The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be straight with you – the outlook for Gwithian over the next couple of weeks is a real tale of two halves. We’ve got a long, flat, and frustrating stretch ahead before things finally wake up. You’ll need some patience.
Right now, and for the next week and a half, it’s grim. From Thursday the 16th all the way through to Tuesday the 29th of July, we’re looking at a solid 13-day run of poor surf. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 4ft, and the period is short, so there’s just no power behind it. The winds are a mess too, mostly cross or cross-onshore, keeping the surface chopped up and messy. The combined swell energy is weak, struggling to get into triple digits, and the wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions.” It’s a tough window for a paddle.
Finally, on Wednesday the 30th of July, we get a glimmer of hope. The morning shows a bit of life with a 3ft swell from the W, a 6-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the SE. The combined energy hits 100 – just barely into the moderate range. The afternoon is where it gets interesting. The swell picks up to 5ft, still from the W, and the wind goes glassy. That’s the standout moment. The water temp is about 63°F, which is just a touch above the norm for this time of year, so nothing wild.
Now, getting into the first week of August, the 31st of July brings a bigger, more powerful swell. The morning sees 6ft from the W with a 12-second period, which is a proper groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 800 – that’s strong. But, and it’s a big but, the wind is a fresh cross-onshore from the WSW, making it choppy and lumpy. The afternoon stays similar, with 5ft swell and the same messy wind. This is expert territory; the size and power are real, but the conditions are scruffy. It’s a setup that might actually be more interesting for kite surfing than a clean paddle session.
The 31st of July keeps the size up around 6ft, but the wind remains a problem, swinging cross and staying fresh. So, while the ocean has finally woken up, the quality is still poor. The best bet in this whole 16-day window is the glassy afternoon on the 30th of July. It’s the only time the stars align for a clean, surfable wave, even if it’s not massive.
Rusty.
