The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, digging into the local surf forecast for the next couple of weeks.
First off, let’s be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak start. We’ve got a solid gap of no good surf until the end of the week. The first sniff of anything rideable won’t come until Thursday the 27th, and even then, it’s marginal.
The winner from about Thursday 27th August through Saturday 29th August is going to be Carbis Bay. The setup is far from perfect, but it's the only game in town. The water temperature is sitting right around average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there.
For Thursday the 27th, we’ve got a very short-period swell pushing in from the SSW. Thursday morning sees the swell around 5ft, dropping to 4ft in the afternoon. The wind will be offshore or cross-offshore, which will keep the surface clean. The energy is moderate (355 to 280), but with a period of only 7 seconds, these waves are going to be a bit weak and crumbly. It’s still a paddle, but it’s decidedly marginal.
Now, the best of the lot looks like Saturday the 29th. The swell bumps up to 8ft from the W, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is cross-offshore from the WSW, so the surface should be clean. The combined energy is strong at 746, so there’s some proper push out there. Be warned though – at 8ft, this is getting into expert territory. The waves will be chunky and powerful, not for the faint of heart. The long gap between sets might make paddling out a bit easier, but the short period means the waves won't be super well-shaped.
After that, the swell drops off quickly. The second week from the 1st of September onwards looks like a complete write-off. We’re talking tiny, weak swells in the 0.7ft to 3ft range with onshore or cross-shore winds. The energy is weak (22 to 127), and the conditions are just not surfable. It’s a long, quiet spell.
So, to sum it up: don’t even bother until Thursday the 27th. Your best bet is Saturday the 29th at Carbis Bay for the biggest, cleanest waves, but only if you’ve got the skills for it. Everything in the second week is a dead loss.
Rusty.
