The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Duckpool Bay over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch.
The overall pattern is pretty grim. We’ve got a long, long run of tiny, weak swell and messy wind. For the first 12 days or so, the wave heights are barely flickering above 1ft, and the energy is pathetic – we’re talking values as low as 12 (weak energy) for most of that time. The only sliver of a chance comes on the morning of Saturday the 18th, when a tiny 3ft swell shows up from the NNW with a period of just 5 seconds. The wind is a clean offshore from the NNE at 15 km/h, so the surface will be clean. But honestly, it’s a knee-high dribbler with zero punch. The combined energy is only 43 (weak energy), so it’s barely surfable for a longboarder in a patient mood. The water is a whopping 66°F – that’s 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year, which is very unusual, so you can ditch the thick wetsuit if you’re keen.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. The morning of Saturday the 25th offers a similar window: 2ft from the west, with a 6-second period, light NE breeze at 5 km/h, and clean conditions. The energy is still only 60 (weak). It’s another longboard special, nothing more.
Then, around the 27th of July, the swell finally shows up. Monday morning the 27th sees a proper 7ft swell from the west, with an 8-second period and combined energy of 510 (strong wave energy). That’s a real jump. But here’s the kicker – the wind is a cross-shore from the south at 25 km/h, and it stays messy all the way through to the 29th. The swell drops to 6ft on Tuesday the 28th and 4ft on Wednesday the 29th, but the wind keeps it lumpy and cross-chop. For a beach setup like Duckpool, this is more of a kite surfer’s dream than a paddle surfer’s.
The standout on offer? If you’re a dedicated, experienced local who knows the bank shifts, the morning of Monday the 27th of July is the only window with real size. 7ft from the west is a solid wave, but it’s cross-shore and choppy, so it’ll be a battle. The water’s still warm, but you’ll be fighting the wind. It’s not a classic, but it’s the only game in town for size.
For the rest of the 16-day window, it’s a long, blank run. There’s simply nothing worth paddling out for until that late July bump. The spot is listed as inconsistent, so this kind of long gap isn’t a total shocker. Keep your eyes on the charts, but for now, you might be better off waxing your board and waiting for a better forecast.
Rusty.
