The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch. A long spell of tiny, bumpy surf with the wind blowing all wrong. The only real chance of anything decent is right at the very end, and even then, it’s a long shot.
We kick off at Trestrignel (France) with a flat, messy period. From Sunday, 19 July right through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny—mostly 1ft to 3ft, with periods that are all over the place, from a quick 4 seconds to a longer 12 seconds. The wind is a constant problem, mostly cross or cross-on, with moderate to fresh breezes. Water temp is about average for the time of year. The combined energy is weak, usually between 17 and 40, so there’s no power behind it. Don’t bother paddling out.
Then we get into the first week of August, and the swell really ramps up. From Monday, 27 July afternoon, the waves start building, hitting 5ft, then 5ft, 7ft, and even 7ft on Friday, 31 July and Saturday, 1 August. The combined energy jumps into the moderate to strong range, hitting 788 on 1 August (early). But here’s the problem: the wind is cross-on nearly the whole time, and the wave comments are all “poor surf conditions.” The swell direction is from the WNW, which is a long way from the optimum NW direction for this spot. The period is short, mostly 7 to 9 seconds, so the waves will be lumpy, choppy, and messy. It’s a big, ugly, onshore mess. The water is still average temp.
The only real standout comes on the final day of the forecast: Monday, 3 August, morning. The wind finally goes clean, cross-off from the east at a gentle 9 mph. The swell is 5ft from the west, with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a moderate 297. The conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a grade 1 out of 10, but it’s the best we’ve got. For a sheltered spot, this is a tiny window of hope. The swell will be a bit soft, and the direction isn’t perfect, but with clean wind and a manageable size, you might get a few turns. The crowds are *always* there, so expect company.
So, to sum it up: a long, flat, windy gap for the first 10 days, then a period of big, messy, onshore swell that’s really only good for kite surfing, and finally a single, clean morning on 3 August that might just be worth a look. It’s a rough run, but that last morning is the only real chance. Keep your eyes peeled, but don’t expect much.
Rusty.
