The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let’s cut through the noise and look at this next stretch of time. It’s going to be a test of patience, that’s for sure. We’ve got waves, but the wind is going to be the main character for most of this show, and it’s not a hero.
Right off the bat, Tuesday the 18th, we see that west-northwest wind, 12 mph, blowing right onshore. There's a 4ft swell, but it’s messy. The water is about 66°F, which is nearly 4°F warmer than average for this time of year. That’s unusual and you’ll feel it when you get in.
Wednesday and Thursday just keep the trend going. Thursday morning the swell actually picks up to a solid 7ft with a moderate wave energy of 503, but that fresh cross-onshore wind at 19 mph is going to have it all chopped up and lumpy. It's going to be a battle, not a pleasure cruise.
Friday the 21st is the first day that looks halfway decent. The swell settles down to a gentle 3ft, and we finally see a cross-offshore breeze at 9 mph. It should be clean, but the energy is weak and the period is short. It’s surfable, but it’s pretty average.
Then it’s back to the grind. The weekend and the start of next week are just poor. The swell gets tiny and the wind stays messy. We even get a day of glassy conditions on Monday the 24th, but there’s only 1ft of swell. It’s flat. There’s a long stretch here, about a week, where there really is nothing good on offer.
The only thing that keeps me from writing this whole thing off is the swell that shows up on the 29th and 30th. We’re looking at a solid 6ft+ swell with a strong energy reading of 542, but again, the wind is just going to ruin it. It’s cross-on or onshore, so it’s going to be rough, bumpy, and tough to handle. This one is for the experts only, and even they might be better off watching from the cliff.
This bad run carries right into September. There’s plenty of size early in the month, but the wind remains a problem. With all this wind and wave action, the setup here is looking a whole lot more interesting for the kite surfers than it is for us with our paddles.
It's a bleak outlook for quality surf. But you know what? This place doesn't stay flat forever. It’s a blank run, but forecasts can change. A slight shift in that wind could flip the whole script.
Rusty, out.
