The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, giving you the lowdown on what we’ve got coming up on the North Coast. For the next 16 days, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. We start off with a real flat spell, but there’s some serious potential brewing for the very end of the run that you won’t want to miss.
Right off the bat, there’s nothing going on. The first week is a write-off for any decent waves. We’re looking at a stretch from the start right through the 23rd of August with nothing but poor conditions. Wind is onshore or cross-on, and the swell is either small or messy. You’d be wasting your time even looking at it.
Things stay pretty bleak through the 24th and 25th of August. The surf is tiny, with swell height only `0.7ft` and a long period of 14 seconds. It’s glassy on the 24th morning, but there’s just no power. The combined wave energy is a measly `31`. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
Around the 25th, we see a glimmer. There’s a fresh offshore wind from the SSE, and the swell bumps up to `5ft` from the W with a period of 10 seconds. The energy climbs to `394`. It’s marginal but it’s the first real sign of life. The wind stays clean through the afternoon, but it’s still a question mark on quality. The 26th and 27th August are another drop back to choppy, poor surf.
Now, towards the end of the lineup, it gets interesting. St Agnes is the only break on the card, and it’s a fairly consistent spot, so this long dry spell is a bit of an anomaly. The stand-out window hits on the 30th of August. The Sunday morning shows a clean, offshore breeze from the south at just `6 mph`, with a solid `5ft` swell from the west. The period is 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a moderate `272`. It’s not huge, but with that light wind, it’ll be clean and fun for an intermediate. The water temp is about average. This is the best on offer for the first two weeks.
Then, the real highlight. The 1st of September is the one to circle on your calendar. We’ve got a big southwest swell pushing through, `10ft` at 10 seconds from the west, with a combined energy of `1568`. That’s strong stuff. The wind is a moderate offshore from the SSE, cleaning up the face. This is big, powerful swell, over `8ft`, so this one is strictly for the experienced crew. The waves will have plenty of punch. After the 2nd of September, the forecast drops off.
So, to sum it up: the first week and a half is a total flat spell. Wait for the 30th of August for a small, clean session, and then the 1st of September is your big, expert-level reward.
Stay salty,
Rusty
