Right then, folks. Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough watch for the next couple of weeks around Llantwit Major. The charts are showing a proper flat spell, and there’s not a single standout session in the whole 16-day window. The combined energy of all swells directed here is barely a whisper, with values sitting in the weak zone (mostly between 5 and 98).
We’re starting off on Saturday the 4th of July with a bit of a messy, chopped-up vibe. The wind’s howling out of the west at 25 to 30 km/h, blowing straight across the point. The swell’s a pathetic 2 ft to 3 ft, and that short period of 6 seconds means the waves are just wind slop. It’s poor, and it’s going to stay poor.
Sunday the 5th through to Tuesday the 8th is more of the same – cross-on westerlies, tiny little waves that never get above 2 ft, and combined energy readings that are barely registering. The water temp is going to feel about average for the time of year, nothing to get excited about there.
There’s a tiny glimmer on Thursday the 9th of July. The morning sees a light easterly cross-off breeze, and by the afternoon it goes glassy with a 5 km/h east-northeast wind. The swell is still tiny at 1.0 ft, but with a period of 9 seconds, it’s a bit more organised. If you’ve got a log and you’re desperate, that’s your window for a few clean, gutless dribblers. But honestly, don’t get your hopes up.
From Friday the 10th right through to Saturday the 18th of July, it’s just a long, drawn-out desert. The swell stays under 1 ft the whole time, with combined energy values stuck in the teens and single digits. Most days are cross-on westerlies, with a few stronger gusts of 30 km/h. There’s a morning on Thursday the 16th of July with a 1 ft, 9-second swell, but the wind is an onshore 15 km/h. It’s poor surf conditions, full stop.
The only other moment of calm is the very last day, Sunday the 19th of July, with a glassy morning out of the southeast at 5 km/h. But the swell is just 0.7 ft with a weak 8-second period. It’s flat.
No way around it, this is a blank run. It’s the kind of lull that’s more normal for the area when the swell windows just don’t line up. Leave the boards in the van and go for a hike. The surf will come back, it always does, but not in this forecast window.
Rusty.
