Right then, let's have a look at what's on offer for Gwithian. Straight up, it's a pretty bleak picture for the next couple of weeks. We're looking at a solid block of poor conditions with no real standout sessions.
For the whole of the first week, from Sunday the 5th right through to Saturday the 11th, the surf is small and messy. We've got weak wave energy (mostly in the 62 to 192 bracket) with onshore or cross-onshore winds messing up what little swell there is. Water temp is sitting at 61°F, which is pretty much bang on average for the time of year.
There's a real brief glimmer on the morning of Tuesday the 7th, where the wind goes glassy, but the swell is a tiny 2ft from the W with a period of 9 seconds. It's clean as a whistle, but there's just nothing to ride.
The second week doesn't get much better. The swell picks up a bit around the 11th and 12th July, with some energy readings getting into the hundreds, but it's all wind-affected. On Saturday the 11th, the afternoon sees a 6ft swell from the N with a short 7-second period and strong cross-onshore winds at 19 mph. The energy reading is a chunky 562, but the conditions are described as 'lumpy' and choppy. It's more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session. This is the sort of thing that'll be too big and messy for beginners and not good enough for the experts to enjoy properly.
The only other moments that are worth a mention are the mornings of Wednesday the 8th, Thursday the 16th, and Friday the 17th. These have some clean conditions with light offshore or cross-offshore winds from the NE and ENE, but the swell is tiny – just 2ft to 3ft – and the wave energy is low (under 100 on the 16th and 17th). It's surfable but very ordinary, and you'll be scratching around for any kind of rideable face. The break is consistent and fairly exposed to the swell, but the swell direction on these cleaner days is W or N, not the ideal WNW direction. Crowds are often a factor here, so even on a rubbish day, you might have company.
So, to sum it up: there's no standout session in the whole 16-day window. The first week is a write-off, and the second week offers only a couple of very marginal, small-wave options that are just about rideable if you're desperate. It's a long, dry spell.
