The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again, but this time in feet and knots for the imperial crew. Let’s talk Duckpool Bay. The upshot is grim: a long, drawn-out stretch of tiny, messy or howling onshore junk. Nothing here will get your heart racing. Water temp is about 66°, which is a solid 4° warmer than normal – feels like a little tropical pocket on the south coast, but the waves don’t match the vibe.

Thursday the 20th is a write-off: rain showers and a 19-knot cross-onshore with 6ft of lumpy west swell. Moderate energy (478), but the wind has it blown out. Friday and Saturday are tiny – 3ft dropping to 1ft – and the wind stays on it or cross-shore. Saturday morning the 22nd has a brief clean window with a light offshore, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft with a 10-second period and weak energy (72). You’d be lucky to find a knee-high lump. There’s a long gap after that through Sunday, Monday, Tuesday – several days with barely a ripple. Periods up to 14 seconds but swell height just 0.6ft. Energy drops to single digits. Not worth a second look.

Things perk up a touch around Wednesday the 26th, but it’s still poor. A short-period (6 seconds) south-west swell bumps to 3ft with moderate energy (117), but a fresh 19-knot cross-shore ruins it. Cleaner Wednesday afternoon with a 2ft west swell and cross-off wind, but still small. The rest of that week stays around 3ft with cross-onshore breeze.

The real event is Saturday the 29th of August. A 8ft cross-shore south-west swell hits with strong energy (705), but the period is short at 7 seconds and the wind is moderate cross-shore creating chop. By Saturday afternoon it jumps to 12ft (2114 – very strong energy) but it’s a full onshore 19-knot westerly. That’s a washing machine. The standout – and it’s a cautious one – is Sunday the 30th morning. A 10ft west swell with 9-second period, strong energy (1699), and a gentle 8-knot cross-onshore. The comment says wind and tide are favourable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. For an inconsistent intermediate spot, 10ft of west swell with that power is expert-only territory. Given the beach setup, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than a clean surf.

Early September keeps the swell size up (7ft to 10ft) but wind is generally on it or cross-onshore, and the period is short. Friday the 4th of September morning shows a faint glimmer: a 8ft west swell with 8-second period, moderate energy (727), and a clean cross-off north-northeast breeze. Still a long way out and short period, so it’ll be lumpy. Nothing here is a true standout for a surfer – the only window that might make you paddle out is Sunday the 30th morning, but that’s for the big-wave crew only. Best to wait.

Rusty.
