Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Carbis Bay over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s a tough start. The first few days are pretty grim with poor conditions and no real surf to get excited about. We have to sit through a gap of a few days with nothing worthwhile, but then we get a couple of windows that might just be worth paddling out for.
Friday the 3rd morning is your best early shout. It’s not big, with a 5ft swell rolling in from the west and a 10-second period. The real winner here is the wind – glassy, dead calm from the southwest. That’s going to give you clean, smooth lines. The combined energy is moderate at 395, so there’s enough push for a longboard or a funboard. This is the standout of the whole run, honestly.
After that, the surf tapers off quickly. By Saturday the 4th, we’re down to 3ft and 4ft with messy cross-shore winds, and it just gets smaller and more mixed up through the following days. You’ll see some glassy mornings again, like Monday the 6th and Monday the 13th, but the swell is tiny – 3ft and 2ft respectively, with weak combined energy (104 and 186). Not much happening.
Now, there’s a bit of a tease in the second week. Monday the 13th afternoon sees a bump in swell to 4ft from the west, but the period jumps to a very long 13 seconds, and the combined energy gets a strong kick up to 601. That’s proper groundswell energy, but at a beach break like Carbis Bay, that long period can make the waves break a bit too straight and hard to line up. Still, it’s the most power we see all fortnight. The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the NNW, so it won’t be perfect, but it’s the closest thing to a session on offer in the second week.
Water temp is sitting at 61°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year with the anomaly at just 1°. It’s not warm, but it’s not unusually cold either.
Bottom line: if you have a window on Friday morning the 3rd, grab it. The rest is a whole lot of waiting and hoping.
Rusty.
