The Lowdown
Alright, grab your coffee. Rusty here. Let’s talk about Church Cove.
Look, I’m gonna be straight with you. The next two weeks are a tough watch for this stretch. We’re looking at a solid run of tiny, weak surf that’s barely going to get your fins wet. The numbers just aren’t there. From Thursday, 16 July, through to pretty much Friday, 24 July, we’ve got wave heights below 1 foot – basically flat. The combined swell energy is sitting below 100 (41 on Thursday dropping down to as low as 4) which is just sad. The water temp is running 65° right now, and that’s 4° warmer than usual for July, so it feels a bit tropical, but that’s about the only upside.
There are a few little spikes towards the end of the month, but nothing that’s going to get your heart racing. Saturday, 25 July sees a pulse of short-period 4 ft to 5 ft swell from the West, but it's rocking a period of only 6 seconds. That’s short and crumbly, and the cross-shore wind is going to make it lumpy. The energy jumps into the moderate range (155, then 182) but for Church Cove, a beach setup, short-period groundswell with a cross-shore breeze is more of a mess than a treat. You’d want long-period groundswell for shape here.
Sunday 26 July and Monday 27 July keep that 4 ft to 3 ft West swell but it’s cross-onshore and choppy. Not clean, not inviting. Tuesday 28 July drops off again. The only window that even raises an eyebrow is Thursday 30 July. We get a 3 ft South swell in the morning with a moderate offshore breeze from the NE – that’s clean. Combined energy only 65 (weak), but that NE wind is glassy, so you might find a little waist-high runner if you’re desperate. That afternoon, a jump to 5 ft from the SW with 269 energy, period of 8 seconds, but the file flags it as marginal due to tide or conditions.
Honestly, the whole stretch between 16 July and 30 July is basically a write-off. There’s a massive gap with no real surf. If you’re into kite surfing, those lumpy, windy days on the 25th and 26th might get you going, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a long wait. For the whole period, the best on offer is the morning of Thursday 30 July: 3 ft from the South, clean offshore wind, but it’s inconsistent, so you’ll be sitting there hoping. Hardly a standout, but it’s the only one with the wind playing nice.
Rusty.
