The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Maenporth over the next couple of weeks. I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s a tough watch. The forecast shows a long, dry spell with nothing worth wetting a wetsuit for. The first real surf recommendation doesn’t kick in until the 23rd, and even then, it’s a no-go. We’re looking at a run of poor surf conditions right through until the end of the period.
The water temperature here is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The first few days, from the 20th through to the 22nd, are flat. Tiny 0.7ft swells from the SSW, with a very long period around 14-15 seconds, but the combined energy is weak (between 21-27). The wind is offshore or clean, but with nothing to push, it’s a total non-starter.
From the 23rd, we see a bit of a pulse. On the 23rd afternoon, the swell bumps up to 3ft from the ESE, but the period is a short 5 seconds. The combined energy is still weak (97). The wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy. It’s still poor surf.
Then the 24th brings a bigger, lumpier mess. The morning sees 6ft from the ESE with a 6-second period, and the combined energy is moderate (245). The afternoon gets worse: 8ft from the east, 7-second period, and a combined energy of 531 (moderate). The wind is a strong cross-onshore, making it messy and lumpy. This is only for the experienced, and the quality is poor.
The 25th is a write-off with onshore winds. The 26th brings another pulse of 7ft from the SW, but with a short 8-second period and a strong cross-onshore wind. The combined energy is 568 (moderate). It’s lumpy and messy.
The rest of the run into September is a mix of small, weak swells and strong winds. The 30th of August has a 7ft-7ft WSW swell, but the period is short (8 seconds). The combined energy is moderate (550-589), but the wind is mostly cross-off or cross-onshore.
From the 31st through to the 4th of September, the swell drops back to tiny 0.3ft-0.7ft. The winds are offshore or clean, so the water will be glassy, but there’s no surf to speak of. The combined energy is weak (2-39). The periods are long (14-19 seconds), which is a groundswell, but it’s just not wrapping in.
The honest truth is there’s no standout session here. The entire 16-day window is a blank. The only time the swell gets to a size that’s rideable is on the 24th, 26th, and 30th of August, but the wind and short periods ruin it. The consistency is rated as “inconsistent,” which is the story here. It’s a poor run, but that’s the hand we’re dealt. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d keep the board in the shed.
