The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, the start of this outlook is a bit of a slow grind. The first few days don’t have much to write home about. We’ve got a fairly exposed setup at Trestrignel, which is a sheltered beginner-friendly spot, but the conditions are fighting it for the first week. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Tuesday the 25th is where we finally see a glimmer of hope. Early morning, it’s dead glassy with a light SSE breeze, clean as a whistle. Swell is small at 4ft coming from the NE with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 136. It’s not going to blow you away, but for a beginner spot, that’s the most inviting window we get early on.
Thursday the 27th afternoon sees a bit more push – 4ft from the WSW with 8 seconds, and moderate energy (196). It’s cross-off and clean, but still not much to get excited about. Then Friday the 28th and into the weekend, the swell starts to pump up, but the wind is a mess – strong cross-shore and lumpy. Saturday the 29th morning has 8ft from the W with 9 seconds and strong energy (941), but with fresh cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions, that’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddler’s dream. That 8ft is expert-only territory anyway.
The real standout, if you’re patient, is Monday the 7th of September. Monday morning brings a 3ft swell from the WNW with a solid 11-second period, giving it proper groundswell feel and moderate energy (234). The wind is light from the south, cross-off, and the surf is clean. For Trestrignel, that’s the best combination of size, direction, and conditions in the whole window. It’s the one morning where you want to be in the water early.
Otherwise, the second week drops off quickly – a lot of small, weak swell and onshore winds. There’s a bit of a gap from around the 2nd to the 5th of September with nothing worth paddling out for.
Stay patient, aim for the 7th, and you’ll get your reward.
Rusty.
