The Lowdown

Right, mate, Rusty here, and I’ve had a proper look at what’s coming our way down at Duckpool Bay. Gotta be straight with you – it's a grim stretch ahead. For the next 16 days, nearly every session gets a thumbs down. There’s no big, clean, lined-up swell to get excited about. The wind is mostly a problem, coming onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell just doesn't have any quality to it. We’re looking at a long, dry patch with hardly any real windows of opportunity.

Let’s run through it. It kicks off Wednesday afternoon, the 19th of August, but don't bother paddling out. We've got a 4ft swell wrapping from the west with a short period of 6 seconds, and a stiff 19 mph onshore wind. The combined energy is weak at 114, and it’s just poor surf conditions. The water’s a balmy 66°, which is a massive 4° warmer than normal – that’s very unusual, a proper warm anomaly for the time of year.

The next few days don't get any better. Thursday the 20th sees the swell bump up to 7ft, but it’s a mess with a stiff cross-onshore wind. The energy climbs to moderate (478), but the period is still short and the wind kills it. Friday and Saturday are similar stories – small, chopped-out, and unrideable. We get a tiny glimmer on Saturday morning, the 22nd, with a 2ft swell and a light cross-offshore breeze, but it’s barely surfable and gets a score of just 1. Not worth getting wet for.

Then we hit a proper dead zone. From the 23rd of August all the way through to the morning of the 27th, the swell is tiny – under 2ft – with long periods of 13-14 seconds but almost no energy (values down in the teens and thirties). The wind is offshore, but there’s simply nothing to ride. That’s a solid 4-day gap with nothing doing.

There’s a slight pulse on the 27th morning with a 4ft west swell, but the period is short at 6 seconds, and the energy is only 175. The wind is cross-off, but the conditions are still rated as poor. Thursday afternoon the 27th brings a 3ft swell with a decent 10-second period and 195 energy, but it’s cross-shore wind and choppy. The end of the month into September looks similar: a few pulses of 5ft to 6ft swell with moderate energy (between 284 and 466), but the wind is always onshore or cross-onshore, creating lumpy, choppy, poor conditions.

The only slightly better moment shows up on the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. We get a 3ft swell from the southwest with a 10-second period and moderate energy at 237. The wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze from the south. It’s only rated as marginal, not good. That’s as close to a “best of a bad bunch” as it gets.

So, look, there are no true standouts here. No epic session to chase. For a break that’s inconsistent and rarely shows quality, this is a fairly normal blank run. Don’t be too disheartened, the forecasts can change. But right now, Duckpool Bay is a no-go for the paddle crew. If the wind stays up and the swell’s messy with a beach setup, it might look more interesting for the kite crowd than us. Hang tight.

Rusty.
