The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming up for Carbis Bay.
Truth be told, it’s a pretty flat start for the next week and a half. The surf is basically non-existent through to the end of July, with nothing but small, weak, and messy waves. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, and the water is sitting at 64°F which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s one of those frustrating stretches where you’re better off waiting for the gear to dry out. There’s a gap of about ten days with no real surf to speak of.
Then, around Monday the 27th, things start to show a pulse. A bit of swell pushes in, but it’s still raw and lumpy with cross-onshore winds. Not worth getting excited about yet.
The real standout window opens up on Wednesday the 29th of July. The morning brings a clean, cross-offshore wind and a solid 6ft swell from the WNW. The wave energy jumps to 348 (moderate), and the break should start to show some proper shape. This is where the week starts to turn. The surf is still a bit raw for beginners at that size, but for anyone with a bit of experience, it’s a go.
Thursday the 30th keeps the clean cross-off conditions, with swell holding around 7ft from the W and WNW. The energy is climbing into the 400s to 500s. It’s starting to push into that territory where it’s more for the crew who know what they’re doing.
But the best of the lot – the one to really circle – is Friday the 31st of July. The morning session has a powerful 8ft swell from the WNW, with a clean cross-off breeze and the combined energy hitting 766 (strong). That’s proper groundswell energy, and the period is 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit more pushy and lined up. This is expert-level surf, big and powerful, so only the experienced should be out there. It’s a standout, pure and simple.
Into Saturday the 1st of August, the swell is still solid at 7ft from the WNW, with a cleaner offshore wind from the WSW in the afternoon. A bit more manageable, but still a serious wave.
From Sunday the 2nd, the swell starts to ease back into the 5ft to 5ft range, with clean offshore winds. It’s still good, but not the peak of the event.
Overall, the wait is long, but the payoff on the 31st is the real deal. Keep an eye on that one.
Rusty.
