The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a tricky 16-day stretch ahead for Llangennith. Let’s be real – this isn’t one for the highlight reel. The water is sitting at 69°F which is a good 8°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a weird one—definitely not your typical August feel.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th bring onshore wind and poor surf conditions, with small swell (3ft to 5ft from the WSW) and weak energy (60 to 569). Friday the 21st through Monday the 24th is mostly flat or tiny—0.3ft to 2ft—with the odd glassy moment on Monday afternoon, but nowhere near enough to paddle for. Tuesday the 25th is flat too, with a bit of clean but no swell.
Then we get a little glimmer late in the month. On Wednesday the 26th, there’s a glassy morning with 4ft WSW swell at 8 seconds. The energy is moderate (169) but the wind is glassy—that’s a rare treat. The surf is very ordinary, but it’s the cleanest you’ll see. That afternoon the wind swings onshore and the swell bumps to 5ft, but it’s lumpy.
After that, it’s a mixed bag of cross-shore and onshore junk through the end of August and into early September. The standout moment comes on Monday the 31st of August afternoon: 6ft of WSW swell, 10-second period, and strong energy (627). But the wind is onshore and fresh, so it’s a messy, choppy mess. Still, for the experienced surfer, that’s the biggest wave of the window. Not clean, but it’s something.
The first week of September looks scrappy again. Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd offer small windows of cleaner conditions—Wednesday morning has light cross-shore wind and 5ft W swell (283 energy)—but it’s marginal. Thursday the 3rd fades back to small and onshore.
So the honest truth? There’s no true standout. Focus on Wednesday the 26th morning for the glassy, clean 4ft WSW swell if you’re desperate for a paddle. Otherwise, Monday the 31st afternoon has the size but the wind will chop it up. Don’t expect much else.
Rusty.
