The Lowdown
Right, let’s talk about this spell in the water. For a start, the ocean is unseasonably warm, about 4° above normal, so you’ll be shedding the thick rubber. But for the surf? It’s a slow start.
We’ve got a big gap with nothing worthwhile until Friday morning, the 28th of August. That morning, a 1.7m swell pushes in from the SW with a period around 9 seconds, and the combined energy is building to (468). The wind is out of the SSE at 15 km/h, blowing cross-offshore, so the waves will be clean. Llangennith likes a W swell, but that SW swell will still wrap in a bit. This is the best bet in the whole 16-day window. After that morning, the wind swings onshore Friday afternoon and stays that way through the weekend. Saturday the 29th sees the swell jump to 1.9m and even 2.2m, but with strong onshore winds from the WNW at 35 km/h, it’s going to be blown out and messy. That kind of size with those winds is only for the die-hard experts, if anyone at all.
Into the second week, we see a pattern of onshore wind and lumpy, choppy conditions. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st have some chest-high swell around the 1.6m mark, but the wind is either cross-onshore or onshore, making it ragged. By Tuesday the 1st of September, it’s down to small waves, with combined energy below 100. There’s a slight return on Friday the 4th of September afternoon with a 1.3m SW swell and (117) energy, but again, onshore wind ruins it. Saturday the 5th of September brings a 1.6m WSW swell with (284) energy, but fresh cross-onshore winds at 30 km/h will have you thinking about a kite instead of a surfboard. After that, it’s back to small, wind-affected slop.
The one and only standout is Friday morning, the 28th of August. It’s the only time the winds are clean, with a decent 1.7m swell. It’s borderline for beginners but doable if you’re confident. For the rest, it’s a lot of waiting and watching.
Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it can change, but right now, we’re in a lean patch.
