Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you. The outlook for Maenporth is a tough one to write. For a stretch here, it's pretty grim. The first recommendation comes in on Friday the 10th of July, but even then, it's a struggle. We've got a long gap from the start of the period right up until that Friday morning with absolutely no surf on offer. Those first few days are dead flat, so don't even bother.
So, Friday the 10th of July rolls around and we get a little pulse. It's a weak, short-period easterly swell, only 0.7m (2ft), with a period of 4 seconds. The wind is a light cross-onshore, so it's not gonna be pretty. The combined energy is weak at 21. It's surfable if you're desperate for a splash, but it's not what I'd call a good surf.
Things actually pick up in size but not in quality. Saturday the 11th of July has a bit more push, 1.3m (4ft) from the east, period 6 seconds. The combined energy climbs to a moderate 111. But again, we've got a cross-shore wind, so expect a bit of chop. Not a standout.
The middle of the next week gets bigger but uglier. From Sunday the 12th through to Thursday the 16th of July, we see waves from 1.7m (6ft) up to a whopping 3.0m (10ft) on the Thursday morning. The combined energy shoots up into the strong range, hitting 1356 on that Thursday. But here's the kicker: the wind is a fresh to strong cross-onshore the entire time. That's going to turn it into a lumpy, messy, wind-blown mess. For a sheltered spot like Maenporth, 3.0m (10ft) with a 40 km/h (25 mph) cross-onshore wind is a write-off. Honestly, that setup would be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Now, we do get a little window of hope. On Saturday the 18th of July, we get a tiny 0.5m (2ft) swell from the east-northeast, but the wind goes completely glassy in the afternoon. It's dead calm. The wave energy is weak at 34, so it's tiny, but it will be mirror-smooth. For a beginner, this is your chance to get out on a longboard and have a peaceful, clean session. It's hardly a standout, but it's the best the bay offers.
Later on, Monday the 20th of July morning looks better. A 0.7m (2ft) swell from the west-southwest with a period of 10 seconds and a clean offshore wind from the north-northwest. The energy is still moderate at 88. The waves will be clean and lined up a bit better thanks to the longer period. Tuesday the 21st also looks clean but smaller.
So, what's the best on offer? It's a toss-up between the dead glassy tiny waves on Saturday the 18th of July, and the clean offshore conditions on Monday the 20th of July. For the sheer joy of a glassy surface, I'd give the nod to that Saturday afternoon. It's a rare treat. But if you want a bit more size, the Monday morning is your best bet, but keep your expectations low. It's not a classic, but it's the best this forecast has to give.
Rusty.
