G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you – this is a pretty grim stretch for Trestrignel. There’s no decent surf on offer for the entire 16-day period, from now through to July 20. Every single session is rated as poor surf conditions, and that’s a rough run. The wave energy is mostly weak, often below 100 (like just 20 on the 20th morning), though there are a few pulses of moderate energy mid-period – hitting 251 on July 12 morning, for instance – but they’re accompanied by onshore or cross-onshore winds that mess things up completely.
The first couple of days are flat and disappointing. Sunday July 5 has a tiny 3ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period, but a NNW breeze is blowing straight onshore. Monday July 6 morning starts glassy with a light NE breeze, and there’s a tiny 3ft WNW swell (101 energy), so it’s surfable but very ordinary. That’s about the only moment that might tempt you for a paddle – but it’s barely worth it.
From there, the wind turns cross or cross-onshore for days on end, and the swell stays small – mostly between 2ft and 3ft. The period is generally short, under 10 seconds, so the waves are weak and messy. The standout in terms of size comes around July 12 morning, with a 5ft WNW swell and a period of 8 seconds (moderate energy at 251), but it’s blown out by a moderate cross-onshore NW breeze at 25 km/h. Not worth your time unless you’re a kite surfer – for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go.
Later in the second week, the swell drops even further, down to 1ft on July 20 morning, and the wind is still messy. There’s a brief moment on July 18 afternoon with a light onshore NNW breeze and a 2ft W swell, but again, poor surf conditions.
If you’re determined to get wet, Monday July 6 morning is the only window with glassy conditions and a tiny clean swell – but it’s not going to be memorable. For the rest of it, the combination of small swell, cross-winds, and choppy conditions makes this a blank run. It’s one of those stretches where the ocean just isn’t cooperating. Hang in there – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
