Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Maenporth over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this is a proper bleak run. We’re looking at a solid stretch of nothing, with the first real hint of a wave not showing up until Wednesday the 15th of July. That’s a whole week of flat, poor conditions from now until then. It’s one of those periods where you’d be better off checking the kite forecast than waxing a board.
Let’s run through the grim stuff first. From Tuesday the 7th all the way through to Sunday the 12th, it’s tiny, onshore, and just not worth a look. Swell heights are barely a ripple, all below 3 ft, and the wind is coming straight out of the east, making a mess of things. The water temp is sitting at a pretty average 62 °F, nothing unusual there for this time of year.
Then from Sunday the 12th onwards, things actually get worse before they get better. The swell starts to crank up, but with it comes a brutal easterly wind. By Monday the 13th of July, we’re seeing 10 ft to 12 ft of east swell, but the wind is screaming at 31 mph from the east, which means it's completely blown out. The combined energy hits some big numbers (1482!), but that’s just raw, messy power. This is strictly for the kites and windsurfers – paddle surfing would be a waste of energy. The period is short too, around 8 seconds, so it’s all wind-chop.
Now, here’s the only chance we get, and it’s a long shot. Wednesday the 15th of July morning is your best bet. We’ve got a 7 ft east swell with a 7-second period. The key here is the wind – it goes glassy, coming from the WNW, and it’s clean. The water temp anomaly is normal, but that glassy window makes it the standout. The combined energy is moderate (539), suggesting there’s some push. But remember, this is a short-period swell hitting a sheltered spot like Maenporth, so it’ll be a bit fat and maybe a bit straight, but it’s surfable. It’s inconsistent and often crowded, so don’t expect to have it to yourself. For a beginner, 7 ft is getting a bit much, so leave this one for the intermediates.
Thursday the 16th of July morning holds on a little – 5 ft east swell with offshore winds from the NW – but it’s not as clean. After that, we’re back to tiny, weak dribble right through to the end of the forecast.
So, to sum it up: it’s a long, flat wait, then a brief window on the morning of the 15th where the stars almost align. If you’re keen, that’s your only real shot. Keep an eye on it.
Rusty.
