The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, for a good stretch, it’s looking pretty bleak. There’s nothing worth paddling out for until the very end of the month at Fall Bay Reef. This spot is a reef setup, intermediate level, and it’s inconsistent, so it doesn’t break often. When it does, it’s fairly exposed to the swell, and the optimum direction is from the SW. The water right now is sitting at 68°F, which is 8°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, you’ll feel it.
We are looking at a long, quiet run with no real surf from the 15th of July right through until the 29th of July. Through that whole period, the swell is tiny, mostly 0.3ft to 1ft, with weak combined energy (values between 2 and 55). The wind is often offshore or clean, but with no wave energy, it’s just a flat, glassy lake.
Things finally start to show a pulse on Wednesday the 30th of July. By Thursday morning on the 30th, the swell picks up to 4ft from the W, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy climbs to a modest 116. Still, it’s a short-period windswell, and the wind is a gentle cross-onshore, making it a bit choppy. By Thursday afternoon, the swell holds at 4ft from the WSW, with a similar short period, and the energy is 119. The wind turns to a gentle cross-shore, which will clean it up a little, but it’s still a messy, weak swell.
So, the only real standout, and I’m using that term loosely, is Thursday the 30th of July. That’s the only time we get any real wave height. The swell direction (WSW) is close to the optimum SW for Fall Bay Reef. The wind is light, but the period is very short at 6 seconds, so the waves will be weak and crumbly. It’s not going to be great, but it’s the only surf on the table.
Everything else in the 16 days is a write-off for paddle surfing. The swell is too inconsistent and small to get excited about.
Stay tuned, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
