Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let me tell you about the outlook for Sandwood Bay. It’s a bit of a tough stretch ahead, to be honest. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for anything worth paddling out for. The swell energy is weak, the wind is constantly messing things up, and the water is about average for this time of year. You’re looking at a long gap of days with nothing to recommend.
Starting from the 6th of July, it’s all cross-shore wind and messy, lumpy conditions. Swells are short-period and weak, barely scraping up. By the 10th, the energy drops right off – that combined swell energy is only 105 (weak) to 213 (moderate wave energy) but the wind is still on it, making it choppy. We get a slight flicker on the 11th of July with a morning that’s only a 1 out of 10 for surf – that’s ‘marginal’ at best, and the wind is from the WNW, which is cross-onshore. It’s not worth getting wet for.
From the 12th onwards, it’s tiny. Swells are under 3 ft, with periods in the 7 to 10 second range, and the energy is pitiful – we’re talking values like 70, 56, 20. The wind does swing offshore (ENE and NE) on the 13th and 14th of July, which keeps the surface clean, but there’s simply no swell to ride. By the 21st of July, a bit of a bump shows up – 5 ft from the NNE with a 6-second period – but the wind is cross-onshore from the WSW and it’s just another poor, choppy mess.
Honestly, there are no standouts, no windows of opportunity. For a spot like Sandwood Bay, a break that’s fairly consistent, this is a dead run. It won’t stay this way forever, but for now, the only thing breaking is the wind chop. It might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing if the wind holds.
