Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Gwithian over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a slow burner, and the first week is gonna test your patience. We’re not exactly firing on all cylinders.
The first real chance to get wet comes on Monday the 6th of July. It’s small stuff – about 3ft from the west with a short period around 8 seconds. The energy is weak, only around 104. But here’s the kicker, in the morning the wind is glassy, completely off, making it clean as a whistle. It’s not going to blow anyone away, but for a beginner spot that’s consistent, you could have a fun little slide to yourself if you’re early – just be aware it gets crowded here often.
The next notable window is Wednesday the 8th of July. Still small at 2ft, west swell, but the wind is light and coming from the east and northeast – that’s cross-offshore and clean. The energy is still low (83-88), so it’s ordinary. Not a standout, but the cleanest conditions of a pretty weak run.
We hit a big gap of nothing special until Monday the 13th of July. That morning a tiny 0.7ft groundswell (19-second period!) rolls in from the south-southwest with an offshore easterly wind. It’s clean, but with combined energy at just 71, that’s barely a ripple. The 19-second period means long waits between sets – more of a meditation session than a surf. Also, there are rain showers about.
Now, Tuesday the 14th of July morning picks up a little. A west swell at 3ft with a good 10-second period, and clean cross-offshore wind from the east-northeast. The combined energy is 168, which is moderate. It’s still not epic, but for this quiet stretch, it’s probably the best-looking surfable wave on offer.
Then we hit another lull of ordinary days until Friday the 17th of July. On Friday afternoon, the swell jumps to 7ft from the west, 8-second period, and energy spikes to 495. That’s strong! But the wind is onshore from the west-northwest at 12 mph. For a beach break, onshore wind on a 7ft wave means chop and closing out. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s in the second week, so take it as a promising but less certain prospect. Only experts should even think about it.
The best on offer, and I mean the *only* real stand out, is Monday the 6th of July morning. The glassy conditions make up for the lack of size. Get on it early for a clean, cruisy beginner session. After that, hold tight for the 17th – big but blown out – or keep an eye on the forecasts for that Tuesday the 14th morning window. It’s not going to stay this ordinary forever.
Rusty, signing off.
