The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Carbis Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim start to the outlook. The first week or so is almost a write-off, with a long stretch of poor surf conditions and very little to get excited about. From Friday the 21st of August right through until the end of that week, the swell is small, the wind is mostly cross-on or messy, and the energy is weak. The swell height barely gets above 3ft, and the combined energy is mostly under 200, which is just gutless. It’s not until the 26th of August that we see a bit of a spike in swell, but it’s still paired with cross-off winds and a short period, so it’s not really doing anything special.
The real standout comes later. Sunday the 30th of August through to Tuesday the 1st of September is where the magic could happen. We’ve got a solid, consistent push of swell coming in from the west and west-southwest, with heights around 7ft to 8ft. That’s a decent size, but it’s not too big for most competent surfers. The real beauty is the wind: it’s offshore or cross-off, which means clean, groomed faces. The combined energy jumps into the 400s and even hits 699 on the Monday morning, which is a sign of proper power in the water. The swell period is around 8 seconds, so it’s a bit of a short-period groundswell, but with that clean wind and solid energy, it’ll still offer some punchy, well-shaped waves. The water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is within a degree of the long-term average, so nothing unusual there.
Carbis Bay (Carbis-Bay) is an exposed spot, and it’s best with a swell from the west-northwest. The forecast is sending plenty of swell from the west and west-southwest, which is a good match. It’s an inconsistent break, so don’t expect a wave every minute, but when the sets come through, they’ll be worth the wait. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so if you can get out early on the Monday morning, you’ll have a better chance of getting some clean ones to yourself.
After that, the energy drops off again. The 2nd and 3rd of September see smaller, weaker surf, and while the 4th of September offers a return to offshore winds and a modest 5ft to 5ft swell, it’s not a patch on that late August window.
All in all, the standout is the weekend of the 30th of August into the 1st of September. That’s the one to aim for. The rest of the run is pretty average.
