The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here.
Well, to be honest, this is a tough one. We’re looking at a pretty bleak stretch ahead for the Duckpool Bay area. The first few days are just tiny, weak dribble. The swell energy is barely registering (40), and it’s not going to get you excited. The water is notably warmer than usual for this time of year, sitting at 66°F, which is a couple of degrees above the norm, so at least a dip won’t be a shock to the system.
Sunday morning, the 23rd of August, is about as good as it gets early on, and that’s not saying much. You’ve got a tiny 0.7ft swell from the WSW with a very long 14-second period, and a light offshore breeze from the east making it glassy clean. But it’s so small it’s barely rideable on a log. It’s inconsistent, and crowds are possible here. The south-westerly swell direction is okay, but that’s about the only positive.
The rest of the week, all the way through to the end of August, is a write-off. The wind is either onshore, cross-onshore, or just too strong, and the swell stays tiny. Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 26th sees clean offshore winds, but the swell is laughable at 0.7ft to 2ft. You’d be paddling for nothing.
We start to see a bit more energy around the 27th and 28th, with the swell bumping up to 3ft and 4ft, but the wind turns messy. Cross-onshore and choppy conditions ruin any chance of a decent wave. The energy is moderate (121 to 143), but it’s all wind swell with a short 8-second period and poor direction.
Then comes Saturday the 29th of August. This is the only real stand-out in the whole forecast, but it comes with a massive caveat. The swell pumps up to 8ft from the west with a moderate 8-second period, and the combined energy jumps to a strong 787. This is big, powerful, and messy. It’s onshore, windy, and honestly, for Duckpool, this is going to be a washing machine. This is expert-only territory. The wind is howling at 22 mph straight onshore, making it a brutal, stormy mess. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
After that, we drop back down. The 30th and 31st see some lingering swell (4ft to 7ft), but the wind is still onshore or cross-onshore, killing the quality. The first week of September is a slow fade back to nothing. Small, weak, and choppy. A few days in the second week, like the 6th of September, show a 6ft west swell with a clean cross-off breeze, but the period is short (6 seconds) and the energy is moderate (270). It’s worth a look if you’re desperate, but it’s not the kind of day you’d mark on the calendar.
Honestly, mate, the whole 16-day window is a struggle. There’s a lot of poor surf and strong wind. It’s one of those stretches where you’re better off checking the forecast again in a few days.
Rusty.
