The Lowdown
Right, folks. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Rhossili.
First off, the honest truth: the next week and a bit is a write-off. We’re looking at a solid stretch of flat, weak, or blown-out junk from now until the 7th of August. There’s a lot of small, short-period windswell, mostly cross-on or onshore, and the energy is just not there. The water is a balmy 68.4°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the sunbathing is good, but the surfing? Not for the first week.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Tuesday, the 4th of August. A pulse of swell arrives, but it’s hammered by a fresh cross-onshore breeze. The waves are bumpy and lumpy, with a combined energy of 555 (moderate), but the quality is poor. It’s a frustrating tease.
We get a few more days of marginal conditions on the 5th and 6th, with a bit more size—up to 6.9 ft—but that persistent cross-onshore wind keeps it choppy. Not worth paddling out for.
Then, finally, the standout. Look at the morning of Saturday, the 8th of August. This is the one to circle on the calendar. Rhossili is looking at a solid 8.2 ft swell from the southwest, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a decent groundswell. The combined energy jumps to 1065 (strong), and here’s the real kicker: the wind is glassy, with a slight air from the north-northeast. That means clean, open faces. It’s going to be a big day, and at that size, it’s definitely one for the experienced crew. Beginners will be out of their depth. The swell direction (SW) is a good match for the break’s optimum (W), so expect it to line up well.
The afternoon on the 8th drops off a bit in size and goes onshore, but that morning session is the best on offer across the entire 16-day window. After that, it fades back into small and weak again.
So, to sum it up: suffer through the flat spell, and be ready to go for a dawn patrol on the 8th of August. That’s your golden window.
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Warm (max 20°C on Tue afternoon, min 13°C on Sun night). Winds decreasing (fresh winds from the NW on Sun morning, calm by Tue night). | Days 4-6 Weather SummaryMostly dry. Warm (max 22°C on Wed morning, min 13°C on Thu night).
