The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Fall Bay Reef over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it: this is a grim stretch. The forecast is showing a solid 16-day period with absolutely no decent surf options. Every single session is tagged as "poor surf conditions," and there's not a single recommendation to be found. We're looking at a long, blank run here, which for this spot isn't entirely abnormal when the stars don't align.
The first real sniff of any size comes around Thursday the 27th of August, but it's a mess. Onshore winds and a rising swell just mean choppy, blown-out conditions. Friday the 28th of August morning sees the swell bump up to 5 ft from the SW, with a period of 9 seconds, and combined wave energy hitting 405 (moderate). But the wind is cross-onshore, so it's going to be lumpy.
Saturday the 29th of August offers the biggest swell of the whole run, with a 6 ft to 7 ft WSW groundswell. The period is short at 7 seconds, which means it'll be a bit of a close-out. The wind is cross-off on the morning, cleaning it up, but with 25 mph winds, it's going to be a battle. The combined energy (342 to 474) is solid, but this is really only for the experts. The wind and size will make it a messy, challenging paddle. For a break that's "inconsistent" and "fairly exposed," this is a day where you might be better off watching or, if you're into it, the setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The rest of the first week and into September is a washout of tiny, onshore, or cross-shore junk. Swell sizes hover around 0.3 ft to 3 ft with weak energy. The wind stays on it, and the period is often short and weak. The water temperature is a notable 69°F, which is a whopping 8°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That's very unusual, but it won't do you any good with no waves.
If you're determined, the 4th of September Friday afternoon sees a 3 ft W swell with a clean cross-off breeze and a 173 (moderate) energy reading. It's a tiny window of clean conditions, but the swell is still small. The very end of the run on the 5th and 6th of September is just more strong wind and messy chop.
So, in short, leave the boards in the shed. There's not a single standout day here. The swell either comes with terrible wind or is too small to matter. It's a tough call, but the forecasts can change, and a blank run like this doesn't tend to last forever. For now, though, it's a no-go.
Rusty.
