Right, grab a coffee and listen up, it’s Rusty. I’ve had a good look at what’s coming our way for Gwithian, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. We’re looking at a frustrating 16-day outlook with a lot of wind-affected and messy conditions. The water temperature is sitting at a pretty average 61°F for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The real problem is the wind. For the first week, we’ve got a constant onshore or cross-onshore breeze, mostly from the west and northwest, that’s just going to chop everything up. The swell is small, mostly around the 2ft to 3ft from the west-northwest, with low energy levels most days (around 60-140 combined energy). Tuesday the 8th of July morning will give us a glimpse of hope – we get a very light, glassy wind from the north-northeast. The swell will be tiny at 2ft, and the energy is weak (87), but it will be clean. That’s the closest we get to a decent option in the first week, but it’s only for total beginners and shortboards on a log. The rest of that week is a write-off.
The second week gets a bit more interesting, but it’s not clean. Around Sunday the 13th of July, we finally get some cross-offshore winds from the east-northeast, which cleans up the surface, but the swell drops off again. The best day in the whole run looks to be Wednesday morning, July 16th. We’ve got a moderate west-northwest swell around 2ft, but a very long 13-second period, which is proper groundswell. The combined energy is moderate at 249. The problem is that it’s still onshore from the west-northwest, so expect bumpy conditions. It’s a tease.
On Monday, July 21st, we get a proper punch of energy – a 8ft swell from the west with a 10-second period and a massive combined energy of 2106. That’s strong wave energy. But don’t get excited. That day is a write-off for normal surfing. With a strong cross-onshore wind from the northwest hitting 25 mph, Gwithian is going to be a complete mess. This kind of setup is far more interesting for the kite surfers than anyone wanting a clean paddle. It’s a no-go for standard surfing.
Honestly, if you are a surfer, don’t waste your time for most of this period. The few days with surfable but ordinary conditions (like the 8th and 14th) are only worth a look if you’re desperate and on a foamie. This is a classic summer lull for the area; a blank run like this is more normal than you’d think. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s not looking good.
Rusty.
