The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for The Cove over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, this is a tough run. The next week and a half is pretty much a write-off for proper surfing. We’ve got small, weak swell and the wind is mostly from the wrong angles, making it messy. The water temp is sitting right on 55°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The real light at the end of the tunnel comes on Tuesday the 28th of July. The swell finally bumps up to a solid 5 ft, coming from the WNW, with a decent 10-second period. The combined energy jumps to 490, which is moderate. But the kicker? Tuesday morning looks glassy. That’s your best window for a clean wave. It’s a reef break, so it handles that swell direction well, and with the calm conditions, it should be the standout of the whole forecast. Be aware though, at 5 ft, it’s getting a bit too much for beginners.
Then, Wednesday the 29th is the real gem. The swell holds at 6 ft from the W, combined energy hits 649, and the wind goes cross-off in the morning, turning to a clean offshore in the afternoon. That’s the best call of the whole period. Expect good, clean, lined-up waves. This one is for the intermediate crew – it’s a little too big for the groms.
Before that, from the 15th through to the 27th, it’s a long grim stretch. The swell is tiny, often under 3 ft, and the wind is almost always cross or cross-onshore, creating chop. The energy is weak, mostly under 200. There’s a glimmer of a glassy morning on the 26th, but the swell is too small to get excited about. The run from the 23rd to the 25th is particularly flat and windy.
So, to wrap it up: suffer through the first ten days, and then aim for the 28th and 29th. The 29th has the best combo of size, direction, and glassy wind. The Cove is a reef, so it can be a bit fickle, but when it’s on, it’s on. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so get out early on that Wednesday.
Rusty.
