Table - best surf conditions forecast for Gwithian over the next 16 days.

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the Gwithian forecast. I’ll be honest with you, it’s a pretty tough stretch of charts ahead. We’ve got a long dry spell before anything remotely rideable shows up, so patience is the name of the game.

Right now and for the next couple of weeks, Gwithian is mostly a no-go. The first ten days are looking grim. Wednesday the 8th through to Sunday the 13th of July, there might be a little bump in the water, but the conditions are just plain poor – cross-shore and cross-onshore winds messing things up, or the swell is tiny and weak. The combined wave energy is barely ticking over, hovering in the low to mid hundreds (120 to 139), so there’s just no push. It’s frustrating, I know.

We do see a little glimmer on Friday the 10th with a clean, cross-offshore breeze and a waist-high 3ft to 3ft swell from the West to WNW. It’s “surfable but very ordinary” – you might get a few grovelly ones if you’re desperate, but nothing to write home about. The period is around 8 to 10 seconds, so it’s a mix of wind and ground swell. Saturday the 11th is similar, with a slight drop in swell.

Then from Monday the 13th onwards, the wind absolutely cranks offshore from the East, but the swell tanks. We’re talking knee-high 0.7ft to 1ft. By Wednesday the 15th, you’ve got a near gale blowing 31 mph offshore – that’s kite-surfing wind, not paddle-surfing waves. The energy is weak (81 down to 48). For a week straight, it’s either too small or blown out.

The only real standout is way out on Thursday the 23rd of July. A sudden spike of 7ft swell from the North, with a short 6-second period, hits the charts. The combined energy jumps to 406, which is a big number. Offshore winds from the SSE should keep it clean. But that 6-second period is super short-period wind swell, meaning it’ll be lumpy and crumbly, and at 7ft, that’s expert territory – way too much for beginners. It’s a long way off, so treat it as a promising but uncertain prospect. If it comes together, it could be a proper session for the crew on bigger boards, but don’t hold your breath just yet.

So, to sum it up: the first twelve days are mostly a write-off. The best bet on the entire run is that Thursday the 23rd. Before that, you’re better off doing something else. Surf’s been quiet, but it tends not to stay this way forever.

Rusty.
