The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Duckpool Bay.
Honestly, mate, it’s a bleak picture. We’ve got a 16-day window ahead of us, and the first bit is a write-off. From now right up until the end of the first week, there’s nothing doing. The swell is tiny or non-existent, and when it does try to show, the wind is all over the shop. It’s not until Sunday, August 30th that we finally see a pulse of energy, but even then it’s a total mess.
That Sunday morning (August 30th) brings a bit of hope, but only just. The swell bumps up to 6 ft from the WSW (combined energy of all swells directed here 634), but the period is a short 8 seconds. That’s windswell, not groundswell, so it’s going to be lumpy. The wind is out of the S at 9 mph, which is a cross-shore, so it’s not completely blown out, but the report says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” It’s not going to be pretty, but it’s the first real sign of life.
Monday, August 31st morning sees the swell a touch bigger at 7 ft from the W, still with that short 8-second period. The energy is strong (1027), but the wind is a gentle cross-onshore from the SW. That’s a big lump of water, but it’s going to be choppy and sloppy. At 7 ft and messy, this is not for beginners. It’s more of a big-board grunt or, to be honest, it looks like it’d be more fun on a kite than a paddle.
Wednesday, September 3rd morning starts off with a rare moment of beauty – glassy conditions, no wind at all, but the swell is a pathetic 1 ft. It’s pretty to look at, but you won’t be riding anything. Then that afternoon, the swell jumps to 7 ft from the NNW, but the period is 7 seconds and the wind is a cross-onshore from the NW. That’s going to be a messy, short-period wall of white water, strictly for experts who don't mind getting thrashed.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is the brief window around the 30th and 31st of August. But with the wind never truly cooperating, the short period, and the constant onshore or cross-onshore flow, it’s a tough sell. For the rest of the run, it’s flat, blown out, or just plain ugly.
There’s nothing here that I’d genuinely recommend paddling out for, unless you’re desperate. It’s one of those long, frustrating runs for the area.
