The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow burner for Duckpool Bay. The first week and a half is pretty grim. You’ve got a whole lot of tiny, weak waves with messy winds, and nothing really worth paddling out for. From Tuesday the 14th right through to Saturday the 25th, the scores are all rock bottom. It’s just small, poor quality surf day after day, with onshore or cross-shore winds messing up what little there is. There’s a real gap there of about 12 days where you’re better off doing something else.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Sunday the 26th, and that’s where the standout lies. For the morning, we’ve got a clean 6ft swell from the west, with a light offshore breeze. The combined energy is solid at 287, and it’s glassy by the afternoon, with a 5ft west swell. That’s your best window, no question. The water is a very unusual 66°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you won’t need a thick suit.
The 27th holds some decent size too, with 6ft on Monday morning and an offshore wind, but the energy is ramping up to 516, so it’ll be pushing into proper grunty territory. The period is short, around 9 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and fast, but still clean. If you’re an experienced local, you’ll have fun. Beginners might find the 6ft size a bit much, especially with that short period making it dumpy.
The 28th drops off a bit, but Tuesday morning goes glassy with a 4ft west swell. It’s a nice little window for a quieter session before the wind turns onshore again.
So, to be straight with you: don’t even bother until Sunday the 26th. That’s your day. The 27th is also promising if you’re up for a bit more power. The rest of the forecast is a write-off for paddle surfing. The break is inconsistent and exposed, so when it does show, it’s a treat, but you’ve got to be patient.
Rusty.
