The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for St Agnes.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week and a half is pretty grim. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing worth paddling out for. From Friday the 17th right through to Sunday the 26th, it’s a real struggle. Tiny waves, bad wind directions, and just no energy in the water. There’s a few mornings with clean-ish conditions, like the 19th, 21st, 23rd, and 25th, but the swell is tiny – we’re talking 0.7 ft to 3 ft. That’s not surf, that’s a bathtub ripple. The wind is light and offshore out of the east a few times, but with no swell to work with, it’s a tease.
The water temperature is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Now, things finally start to look a bit more interesting heading into the end of the month. On Sunday the 26th, we get a bit of a pulse. The morning shows a clean 4 ft from the WNW with a light offshore wind, but the energy is still pretty weak (108). The afternoon improves a little – 4 ft, clean, light offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy climbs to 111, still weak. The commentary says "surfable but very ordinary" and I’d agree. It’s a start.
Monday the 27th sees a jump in size, but the wind swings onshore. The morning has 5 ft from the W, but it’s cross-shore and a bit messy. By the afternoon it’s 6 ft and cross-onshore, choppy. The energy is building (344), but the conditions are poor.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is looking like Thursday the 30th of July. The morning is a monster. We’re looking at a 13 ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is absolutely massive at 3703. The wind is light and cross-onshore from the NNE, but the report says the wind and tide are favorable. Now, here’s the catch – and I gotta be honest with you – 13 ft is huge. The report itself says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. This is expert-only territory. If you’re not a seasoned charger, sit this one on the beach and watch. The afternoon is similar, 12 ft, still too big for most.
The best chance for the average surfer in this whole 16-day window comes on Friday the 31st of July. The morning shows a 8 ft swell from the WNW, with a period of 8 seconds. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the east, keeping it clean. The energy is 622 – that’s a solid, moderate pulse. The commentary says "expect good surf conditions". This is the one. It’s still a big swell for beginners at over 7 ft, but for an intermediate surfer, this is the best on offer. The wind is clean, the swell has some power, and it’s the most promising window we’ve seen all forecast.
After that, Saturday the 1st of August drops back down to 4 ft to 5 ft, with a nasty cross-shore wind picking up to 19 mph in the afternoon. It’s not worth it.
So, to wrap it up: a long, flat start, a massive but dangerous swell on the 30th, and then one decent, clean morning on the 31st. That’s your window.
Rusty.
