The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Fall Bay is serving up through the rest of July and into the first week of August.

Honestly, the outlook is a tough one for us right now. We’re staring down a long, dry spell with barely a ripple. For the next week and a half, from Thursday the 23rd right through to the morning of Sunday the 2nd of August, it’s flat. The swell is non-existent or just tiny, weak pulses, and the combined energy barely registers (often under 100). There’s just nothing to get excited about.

The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is a solid 8° warmer than usual for this time of year. It feels like a bath out there, but without any waves to enjoy it, it’s a bit of a tease.

The first real sign of life comes on the morning of Sunday, the 2nd of August. We’ll see a solid pulse of WSW groundswell push in at 7ft, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 614 (moderate wave energy), which is a serious wake-up call. The wind is light and offshore from the NNW, so it should be clean. But, at over 8ft, this is going to be a beast for experts only. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit of a lumpy, close-out affair at the beach, but for a reef like Fall Bay, it could offer some heavy, powerful wedges. This is the one standout, but it’s a long way off and the forecast is less certain.

Monday the 3rd of August sees the swell peak even bigger, hitting 10ft on the morning with a combined energy of 1071 (strong wave energy), but the wind swings around to a cross-onshore ESE breeze, turning it into a choppy, messy mess. That’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day. The swell slowly fades through the rest of the week, dropping back to 5ft by Tuesday afternoon and smaller from there, with the wind staying mostly cross or cross-off. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.

So, the bottom line: if you’ve got a boat and nerves of steel, mark the 2nd of August. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for a brief, powerful window.

Rusty.
