The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat on what Maenporth is serving up for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m looking at this run and it’s a tough one. For the first week, we’re stuck in a bit of a rut. The wind is mostly cross-on or cross-shore from the east or south, and that’s just messing with the surface. The waves are small, weak, and choppy. The combined swell energy is low, sitting between 61 and 100 (moderate), and it’s just not coming together. We’ve got a few days where the swell bumps up a bit – like Monday the 24th of August with a 7ft easterly swell, but it’s a short period (7 seconds) and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, so it’s lumpy and messy. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle. The water temperature is a touch warmer than normal at 65°, so at least the water’s pleasant.
Then we get a bit of a shift. From Thursday the 27th, the swell swings more southwest, and the energy jumps up. By Friday the 28th of August morning, we’ve got a 8ft SW swell with a period of 9 seconds, and the wind goes cross-offshore from the WSW. That’s the first real window of clean surf. The combined energy is strong (754), but the swell height is over 8ft, so this is one for the experts only. The break is a bit inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting for sets, but when they come, they’ll be solid. The wind goes strong on Friday afternoon, so you want to get out early.
After that, it drops off hard. The last week of the forecast is a sad affair. From Saturday the 29th of August all the way through to Sunday the 6th of September, the swell is tiny – mostly 0.3ft to 1ft – with very low energy (single digits). The wind is mostly cross-off or offshore, so the conditions are clean, but there’s just nothing to ride. The period on the 1st and 2nd of September is long (17-18 seconds), but with no height, it’s a flat, glassy lake. It’s a proper blank stretch, about 9 days of nothing.
The standout here is the Friday morning session on the 28th of August. It’s the only time the size, direction, and wind line up for a serious wave. The rest of the run is a write-off, I’m telling you. You’ll be waiting for a better forecast.
Rusty, signing off.
