The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk turkey. It’s Rusty, and I’ve been digging through the numbers for the St. Agnes area. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a long, flat, and blowy road, but there’s a definite light at the end of the tunnel, and I’ll point you right to it.
First thing you need to know is the water's sitting at about 65°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a small win.
Right now, though, the surf is a mess. We're looking at a long stretch of poor conditions kicking off from Tuesday the 18th all the way through to the morning of Monday the 24th. It's a real dry spell. The winds are mostly cross-on or onshore, the waves are chopped up, and the swell is weak to moderate. For instance, Tuesday afternoon has a 5ft swell, but it's a short-period, 6-second wind swell with a 25 km/h cross-on breeze. It’s just junk.
We get a little tease on the morning of Tuesday the 25th. The wind goes light offshore from the south at 6 mph. The swell is a modest 3ft from the WNW with a 10-second period, and it’s clean. The report calls it "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is a step up from the garbage we've been seeing, but it's not going to get your heart racing.
Then it’s back to the choppy, messy stuff.
The real story, the part that has me stoked, is the very end of the forecast. We’ve got a promising run starting on the morning of Monday the 31st of August. The wind is going to be a cross-off from the SW at 9 mph, the swell is 5ft from the WSW with a 7-second period, and it’s clean. The report says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the first real sign of life in a long time.
But the standout, the one you want to circle on your calendar, is the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September. We’ve got a solid 6ft swell from the W with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a hefty 1123. The wind is light, from the S at 12 mph, and it’s cross-off. It’s clean and it’s got some real power. This is the biggest, cleanest swell we’ve seen in the entire 16-day window. The afternoon is also looking good with a 7ft swell from the WSW, also clean, so if you can only get one session, make it this one.
The days after, the 2nd of September, still have some clean waves, but the energy drops off. It’s not bad, but it’s not the epic day that the 1st is promising to be.
So, here’s the bottom line: The next week is a wash. Don't even bother. Set your alarm for the 31st of August, but be ready for the 1st of September. That looks like the real deal. It’s a bit of a long-range call, so treat it with a little caution, but the signs are all pointing in the right direction.
This spot is fairly consistent and pretty exposed to that WSW swell, so when the wind finally plays nice, it’s well worth the wait. Hang tight.
Rusty.
