The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – this is a tough one to write. We're looking at Maenporth and, to be honest, the next sixteen days are a real struggle. There’s nothing in the forecast that’s worth paddling out for, so we’re going to walk through the dead zone together.
The outlook starts with a bit of a tease. Monday the 13th has some swell, with waves around 8 feet from the east, but the wind is a messy cross-on at 19 mph, making it lumpy and pretty poor. The combined energy is moderate, sitting at 769, but with the short period of 8 seconds and onshore wind, it’s a pass. The water is currently 66°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year – a bit of a weird anomaly.
From there, it’s a grim stretch. Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th offer small, weak waves with cross-onshore winds. The energy drops off a cliff, getting down to 93 and 145. Thursday the 16th gives us a brief moment of glassy conditions in the afternoon, but the swell is only 4 feet with a weak 6-second period – it’s flat and gutless. The next week and a half are a write-off. We see a lot of days with energy readings in the single digits or teens. Friday the 17th has a clean offshore wind in the afternoon, but the swell is a pathetic 2 feet. It’s not even worth getting the board off the roof rack.
The real action doesn’t show up until Friday the 24th of July. That’s a full week and a half of flat, blown-out, or tiny surf. On the 24th, we finally get a pulse of swell back – 6 feet from the southwest. The wind is a cross-off, so it’ll be clean, and the energy is back up to a solid 348. The period is short at 7 seconds, so it won’t be the best shape, but it’s the only window of hope. Saturday the 25th holds onto similar waves, 5 feet from the west-southwest, with clean cross-off winds and energy around 200. For a beginner, the 5 to 6 foot range is probably too much, so this is for the more experienced crew. For the rest of the period after that, it’s back to tiny, wind-affected junk.
So, there’s nothing to recommend. The only flicker of life is on the 24th and 25th, but it’s a long way off and not a true standout. When it’s this bleak, it’s usually a sign that the pattern is about to change, but for now, we’re in a dry spell. Hang tight.
Rusty.
