The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Pors Ar Ville.
First thing you need to know – the water is sitting at 66°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a nice bonus, especially through the early sessions.
The next few days are a bit of a mixed bag. Wednesday morning the 19th has clean waves around 5ft from the WNW, but the energy is moderate (214) and period is a short 7 seconds, so the shape won't be anything special. The wind is a cross-off, but it’s a solid 16 mph breeze, so it’s going to be work. By the afternoon, the conditions drop right off. Thursday the 20th lifts the swell to a clean 7ft in the morning, with energy building to 589, period bumping up to 9 seconds, still cross-off from the W. This is the biggest, cleanest surf of the first few days, but the score is still “marginal” – meaning the tide or the shape might make you work for the good ones.
Friday morning the 21st is a real highlight for the early part of the run. You’ve got a clean 5ft WNW swell at 9 seconds, energy at 370, and the wind is a light 6 mph cross-off. That’s as glassy as it gets for this open spot. Get out there Friday morning if you can – the consistency is good and the wind will be right.
The weekend is a write-off. From Friday afternoon through to Sunday, the swell drops and the wind goes onshore or cross-on, with choppy, lumpy, or onshore junk. We’re looking at flat, weak waves for a solid gap until Wednesday the 26th.
That next real window starts on Wednesday the 26th. Morning brings a building 6ft swell from the WNW, with moderate energy (394) and a cross-off breeze from the south. Afternoon on Wednesday is better – 5ft, glassy conditions with a gentle wind, and the rating suggests it’s finally a good session. Thursday the 27th keeps the swell in the 4ft to 5ft range with clean cross-off winds, 9 second periods – solid, workable surf for advanced guys.
Now, if you’re looking for the standout, you’ve got to circle September 2nd, Wednesday morning. The swell is 7ft, direction ideal from the WNW, with a 9-second period and strong energy at 759. The wind is a moderate offshore breeze from the southwest. That’s the right wind for Pors Ar Ville. The water will still be comfortable and the quality looks genuinely excellent. This is an advanced-only session – 7ft is big for that reef and beach setup. The crowds are a possibility here on good days, so if you can stay local, be early.
There’s another bump on the 31st of August into the 1st of September with solid 8ft to 10ft WNW swell, but the winds are a strong cross-off and those are “marginal” conditions. The energy is huge (1652), with a long-period groundswell at 10 seconds, making it serious, big and powerful – only for experienced surfers who know the reefs and river mouths.
Overall, the best on offer is Friday morning the 21st for a clean, fun session, and the undisputed standout is Wednesday the 2nd of September for a proper, sizey, offshore swell. Don’t waste your time this weekend. Surf’s coming, but you’ve got to pick your windows.
Stay frothy,
Rusty.
