The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak picture for Llantwit Major. We’re looking at a solid stretch of small, weak swell and messy onshore winds, so don’t expect much to ride for a while. The water is a very unusual 68°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – feels more like the Med than the Bristol Channel, but that’s about the only nice thing I can say.
The first few days are a write-off. From Saturday 18th July right through to Thursday 23rd July, we’ve got tiny waves, barely 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with periods so short they’ve got no push. The only bright spot is Thursday morning 23rd July, when a glassy, light SE wind (5 km/h) will clean up the surface, but there’s no decent swell to take advantage of.
Then it gets a bit more interesting on Saturday 25th July. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the W, with a longer period of 7 seconds, and the combined wave energy hits 157 – that’s moderate energy, finally something to work with. But the wind is a cross-shore at 12 mph in the morning, turning into a full cross-on at 22 mph by the afternoon. It’s going to be lumpy and messy, not clean. Still, for a bigger wave, you’d want to be an experienced surfer because 4ft can be a handful on a beach break, and the onshore wind will chop it up. This is your only real chance for a wave, but it’s not pretty.
From Sunday 26th July onward, it’s back to small, weak swell (2ft to 3ft) with cross-on winds from the W or WNW, mostly in the moderate to fresh breeze range. The energy stays low, between 19 and 58. There’s a brief window on Thursday 30th July morning, with glassy conditions and a NE wind at 5 km/h, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft. Then Friday 31st July and into the first week of August, we get some offshore and cross-off winds from the E and ENE, but the waves are tiny, barely 0.3ft to 0.7ft. The energy is laughable, single digits (2 to 6). It’s clean, but you’ll be floating, not surfing.
The best of a bad bunch is definitely Saturday 25th July, with that 4ft swell. But be honest, with the wind howling onshore, it’s going to be a battle. If you’re a beginner, stay out of the water on that day – it’s too big. For everyone else, it’s a choice between no surf or poor surf.
