The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day outlook for our corner of the coast is a bit of a challenge. I’ve looked over the numbers, and honestly, the surf is virtually non-existent for the entire forecast period. We’re looking at a long, flat run with no real swell to speak of. The only spot on the radar is Maenporth, and even it’s a tough sell.
We start off on Sunday, July 19th, with next to nothing. The swell is a pathetic 0.3ft from the south, with a combined energy of just 4 (weak). The wind is onshore from the SE at 12 mph, so it’s a write-off. That sets the tone for the whole first week. Monday through to the following weekend, the swell height barely nudges above 1ft, and the energy values are all in the single digits or low teens. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual there.
There is a brief moment on Thursday, July 23rd, where Maenporth sees a 2ft swell from the east. The combined energy hits 23 (still weak), and the wind turns light and cross-offshore from the NNE at 3 mph in the afternoon, leaving it clean. But honestly, with a period of 5 seconds, it’s just not going to have any push. It’s a flatter-than-a-pancake day for most.
The second week, from July 25th onwards, is even more barren. Good winds – mostly offshore or cross-offshore from the NW – but there’s simply no swell to groom. The energy values are zero or near-zero for days on end. By the time we get to the end of July and into the first week of August, the wind picks up strong from the east on the 31st, making a mess of things, but it doesn’t matter because there’s still no wave energy.
So, here’s the bottom line: there is no standout session. There is no best day. The entire 16-day window is a flat spell. If you’re desperate for a splash, the most hopeful window is that Thursday afternoon, July 23rd, at Maenporth. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but it’s inconsistent and often crowded. With a 2ft wave from the east and clean conditions, you might get a knee-high ripple. For the rest of it, the board stays in the van. This is a blank run, and it’s more normal for this area to have these quiet spells in summer. Forecasts can change, but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
