The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up – this is a tough stretch for Maenporth. The next eight days are a write-off. From Wednesday the 19th of August right through to Wednesday the 26th, you’re looking at tiny leftovers and poor surf conditions. Wave heights mostly sit around 0.7 ft, with combined swell energy stuck between 6 and 71 (weak). A few glassy or offshore windows pop up – like Sunday afternoon the 23rd with a glassy NNE breeze and 1 ft – but there’s just no push. It’s frustrating, but that’s how it goes sometimes. The first real chance arrives on Thursday the 27th of August. The swell finally wakes up to 7 ft from the WSW, with a period of 11 seconds and combined energy ramping right up to 1002 (strong). That’s proper groundswell energy. Winds are light and cross-off from the WSW, so the setup looks clean. Maenporth is a sheltered, inconsistent beginner spot that rarely sees this kind of power – and when it does, the SSW optimum direction is close to what’s coming, so it should wrap in nicely. Just a heads-up: 7 ft is big for a break that’s mostly for beginners, and the long 11-second period means those sets will have some push, best handled by experienced surfers. Crowds can be an issue here, so expect a few locals sniffing around. Water temp is about average for the time of year. Friday the 28th sees a drop – morning offshore but only 0.3 ft, then a weak 4 ft S swell in the afternoon with a short 5-second period and just 71 energy. Not worth paddling out. Saturday the 29th has another pulse: 7 ft from the SW again, combined energy 557 (moderate), but there’s a risk of thunderstorms and winds are cross-off. The score is marginal for tide issues, so timing will be everything. Sunday the 30th is the last standout: 8 ft from the WSW with 782 energy (strong) and a fresh offshore NW wind. That’s clean and powerful – but again, over 8 ft is expert territory only, and the period is short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and fast. Monday the 31st drops right off to no surf reported. Tuesday the 1st of September is back to 0.3 ft, and Wednesday the 2nd sees a messy 8 ft WSW swell with a near gale SSW wind – that’s kite-surfing weather, not paddle. Thursday the 3rd is a write-off with strong cross-shore winds and only 0.7 ft. Best on offer: Thursday the 27th of August is the pick – 7 ft WSW groundswell with clean cross-off winds and strong energy. Sunday the 30th is a close second for experts who don’t mind shorter period and a bit of risk. Get it while it’s there – the forecast can always shift.
