The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Duckpool Bay is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak, and messy conditions, so don't expect much for a while. The wave energy is almost non-existent to start, barely registering a pulse (56 to 59), and the swell is basically a memory with a period of 18 seconds on a 0.6ft lump. That long period on a beach setup just means long waits for nothing. Water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We kick off on Tuesday, 14th July with a morning that’s clean with a moderate offshore breeze, but the swell is laughable at 0.6ft from the WSW. It’s surfable in the sense you can bob around, but it’s not a wave. The afternoon turns to a cross-off breeze, but still, 0.6ft is just a ripple. Wednesday, 15th July, the morning has a bit more size (1.0ft from the W) but the period drops to 10 seconds, and the energy is gutless (30). Still clean with offshore wind, but it’s a struggle.
The rest of the first week and into the second is a death march of poor surf. Thursday, 16th through to Saturday, 25th July, we’re looking at wave heights bouncing between 0.3ft and 3ft, mostly with messy cross-shore or cross-onshore winds. The combined energy stays in the low double digits – pathetic. There’s a brief moment on Tuesday, 21st July morning where it goes glassy, with a 1.0ft W swell and 10-second period, but it’s still just a flat spell. The spot is inconsistent and rarely breaks, so this is a normal blank run for this area.
The picture changes a bit as we head into the final week. On Sunday, 26th July, the swell finally shows some life. The morning sees 4ft from the W with a 7-second period, and the energy jumps to a moderate 157. The catch? It’s onshore, so it’s going to be lumpy. By Monday, 27th July, we’re at 6ft from the W with 8-second period, and the energy is now strong (421). This is real swell, but it’s coming with a strong cross-onshore breeze (12-15 mph), making it choppy and blown out. It’s too big for beginners, and for experts, the wind is wrecking the shape. The setup is a beach, so if you’re a kite surfer, this might look interesting, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a write-off. Tuesday, 28th July, brings light rain and a fresh cross-onshore breeze (22 mph) with the swell dropping to 5ft, and the energy still moderate (281). It’s ugly.
The closest thing to a standout? You’d have to be desperate. Maybe Monday, 27th July, has the biggest swell (6ft), but the wind is just too strong and wrong. The optimum swell direction for Duckpool Bay is W, and that’s what we’re getting, but the onshore wind kills it. Honestly, the best on offer is back on Tuesday, 14th July, with the clean morning conditions, but there’s no wave. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a flat, windy reality.
Rusty.
