from the west at 9 mph, which will put some chop on it. The combined energy jumps to 78, which is at least in the moderate range. It's not great, but it's the best we've seen in two weeks.
On Thursday the 31st of July, the afternoon looks a touch bigger again, with a 4-foot west swell, still a short 6-second period. The wind picks up though, to a moderate cross-on from the WNW at 16 mph, making it choppy. The energy is 99, still moderate. This is the only window where you might find a semi-rideable wave, but it's strictly for the die-hards. It's not a standout, just the only option.
Overall, this is a tough one to call. The surf is poor for the entire 16-day outlook. The only real chance is that late July pulse. It's not a beginner's wave at 3 to 4 feet, and with the onshore wind, it'll be a battle. Keep an eye on it, but I wouldn't be making any plans.
Rusty.
