The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for Trestrignel. We've got a long stretch of flat, messy, or just plain poor surf ahead.
Right now, and for several days, there's nothing worth paddling out for. We're looking at a gap with no recommendations at all until later in the period. The swell is tiny and weak, the wind is almost always cross or cross-onshore, and the wave energy is basically non-existent. For example, Thursday the 16th of July has a 3ft NE windswell with a short period of 5 seconds, and the combined energy is only 58 – that's weak. It's the same story through the weekend and into the next week. We get a few little bumps from the west, but they're barely 1ft to 2ft and the winds keep them chopped up or lumpy.
The weather is mostly clear, but that doesn't help when there's no power in the water. The wind states are constantly "poor surf conditions," and the scores reflect that.
Now, things do change a bit as we get toward the end of the month. Thursday the 29th of July starts to see a real increase in swell height, with 6-7ft from the west, and the combined wave energy jumps to 586 – that's strong energy, for sure. The problem is the wind is still onshore or cross-onshore, and the period is a short 8-9 seconds, so it's going to be a choppy, bumpy mess. That's really only one for the experts, and even then, expect sloppy conditions. The water temperature anomaly is not mentioned here, so we'll assume it's about average for the time of year.
Thursday the 30th of July sees a drop to a 5ft west swell, but the energy is still moderate at 430, with onshore winds. Not great.
Friday the 31st of July bumps back up to 6-7ft on a WNW swell, with a short period of 8 seconds, and onshore wind again. The combined energy is 472. Again, it's powerful but rough and messy.
To be honest, there isn't a single standout day in this outlook. The best you could hope for is maybe those late-July days with some size, but you'll be battling onshore wind and short-period chop. It's just not a clean setup. The swell direction is from the west and northwest, which isn't the optimum for Trestrignel anyway – it's best with a NW swell and an SSE wind to go offshore cleanly. We aren't getting that.
So, save your energy. It's a long stretch of flat, then a couple of days of big, rough, wind-affected stuff that'll only be for the hardcore with a high tolerance for pain. Until we get some proper groundswell with clean offshore winds, it's a waiting game.
Signing off, Rusty.
