The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what St Agnes has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough start. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off for any decent waves. We’re looking at a long, dry spell from the 15th right through until the 28th of July where the surf is just flat or gutless. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 3ft, and the periods are short and weak. The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross or cross-onshore, which just chops things up. It’s a real bummer, but it happens. The combined swell energy is well below 100 for most of that run, just a sad little murmur.
You’ll be waiting until the very end of the forecast for any glimmer of hope. The standout window, and the only one worth getting excited about, is the morning of the 29th of July. The swell finally fills in, with a clean 7ft out of the west, and a period of 9 seconds bringing some shape. The wind is light from the north, making for a light cross-onshore with only small wind ripples. The combined energy jumps right up to a strong 688, which is a solid number. That’s the real deal for the crew who can handle it. At 7ft, this is strictly for the experienced surfers; beginners should stay on the beach. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year – a nice little bonus.
The 30th of July still has some size, with 5ft on the Thursday morning, but the wind is onshore and the energy drops to 314. It’s a step down, but still a lot better than the flat spell. The morning of the 30th is the backup option, but the 29th is the clear winner.
So, to sum it up: the first 13 days are a total loss. Don’t bother checking the cam. The only real shot you’ve got is the 29th of July. Wait for that window, and you’ll be glad you did.
Rusty.
