The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for Trestrignel is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window that’s just not delivering for paddle surfing. The entire period is plagued by poor surf conditions, and there’s not a single recommendation that scores highly enough to get excited about. The first few days are a write-off, and the pattern doesn't really improve.
We start off Wednesday, July 15th, with small, weak swell. The water’s a touch warmer than normal at 64°, but it hardly matters. The wind is a moderate cross-shore, messing up what little energy there is. The combined energy is a paltry 75 (weak energy), and it’s a similar story through the rest of the week. Thursday and Friday are the same old story – small, short-period NE windswell, cross-shore breezes, and nothing worth paddling out for.
Over the weekend, Saturday the 18th sees a tiny bit of west swell, but it’s ankle-high at 1ft, and winds are light offshore, which is clean, but there’s simply no wave to ride. Sunday the 19th brings a spike in swell height to 5ft, but it’s coming from the wrong direction with a nasty cross-shore wind at 25 mph. The combined energy jumps to 145 (moderate), but the description says it all: “strong cross-shore with messy cross-chop” – it’s a complete mess.
We see a bit more size on Monday the 22nd, with 6ft NE swell, but again, it’s accompanied by a fresh cross-shore breeze. The energy is moderate (222), but the quality is poor, so it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle surf. The following days are a rinse and repeat of small, weak, and choppy conditions. The second week is a desert – tiny swells, wrong wind directions, and combined energy levels dropping to single digits on Friday the 24th.
Trestrignel is a sheltered beginner spot, and it’s consistent enough, but in this forecast, there’s just no window where the stars align. The break is inevitably crowded when it’s good, but that’s not a worry right now. For a point of reference, the water temperature anomaly is a touch warmer than normal, but frankly, you’d be better off on the beach with a towel than a board. This is a blank run, and for this area, it’s just one of those periods where the forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a no-go.
Rusty.
