The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a stretch ahead for St Agnes that’s going to test your patience. For the first ten days or so, it’s looking like a real struggle. The swell is tiny and the wind is mostly messy, so you’re better off saving your energy. There’s a big gap of flat, poor conditions from now until July 24th. Don’t get too excited about the middle of the month either – a little bump of weak, short-period windswell on the 17th only reaches about 3ft, but it’s coming from the NNW with a period of just 6 seconds, and the wind is all over the place. It’s not worth a paddle.
The real standout, the only one worth circling on the calendar, is the morning of Friday, July 24th. This is your window. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a solid 4° above average, so you can leave the thick wetsuit at home.
St Agnes will see a clean, glassy start with the wind swinging light from the WSW, almost a dead calm. The swell is a solid 4ft from the WNW, with a long period of 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a solid 454 (moderate), and with that glassy surface, you’re looking at clean, lined-up waves. It’s not going to be huge, but the quality will be there. Just keep in mind the crowds here can be often, so get there early for a peak.
The other day to watch is Sunday, July 26th. It’s a bit more of a gamble. The morning brings a clean 6ft swell from the west with a short 7-second period, and light offshores from the SE. That’s a lot of water moving, but the short period means it’ll be a bit lumpy and less organized. The combined energy is strong at 384. It’s a lot of push, but it’s not the same quality as the 24th. Might be a bit too much for beginners, but for the experienced crew, it could be a fun, punchy session before the wind picks up in the afternoon.
The rest of the forecast is a mixed bag of onshore winds and small, choppy surf. The 27th has some size (8ft) but the wind is cross and the conditions are marginal. The 29th sees another pulse of northwest swell at 7ft, but it’s blown out by cross-onshore winds. Honestly, for the second week, it’s a watch-and-wait game. The only real promise is that Friday morning glass-off.
Stay sharp, and don’t burn your fuel on the flat days.
Rusty.
