The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for St Agnes. I’ve scanned the whole forecast, and honestly, there’s not a single session that I’d be excited to paddle out for. The data is telling me we’re in for a long, quiet stretch.

Things start off flat and messy. Saturday the 18th through to the end of July is just a write-off. We’re looking at tiny, weak swell – mostly under 3ft – with sloppy onshore winds. The wave energy is pathetic, barely hitting 100 (36 on Saturday morning). It’s not just small; it’s choppy, bumpy, and just not worth your time. This hopeless run goes on for days.

We do get a bit more size rolling in around the 26th of July, with a swell pushing 6ft from the west-northwest, and the energy jumps up (402 on Sunday morning). But the wind is cross-shore, and the comment is “poor surf conditions.” It’s a lumpy, cross-chop mess. That kind of size with that wind is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, to be honest.

The only moment that even makes me pause is Thursday the 30th of July. We’ve got a 7ft west-northwest swell with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is finally cross-off from the south. The afternoon picks up a 2 rating, with 868 wave energy – that’s a lot of power. The wind is light, the surf looks clean. That’s the only window where the stars might align. But it’s a long way off, and the consistency is flagged as “fairly consistent,” so it’s a promising but uncertain call. If you’re desperate, that’s the one to watch.

Other than that, the rest of the run into early August is back to small, weak, and onshore. It’s a tough outlook, but for St Agnes, a blank run like this isn’t totally abnormal. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, I’d leave the boards in the shed.

Rusty.
