The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer around Trestrignel. I gotta be straight with you – this stretch of the forecast is looking pretty grim, and there’s a long wait ahead for anything worthwhile.
We kick off Thursday, July 16th, and right away it’s a no-go. We’ve got a tiny 3ft swell from the NE at a short 5 seconds, with a cross-shore wind messing things up from 9 mph. The wave energy is weak at 55, and the water temp is 64°, which is about average for this time of year. But honestly, the surf is poor, and it stays that way for days.
There’s a big gap here. From Thursday right through until Saturday the 25th, there’s basically nothing worth paddling out for. We see days of flat, weak surf with tiny heights like 0.7ft to 1ft, and when there is a little bump, the wind is always cross or cross-on, keeping it choppy and ugly. It’s a real blank run.
Finally, around Saturday, July 25th, things start to look a bit different. The swell picks up to about 3ft on the morning, and by the afternoon it’s hitting 5ft from the WNW with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range at 153 (afternoon). But – and it’s a big but – the wind swings to a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy. For a beginner spot like this, 5ft is getting a bit much, and with that wind, it’s just not going to be clean. This setup actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th offer similar conditions: chest-to-shoulder high swell around 4ft from the WNW, but still with cross or cross-onshore winds. The energy is moderate, reaching up to 180 on Monday morning, but the wind chops it up.
The first real standout doesn’t show up until Tuesday, July 28th, in the morning. We get a 2ft swell from the WNW, with light cross-offshore winds from the SW at 12 mph. The report says it’s clean. The wave energy is a bit weaker at 80, but that clean face will make the most of it. It’s a small day, but if you’re after a glassy session, that’s your window. It’s not a classic, but it’s the best of a bad bunch.
After that, the end of the month offers a bit more size – on Friday, July 31st, the morning shows a 4ft swell from the west with a period of 9 seconds, and an offshore wind from the NNW. The energy jumps to a strong 229. That could be interesting, but it’s over a week away, so take that promise with a pinch of salt.
Bottom line: we’ve got a massive dry spell until late July. The only days that look even half-decent are the morning of Tuesday the 28th for a clean, small wave, or maybe the morning of the 31st if the long-range holds. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
