The Lowdown
Right then, folks. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin' for our little slice of coast.
To be straight with you, the next ten days or so are a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with the wind being a real pain in the backside. It’s a tough run for the paddle crew. There’s a glimmer of hope right at the end of the month, but patience is the name of the game.
The first real highlight doesn't arrive until Sunday, the 30th of August. On the Sunday afternoon, Maenporth is looking like it could be the one. The wind is set to go light and cross-off, which is a massive tick for clean, peeling walls. The swell will be pushing a solid 10 ft from the SW, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy of all that swell is a strong 1001. That’s a lot of juice, proper powerful. However, that size is well into the “experts only” territory. For the rest of us, it’ll be a show. The water temperature is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, so you might get away with a thinner suit.
Before that, on Thursday, the 27th of August, there’s a big pulse of energy – 10 ft swell from the SSW with a combined energy of 1068 – but the wind is a messy cross-shore and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. The forecast does say it’s “clean” on the Thursday afternoon with a cross-off wind, but it’s also fresh, so the surface won’t be glassy. It’s a solid option for the brave, but it’s not the stand-out.
After that Sunday peak, the following week gets smaller and windier again. A few clean windows pop up, like the Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September, but the swell is tiny and the wind is fresh. There’s a marginal-looking morning on the 4th of September, with a 6 ft swell and moderate cross-off wind, but it’s classified as “marginal”.
So, the call is this: if you’re an experienced surfer, the Sunday afternoon of the 30th of August is the clear winner. Big, clean, powerful SW swell at Maenporth. For everyone else, it’s a waiting game. The rest of the period is a write-off for quality waves.
Rusty.
