The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Looks like we’ve got a bit of a flat spell on the horizon for St Agnes, but don’t write it off just yet. The next couple of weeks are mostly a write-off for decent waves, but there’s a glimmer of hope if you’re patient.
Right now and through the rest of August, it’s pretty grim. We’ve got onshore winds and messy, choppy conditions. The water temperature is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’s pleasant for a paddle. The swell energy is weak for most of this period, with readings around 243 (Friday morning) dropping to just 49 (Saturday morning). There’s a tiny window on Sunday the 23rd morning with a clean 1 ft swell from the SW, period a long 14 seconds, and light ENE winds, but it’s barely surfable – the energy is only 65. That’s more of a longboard chill session than anything exciting.
The real downer is the wind. Most days are plagued by cross-onshore or onshore breezes, gusting up to 28 mph on the 24th. That’s kite-surfing weather, not paddle-surfing. The swell direction is mostly W to WNW, but the optimum for St Agnes is WSW, so we’re not getting the best angle either.
Wednesday the 26th afternoon is the only standout in the whole 16-day window. We’ll see a 5 ft SSW swell arrive, with a period of 8 seconds and moderate energy of 345. The wind will be light and cross-offshore from the SSW, making for clean conditions. It’s not huge, but it’s the best we’ll get – expect good surf conditions. That’s your one session to mark in the diary.
After that, it’s back to poor conditions. The 29th sees a bigger 8 ft swell from the W, but with cross-onshore winds at 16 mph, it’ll be choppy and messy – better left for the experts or the kites. The first week of September is more of the same: small, weak, and windy. The 3rd of September afternoon brings a 7 ft WSW swell with strong offshore winds, but the energy is moderate at 612, and the wind is a solid 28 mph – again, more for the experienced crew.
Honestly, if you’re keen, the 26th afternoon is your best bet. Otherwise, it’s a long wait. The blank run is pretty normal for this area, and forecasts can change. Stay tuned.
Rusty.
