The Lowdown
Alright mate, Rusty here. I've been looking at the charts for Carbis Bay, and it's a quiet start. It takes a while before we get anything worth paddling for. The water temp is around 64°F, which is about normal for the season.
The first proper swell shows up on Thursday the 20th of August. The morning brings a WNW swell of about 8ft with a 9-second period. The wave energy is moderate at 881. Wind is cross-off from the WNW at 18 mph, keeping it clean. That size is a bit much for beginners. The afternoon drops to 7ft, but the wind goes cross-shore and messes it up, leaving lumpy, choppy conditions. Not great.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are poor. The swell drops, and the wind is onshore, giving us small, choppy, rubbish waves of 3ft to 3ft.
Sunday the 23rd through Tuesday the 26th is mostly flat. A faint 0.9ft long-period pulse on Sunday morning doesn't save it. The energy is weak, under 90. Not worth the walk.
The first real standout is Thursday the 27th of August. The morning gives us a clean 4ft from the W with a 9-second period. The wind is a cross-off from the WNW at 12 mph, and the wave energy is a solid 291. The afternoon picks up to 6ft with a longer 10-second period and 569 energy, still clean with a cross-off wind from the W at 18 mph. This is the best of the first week.
We have a few days of small, weak surf. Saturday the 29th of August afternoon is a sneaky good one. Only 4ft from the W, but the wind switches to a clean offshore breeze from the SW at 15 mph. The report says "moderate offshore and clean." It's surfable and tidy, but remember this break is inconsistent, so you'll be waiting a bit between sets.
Into the second week, Monday the 31st of August is a big day. The morning has a powerful 10ft swell from the W with a 10-second period. The energy is a massive 1539. The wind is a fresh cross-shore at 18 mph, making it lumpy. This is for experienced surfers only. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 8ft, but still big and powerful with clean cross-off wind.
Tuesday the 1st of September is clean but solid at 6ft to 8ft.
The biggest standout for the experienced crew is Wednesday the 2nd of September morning. The swell is 7ft from the WNW. The wind is a fresh offshore breeze from the SW at 18 mph. "Fresh offshore and clean." The energy is 624. It's over 6ft, so it's expert territory, but it is the cleanest, most powerful session of the forecast.
After that, it fades into tiny 3ft and 2ft waves on the 3rd. For the best clean surf, the 27th of August is your best bet. If you can handle it, the morning of the 2nd of September is the real deal.
Rusty.
