The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – it’s shaping up to be a pretty flat and uninspiring stretch for Llantwit Major over the next couple of weeks. The surf just isn’t doing us any favors. We’re looking at a painfully slow start, so if you’re itching to get wet, you might be better off finding something else to do for a while.
We’re starting off with almost nothing. Friday and Saturday are a write-off, with tiny, weak waves in the 0.2ft to 1.6ft range. The energy is just pathetic, with values down around 6 to 36 (weak). Sunday and Monday stay tiny as well, with that long 9-10 second period but no size behind it, and energy reading a measly 1-10 (weak). It’s gonna be a long few days.
This flat spell stretches out for the better part of a week, honestly. From now through around the 28th or 29th, it’s mostly just ankle-biters and dribble. The energy stays weak, and the winds are mostly cross-off but it doesn’t matter because there’s nothing to surf. By the time we get to the 27th and 28th, we see a small blip of energy (20-67, still weak) but the wind goes onshore and chop takes over, so it’s messy mush.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Sunday the 30th. We start to see the swell building a bit and the energy finally gets into the moderate range, hitting 157 (moderate) by the afternoon. Morning starts with a clean 2.9ft, but the wind is straight onshore, which is gonna make it bumpy and hard to ride. The window is short and the quality is poor.
We get a bit more size and energy moving into Monday the 31st and Tuesday the 1st of September, with the swell pushing 3.9ft to 4.6ft and energy climbing up to 235 (moderate). But it’s all onshore wind, so it’s going to be a junky, blown-out mess. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s not going to have any punch. For a surfer, this is just frustrating – all that energy and nowhere good to go with it.
The standout in this pretty bleak picture is late next week, far off on Thursday, the 3rd of September. The guidance is showing a more promising W/NW swell pushing through. The bigger swell, 5.2ft, arrives Thursday afternoon, but the wind will be a moderate cross-onshore. The real hidden gem is Thursday morning when it’s glassy with only 1ft on offer. Now, I know that sounds small, but that glassy, clean look on a point like this can be magic.
Honestly, the one to watch with cautious optimism is the 4th of September. That Friday morning we get a light cross-shore with a 2ft swell from the W and a 5-second period, which is weak and short period. But for a spot like this that doesn’t work often, a clean and small day is way better than a big and blown-out one.
Overall, there’s nothing here that screams out as a classic session. The energy is there for a couple of days, but the wind just ruins it. And remember, the water temp is running a huge 4.3°F warmer than normal for this time of year, a massive anomaly, so it’ll feel more like a late summer dip than a typical autumn freeze.
I wouldn't bother with the board for the next week. If I were you, I'd keep my eyes on the forecasts for next Thursday, the 3rd, as the dawn patrol might be the only clean chance we get. It’s promising, but a long way out, so we’ll have to see if it holds.
So, that’s the long and short of it. It’s not looking good, but that's the way the ocean goes sometimes. Hang loose and keep the faith.
