The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get straight into it. Honestly, looking at the next 16 days for Duckpool Bay, it's a tough stretch. There's really not a single day that stands out as good. The whole period is a write-off for any kind of decent surf, so we're looking at a solid gap with nothing on offer.
The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Unsurprisingly, the swell is tiny for the most part, and when it does pick up a little, the wind is all wrong.
We start off with nothing on Sunday the 19th. A tiny 1ft swell from the NNW with a short 5 second period, and a combined wave energy of just (13). The morning has a light SE breeze, but the afternoon goes glassy with a 0.3ft swell – totally flat.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are more of the same. Small, weak swells in the 1.0ft to 1ft range. The wind is cross or cross-offshore, keeping it clean looking, but there's just no power. The energy readings are weak, around (16) to (33).
Mid-week, from the 22nd to the 25th, we see a slight bump. Swell heights get up to 3ft from the N and NW, but the period is a shocking 4 to 5 seconds. The wind turns cross-on or onshore, chopping it up. Wave energy stays low, hitting (47) at best. These are short-period, wind-affected waves – not worth paddling out for.
The 26th of July is the only time the swell gets over 3ft. We see a 5ft swell from the W on Sunday morning, with a slightly better 7 second period. The combined energy jumps to (168), which is moderate. But the wind is onshore from the W at 9 mph. That's going to turn those waves into a messy, crumbly shorebreak. Not a good look.
From the 27th of July right through to the end of the period on August 3rd, it's back to small, poor-quality swells. The heights are consistently under 3ft, and the wind rarely gets offshore. Most days have a cross-onshore flow, creating a choppy surface.
To be blunt, there’s nothing to get excited about here. For this entire 16-day window, you're better off leaving the board in the car. The setup looks more interesting for a bit of a cruise on a sup or a kite than for any kind of quality paddle surfing.
Rusty.
