The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Gwithian in proper units.
This is a sparse stretch ahead. Over the next 16 days, the first surf worth a look lands on Saturday the 22nd of August, and even then it’s tiny. Forget Friday the 21st – onshore wind has it all chopped and ugly.
The one bright spot, and it’s a real gem, is Saturday the 5th of September. We get about 3ft of west swell, and the afternoon goes glassy – zero wind. That’s about as clean as it gets. The water temp is around 64°F at the start, about average for the season. That glassy session is the best of the whole run. Gwithian can get busy, but with those conditions, it’ll be worth sharing the lineup.
Before that, the first recommendation is Saturday the 22nd morning – a small 2ft west swell with a clean cross-off breeze from the east. Combined energy is light at 136. It’s rideable but nothing special. That’s the highlight of the first week, and that says enough.
Sunday the 23rd is flat. Monday the 24th has offshore wind but the swell drops to 1ft – clean but unrideable.
The end of August brings some size, but the wind turns ugly. Wednesday the 26th afternoon has 6ft from the SSW with a short 7-second period, but clean cross-off wind. Combined energy is moderate at 286. Might be okay, but the shape won’t be great. By Thursday the 27th it’s lumpy with cross-on wind. Friday the 28th hits 8ft but with strong onshore wind – a blown-out mess, best left for the kite crowd.
Second week is less certain, but that Saturday the 5th of September glassy session is the one to wait for. Sunday the 31st shows 8ft with cross-shore wind and moderate energy at 699, but only marginal due to tide or conditions.
Bottom line: if you want clean waves, aim for Saturday the 5th of September afternoon. Everything else is a compromise.
