The Lowdown
Right, I won't lie to you, it's been a quiet stretch and it's gonna stay that way for a while. We've got a real dry spell on our hands at Maenporth. The first week or so is pretty much a write-off for proper waves – you're looking at flat to tiny, ankle-slop type stuff with combined swell energy barely registering. Hold on to your hats for a pretty big gap before things finally start to grumble.
Here’s the deal: from now right through to the end of August, it’s a no-go. You'll be scratching your head looking at the water. There's a tiny bump on the 22nd afternoon with a 5ft swell from the east, but it's got a period of only 5 seconds – that's pure wind chop, not surfable. Then on the 23rd, we get a little more size, 4ft, but it's cross-onshore from the east and choppy. Not worth getting wet for.
Finally, after nearly two weeks of basically nothing, we get a sniff of something on Thursday the 27th of August. It’s not a world-beater, but it’s what we’ve got. The morning sees a clean 6ft swell from the WSW with a period of 7 seconds. The wind is gentle offshore from the NW, so it’ll be clean. Combined wave energy hits 282 – solid moderate. It's a beach break with a bit of a short period to it, so don't expect perfection, but it’s the first real sign of life.
The standout, and honestly the only one worth talking about, is Friday the 29th of August. We get a jump in size. On the morning it’s a powerful 8ft from the SW with 624 energy, and by the afternoon it tips over into a solid 12ft from the WSW (energy of 1769!). Wind is fresh from the west, so cross-offshore and clean. That's proper swell. For a beach break like Maenporth, though, that size and period (9 seconds) will be powerful and dumpy – this is strictly for experts only. Beginners, sit this one out. The water temperature is currently 66°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the rubber won't be needed.
To be honest, the 29th is the only window where it all comes together. After that, the 30th still has a 7ft from the WSW but the wind is howling at 25 mph, so it'll be messy and hard work.
So there you have it. A long, flat run, then a couple of days of rough-and-tumble towards the end of the month. Keep the board polished.
Rusty.
