The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Carbis Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this stretch looks pretty grim. We’re talkin’ a full 16-day window with not a single recommendation worth paddling out for. That’s a long, flat, and choppy run. The first few days are a write-off, with tiny swell and shifty winds. Friday the 17th has a weak 1ft WNW swell with a short 8-second period, but it’s cross-off and the energy is just a measly 23 (combined energy). Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th see a bit more size, but the wind swings onshore and the period drops to a pathetic 5 seconds – that’s just wind chop, not surf. Monday the 20th through Thursday the 24th is all small, messy, and cross-onshore, with occasional clean moments but hardly any push.
We do see a bit of a bump around Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th. The swell picks up to 5ft to 5.5ft from the WNW, with a period of 6-7 seconds. The combined energy hits 209 to 280 (moderate), so there’s some real water moving. But the wind is cross-shore and the conditions are described as “moderate cross-shore with a cross-chop.” It’s not clean, and that short period means it’ll be a bit lumpy and disorganised. For a beginner spot like Carbis Bay, anything over 5ft is already a bit much, and with the chop, it’s really only going to appeal to more experienced surfers who don’t mind a messy session. The crowds are “sometimes” a factor here, so you might have company, but the quality won’t be worth it.
After that, the last few days of July and into August 1st fade back to small, weak, and mostly onshore or cross-shore junk. The energy drops again, and the period stays short. There’s a few moments with a long-period groundswell (13 seconds) on the 24th, but the swell height is only 0.3ft – that’s a tease, not a wave.
Overall, this is a blank run for Carbis Bay. For an area that’s “inconsistent” anyway, a 16-day stretch with no good surf isn’t a total shock. The forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about. If you’re desperate, the 25th and 26th might offer some bigger, crumbly, cross-shore waves for the keen, but don’t expect any quality.
Stay tuned, and maybe dust off the kite gear – this setup might be more interesting for that than a paddle.
