Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Black Middens over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’ll be honest with ya – the start of this run is a tough one. We’ve got a long, flat spell ahead. From Sunday the 5th of July through until at least the 15th, there’s just nothing doing. Tiny little slops at 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft, mostly from the north, with the combined energy barely ticking over (1 to 39). The wind is all over the place too, mostly cross or cross-off, and it’s just not worth wetting a wetsuit. This is a proper blank patch for the area, so don’t hold your breath.
Things finally start to show a bit of life on Thursday the 16th. We get a pulse of swell pushing up to around 5 ft to 6 ft from the north-northeast. The combined energy climbs into the low hundreds (205 to 269), which is a step in the right direction. The wind is offshore and clean, which is a massive plus. It’ll be surfable, but the conditions are still described as “very ordinary” so don’t expect perfection.
Now, the real standout arrives on Friday the 17th of July. This is the one I’m eyeing up. Overnight, the swell jumps to a solid 7 ft from the north-northeast with a period around 7 seconds. The combined energy pumps up into the 400s, and we’ve got light offshore winds–that’s clean, lined-up surf all morning and into the afternoon. This is easily the best of the bunch, a proper window of quality.
And if you can hold out even longer, Saturday the 18th of July looks even better for the experts. Swell touches 8 ft from the north-northeast with a period of 9 seconds, giving it some proper grunt (combined energy of 907). The morning is glassy with hardly a breath of wind. That’s big, clean, and powerful. This is definitely for experienced surfers only–over 8 ft is expert territory, and at 8 ft it’s pushing the limits for most.
The quality holds into Sunday the 19th of July, with 6 ft to 6 ft swell and clean cross-off breezes, but the energy drops back a little. By Monday the 20th, the wind swings cross-shore and it gets a bit choppy, so the window closes.
So, to sum it up: it’s a long wait, but don’t give up. The clear standout is Friday the 17th of July for the clean, solid surf. For the hardcore crew, Saturday the 18th is the big one. Just remember, Black Middens is an inconsistent reef spot and it can get busy sometimes, so get in early.
