The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at the forecast for Trestrignel. Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. For a spot that’s sheltered and usually a beginner’s haven, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and messy. The water’s sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one small win.
The first real chance of anything rideable doesn’t show up until Friday the 24th of July. The swell picks up to a clean 4ft from the WNW with a solid 12-second period, giving it some real groundswell grunt. The combined energy is moderate (423). That early morning window has a light cross-offshore breeze, which should keep things tidy. Even though the wave comment says “marginal,” that’s the best-looking window on offer. The swell direction is WNW, which is a good match for the optimum NW direction, so it should wrap in okay.
Saturday the 25th of July morning is another notable one. Swell bumps up to 5ft from the west, with a 10-second period and strong energy (551). The wind is light and cross, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but not trashed. That’s a solid, punchy size for a sheltered beginner spot, so more experienced surfers will get the best of it.
Sunday the 26th of July morning has a clean, cross-offshore breeze with 5ft from the WNW, but the period drops to 8 seconds, so it’s a bit weaker and more windswell in nature. Energy is still decent (341), but it won’t have the same push as the previous days.
Now, for the standout: if you’ve got to pick one session, make it the Friday morning, the 24th of July. That 12-second period groundswell with clean winds is the best quality you’ll see in this whole run. Saturday the 25th is a close second for size, but the conditions are a little rougher.
After that, the last week of July looks pretty average. Monday the 27th has a big 8ft WNW swell (841 energy), but it’s cross-shore wind and lumpy, and at that size, it’s expert-only territory. Then it just gets messy again with onshore winds and chop. The 29th of July sees a 10ft WNW swell (1051 energy), but it’s cross-onshore and choppy – that’s more for kite surfers than paddle surfers, honestly.
So, a long wait for a couple of tidy windows, then a messy end. Keep an eye on the wind for the 24th. That’s your best bet.
