The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – if you’re looking for waves in the Maenporth area over the next couple of weeks, you’re in for a bit of a dry spell. The truth is, the surf forecast is flat for the entire 16-day window. Every single day and session is showing “poor surf conditions” with a score of zero, and most of the swell heights are barely a whisper. The combined wave energy is almost non-existent, with the highest reading being just 26 (weak energy) on Sunday the 19th, and most days sitting below 10. It’s going to be a long, quiet stretch.
Let’s start with the first whisper of anything. Saturday 18th July – Maenporth is showing a tiny 0.3ft swell from the SW with a period of 11 seconds. Sounds cruisy, but the energy is only 5 (weak). The water temp is sitting at 66°F, which is a whopping 4°F warmer than normal – that’s a notable anomaly, so the water is feeling much warmer than usual for this time of year. The wind is from the north at 9 mph, cross-off, keeping the surface clean. But honestly, with that height, you’re looking at a dribble, not a wave. Not worth paddling out for.
Moving into Sunday 19th July – the swell picks up a touch, with a 2ft wave from the ESE in the morning, but the period is a short 4 seconds. That’s weak, wind-driven junk. The wind is 16 mph onshore from the SE, so it’s messy. The afternoon is similar with 2ft and 4-second period, cross-on wind at 9 mph from the ESE. Energy hits 26, but it’s still poor quality. Not a session you’d remember.
Monday 20th July – it drops back to 1.0ft in the morning, then 0.7ft in the afternoon. The afternoon goes glassy with a 0 from the south, but the swell is absolutely tiny. Period is 4 seconds. The energy is 1. You’d need a pond to surf that.
The rest of the week is more of the same. Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd see 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with periods ranging from 4 to 16 seconds. The long-period 16-second groundswell on Wednesday morning sounds promising, but at 0.3ft? That’s just a long-period bump. The energy is 5 or less. The wind is cross-off to offshore through much of this period, so the surface is clean, but there’s nothing to ride.
From Thursday 24th July all the way through to Sunday 2nd August, the swell heights flatline. Most days show 0.3ft or simply a dash (“-“) for swell height, with energy values dropping to zero. The wind is consistently cross-off or offshore, keeping the ocean looking like a mirror, but there’s literally no surf. The water temperature anomaly isn’t recorded for most of these days, so we can’t say much about that.
The standout? There isn’t one. Not a single day offers anything worth waxing a board for. The best you could hope for is the Sunday 19th afternoon with 2ft and 26 energy, but with a 4-second period and cross-on wind, it’s just a lumpy mess. If you’re a kite surfer, the stronger breezes later in the week – like the 25 mph winds on Saturday 25th – might get you going, but for paddle surfing, it’s a bust.
So, what’s the takeaway? Maenporth is in a real flat spell. The breaks are inconsistent, and the forecast shows no signs of life. Sometimes that’s just how it goes in this area – a blank run is more normal than you’d hope. But don’t lose heart; forecasts can change, and it tends not to stay poor for long. Keep an eye on the horizon.
Rusty.
