The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Carbis Bay has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag, so let's get into it.
We're starting off with a pretty quiet spell. The surf is small and messy for the first few days. Sunday the 23rd through to Tuesday the 27th of August is mostly a write-off, with tiny, weak swell and cross-shore winds making for poor conditions. You'll be fighting a chop for barely anything rideable. The water temperature is sitting at 63°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Things start to perk up a bit on Thursday the 27th. The morning sees a spike in energy with a solid 6ft swell from the SSW, but the wind is still a bit off. By Thursday afternoon, that's the moment. The wind drops to a light cross-off breeze, and the swell cleans up nicely. The combined energy hits 639 (moderate), and it's offering the best conditions we've seen so far. It's a good window for a session.
The end of August and start of September sees a few more pulses of swell, but the wind is a constant issue. Friday the 28th through to Tuesday the 1st of September has some decent size, with waves around 4ft to 8ft, but the wind is often fresh or strong, keeping the surface lumpy and choppy. For a beginner spot like Carbis Bay, when the swell pushes over 5ft, it starts to get a bit much, and those 8ft days on the 28th and 29th will be for the more experienced crew tackling some lumpy, cross-off conditions.
We get a nice little surprise on Wednesday the 2nd of September. The afternoon brings a clean, offshore wind from the SW and a 6ft swell. The comment says "expect good surf conditions," and with that offshore wind, it’ll be worth a look. The energy is 268 (moderate), so not a huge amount of power, but clean lines.
The weekend of the 5th and 6th of September is where the real muscle shows up. Saturday the 5th has a 7ft to 8ft swell with strong offshore winds. This is expert territory size-wise, and the wind will be ripping, making it hard to paddle into. The energy is strong (507 to 737). Then Sunday the 6th, we're looking at a 10ft swell from the WNW. The combined energy is massive at 1256 to 1396 (very strong). This is a serious, powerful swell. The wind is light on the Sunday afternoon, which is a bonus, but 10ft is a big beast for a place like this. It's a standout for the sheer size and power, but only for the brave.
The final day of the forecast, Monday the 7th of September, is just too big. The morning has a 6ft swell, but the afternoon is a monster 12ft swell from the WSW with a fresh cross-shore wind. The energy is 1351 (very strong). The file even says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. It's a raw, heavy ocean out there.
So, the best on offer? Your true standout is Thursday afternoon, the 27th of August. That's the sweet spot with a clean 6ft swell, light wind, and the best conditions. The second standout is the Wednesday afternoon, the 2nd of September, for the clean offshore lines. The big weekend of the 5th and 6th is for the experts only, a raw power display.
Keep in mind, Carbis Bay is an inconsistent spot, so when it's on, it's worth grabbing. For the rest of the time, you're looking at a lot of lumpy, wind-affected swell.
Rusty.
