The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week or so is a real struggle. We’ve got a lot of days with messy winds and small, weak swell, so you’ll be waitin’ a while for anything decent. The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Thursday the 27th of August, and even then it’s a gentle start.
The pick of the whole period, the one that’s got me a little excited, is Monday the 31st of August. We’ve got a solid 10ft swell rollin’ in from the west, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a hefty 2472, which is strong. What makes it special is the wind is howlin’ offshore from the WSW at 19 mph, cleanin’ it right up. This is a big, powerful swell though, breaching the 8ft mark, so this is for the experienced crew only. The break is Carbis Bay, and it’s an inconsistent spot, so you’ll need patience, but when a set comes through, it’ll be worth the wait. Expect crowds here sometimes.
The days before that are a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday the 27th of August morning has clean conditions with a gentle breeze and a 4ft swell from the west. The combined energy is moderate at 356. It’s not huge, but the clean cross-off wind will make for some nice, rideable waves for the more competent surfers. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
We then hit a bit of a lull again before the big one on the 31st. After that, the first of September (Tuesday) morning looks promising again with a clean 6ft swell from the WNW, a gentle breeze, and moderate energy (508). It’s a much more manageable size, good for a wider range of surfers.
Further out, there are a few other pulses of swell, but the wind is a problem – strong breezes and near gales ruin the surface. The standout is clearly that Monday the 31st of August, but keep an eye on the 1st of September as a solid backup.
Rusty out.
