The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get straight into it for Maenporth. We're looking at a pretty frustrating run ahead, with a big gap of nothing special before a couple of windows appear late in the game.
To start, the water's sitting at 66°, which is a solid 5° warmer than usual for this time of year – that's significant, and it almost feels like bath water right now. The downside is that for the first half of the outlook, the swell is pretty gutless and the wind is all wrong. We've got east winds blowing across the face, making things lumpy and choppy. The wave energy is weak, with combined energy readings barely getting into the low hundreds – 396 marks the highest early on, but that's paired with a short 7-second period and onshore wind, so it's a mess. For a beginner-friendly, sheltered spot like this, it's just not worth the paddle.
You'll see Thursday afternoon on the 16th goes glassy, but the swell is only 3ft from the east with a 6-second period, and the combined energy is a tiny 76. It's flat and slow, so no real push there. Then from Friday the 17th through most of the following week, we get into a long stretch where the swell drops right off – we're talking 0.7ft to 1ft for days. The waves are basically non-existent, and the wind, while often clean and offshore from the north, has nothing to work with. This is a dry spell for sure; a blank run of several days without a genuine recommendation.
However, things start looking up on Wednesday the 22nd. The morning is still a cross-on mess with 8ft at 7 seconds from the east and a solid 623 combined energy, but the afternoon is the standout. Wednesday afternoon the wind swings to a light north breeze, going cross-offshore, cleaning up that 8ft swell. It's still a short-period 7-second east swell, but for a sheltered break like this, that'll be pushing through with some punch. This is the best we get in the whole 16-day window. The energy is strong at 573.
Just be warned, at over 7ft, this is not for grommets – it's getting into expert territory. The swell direction is east, not the ideal south-southeast often preferred here, but with that clean, offshore wind, it'll be a fun afternoon if you can handle the size. Crowds here can be an issue, so be ready for company.
After that, it drops back down frustratingly quick. Thursday the 23rd is clean but tiny again, and by the end of the forecast we get a couple of 0.3ft pulses from the south with very long periods (12-16 seconds). That's all window dressing, unfortunately – no height means no ride. On the very last day, Tuesday the 28th, we see a late pulse of 7ft from the southwest, but it's accompanied by a cross-on wind and a lumpy, choppy forecast. It’s a tease.
So, if you're paddling out, circle Wednesday 22nd afternoon on your calendar – that's your one true shot. It's a special case, don't waste it.
Rusty.
