The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. Rusty here, with the full lowdown on what’s coming our way for Pwlldu Point.

Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you. For the next week or so, it’s a real struggle. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple worth paddling for. From Wednesday, August 5th, all the way through to the morning of Wednesday, August 12th, the wave energy is just pathetic, with readings as low as 0 and up to a weak 80 (80 combined energy). The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the wind is just messing with what little is there. It’s a proper flat spell.

We start to see a tiny pulse of life on Thursday morning, August 13th. The swell nudges up to 3ft from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds. The energy jumps to a moderate 162 (162 combined energy) and the wind goes glassy. We finally get “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” so it’s a 1 out of 10 kind of day. It’s not going to set the world on fire, but you can get wet. Friday morning, August 14th, is a carbon copy: 3ft, glassy, and a 1/10. A little crumbly beach break maybe, but take what you can get.

Things get a bit more interesting when we look further out. The real highlight, the standout in this whole 16-day window, is shaping up for Tuesday morning, August 18th. The forecast is showing a solid 8ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds, pumping in with a huge 927 (927 combined energy) – that’s serious wave energy. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WNW. The report says “expect very good surf conditions,” and I’m buzzing for it. This is the one to circle in your calendar. Just be aware, at 8ft, this is getting into expert territory for some, but for the rest of us, it’s going to be a proper session with heaps of power. The afternoon gets a bit dicey with a risk of thunderstorms and a strong 19 mph wind, so get it early.

The morning after, on Wednesday, August 19th, we’ve got a clean-up. Swell drops to 5ft from the WSW, still a solid 9-second period, and the wind turns glassy again from the NNW. The energy is a moderate 311 (311 combined energy). It’s another good window, but that Tuesday morning is the one to beat.

Summary: Don’t bother paddling out until the morning of Thursday, August 13th if you’re desperate. The true gold is Tuesday morning, August 18th. That’s your best bet for a proper, powerful, clean surf session. The following morning, Wednesday, August 19th, is also a solid, clean option.

For the water temp, it’s about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit surprises.

Catch you in the lineup.
