Alright folks, Rusty here, checkin' in with the outlook for Gwithian.
Right, let’s be straight with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a grind. We’ve got very little on offer for most of the period, with a real flat spell from Saturday the 4th right through to the morning of Tuesday the 14th. That’s a solid ten days of barely a ripple. The water temp is sittin’ about average for July at 61°, nothin’ unusual there.
Our only real chance for a surf comes on the first day, Friday morning, July 3rd. Gwithian is served up a clean 5ft west swell, with a period of 10 seconds and a moderate wave energy (395). The wind is light and variable from the southwest, which is basically glassy across the break. It’s a beginner-friendly size, so it won't be too hectic, but the crowds are often here, so don't expect it to yourself. Friday afternoon is a write-off though, as the wind shifts onshore.
Now for the long-range punt. Lookin’ way out, the morning of Saturday, July 18th, shows a pulse of 5ft swell from the SSW, but with a short period of 8 seconds, that’s just windswell. The combined energy rockets up to 491, but the wind is a light cross-on from the NNW, so it’ll be bumpy. The afternoon of the 18th pushes up to 8ft from the WSW with a massive combined energy of 992 and a 9-second period. That’s a lot of water moving, but it's still messy windswell with a cross-on breeze. The waves will be fat and roly. That’s expert territory only, and honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s a distant, promising but far from certain prospect.
The only real standout, if you can call it that, is that Friday morning splash. Don’t hold your breath for the second week – forecasts change, but right now it’s a long, blank run.
Rusty.
