The Lowdown
Alright, I’m gonna level with you. This forecast for Trestrignel is a rough one for the next 16 days. We’ve got a long patch of nothing to start with, and even when it tries to get going, the conditions just aren’t playing ball.
From now until the end of August, we’re looking at a real dry spell. You’ve got tiny swell, poor wind, and a lot of chop. Not a single session worth paddling out for. Monday the 24th kicks off with a measly 0.7 ft of cross-offput, but it’s a cross-off with a 22 mph wind that’s just not favourable. The waves are poor and that’s the story right through the week. A few clean mornings, sure, but the swell is too small and the energy is pathetic. The combined energy on Wednesday the 26th morning is only 64 (weak), so you’re looking at flat, gutless waves.
The first real push of swell comes Saturday the 29th, but don’t get excited. You’ve got an 8 ft swell from the west, but it’s a 8 second period, and the wind is howling at 19 mph from the west, making it a cross-shore mess. The combined energy jumps to 878 (moderate), but it’s lumpy and cross-chop. That’s a bloody mess, not a surf. For a beach break, that’s more of a kite session.
The first date that even looks like a whisper of a chance is Monday the 7th of September. The wind finally swings offshore from the east-southeast, 12 mph, and it’s a clean cross-off. The swell is 7 ft from the west-northwest, period 10 seconds. That’s a solid groundswell, and the combined energy is 933 (strong). But the score is still a 1/10, so it’s marginal. It’s a big, powerful swell for a beach break, might be a bit too straight for the banks, but for a surfer who knows the take-off zone, it could be the only window we get.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is Tuesday the 8th of September. It’s at the very end of the run. The morning brings a 10 ft swell from the west with a very long period of 15 seconds. That’s serious groundswell energy. The wind is offshore from the east-southeast, 16 mph, keeping it clean. The combined energy is 3987 (very strong). This is a serious swell. But it’s a big, powerful groundswell for a beach break; it might break too straight and close out. There’s a chance of a few ledgey, open faces, but it’s not for the faint-hearted and it’s a long way out, so treat it as a promising but uncertain prospect.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, no drama there.
So, the honest truth? The best session on offer is September 8th. It’s the only one with real size, good energy, and clean offshore wind. But it’s a big, powerful groundswell that will be challenging. For the rest of the run, you’re waiting. It’s a long blank stretch, but that’s how it goes sometimes – the ocean will turn around.
