The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for the next couple of weeks is a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch of nothing good to start, and then a bit of a pulse later on, but it comes with a lot of wind. Let’s walk through it.
We’re looking at Gwithian, and honestly, it’s a flat spell out of the gate. From Sunday the 19th right through the end of July, the swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and the wind is cross or onshore for most of it. The wave energy is weak, with readings between 18 and 96 (weak energy), and the period is short, around 5 to 8 seconds. It’s just not doing anything. The water temperature feels about normal for this time of year.
The only flicker of a mention comes on the 31st of July, Friday morning. A strong offshore breeze from the ESE, 25 mph, will clean the surface up completely, but it’s a brutal paddle out. The swell is only 3 ft from the WNW with a short 6-second period, and the combined energy is just 110 (weak to moderate). It’s a beautiful-looking wave, but you’ll be fighting the wind to get into it. Not a beginner’s day.
Then, as we roll into August, the swell picks up. On Sunday the 2nd of August, we’re looking at 5 ft from the west, but it’s a short 7-second period, and the wind is howling from the WSW at 25 mph, making it a strong cross-onshore, lumpy mess. The combined energy hits 206 (moderate), but the quality is poor. This setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
The standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Monday the 27th of July. The swell is 5 ft from the west, with a 9-second period, giving us a combined energy of 332 (moderate). The wind is from the NW at 9 mph, so it’s onshore but light. It’s not perfect, but it’s the biggest, most energetic swell in the whole window. It’s still a poor surf condition though, so don’t expect magic.
Overall, it’s a long wait for not much. The best advice is to keep an eye on the forecasts for the first week of August, but don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
