The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. I've had a look at the Carbis Bay forecast for the next 16 days, and I'm sorry to say it's a pretty grim stretch. There's no decent surf on the horizon. The whole period is filled with "poor surf conditions" – tiny waves, onshore or cross-shore breezes, and just not enough energy to get excited about. The swell is weak, often under 3 ft, and the wind is rarely your friend. The combined energy readings are mostly in the 40-100 range, which is feeble (46, 41, 68, etc.). Even the few days that show a bump in energy come with other problems.
Let's run through it. From Sunday the 19th through to about Wednesday the 22nd, we've got small, weak swell from the north or northwest, with cross-on winds. Heights are around 1 ft to 3 ft, periods short (5-6 seconds), energy low. Thursday the 23rd is similar with a bit more onshore wind. Friday the 24th the swell drops to 0.3 ft – virtually flat. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th stay tiny, 1 ft, with some cross-off wind but hardly any wave.
Then on Monday the 27th, there's a little spike – the afternoon shows a 5 ft swell from the west with a 9-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 332 (moderate). But the wave comment says "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions" – it's a one-star rating internally. The wind is light cross-shore, so it might be clean-ish, but the swell is short-period and small. Not a standout, just a faint glimmer.
Tuesday the 28th brings a bigger swell – 7 ft from the north, but with a short 7-second period, and the wind is cross-on at 12 mph. Energy is 861 (strong), but the conditions are "moderate cross-onshore and choppy". That's a mess. Over 8 ft would be experts only, but this is 7 ft, so it's still too big for beginners and not clean. Not worth paddling out.
Wednesday the 29th morning has a 3 ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period, cross-off breeze at 9 mph, and energy of 193 (weak). The comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – another one-star moment. Clean, but tiny. That's about it.
From Thursday the 30th onward, it's back to rubbish – small waves, onshore winds, and by Friday the 31st, strong cross-onshore winds from the ESE at 25-28 mph. Into August, Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd have some offshore wind but the swell is still small (3 ft to 5 ft) and mixed with fresh to strong breezes. Monday the 3rd again small and offshore but not enough wave.
So, bottom line: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. Carbis Bay is a beginner spot that's inconsistent even in better times, and this run is a classic blank stretch. The forecast can change, but for now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
