The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you about Duckpool Bay. Over the next 16 days – from July 15 right through to July 30 – there’s just nothing worth paddling out for. The surf is consistently poor, with tiny waves and messy conditions. This spot is inconsistent at the best of times, so this blank run is pretty normal for the area. Don’t get your hopes up.
On Wednesday the 15th, we’ve got a tiny 1-foot W swell with a 10-second period, but the wind is offshore from the east at 16 mph, so the surface looks clean – but the wave height is barely a ripple. The combined energy is only 30, so there’s no power. Water temp is sitting at 64.4°, which is 4.1° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s notably warm, but it doesn’t help the waves.
Thursday the 16th stays small, 1-foot W with short 8-second period, cross-off wind. Still nothing. Friday the 17th has glassy conditions in the morning – 1-foot W, period 8s, but still no size. Saturday the 18th sees a bump to 2-foot from the NNW with a 4-second period – that’s windswell, short and weak. Energy is 24. It’s cross-shore wind, so choppy. Sunday the 19th offers clean offshore wind from the east at 12 mph on the 2-foot NNW swell, but again, period is only 5 seconds – no push.
The following week continues in the same vein: small waves, cross-shore or onshore winds, and low energy. The biggest swell arrives on Wednesday July 30 – a 5-foot W swell with a 6-second period and onshore wind from the west at 9-12 mph. Energy climbs to 183, but the wind is onshore and the period is short, so it’s going to be a messy, choppy mess. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a surf session – if that’s your thing, maybe check it out.
Otherwise, I’d give this stretch a miss. There’s no standout day. The water is warm, sure, but the waves just aren’t playing along. Keep an eye
