The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell ya, it’s a bit of a tough stretch here at St Agnes. The finder is pullin’ up a big fat zero for the whole 16-day window, so I’m gonna be straight with ya – there’s nothin’ worth paddlin’ out for. The swell just doesn’t line up with the wind, and when it does, it’s too weak or too messy. It’s a real dry spell, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. Forecasts can always flip, so don’t lose hope.
We’re looking at a long gap of no good surf, right from today, 19 July, all the way through to 3 August. Every single session is flagged as “poor surf conditions.” The water temp’s about average for the time of year, so no weird anomalies there. The first session on Sunday morning, 19 July, is a joke – just 0.7ft of swell from the W with a 7-second period, and the combined energy is a measly 6. That’s not even a wave, that’s a ripple. The wind is offshore from the SSE at 9 mph, which would be clean, but there’s nothin’ to ride.
Through the rest of July and into August, the swell tries to pop up a bit. By Tuesday, 28 July, we see a 5ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period in the morning, and the combined energy climbs to 383 – that’s moderate energy. But it’s onshore wind from the NNW at 9 mph, blowing right onto it, making it a mess. For a beach break like St Agnes, that’s just choppy and ugly. The 5ft is gettin’ a bit stout for beginners, but it’s nothin’ special for anyone else with that wind.
The best lookin’ numbers come on 1 August, when the swell is 4ft from the WNW with a 9-second period and the combined energy is 265. Wind is cross-off from the SW at 19 mph, which keeps it clean. But the direction is off – the optimum swell for St Agnes is WSW, and this is WNW, so it’s not hittin’ the break right. And 19 mph wind is a fresh breeze, makin’ it a bit of a battle. It’s still a no-go from the score.
Look, if you’re a kite surfer, those days with 5ft swell and onshore wind might be worth a look, but for a paddle surfer, this is a write-off. I hate to say it, but there’s nothin’ here for the next 16 days. St Agnes is just sittin’ this one out.
