The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’ve got a long wait ahead for any real waves at Black Middens (reef/river/pier). The first week is pretty much a write-off. You’ll see tiny, weak lumps for days, but nothing worth paddling out for. The water is sitting at 60°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it won’t be a shock to the system.
The real action starts to build on Saturday, July 18th. The morning pushes up to 2 ft from the NNE with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 223 (moderate) and winds are offshore, so it’ll be clean. The afternoon adds a little more size at 2 ft and energy at 263. It’s not perfect, but it’s our first sign of life.
Then Sunday, July 19th is the standout. Morning sees 2 ft from the NNE with a period of 9 seconds. The energy jumps to 537 (strong) and we’ve got clean offshore winds from the north. The afternoon holds the same size and direction, with energy building to 641 (strong) and only a light cross-off breeze. This is the best run of the whole forecast. The waves will have some punch and shape, but keep in mind Black Middens is inconsistent, so you’ll have to be patient between sets. Crowds are possible, so get in early.
After that, it drops off hard. Monday, July 20th is back down to 1.0 ft with weak energy, and from Tuesday, July 21st all the way through to the end of the month, we’re looking at tiny, poor surf with hardly any energy. There are some glassy mornings on the 22nd and 26th, but the swell is just too small to do anything with. The last week is a total loss with onshore winds and barely a ripple.
So bottom line: ignore the first week and the whole second week. Your only real window is the weekend of the 18th and 19th, and Sunday morning is the pick of the bunch.
Rusty.
