The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks at Maenporth.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a desert for surf. There’s not a single recommended session in the entire stretch. The swell energy is just nowhere to be found, with the combined energy of all swells directed here barely scraping a 121 (moderate) on the 19th, and even then the quality is shot. Most of the time, the combined energy is a pathetic 2 to 16 (weak). You’re looking at a proper blank run here, which, for a spot this sheltered, is more normal than you’d hope.
Friday 17th July – Tiny 1ft easterly windswell with a short 6-second period. The wind is cross-off, but there’s just no power in the water. Combined energy is only 16 (weak). Not one for a paddle.
Saturday 18th July – Swell drops to a pathetic 0.3ft. The period stretches to 11 seconds, but there’s nothing to push. Clean, but flat. Combined energy is a measly 6 (weak).
Sunday 19th July – This is the closest we get to a pulse. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the east, but the period is a short 6 seconds, and it’s a cross-on breeze. The combined energy hits 121 (moderate), but the wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions”. It’ll be choppy and messy. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Monday 20th July – Back to nothing. 1.0ft and 0.7ft swells. The afternoon gets glassy, but there’s no wave to ride. Combined energy is 4 (weak) or less.
Tuesday 21st July – Even smaller. 1ft and 1.0ft with a 3-second period. Glassy again in the afternoon, but you’d be surfing ripples. Combined energy is 2 (weak) or less.
Wednesday 22nd July through Wednesday 29th July – A long stretch of flatness. Most days show 0.3ft of swell, with periods getting long (12 to 16 seconds) but absolutely no height. The winds are clean and often offshore, but you can’t surf clean air. Combined energy is consistently in the single digits (weak). There’s a period on the 29th afternoon where the swell data is a dash, meaning zero surf.
Thursday 30th July – A slight flicker: 3ft from the east, 5-second period. The wind goes offshore from the NNW, and the combined energy is 31 (weak). Still, “poor surf conditions” is the verdict. It’s a god-awful wave.
Friday 31st July – Drops back to 1.0ft. Offshore wind, but no energy. Combined energy is 3 (weak).
Saturday 1st August – 0.7ft. Clean, but flat. Combined energy is 2 (weak).
So there you have it. A solid 16 days of nothing worth waxing up for. If you’re desperate for a paddle, maybe the glassy spells on the 20th or 21st afternoons, but don’t expect a wave. This one’s a write-off. Forecasts can change, but for now, go find another hobby.
Rusty.
