The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, talkin’ Duckpool Bay in imperial. Straight up – there’s nothin’ for the next two weeks. From July 19 all the way to August 3, every single report says poor surf conditions. That’s a solid 16 days of flat or blown-out junk. The water’s a touch warmer than average for this time of year – 64°F with a 4°F positive anomaly – so it’s comfy for a swim, but not for surfing. The break itself is inconsistent anyway, so a dry spell like this is normal, but still a letdown.
Let’s take it day by day. Sunday July 19 starts with a tiny 1ft NNW swell, period 5 seconds, and a light cross-off breeze – clean but barely any energy (13). Afternoon goes glassy but still puny. Monday the 20th: 2ft, 4-second period, cross-off wind, energy 24. Not worth it. Tuesday the 21st: 1.0ft W swell with 10-second period, but wind shifts cross later, energy in the 30s. Wednesday the 22nd gets a little bump to 3ft from the north, but period only 5 seconds and moderate cross-on wind makes it choppy. Thursday and Friday drop to 2ft and 0.3ft – onshore winds, terrible. Saturday July 25 has a 0.3ft SW swell in the morning, then 2ft W swell in the afternoon but cross-on and choppy.
Then Sunday July 26 – the biggest swell of the whole stretch: 6ft from the WSW, period 6 seconds, combined energy 275. But the wind is a moderate cross-on at 12 mph, and the surf is junk – messy and blown out. Monday the 27th: 6ft WNW swell, energy 308, but cross-on winds up to 19 mph – still junk. Tuesday the 28th: 4ft, cross wind, poor. The rest of the week fades into tiny stuff with onshore winds. Even Saturday August 1 sees a 4ft NNW swell but cross-on, energy 116, and it’s still “poor surf conditions”. The final days – August 2 and 3 – are back to 2ft or less, with light winds but no real swell.
So no standout. The only size appears on July 26 and 27, but the wind kills it. Even the biggest swell at 6ft isn’t huge, but with cross-on chop it’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one. Sorry, crew – this one’s a total write-off. Keep an eye on the forecast, but for now, leave the quiver in the shed.
Rusty.
