The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. This outlook for the next couple of weeks is a bit of a mixed bag, and it’s got a lot of waiting in it. We’re looking at a decent run of waves, but the wind is going to be the big player, and it’s going to make things messy more often than not. The water is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a small win if you’re willing to sit out the chaos.

We start off with a bit of a dud. Friday the 21st is a complete write-off with a strong NNW wind and poor surf. Saturday the 22nd isn't much better. There’s a small 2ft W swell in the morning with a light E cross-offshore wind, which at least makes it clean, but it’s just not doing anything. The rest of the weekend and into the start of next week stays tiny, with nothing breaking 3ft and winds are all over the place. This is a tricky, frustrating period, and you're looking at several days of not much to get excited about.

The middle of next week sees a bit more energy, but it’s a mess. Wednesday the 26th afternoon brings in a 6ft SSW swell, but it's short-period and the wind is howling offshore. Thursday the 27th gets bigger, with a strong 6ft WNW, but that’s accompanied by a strong cross-shore wind and the wave energy jumps right up. By Friday the 28th we’re dealing with solid 6ft to 8ft cross-shore slop. Combined wave energy ticks up into the 400s to 500s, which is moderate to strong, but the onshore and cross-shore winds are just going to wreck it. This looks more like a kite-surfing week than a surfing one.

Now let’s get to the brighter spots. Sunday the 30th offers a couple of semi-interesting windows with a SW cross-offshore breeze and a chunky 7ft WSW swell at St Agnes. It’s still just a marginal call, but it’s cleaner than the days before. Monday the 31st is the first real standout, though. The morning has a 8ft W swell with a gentle SW cross-offshore wind, which is going to leave it reasonably clean. The combined energy is strong, hitting 699. This is a bigger day, over 8ft, so it's really only for the experts out there. The wave quality is questionable, but the conditions are there.

After that, things get messy again for a couple of days with more cross-onshore winds and dropping swell. But then we get the second standout, and it’s the best-looking window in the whole forecast. On the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September, it’s going to be glassy. The wind goes light NNW and the swell is a clean 5ft from the WNW with an energy of 288. This is the morning to be out. It’s a proper clean window, and at 5ft, it’s a more manageable size. Friday the 4th also has a shot with a 5ft W swell and a light cross-offshore breeze, but it will be a touch more on it than Thursday.

The last few days of the forecast fade out again with smaller waves and more wind. There is a glassy window on Saturday the 5th afternoon, but the swell has dropped off to under 3ft. So, mark your calendar for the 31st for size, but if you want quality, the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September is the one. The long-range stuff looks promising but is less certain. This is Rusty, signing off.
