The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Duckpool Bay is a tough one to swallow. We’ve got a long stretch of very small, weak, and messy conditions. The first few days are basically a write-off, so don’t bother getting your hopes up until the very end of the run.
We’re looking at a flat spell from Wednesday the 15th of July all the way through to Friday the 24th of July. For over a week, the swell is tiny, mostly around 0.3 ft to 2 ft, with very weak combined wave energy (often under 40). The winds are all over the place – cross, cross-off, cross-on – and it’s just not making anything rideable. The surf is poor, and the energy is simply not there. There’s a little blip on Saturday the 25th of July, but even then, it’s not great.
The only real event in the whole outlook happens over the weekend of the 25th and 26th of July. On Saturday morning, the swell picks up to 5 ft from the NNW, with a combined energy of 152 (moderate). That’s the biggest swell we’ll see, but it’s coming in with a cross-on wind, and it’s a short period of 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit of a washing machine. By Saturday afternoon, the energy jumps to 222 (moderate), but the swell drops to 4 ft and the wind turns onshore. It’s not going to be clean, but it’s the only real size on offer. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this is a rare break.
If you’re a beginner, that 5 ft on Saturday morning might be a bit much, but it’s not out of control. For experts, it’s the only window that offers any power, though the messy winds will keep it from being great. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
After that, it’s right back to tiny, poor surf through the end of the month. Honestly, the setup here looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, given the onshore winds and small, choppy waves.
Rusty.
