The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at this stretch of coast. To be straight with you, it’s a pretty grim outlook for Trestrignel over the next 16 days. The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s not a downer.
We’ve got a long, blank run to start. The first few days are a write-off. Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th offer knee-to-waist high junk with strong cross-onshore winds and weak, choppy conditions. The combined swell energy is weak at best, sitting around 129, so there’s no push.
Thursday the 20th sees a bit more size – around 7ft from the WNW – but don’t get excited. The period is short at 9 seconds, and the wind is a fresh cross or cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy combined energy is moderate at 573 to 659. This is more of a kite-surfing kind of setup than a paddler’s dream.
Friday the 21st is a glimmer of hope. The morning is still crummy, but by the afternoon we get clean, offshore winds from the NNW. The swell drops to 4ft with a moderate 9-second period, and combined energy around 244. It’s the best of a bad bunch but still nothing to write home about. If you’re desperate, that’s your window.
From Saturday the 22nd through Monday the 31st of August, the story is the same: small, weak swell (often under 3ft and with combined energy as low as 20), and nearly constant cross or onshore winds. The rare clean window on the 25th has offshore winds but swell is barely 1.0ft – not worth suiting up.
Things look more energetic around Thursday the 27th, with 6ft from the west and clean cross-off winds, but combined energy is 540, and the period is only 8 to 9 seconds. Still, the wind is clean, so it’s a better option than most. It’s not a standout, but it’s the closest thing to one we’ve got in the second week.
Entering September, the 1st brings a 8ft WNW swell with 8-second period but fresh cross-onshore winds, making it lumpy. Combined energy jumps to 744 – that’s strong energy – but the chop kills it. This is expert-only if you head out, and even then, expect a beating. By the 2nd of September, we’re back to moderate, lumpy cross-shore conditions with 7ft swell and combined energy of 536.
So here's the bottom line: there’s nothing in this 16-day window that qualifies as a true standout. The best on offer is Friday the 21st afternoon for a clean, small session, and maybe Thursday the 27th if you want size and don’t mind average shape. Most days are blown out or flat. It’s a rough run for the area.
Rusty.
