The Lowdown
Right, grab a coffee, let’s see what’s happening at Pors Ar Ville. This spot’s an exposed beach and reef setup that needs a solid WNW groundswell to really fire. The water’s sitting at a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, so you won’t need the thickest wetsuit.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st have some size – around 6.6 ft Thursday morning – but the wind is a messy cross-off or cross-shore, and the conditions are only rated as marginal. It’s surfable if you’re desperate, but it’s not clean. Saturday the 22nd through to the end of the following week is basically a write-off. The swell drops right off to below 3.3 ft, and for most of that stretch we’ve got onshore or cross-onshore winds blowing hard, making it lumpy and choppy. You’re looking at about a five-day gap of nothing worth paddling out for.
Now, the real standout is a week and a half away. Sunday the 30th of August is the best on offer. We’ve got a 9.8 ft swell rolling in from the WNW with a 10-second period – that’s a solid groundswell with proper energy (1608 combined energy). The wind goes light and glassy, almost nothing, with a slight air in the afternoon. This is going to be big, powerful, and clean. That size is strictly for experienced surfers only – over 8.2 ft, it’s expert territory. If you’ve got the skills, this is the session. The long period means the sets will be spaced out, making it easier to get out the back, but at a beach/reef mix, expect some straight walls on the takeoff.
The Saturday before, the 29th, is also decent with 6.6 ft to 7.2 ft and clean offshore wind, but the energy is lower (603-682) and it’s a step down in quality.
Into the first week of September, things get messy again. The 31st has some size and offshore wind but then gets blown out by a strong WSW breeze in the afternoon. Tuesday the 1st of September has a 6.2 ft swell but fresh cross-off winds, so it’s not going to be pretty. Wednesday the 2nd shows a promising 8.2 ft swell with moderate wind, but it’s rated as marginal. The long-range stuff on the 4th of September has a 9.8 ft swell but with a full onshore wind, so that’s a no-go.
Overall, if you can wait, the 30th of August is your golden window. The rest is either flat or blown out. Hang in there.
