The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get this out there. It’s Rusty.

Honestly, looking at the next 16 days for our stretch of coast, it’s a pretty grim picture. I’m not going to sugarcoat it. There’s a lot of onshore wind and chop on the horizon, and most of the time, the swell is just too weak to make anything worthwhile. We’re staring down a long, frustrating stretch before we see anything even close to decent.

The first real chance of even getting wet comes around Saturday the 22nd. We’ve got a tiny 1ft of west swell with a 9-second period, but a cross-shore N wind will have it all chopped up. Water temps are at 66°, which is a couple of degrees warmer than usual for this time of year, so it’ll feel nice, but the surf won't be worth the paddle out. That’s a big zero.

Sunday the 23rd offers a tiny window. Early morning we have a small 0.7ft WSW groundswell with a long 14-second period and a light offshore ENE breeze. It’s clean and glassy, but it’s just ankle-biters. Not worth getting too excited about. A few more small waves on Tuesday the 25th afternoon, again with clean offshore winds, but still basically flat.

As we head into the end of the month, the swell tries to pick up, but the wind turns against us. Thursday the 27th sees some energy come in, but it’s short-period and bumpy. Friday the 28th onwards it gets worse, with the swell building to 5ft on Friday morning, but it’s coming with a cross-onshore wind and it’s a complete mess. The weekend of the 29th and 30th is a write-off: 7ft of wind-whipped slop on Saturday and strong onshore winds. This isn’t surfing, it’s a washing machine. Honestly, if this is what you’re into, you’d have more fun on a kite than a surfboard.

The first week of September is more of the same. The swell drops, but the wind doesn’t let up. We see periods of clean offshore winds early on Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, but the swell is gutless. It’s not until Tuesday the 1st of September that we see any kind of change, but even then, it’s just onshore winds and weak waves.

Looking further out, there’s a subtle shift mid-week, with a pulse of long-period energy on Wednesday the 2nd, but it’s detached from any real wind or size. The following weekend is a mess of strong onshore winds and rain, with the surf quality just being poor. So, all in all, there are no standouts here. Not a single day where I’d say, “drop everything and go.” We’ll have to wait for the forecast to change, because this run is pretty bleak.

Rusty.
