The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for St Agnes over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m looking at this and it’s a bit of a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for any decent surf. There’s not a single day where the conditions come together to give us anything worth paddling out for. We’ve got a real flat spell on the cards.
From July 15th right through to July 30th, every single session is marked as poor surf conditions. The swell is tiny, mostly hanging around 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft, and even when it bumps up a little, like on the 25th of July with a 5 ft to 6 ft swell from the NNW, the wind is all over the place, blowing cross-onshore or onshore, making it a choppy, lumpy mess. The combined swell energy does hit 295 (moderate energy) on the morning of the 25th, but with that wind and a short period of 6 seconds, it’s just not going to shape up. It’s a classic case of a bit of energy but no quality.
The wind is a constant problem. We get a bit of a glassy moment on the morning of July 22nd, with that ENE breeze at 3 mph, but with only 1.0 ft of swell, there’s nothing to ride. Later in the week, we get some clean conditions with cross-offshore winds on the 23rd and 30th of July, but again, the swell is far too small to do anything with.
For a spot like St Agnes that’s fairly exposed to the swell, it’s a real bummer. The consistent lack of any decent groundswell and the persistent onshore winds mean there’s simply nothing to get excited about. If you’re a kite surfer, that 25th of July might have some interest with that bump in swell and wind, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go.
So, there you have it. A blank 16 days. It’s one of those periods where the ocean just shuts down. Keep an eye on the charts, though, because it tends not to stay this flat for long.
