The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our little corner of the coast.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a rough start. The first solid week or so is a write-off for any decent surf. We’re looking at a gap of about a week before we even get a sniff of something rideable. The wind is howling from the north-west, the swell is messy, and it’s all just a big lumpy, choppy mess. Not your day for a paddle.
The first real chance you’ll get to wet a line is on Saturday the 22nd of August. Early morning at Duckpool Bay we’ve got a bit of a window. The wind swings around to a light offshore from the east, which is a massive plus. The surf is tiny, though, only about 2ft coming from the west. The combined energy is weak (93), so don't expect any power. It’s rideable, but it’s very ordinary. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
After that brief glimmer, it’s back to flatness and poor conditions right through the following week. We’re talking tiny, weak swells and onshore winds. It’s a real patience tester.
Now, if you’re looking for something to circle on the calendar, the week after might offer a bit of a pulse. By Sunday the 30th of August, the morning shows a bit of promise. The swell picks up to 6ft from the west-southwest, and the wind is a clean cross-offshore from the south. The combined energy hits a moderate 422. It’s still a marginal call, but that’s the best we’ve got in this run. The swell period is a short 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but the clean wind gives it a chance.
Then it gets a bit wild. The last day of the month, Monday the 31st of August, and the first day of September, we see a big spike in swell. The energy jumps to a massive 2258, with 10ft waves from the west. But hold your horses – the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, the surf quality is poor, and that’s expert-only territory. The period is 11 seconds, so it’s got some grunt. For most of us, this is a watching day, or maybe a kite-surfing day if that’s your thing.
So for the best bet, I’d say the morning of Sunday the 30th of August at Duckpool Bay is the standout, but it’s a long way off and not a certainty. The clean offshore wind on Saturday the 22nd is a nice little teaser, but the swell is just too small. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, because this one looks like a slow burn.
Rusty.
