The Lowdown
Alright, mate. Rusty here with the long-range look for Duckpool Bay. Let’s be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead. The swell shows up at times, but the wind and conditions are mostly against us. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but there’s a big quiet patch right in the middle where it goes almost flat for several days. Let’s get into it.
We kick off the period Monday, the 17th of August. There’s some small swell, around 3 ft from the west, but a light cross-onshore breeze makes it pretty ordinary. The water is sitting at 66°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a notable little anomaly that’ll make the dawn paddle a bit more pleasant. But honestly, the surf is poor with weak energy (73).
Tuesday the 18th sees a bump to 5 ft from the west, but again, we’ve got a moderate cross-onshore wind and short 6-second period. Combined energy hits moderate levels (169), but the chop is pretty ugly. Not worth getting wet.
Wednesday the 19th is the first real pulse of swell – 6 ft to 7 ft from the west, period stretching to 7 seconds. This is where energy jumps up (289 to 395), but it’s all onshore at 18 to 22 mph. That’s blown-out, messy conditions. A little too big for beginners, but experts won’t want it in this wind.
Thursday the 20th keeps the 6 ft west swell but shifts to a cross-onshore wind. Choppy, a bit rough. Still no good.
Now here’s the standout – Friday morning, the 21st of August. It’s small, only 2 ft from the west, but the wind turns light and cross-offshore from the NNE. The period is 8 seconds. Energy is weak (80), but the conditions clean right up. This is the pick of the first week – a small, clean window for a longboard or a fun fish. Pride of place goes to Friday morning. Crowds are only sometimes a problem here, so you might get it to yourself.
After that, we drop right off. Saturday the 22nd has a flash of 3 ft but it’s cross-off and messy. Sunday the 23rd is tiny – 1 ft from the west with a 14-second period on Sunday afternoon. That long-period groundswell is too long for this beach-and-reef setup; it’ll break too straight. Energy is almost dead (42–48). From Monday the 24th through to Tuesday the 25th, it’s barely a ripple – 1 ft and then 0.3 ft. That’s a dry spell of about 4 days.
Wednesday the 26th sees a little lift – 5 ft from the WSW with 8-second period, light cross-onshore wind, and moderate energy (284). It’s marginal, but there’s a hint of life. The 28th of August, Friday, brings the most powerful swell of the whole run: 7 ft from the west-southwest, 10-second period, combined energy roaring up to 878. That’s strong wave energy, but it’s all onshore wind. The size and power are there for experienced surfers only, but the onshore wind will chop it up. It’s a tough call – possibly the best raw swell, but not clean.
The final days on the 30th and 31st have more solid west swell – 7 ft to 8 ft, with energy over 700. Again, the wind is onshore or cross-onshore, and there’s even a risk of storms. Not the clean conditions we want.
So for the whole 16-day window, the only real standout is Friday morning, the 21st of August. It’s small, clean, and has that light offshore touch. Everything else is either blown-out, too small, or too short-period. It’s a tough forecast, but that one morning might just give you a glassy little session.
Stay salty,
Rusty.
