The Lowdown
Alright, folks. Rusty here. Let’s take a long hard look at what’s coming down the pipe for Bluepool. I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. Honestly, it’s a real quiet spell for a point break, and if you’re chasing a wave, you’re going to be doing a lot of waiting.
Right now, and for the next ten days or so, the energy is just flat. The combined swell energy barely gets into double digits, often sitting at a measly 30 or even 3. You’ll see tiny waves, mostly around 0.3ft to 1ft out of the west or southwest. The swell periods are all over the shop – some long-period stuff from the SW at 18 seconds on Tuesday morning, but with only 0.3ft of height, that's just a long-period ripple. It’s poor surf conditions across the board early on – not even worth paddling out for.
That clean, glassy morning on Monday the 20th and again on Tuesday the 21st with a light ESE breeze? Beautiful for a coffee, but the swell is virtually non-existent with energy at just 3. It’s going to feel like a long, dry run. There’s a stretch of about a week and a half there where I wouldn't bother waxing up.
Now, things get a bit more interesting towards the very end of the forecast. By the 27th of July, we start to see a pulse of real energy. The combined energy jumps to 302 on Monday morning, with surf building to 6ft out of the WSW at 7 seconds. That’s moderate energy and a decent size, but the wind is cross-shore from the SW, so it'll be a bit lumpy. This swell is still pretty short-period, so it won’t have that grinding, smooth point-break power.
The standout moment – and it’s still a week and a half out, so keep your fingers crossed – looks like the 29th of July. The morning brings a solid 7ft swell from the WSW, with the combined energy jumping to 459. That’s strong wave energy. The swell period is still short at 8 seconds, but the wind turns cross-offshore from the SSW at 25 km/h. That’s the key. A cross-offshore wind on a point like Bluepool can make it absolutely perfect. That 7ft height is getting into the expert zone though – this is not a day for beginners. Because the swell is short-period and a little dumpy, and with that size, the break could actually be more interesting for kite surfing than for a standard paddle session. But for the experienced surfer wanting a clean, powerful wave, the morning of July 29th is the only real target in this whole 16-day window.
For Bluepool, this is what a blank run looks like. Forecasts can change, but right now, you’re mostly waiting.
Rusty.
