The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Llangennith over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half is looking pretty flat. We’re talking about a real dry spell from now until the 24th of July. The swell is tiny, mostly under 1 ft, and the combined wave energy is weak, barely cracking 30 (30) at its best. It’s just not worth paddling out for. There are a few glassy mornings, like the 14th and 18th, but with no waves to speak of, it’s a complete write-off for surfing. You’d be better off checking the tide pools.
Then, around the 25th of July, we finally see a pulse of life. The swell picks up to 3 ft from the WSW, but the period is a short, weak 5 to 6 seconds. The combined energy is still low to moderate, hitting 55 (55) on the morning of the 25th. Unfortunately, the wind is a mess – cross-onshore and choppy. The morning of the 25th is the only real window, with a clean-looking cross-offshore breeze, but the waves are still just “surfable but very ordinary.” It’s not a standout, just a hint that the ocean is waking up.
The real event, if you’ve got patience, is brewing for the end of the month. From the 27th of July, the swell bumps up to 4 ft from the WSW, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, hitting 167 (167) on the morning of the 27th. But the wind is a problem – a fresh breeze from the WNW, which is cross-onshore, making it lumpy. The 28th of July morning looks a little more manageable with a 3 ft swell and lighter wind, but it’s still onshore.
The best call of the whole run? Honestly, it’s a tough sell. The 25th of July morning is the only time the wind and waves even sort of line up. The swell is 3 ft from the WSW, and with that light, clean cross-off breeze from the NNE, it’ll be the most surfable we’ve seen in weeks. But don’t expect perfection – it’s a beach break, the period is short, and the energy is low (55). For a beginner, this is actually a fun, small day. Just don’t expect barrels.
Overall, this is a classic summer flat spell for Llangennith. The ocean is taking a long nap, and the forecasts can change, but for now, the best advice is to keep the board in the car and wait for the 25th morning.
Rusty.
