The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real about what we’re looking at for this stretch. The only spot on the menu is Maenporth, and I gotta tell you, it's a tough run ahead. This is a sheltered little nook that needs the right angle, and we just aren't getting it for most of the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water temp at Maenporth. Not much data on the anomaly here, so I’d say it’s feeling pretty standard for the time of year. Nothing wild.
The outlook from now, Friday the 21st of August, is a write-off for a good long while. We’re talking days of tiny, weak swell – mostly around 0.7 ft or so from the SSW with a long period, but with zero energy behind it. The combined energy is barely registering (27). There’s some light wind, but it’s wrong for this spot. A long period groundswell (13-15 seconds) means it might wrap in, but with that little height, it’s not gonna do anything. Don’t even bother looking until we get deep into the following week. There’s a solid gap of almost no surf on offer for the first several days.
Things get a bit more interesting, but not really better, from Monday the 24th. The wind cranks up from the east, hitting 25 mph, and the swell bumps up. We see a jump in combined energy (158 then 330) with a short, messy period of 6 seconds from the ESE. But it’s a strong cross-onshore and messy. Wave heights climb to 5 ft then 7 ft, but it’s blown out, choppy, and poor. This pattern of onshore wind and messy short-period windswell dominates through the 27th.
The one glimmer is the 28th of August. The wind finally swings offshore from the NW at 22 mph. The swell comes up to 6 ft from the WSW with a 7-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 295. The morning is described as “fresh offshore and clean,” but the surf quality is still flagged as poor. The afternoon of the 28th is the only time we get a score of 1 out of 10. The wind is still offshore (WNW, 19 mph), the swell hits 7 ft from the WSW, and the combined energy jumps to 509. It's described as "fresh offshore and clean" but “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.”
The 29th of August has better numbers on paper – 8 ft from the WSW (8 seconds) and a combined energy of 727 – but it’s still rated as poor surf conditions. That’s a lot of wind energy (cross-off from W at 16 mph) and it’s likely just too lumpy and straight for this beach setup.
After that, it all fades back into the gutter. The first week of September is tiny again, with small 2 ft to 3 ft swells and wrong winds. A bit of glassy offshore on the morning of the 3rd of September, but the swell is back to a pathetic 0.7 ft.
The verdict? Honestly, there are no standouts here. The only day that could hold a tiny bit of hope is the afternoon of Friday the 28th of August. You’ll get some clean, offshore conditions and a 7 ft swell with moderate energy (509). But this is a sheltered, inconsistent beginner spot that rarely fires. With that size, if it breaks, it’ll be solid, but the period is short. It’s more of a last resort than a destination. The rest of this 16-day run is a bust for surf at Maenporth.
Rusty.
