The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you—this stretch is a real test of patience. The Cove is a quality reef setup, but it's going to dish out a whole lot of frustration before it offers anything worthwhile. The water’s sitting at 56°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The long-range stuff looks like it might have something, but we’re talking a solid week of nothing good. From Sunday the 19th right through to Thursday the 23rd, it’s all poor surf conditions. The swell is there, but the wind is just a mess—cross-shore and cross-onshore, choppy and lumpy. That 4ft to 5ft of WNW swell is just getting wrecked by moderate to strong breezes. Not worth a paddle.
Alright, Friday the 24th morning is the first real glimmer. We’ve got a 7ft WNW swell pushing in, and the wind swings cross-offshore, making it clean. The combined energy is moderate (616), and for a reef like The Cove, that’s a solid pulse. The swell period is a short 9 seconds, so it’ll be a bit peaky, but clean conditions at a dependable reef are a rare treat around here. This is the standout. It’s not huge, but it’s the best on offer by a long shot.
After that, things get messy again. Saturday the 25th afternoon has a bigger 8ft WNW swell and a longer 11-second period, giving it some real grunt (combined energy of 1172). But the wind is cross-shore, creating a cross-chop, so it’s only a marginal call. You’d need the right tide.
Monday the 27th morning is another one to watch. A 8ft WNW swell with a 10-second period and cross-offshore wind (clean). The combined energy is strong (1131). It’s a solid option, but the wind is a moderate breeze, so it’s not pristine.
The rest of the run is a write-off. Tuesday the 28th sees a massive 20ft WNW swell, but with a strong breeze and messy cross-shore wind, it’s just a washing machine for experts only. The energy is extreme (9213), but the conditions are poor. Wednesday the 29th is near gale-force cross-onshore winds; don’t even think about it. The whole second week is a mix of onshore wind and lumpy surf, with nothing clean.
So, bottom line: your best bet is Friday the 24th morning. That’s your window. Pin it.
Rusty.
