The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this straight, folks. Rusty here, and I’ve got to be honest with you: the next couple of weeks at Gwithian are looking flat, messy, and frankly, a bit of a bust. We’re talking about a 16-day window, but the first good surf recommendation doesn’t pop up until the end of the month. The early days are all dribble and chop.
So, for the first week and a half, from the 15th right through to the 28th, it’s a long, dry spell. The swell is tiny, under 3ft, and the wind is all over the shop – cross-shore, onshore, just a right mess. The wave energy is weak, sitting in the 30s and 40s (combined energy). You’ll be chasing ankle-biters and fighting lumpy, cross-choppy conditions. Honestly, it’s not worth getting wet for. The water temp is around 63°, which is pretty average for this time of year, nothing special.
Now, after that long gap, we finally see something stirring on the 29th of July. The Wednesday morning session shows a bit of life. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the west, with a period of 6 seconds. That’s short-period windswell, so it’ll be a bit junky and fat, but the wind is a moderate cross-shore breeze, which is about as good as it gets for this spot under these conditions. The wave energy is moderate (137 combined energy). It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got.
Then, Thursday the 30th of July rolls in with a bit more size. The swell hits 5ft from the west, but it’s onshore wind, which will mess it up. The wind is onshore, so the waves will be washing out and choppy. The energy is moderate (182 combined energy). This is pushing the limit for a beginner, getting a bit too chunky for a learner.
So, the standout? It’s got to be the morning of the 29th of July. It’s the only window where the wind is half-decent and the swell has a bit of push. You’ll get some fun, if not perfect, 4ft waves. It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s the best on offer in a very lean forecast. The rest of the period is a write-off. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, though – it tends not to stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
