The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Let me tell you about the next 16 days – and it's a rough one. There's absolutely nothing worth getting wet for. From Sunday July 19 right through to Monday August 3, every single forecast at Trestrignel is a dud. That's a full two weeks plus of no good surf. Trestrignel is a sheltered beginner spot that usually likes NW swell, but the wind and swell just aren't playing ball.
Let's break it down. Sunday morning the 19th: some clouds, a 1-foot WNW swell with a weak 8-second period, and a cross-off breeze from the east at 16 mph. Water temp is 64°F, about 1°F above normal – nothing crazy. Combined energy is a pathetic 15. Looks clean but too small. The afternoon goes cross and lumpy. Monday the 20th, Tuesday the 21st, Wednesday the 22nd – all tiny, all messy. A few mornings have light cross-off winds, but the swell barely reaches 1 feet. Thursday the 23rd has a bit more height – 2 feet – but it's a short-period NNE windswell, and the wind is cross-on, choppy. No good.
Then things get bigger but not better. From Sunday July 26 onwards, we start seeing real swell – 3 feet Sunday morning, building to 5 feet Sunday afternoon, then 5 feet Monday July 27 morning, 6 feet Monday afternoon, 6 feet Tuesday July 28 morning, and even 5 feet Tuesday afternoon. Energy jumps from 150 to 416 – moderate to strong. But the wind is cross-on, onshore, or just plain messy. Swell direction is mostly WNW, which is good for the spot, but the wind wrecks it. Period is 8-9 seconds, so not long-period groundswell. Just lumpy, choppy junk. Water temp is missing from later rows, but likely still around 64°F.
By Wednesday July 29, the swell drops to 4 feet, then 3 feet, and the wind stays cross-on or onshore. Thursday July 30 through to Monday August 3 – swell under 3 feet, wind from the west or north, still cross-on or onshore. Energy weak. Nothing changes.
So here's the deal: if you're a beginner, Trestrignel is usually a safe spot when it's small and clean, but there's no clean window. The wind is always wrong, and the swell is either too small or too short-period. Even the bigger days from July 26 onward are blown out. For a sheltered spot, this is a tough run. I'd say save your energy. Forecasts can change, but right now it's a solid 16-day gap of nothing worth paddling for. Keep an eye on it, but don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
