The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Llantwit Major.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough stretch. We're looking at a long, dry spell of flat, clean days with barely a ripple, but no swell to speak of. From now, through the 25th of August, the waves are tiny, mostly 0.3ft to 0.7ft, and even with some glassy or offshore conditions, there's just no energy in the water. The combined energy readings are practically zero (2-10). It’s a flat spell that’s going to test your patience.
The wait continues. We don't see anything worth paddling out for until the 28th of August. That Friday morning brings a pulse of weak swell – 2ft from the WSW with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 72 (weak), but the wind is a light cross-onshore, making for bumpy conditions. It's not going to be good, but it’s the first sign of life after a long dry run.
Things get a little more interesting, but not exactly good, towards the end of the month. Saturday the 29th sees the swell bump up to 5ft from the west. This is the biggest swell of the whole outlook, but it's short-period windswell (6-7 seconds) with fresh cross-onshore winds. The combined energy hits 232 (moderate), and while there's more water moving, the quality will be chopped up, lumpy, and pretty ugly. This is not the clean, lined-up point break we love. Honestly, with the wind and that short, messy period, this is looking more like a session for the kite surfers than the paddle guys.
Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st stick with similar, poor-quality, wind-affected swell between 4ft and 5ft. It’s still cross-onshore and short period. There’s no standout session here. The water temp is sitting at a balmy 69°, which is a solid 8° warmer than average for this time of year. That’s very unusual and will feel nice if you can find a clean wave.
After that, it’s back down to small, weak, and choppy stuff through the first week of September, with nothing rallying to save the outlook. There is just no point in this whole 16-day window where everything lines up. There are no true standouts. The best you could hope for is a sneaky paddle on the 28th morning or the 30th afternoon, but set your expectations real low.
Stay patient, and remember, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
