The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a slow burn this stretch. The next week is looking pretty grim, with weak, junky swell and not a lot of push. We’ve got a run of days with barely anything to get excited about. The good news? It’s not going to last forever. There’s a pulse of proper energy on the horizon, but you’re going to need some patience to get to it.
Right now, we’re looking at a lot of small, short-period slop. The first week is mostly a write-off, with wave heights struggling to get above 3 feet and periods often under 7 seconds. The wind is a constant issue too, often cross or onshore, making things messy. That Thursday morning (August 27th) has a moment of glass, but the swell is only about 3 feet and the energy is weak (130), so it’s more of a hope than a plan. Don’t get too keen on that.
We roll into the next week, and things start to stir. The water temp is sitting at a very warm 69°, which is well above the long-term average for the time of year—you won’t need a thick suit, that’s for sure.
The first real standout will be that Thursday (September 3rd) night into Friday (September 4th). The swell is still building, but the winds go offshore and clean. The energy on Friday is strong (421), and the swell is a solid 7 feet out of the WSW.
But for my money, the pick of the week is that Friday afternoon (September 4th) and Saturday morning (September 5th). The swell eases slightly to a still-chunky 6 feet to 5 feet from the WSW, but the winds stay offshore or cross-offshore, so the surface is going to be clean and rippable. The combined energy is strong (382 and 385 respectively), and this is a reef, so it handles this kind of lumpy, long-period (8 seconds) energy well. This is where you want to be. It’s going to be a proper session.
The dates to circle are the 4th and 5th of September. Before that, it’s a grind. There’s some bigger swell slated for the 2nd, but the onshore winds will blow that out. We’ll see if the forecasts hold, but right now the standouts are clear.
Rusty.
