The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about what’s on the menu for Duckpool Bay over the next couple of weeks. To be honest, it’s a pretty grim stretch of small, weak surf with a lot of wind problems. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out period of tiny waves and messy conditions right through the end of July, with only a couple of late-flurry ideas that might offer something.

The whole opening week is a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. We’re talking ankle-snappers to knee-high slop, mostly under 2 ft, with a combined energy that barely registers (values like 23 to 59). The wind is a constant headache—shifting between cross-off and cross-shore, and often a moderate breeze. It’s clean enough for a splash on a few mornings, like Tuesday the 14th with a 0.7 ft swell from the WSW, but that’s just a tiny wave with no push. The 18-second period on that Tuesday morning (energy 56) is a long-period groundswell, but with such a tiny height, it’s just a slow, rolling ripple. Nothing to get excited about.

The second week doesn’t get much better until the very end. We’ve got a gap of several days with no real recommendations. The surf stays poor, with heights barely scraping 2 ft and the wind mostly cross or cross-onshore. It’s not until Saturday the 25th that we see a little bump, with a 4 ft W swell, period 6 seconds, and a combined energy of 127 (moderate). The morning has a gentle cross-shore breeze, so it’s not completely blown out, but that short period (6 seconds) means it’s going to be a fat, weak, close-out wave at this beach setup. It’s still pretty poor overall.

The only real standout, and I’m using that term loosely, comes on Sunday the 26th. The afternoon sees a 3 ft swell from the WNW, with a longer period of 11 seconds and a combined energy of 274 (moderate). That’s a bit more grunt. But, and it’s a big but, the wind is a moderate cross-onshore breeze from the WNW, which is going to chop it up. It’s a better swell, but the conditions won’t do it any favours. For a true expert only, the Monday the 27th morning has a 5 ft W swell with a short 7-second period (energy 343), but it’s onshore, rainy, and 19 mph. That’s just a messy, lumpy, blown-out wall. Not a recommendation.

So, what’s the best of a bad bunch? Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, Sunday the 26th afternoon at Duckpool Bay is the one. The swell has some length (11 seconds) and the energy is moderate (274), but you’ll be surfing with a cross-onshore breeze. Don’t expect any kind of quality. Everything else is a no-go for a good surf. The water temperature is 66°F, which is a massive 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year—that’s a real anomaly, you’ll be sweating in your wettie.

Rusty.
