Alright, Rusty here again, looking at the outlook for Black Middens (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England). We’ve got a full 16-day window here, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: there’s no real surf to get excited about. Zero recommendations from the numbers, so this is a quiet patch, and that’s pretty standard for this river-mouth break in the summer.
Kicking off July 4th, we’ve got 0.3 of a foot from the NNE with a 6-second period and a combined energy of 10 – that’s basically flat. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, so it’s messy. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday… it stays at 0.1 to 0.2 feet, energy in the single digits. Not worth the drive.
We get a little twitch on Wednesday July 8th: a 1-foot north swell (0.3m – call it 1 foot) with a 9-second period and energy up to 23. Morning is clean with a light cross-offshore wind. Thursday July 9th is similar, with 2 feet from the north, 8-second period, energy at 38, and glassy in the morning. That’s your best shot – it’s clean, but the wave height is tiny. For a place like Black Middens, you need more push to work the river mouth.
Then it all fades again. Friday July 10th sees a 3-foot spike from the ESE on a 4-second period (wind chop) with 51 energy, but it’s a moderate cross-shore wind making it lumpy. That’s not surf, that’s washing machine. Later, on July 17th and 18th, we get a little more north swell: Friday morning looks clean with 1-foot from the NNE and offshore breezes; Saturday morning has 1 feet from the north, 9-second period, 31 energy, and clean winds. Still knee-high at best.
Water temp around here is about average for the season – nothing unusual.
Bottom line: this is a dead spell. Black Middens is inconsistent, and when it’s this small and weak, you’re better off staying on land. A blank run like this is more normal for the area in summer – it can turn around if a storm pushes in from the North Sea, but for now, it’s a total washout.
Rusty.
