The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Pors Ar Ville over the next couple of weeks. I've got the charts, and I've got to be straight with you – it's a pretty bleak run for a decent wave. There’s a long stretch of poor conditions, especially in that first week and into the second. But hold on, right at the tail end of the forecast window, things start stirring.
We kick off Thursday the 16th with rain showers and wind hammering straight onshore – a tiny 1.6ft swell from the NE mixing with a stiff breeze. That's a write-off. This frustrating pattern carries on for days. Friday the 17th through to Sunday the 26th is just a long, drawn-out stretch of tiny, wobbly surf. We're talking flat to 2ft at best, and most of the time the wind is on it or cross-onshore. The energy levels are pathetically low, often dipping down to 14 or 20 in the combined energy (that's next to nothing). On Monday the 20th there's a faint 0.7ft WNW groundswell with a long period of 12 seconds, but with a moderate onshore wind ruining it, it's a no-go; the shape will be all over the place. It's a tough watch for a stretch of about 10 days, so you're looking for things to fix around the house.
Now, there's a bit of a change late on. Sunday the 26th of July sees a bit of a bump in the wind; we've got a strong breeze from the West at 25 mph, but it's actually cross-offshore. The wave height is still only around 1.6ft to 2ft, but it's clean. The combined energy climbs to 90, which is still on the weak side, but at least it's rideable for a longboard or a foiler if you're desperate. The swell direction settles into the WNW, which is the optimum direction for the place.
Then the real news comes in around the 29th of July. Wednesday the 29th sees a pulse of swell hitting the 6ft to 6.2ft mark from the WNW. The combined swell energy bumps up into the strong range – around 483 to 499 – so there's some proper push behind it. Now, the catch here is that the wind is a moderate cross-onshore from the north, which will chop it up a bit. This is solidly in the expert-only territory as it’s over 5ft, and with poor conditions forecast, it could be a messy, challenging day. Still, there’s a real change in the ocean’s mood.
But really, the standout window, if you can be patient, is the 30th of July. Thursday morning is where it’s at. We've still got a nice 4.9ft swell from the WNW, with a gentle cross-shore breeze and light cross-chop. The energy is still strong at 368. It won't be perfect, glassy, but it's the best on offer in this forecast. The period is 9 seconds, so it's a fresh local windswell mix, best handled on the beach and reef setup here. After that, it drops off again into marginal surf. So there’s one morning to pencil in, lads. It’s a long way off, so don't book the day off work yet, but keep an eye on it.
That's the story from me.
