The Lowdown

Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks around St Agnes. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim run for most of the period with a lot of lumpy, onshore junk. The water temperature is sitting at 65.1° which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one small win.

The first real kick of swell arrives on Wednesday 19 August. We’ve got a 4.6ft swell from the WNW, but the problem is the wind is a moderate cross-on from the WNW at 15 mph, so it’s going to be choppy and messy. The energy is weak (355) and the period is short at 9 seconds, so it’s not doing us any favours. Later that afternoon, it gets worse – a 4.9ft swell from the west, but with a fresh 19 mph cross-on wind and a period of just 6 seconds. That’s a write-off.

Thursday 20 August sees a bigger swell push through, 7.9ft from the WNW on Thursday morning, but it’s still cross-on at 19 mph and the energy is moderate (881). The period is still short at 9 seconds, so it’ll be a lumpy, blown-out mess. By the afternoon, the wind shifts to onshore from the NW at 15 mph, and the swell drops to 6.9ft. Still not clean.

Friday 21 August is a step down in size – 3.3ft from the west on Friday morning, but again cross-on wind from the north at 15 mph. The period is 8 seconds, so it’s weak and choppy. The afternoon sees a drop to 3.0ft from the WNW, with an onshore wind from the NNW. Honestly, nothing to get excited about.

From Saturday 22 August through to Monday 24 August, the swell drops right off. Saturday morning has a 3.6ft from the north, period of 6 seconds, and a cross-on wind. The energy is very weak (154). By Sunday 23 August, it’s down to 1.0ft from the SW with a long period of 14 seconds, but the wind is still cross-on. The energy is barely registering (45). Monday 24 August offers a clean cross-off wind from the east, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft from the SSW. Not worth paddling out for.

Tuesday 25 August is still tiny – 1.3ft from the WNW in the morning, with a gentle cross-on breeze. The energy is 68. The afternoon sees a slight bump to 2.3ft from the WNW, but the wind picks up to a moderate cross-on again. Still poor.

Wednesday 26 August brings a bigger pulse – 6.6ft from the west in the morning, with a moderate cross-on wind from the NW at 12 mph. The period is short at 8 seconds, and the energy is moderate (481). It’s still lumpy and onshore. The afternoon drops to 4.9ft from the west, same story.

Thursday 27 August has a 3.9ft from the west in the morning, period 9 seconds, cross-on wind. The energy is 291. The afternoon picks up a bit more energy (569) with a 5.6ft from the west, period 10 seconds, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the WSW at 19 mph, creating a messy cross-chop.

Friday 28 August through Saturday 29 August finally sees a change in the wind. The morning of Friday 28 August has a clean cross-off wind from the south at 12 mph, but the swell is only 2.3ft from the west, period 8 seconds. The energy is very weak (69). The afternoon bumps to 3.6ft from the west, period 7 seconds, still clean. Saturday 29 August is similar – 3.9ft from the west in the morning, period 7 seconds, clean cross-off wind. The energy is 228. Sunday 30 August is back to choppy with a cross-on wind and a 2.3ft from the west in the morning, then a 4.9ft from the SW in the afternoon, period 6 seconds, with a cross-shore wind.

Now, the standout – and I say that with a big dose of caution – is Monday 31 August. We’ve got a solid 9.8ft from the west with a period of 10 seconds, and the energy is really strong (1539). That’s proper power. But the wind is a fresh cross-on from the NW at 19 mph, so it’s going to be lumpy and challenging. This is a big one for experienced surfers only, and even then, the conditions will
