The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer.
Honestly, looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a bit of a grim picture for Duckpool Bay. The wave energy is just pathetic for days on end, and when it does start to show a pulse, the wind turns against us. We’re looking at a long stretch of near-flat conditions from the start of the forecast right through to the end of the month. For the first week, we’re talking tiny, weak swells with combined energies barely scraping 50 or 60 – that’s just not enough to get excited about. The water temp is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The first time we see any real grunt is on the morning of Thursday the 27th of August. The swell jumps to 4 ft from the SW, with a combined energy of 163 – moderate, at least – but the wind is a cross-shore from the south at 16 mph. It’s messy, and the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. That afternoon gets worse as the wind swings cross-onshore.
Friday the 28th of August morning is the first time we get a sniff of something surfable. The swell is 4 ft from the SW with a period of 9 seconds, giving us a combined energy of 240. The wind is light from the north, just a slight air, so it’s clean enough. But the call is still only “marginal” – the tide or something else is probably messing it up. It’s a long way from a standout.
After that, it’s back to onshore slop for days. Saturday the 29th of August sees the biggest swell of the whole run, 7 ft from the west, with a huge energy of 535, but it’s being smashed by a strong 22-25 mph onshore wind. That’s blown-out chaos, only for the hardcore or the kite crew. Sunday and Monday don’t look any better.
We skip into September, and there’s a glimmer on the morning of Thursday the 3rd. The swell is 6 ft from the west, period 7 seconds, energy of 287 – moderate to strong. The wind is a light cross-shore from the SSW. Again, it’s only called “marginal.” The period is short, so the waves will be a bit weak and crumbly. Still, it’s the best of a bad lot for the whole 16 days.
Honestly, if you’re desperate, that Thursday the 3rd of September morning is your best bet. It’s the only time we have a reasonable sized swell with light wind. But don’t expect anything special. This is a blank run that’s pretty normal for this area when the wind locks in from the wrong direction.
Rusty.
