The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what’s coming up for St Agnes. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, but we've got a few windows to keep an eye on.
First up, the water temperature is sitting at a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at 65°F, so it's pleasant enough for a session.
The immediate forecast is a bit flat. From Saturday the 22nd right through until Wednesday the 26th of August, we are looking at tiny, weak surf. We’re talking about 2ft to 2ft at best, with combined swell energy readings mostly under 100, often below 80, so there's just nothing doing. It’s a long stretch of small, un-rideable conditions, so I wouldn’t bother paddling out until we see some change.
Things start to look a little more interesting on Thursday the 27th of August. The morning is the pick of that day, with a 6ft swell out of the southwest. The combined energy climbs to a moderate 374, so there’s some actual push. The wind is cross-offshore, which will keep things reasonably clean. It’s not a world-class day, but it's the first sign of life in a while.
Then we get a bit of a bumpy ride. From Thursday afternoon right through the end of the month, the swell picks up but the wind turns messy. Friday the 28th has some proper size – we’re talking 7ft to 10ft, with the combined energy spiking to 1080 on the afternoon – but the wind is onshore or cross-shore with rain showers, making it a lumpy, blown-out mess. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session. That kind of size is for experts only, and even then, the quality isn't there.
Now, here is the standout to get excited about. Mark your calendars for Monday the 31st of August. The morning is looking glassy, with a 5ft swell from the west. The combined energy is a solid 354, and with glassy conditions, the waves will be clean as a whistle. This is the best-looking window in the whole run, with the wind going totally calm. Get on it.
After that, the surf drops back down through the start of September. It’s small and choppy again until we get to a promising end to the period. On Friday the 4th of September, we have another potential standout. The morning and afternoon both show 4ft to 5ft of swell from the west-northwest. The combined energy is strong, reading 497 and 560, and more importantly, the wind is glassy. This is a long-range call, so it's promising but less certain, but if it comes together, it’ll be well worth the wait. The swell period also hits 12 seconds on the afternoon, so expect some proper groundswell lines. This longer period will give the waves some real shape and power at St Agnes.
Saturday the 5th of September has some strong offshore winds, but with the swell dropping to 3ft and the wind hitting 19-25 mph, it’s going to be hard work to get into anything.
So, to wrap it up: the best bets are Monday morning the 31st of August for a glassy, punchy session, and then keep an eye on Friday the 4th of September for another potential clean, solid day.
Rusty.
