The Lowdown
Alright, let’s take a look at what’s in store for Carbis Bay. It’s gonna be a slow start, but if you’re willing to wait, there’s a few heavy moments that could be worth the hassle.
We kick off Saturday, August 22nd, with tiny waves. You’re looking at a 2 ft swell from the west, with a 10-second period, and the energy is a weak 126. The wind is onshore from the ENE at 9 mph, so it’s not doing anything for us. Just a messy, choppy paddle. Sunday and Monday are more of the same, with the wind picking up from the east, getting stronger and lumpier. There’s a real dry spell of poor surf until the end of the week.
Things start to get a little pulse on Wednesday, August 26th. The morning has a 3 ft swell from the SSW, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s got no push. The wind is offshore from the SSW at 15 mph, which will clean it up, but it’s barely a blip on the radar. It’s surfable, but just barely.
The first real standout is Thursday, August 27th. The early morning brings a solid 10 ft swell from the west, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a massive 1326, so there’s some serious power behind it. The wind is cross-offshore from the WSW at 12 mph, making for clean conditions. This is heavy, expert-only stuff. At 10 ft on a beach break, it’s going to be a handful and a half. The short period means it’ll be a bit fat and crumbly, but the raw power is there. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no worries.
The other big shout is Saturday, August 29th. The morning has an 8 ft swell from the west, with a 10-second period, and the energy is a whopping 1648. The wind is cross-off from the west at 12 mph, keeping it tidy. It’s still a big wave for the average guy, but the longer period will give it some proper shape. This is the best of the week for the experienced crew. The afternoon eases to 4 ft from the WSW with a 10-second period, and the wind goes light offshore from the SW at 9 mph. That’s a lot cleaner and more manageable for a strong intermediate.
Looking further out, we get a massive swell for Wednesday, September 2nd and Thursday, September 3rd. Swells are 10 ft to 12 ft from the WSW, with a long 11-second period and energy readings over 2000. The wind is offshore from the south and southwest, strong and clean. This is huge, powerful, and for experts only. The forecast says it’s actually too big for this break, so unless you’ve got a big gun and a lot of nerve, you’d be better off looking at a reef or point.
For the rest of the period, it drops off again, with cleaner but smaller waves and fresher onshore winds from the north. The window of opportunity is really that Thursday, August 27th, through to Saturday, August 29th, and then the big, clean, but colossal stuff on September 2nd and 3rd. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, the Saturday the 29th is the one to pencil in.
