The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this stretch of coast is looking pretty flat and uninviting for the next couple of weeks. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the score is a big fat zero across the entire 16-day window. There’s no standout, no hidden gem, just a whole lot of nothing for surfers. The reality is, this is one of those blank runs that just happens sometimes around here. We’ll take it on the chin and hope the models change their tune.
Let’s start with the first few days. Friday the 21st, we’ve got a tiny 0.7ft of swell from the SSW, with a 13-second period, but the combined energy is only 27 – weak. It’s clean in the morning with a cross-offshore breeze, but honestly, you’re looking at close to nothing. The water is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a small comfort if you’re just having a dip.
Saturday the 22nd is worse. The wind swings cross-on, and the swell is still pitiful. By Sunday, it’s the same story – tiny waves and cross-onshore winds. The energy on Sunday afternoon bumps up to 134 (moderate), but it’s a 1ft lump with a short 12-second period, so it’s just messy and unrideable.
Moving into the next week, things get a bit bigger but not better. Monday the 24th sees a jump in size – 7ft in the morning and 8ft in the afternoon from the east. But the wind is a howling 25 mph cross-onshore, making it a total mess. The energy is strong (365 in the morning, 636 in the afternoon), but this is strictly for the kites. For a paddle surfer, it’s a write-off. Tuesday the 25th is still lumpy with fresh cross-onshore winds, and the east swell drops to 5ft. The energy is moderate at 242.
Wednesday the 26th – more cross-onshore winds, a 7ft swell from the SSW in the afternoon, and energy of 377. But the wind is 16 mph and cross-on, so it’s choppy and lumpy. Honestly, all signs point to this being a better setup for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Thursday the 27th offers a brief glimmer with a cross-offshore wind in the afternoon, but the swell is only 3ft and the energy is weak at 65. Not enough to get excited about. Friday the 28th morning has a bit more size at 6ft from the SSW, with a clean cross-off breeze and energy of 213 (moderate). If you’re desperate, you could probably find a close-out close to shore, but it’s not going to be a classic.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th sees a little more size – 5ft to 7ft – but the wind is cross-on or cross-shore, and the energy is moderate to strong (210 to 560). The wind keeps it messy, and the period is short (8 seconds), so the waves will be soft and crumbly. Again, this is kite territory.
From the 31st of August through to the 5th of September, the swell drops back to almost nothing. The 3rd of September Thursday morning is the closest thing to a reprieve we get: glassy conditions, 3ft of swell from the SSW with a 9-second period, and energy of 142 (moderate). The wind is offshore in the afternoon, too. But 3ft with a short period at a sheltered spot like Maenporth isn’t going to get the heart racing. The 5th of September Saturday afternoon is glassy again, but with a pathetic 0.7ft of swell.
Bottom line: no surf to speak of in the 16-day window. The breaks are inconsistent, and the conditions are poor. It’s a rare blank run, but it does happen. Keep an eye on the charts, because it tends not to stay this way for long.
Rusty.
