The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Llantwit Major over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough start. We’ve got a real dry spell to get through first.
The first proper surfable waves don’t show up until the morning of Monday, July 29th. That’s a solid ten-day gap from the start of the forecast with nothing worth paddling out for. The water temp is running at 68°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a good 8°F above the norm, so you’ll be comfortable in a shorty or even a spring suit.
From the 17th right through to the 28th, it’s all tiny, weak, and wind-affected – the sort of stuff that’s more frustrating than fun. The combined wave energy readings are mostly single-digit to low double-digit rubbish, with the odd pulse of 20 to 30 but still no real quality. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is often cross-on or cross-off, but not in a good way.
Then on the morning of Monday, July 29th, things finally perk up. The wind goes glassy – dead calm – and the swell hits 4 ft from the west with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 147 (moderate), and the conditions are clean. The waves are surfable but ordinary – it’s a start, not a classic.
The real standout in this outlook is the afternoon of Wednesday, July 30th. Llantwit Major is the spot for this one. The swell is 7 ft from the west, period 9 seconds, and the wind turns glassy again. The combined energy reads 660 (strong). This is a proper-sized groundswell, and with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean and punchy. The swell direction is west, which is ideal for this point break. The crowds are sometimes a factor here, so don’t expect to have it to yourself. This swell is right on the edge of being too big for beginners. For experienced surfers, it’s the pick of the fortnight.
The morning of Thursday, July 30th, is a bit bigger at 10 ft with a period of 9 seconds and a clean cross-off wind from the east. The combined energy is massive at 1252 (very strong). That’s expert-only territory. The rip will be strong, and the sets will be hefty. Not for the faint-hearted.
After that, it fades quickly. The morning of Friday, July 31st, still has 5 ft waves with a 7-second period, but the energy drops to 239 (moderate), and the wind is clean. It’s surfable but nothing special. By Saturday, August 1st, it’s back to small, choppy, and messy.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a write-off. The second week has one true standout – the afternoon of Wednesday, July 30th, with glassy 7 ft west swell. For the experts, the morning of the 30th also offers a big, clean 10 ft option. Don’t bother before July 29th.
Rusty.
