The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for this little corner of the coast. We’ve only got one spot on the radar, Pors Ar Ville, so we’re all in on this one. There’s a bit of a flat spell to get through first, so don't be in a rush.
We start with a bit of a wait. The first few days are pretty lean. From Thursday the 20th through to Wednesday the 27th of August, it’s mostly small, weak, or messy. There are a couple of sessions with some waist to chest-high swell around, but the wind and quality are just off. The best of that early period is probably Thursday morning the 20th. You’ve got a solid 7 ft swell from the WNW, period of 9 seconds, and a moderate cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is moderate (589), but the forecast flags it as marginal due to tide. The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, so that’s nice. It’s not a standout, but it’s the only half-decent window before things drop off again.
Then we hit a proper lull. From Friday the 21st all the way through to Wednesday the 27th, the swell drops below 3 ft, the wind turns onshore or cross-on, and the energy readings are pitiful, mostly in the double digits or low triple digits. It’s a real dry spell, nothing worth paddling out for.
But hold onto your leggies, because Thursday the 27th afternoon is where things start to wake up. The swell pushes back up to 5 ft from the WNW, with a 10-second period and a gentle offshore breeze. The energy is solidly moderate (373), and conditions are flagged as good. It’s clean and lined up. This is the first proper window.
Friday the 28th morning keeps that 5 ft going with a moderate offshore, but the wind picks up hard in the afternoon, so morning is the call there.
Now, the real standout. Monday the 31st of August. This is the one you circle on the calendar. Morning session is looking firing: 8 ft of WNW groundswell with a very long 12-second period. The combined energy is massive at 1933 – that’s strong to very strong. You’ve got a moderate offshore wind cleaning it all up. This is big, powerful, and only for experienced surfers. It’s a point break and reef setup here, and with that long period, it’ll hold up beautifully, offering some proper walls. Crowds are possible here, so get in early. Afternoon drops a touch but stays big at 8 ft with an 11-second period and a cross-off breeze, still excellent for the experienced crew.
After that, into Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd of September, the swell backs off to the 4-5 ft range with light cross-shore winds. It’s rideable, cleanish, but nothing special. By Thursday the 3rd and Friday the 4th, it fades back to small, weak surf below 3 ft. The energy drops to the double digits again, and it’s game over for the forecast period.
So, bottom line: suffer through the first week. Thursday the 27th afternoon is your first decent paddle. But the absolute standout is Monday the 31st of August. If you’re experienced and you want a proper session, that’s the day. It’s big, clean, and powerful.
Stay stoked.
Rusty.
