The Lowdown
Right, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Trestrignel.
Honestly, for the bulk of this 16-day run, it’s a bit of a tough stretch. We’re looking at a solid week or more of very ordinary conditions, with the wind pretty much ruining any chance of decent surf. The water’s sitting at 66°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so at least the water temp’s not a shocker.
Things start off on Tuesday the 18th with a 4ft – 4ft WNW swell, but it’s a short-period 6-second windswell with a stiff west wind blowing cross-shore. Combined energy is weak (92). It’s poor, and the afternoon gets even choppier. Wednesday the 19th is more of the same – a bit of swell, but the wind is messy. The swell picks up on Thursday the 20th, with a 6ft – 7ft WNW swell, and the combined energy jumps to moderate (534), but the west wind is still strong and cross-shore, making it a lumpy, choppy mess. Not worth getting wet.
We get a brief window of hope on Friday the 21st morning. The swell drops to 4ft WNW, but we get a clean offshore wind from the NW. The combined energy is moderate (280). It’s a short window, and the afternoon turns cross-on and choppy again. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off – tiny, weak swell and strong winds. By Monday the 24th, the swell is virtually flat (1.0ft), and it’s glassy. Nice for a paddle, but not for surfing.
The first real glimmer of something decent comes on Tuesday the 25th. The morning is still tiny (2ft), but we have a clean offshore wind from the south. The afternoon sees the swell build to 3ft WNW with a 10-second period (moderate combined energy of 214) and a moderate offshore wind. It’s clean, but only surfable – nothing to write home about. Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are back to a messy cross-shore wind and lumpy conditions.
From Friday the 28th, things start to settle. The wind turns cross-offshore or clean on several mornings, with a consistent 3ft – 4ft W/WNW swell. The combined energy is moderate (around 180-207). The surf is surfable but ordinary – small and clean, but not exciting. This pattern holds through the weekend and into Monday the 31st.
Now, look here. The standout window is the first day of September, Tuesday the 1st. The swell jumps up to 8ft from the west with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is strong (1301). It’s big, and with a moderate offshore wind from the SSE, it’s going to be clean. But be warned – 8ft is expert territory. This is for the experienced crew only. The afternoon sees a fresh offshore wind, but the swell drops a touch to 7ft. Wednesday the 2nd is still big (7ft), but the wind turns cross-shore, making it a bit tricky.
So, the best bet on offer? That’s the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. Big, clean, and powerful. If you’re not an expert, you’re better off waiting for a smaller, cleaner morning like the 25th or 28th, but those are just ordinary.
Stay safe out there.
