The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee, surfers. Rusty here with a look at what Trestrignel has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
Look, I won't sugarcoat it – this is a tough run for Trestrignel. For most of the 16-day window, the conditions are just plain poor. The wind is nearly always blowing cross or cross-on, messing up the surface, and even when there's some swell in the water, it’s chopped up and lumpy. There are some proper pulses of energy coming through – you see numbers like 372 (moderate wave energy) on the 24th afternoon, then a big jump to 1879 (strong to very strong wave energy) by the 29th morning – but the wind just wrecks it every time. A real pity.
The water temp is sitting around 66°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Let’s work through what we’ve got. The 23rd and 24th are a write-off. Tiny, messy, with a fresh breeze keeping things ugly. No point even looking.
The first faint glimmer comes on Tuesday morning, the 25th. We’ve got clear skies and a light southerly breeze, making it feel clean, with a 3ft swell out of the NE. Period is short at 7 seconds, and the energy is weak (124), so the waves will be pretty weak and crumbly. It’s surfable but very ordinary. The afternoon looks worse with a risk of storms.
Wednesday the 26th shows a bit of hope on the morning session. A light southerly offshore wind with some clouds. Swell is small, 2ft from the WNW, period 9 seconds, and energy is low (66). It’ll be clean, but for beginners only.
Moving into the weekend, the swell gets bigger but the wind gets nastier. Friday the 28th has a 5ft to 5ft swell, but it’s blowing 25 mph from the SW, making for messy, cross-onshore junk. Saturday the 29th sees the biggest swell of the window – 10ft from the W, with very strong energy (1879 in the morning). But again, it’s a fresh cross-shore breeze pumping, making it lumpy. The afternoon has a strong breeze (25 mph) but is cleaner. Still, 10ft here with that wind is only for the hardcore, and even then, it’s not going to be pretty. A lot more interesting for kite surfing than paddling.
We then hit a dead zone from the 31st of August through to the 3rd of September. Tiny, weak, and bumpy. Then, a late pulse arrives on the 4th of September. Friday morning has a 6ft swell from the W with 362 energy, but again that fresh cross-shore wind (19 mph) chops it all up. The afternoon gets a bit bigger (7ft, 685 energy) but the same story.
The final standout, and honestly the best bet of the whole period if you’re an experienced surfer, is on Sunday morning, the 6th of September. We get a solid 8ft WNW groundswell with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is very strong at 1394. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze from the SW, making it *clean*. This is the one session where the stars almost align for size and clean conditions. The water is still messy, but for the skilled crew, this is your only real window. Just be warned, the afternoon goes downhill again.
Then the final couple of days on the 7th are just huge and messy – 12ft swells with gale-force winds. Not for surfing.
So, bottom line. Trestrignel is mostly a washout. The only two moments worth your time are:
- Tuesday morning, the 25th for a tiny, clean beginner wave.
- Sunday morning, the 6th of September for a proper, clean, solid groundswell for experts only. That’s your one true standout.
Stay patient, folks.
Rusty.
