Alright, let me tell you straight up, the next sixteen days at Llantwit Major (Wales) are a bit of a write-off for us surfers. I’m looking at the charts and honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about. The swell is tiny and weak, with combined wave energy barely scraping into double digits – we’re talking values between (13) and (52) the whole time. That’s just not enough to push a rideable wave.
For the first week, from Sunday the 5th of July right through to Saturday the 11th, we’re stuck with weak, short-period wind swell from the west. Heights are hovering around 1 ft to 2 ft, with periods mostly under 9 seconds. It’s cross-onshore and choppy for the vast majority of that time, which is not going to be clean. Wednesday morning the 8th actually goes glassy, but with only 1 ft of swell and an energy reading of (13), it’s flat. You might find a knee-high dribbler on the cleaner mornings like Thursday the 9th or Friday the 10th when we get a light offshore from the east, but even then, it’s marginal at best. The water temperature is a notable 66°F, which is “much warmer than normal” for this time of year.
Then from Sunday the 12th right through to Monday the 20th, we’re in a prolonged flat spell. Swell heights drop to 0.3 ft or 0.7 ft, with the combined energy falling to single digits – as low as (1) on the 13th. Even the glassy mornings on Tuesday the 14th, Wednesday the 15th, and Saturday the 18th won’t save this. There are a few brief moments of offshore wind, like the Monday morning the 13th and Thursday morning the 16th, but with no swell to speak of, it’s a lake. This stretch is a full seven days of nothing. Even a fairly consistent spot like Llantwit Major can’t manufacture waves out of thin air.
Honestly, this looks more like a window for a paddle on a SUP than a surf. If the wind gets strong from the northwest or west-northwest, like it does on Saturday the 11th with 22 mph winds, the bay will be choppy and messy – better suited for a kite session than a surfboard.
It’s a tough one to report, but that’s how it goes sometimes. The sea will be flat and clean on those glassy days, perfect for a swim, just not for riding.
Rusty.
