The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for St Agnes over the next couple of weeks.
Gotta be straight with you – the forecast is looking pretty grim for a solid stretch. There’s a real quiet start, and honestly, you’d be hard-pressed to find a worthwhile wave for a good chunk of the first week. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only mild thing going on.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 22nd of July, but even then it’s a bit of a mess. The swell bumps up to 5 ft from the North, but the period is a short, weak 5 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at best (137), and with a fresh onshore breeze, it’s going to be lumpy and uninviting. Not one to get excited about.
Thursday the 23rd keeps things in the same boat with a 4 ft north swell, but the wind is cross-onshore, leaving it choppy. The energy is moderate (104), but the quality just isn’t there.
The second week brings a bit more size, but the winds stay stubbornly onshore or cross-onshore. By Sunday the 26th of July, we see a 5 ft WNW swell, with the energy climbing to 221. Still, a moderate north-northwest wind keeps the surface messy. It’s a bit more interesting for kite surfers than traditional paddle surfing.
The biggest push comes on Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th of July. Swells hit 7 ft and 6 ft, with strong to very strong energy (531 and 568). But the wind is still on it, and this size is really only for the experienced crew. The period at 8 seconds is still short, meaning the waves will be a bit crumbly and not holding that classic shape. The west-northwest direction isn’t ideal for the spot either.
So, what’s the best of a bad bunch? It’s a tough call. If I had to pick one, I’d say the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. You’ve got a 6 ft swell from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, and the northerly wind is offshore for St Agnes. The energy is very strong (568). It’s still a bit short-period for a true classic, but it’s the cleanest looking window of the entire forecast. The swell is pushing 6 ft, so it’s on the edge of big for beginners, but for the intermediate crew, it’s your best chance. The downside is the short period, which means it might close out a bit on the beach, but it’s still the standout.
Other than that, the whole 16-day window is a write-off for anyone looking for clean, quality surf. The waves are either too small, too onshore, or both. It’s a lean spell for St Agnes, no doubt about it.
