The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. Straight up, I’ll be honest – it’s a pretty grim stretch for surf at Duckpool Bay. We’ve got a long, dry run of nothing much happening, so don’t get your hopes up. The first real chance of anything worth talking about doesn’t come until way down the track.
The pattern is a tale of low energy and poor conditions. The swell is mostly weak, with a lot of short-period, local windswell. The energy is rarely above moderate, with combined swell energy readings often in the low hundreds or even just two digits – that’s weak stuff. For most of the forecast, the wind is either howling onshore or cross-shore, just making a mess of things. The water temperature is sitting at 66°, which is a notable 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – a bit of a surprise, but it doesn’t make the waves any better.
We have a few days of tiny, clean conditions around the 22nd and 24th of August, with light offshore winds, but the swell is barely a ripple – 1 ft to 1.0 ft. It’s surfable in the sense you could paddle around, but don’t expect a wave you can actually ride. You’d be better off on a longboard with a lot of patience.
The only standout, and I mean the *only* one, arrives on the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August. The swell bumps up to 8 ft from the SW, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a solid pulse of energy – the combined energy is a massive 1632, which is strong. The wind is offshore from the SE, which should keep things pretty clean. This is a big wave though, over 8 ft, so this is strictly for experienced surfers only. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" an issue, so expect a few others who’ve been waiting for the same thing. This is the one day to circle on the calendar, but it’s a long way out, so treat it as promising but not guaranteed.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. The wind swings around again, the swell drops, and we’re looking at poor surf conditions right through the end of the month and into September. There’s a gap of several days from the 26th of August right through to the 2nd of September with nothing worth getting out of bed for. A few morning sessions on the 27th and 28th of August show clean, offshore winds, but the swell is pathetic – under 3 ft and weak energy. It’s just not going to happen.
So, bottom line: one big day on the 25th of August for the experts, and a whole lot of flat and grotty otherwise. That’s the lot, folks.
Rusty.
