The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the St Agnes stretch over the next couple of weeks.
To be brutally honest, the first week is a write-off. From Monday the 17th of August right through to Tuesday the 25th, it's a flat, choppy, and messy picture. The wind is mostly howling from the north and northwest, and the swell is weak and short-period, often coming straight from the wrong direction. The wave energy is pitiful, barely scraping into the 100s most days, and the conditions are consistently labelled "poor". You'd be fighting a losing battle out there. It’s a good time to wax the board and wait it out.
Things finally start to get interesting on Wednesday the 26th of August. We’ve got a solid push of WSW swell arriving, with heights around 7ft and a cross-offshore breeze from the SW. The wave energy jumps up to 983 (moderate), and the forecast is for "very good surf conditions". This is the first real standout of the outlook. The swell direction is a pretty good match for St Agnes, and clean conditions look like a goer. The only bummer is the water temperature sits at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The following Friday, the 28th of August, also looks like a highlight. The morning is a bit questionable with a 10ft swell from the WSW and a light cross-on wind, but the afternoon is where it’s at. The swell drops to a much more manageable 6ft, the wind swings to a cross-offshore from the SW, and the energy is a whopping 1426 (very strong). This is rated as "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." That 10ft morning swell is a bit of a beast, but the clean afternoon session will be worth the paddle out.
Then, on Sunday the 30th of August, we get another interesting window. The afternoon offers up an 8ft swell from the west with glassy conditions. The wave energy is 1005 (very strong), and the forecast is for "very good surf conditions" again. That glassy wind is a massive plus.
So, the pick of the entire window is the afternoon of Friday the 28th of August – clean, strong, and a solid 6ft for the experienced crew. The Wednesday morning the 26th and the Sunday afternoon the 30th are also very promising. Everything else is either flat, messy, or blown out. Keep your eyes peeled, and check back closer to the time as the long-range forecasts firm up.
Rusty.
