The Lowdown
Alright, I’m Rusty, and I’ve got to be honest with you – the next 16 days at Maenporth are a real bummer. There’s a big, empty gap at the start, and the first chance to even talk about surf comes on Wednesday, July 15th, but it’s a total write-off. We’ve got a 4ft easterly swell, but the wind is a cross-on mess from the east at 15 mph, making it choppy and poor. The combined wave energy is only moderate, sitting around 141-179. It’s not worth your time.
That keeps up all week. Thursday the 16th, the swell drops to 3ft, and while we get a glassy moment in the afternoon, the energy is weak (84-76). The waves are just not there. Friday through the weekend into next week, the swell is tiny, mostly under 2ft, and the energy is pitiful. That period from the 18th to the 24th is a real dead zone; we’re looking at heights under 1ft and energy values of 2, 5, 9 – that’s weak energy, barely a ripple. Some days like the 20th and 22nd offer glassy conditions, but with no real swell, it’s a flat spell.
The next glimpse of any size comes on Monday, July 21st, but the swell is only 3ft at best, and the wind is onshore. By Wednesday, July 22nd, we get a bit of a pulse back to 4ft-5ft from the east, and the afternoon goes glassy, which is a tease. But the combined energy is still only moderate (129-160), and the quality is poor. It’s not what you’re looking for.
After that, the swell is gone again. We get a few clean, offshore days from the 24th onward, but the waves are laughable – 0.3ft, 1ft, 1ft. The energy is all in the single digits or low 30s. It’s a flat, clean lake. For a spot that’s already inconsistent and sheltered, this is a long blank run. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The only standout, if you can call it that, is the Thursday morning, July 24th, where we have a 0.3ft swell from the southwest with a 13-second period and glassy conditions. But that’s a long period for a tiny wave, and at Maenporth, a beach-and-reef setup, that long period will just make it break too straight. It’s more of a curiosity than a surf. Honestly, this stretch looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, given the clean but underpowered conditions.
Hang in there. Forecasts change, and it won’t be this flat forever.
