Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – if you’re looking to paddle out at Fall Bay Reef over the next 16 days, you’re going to be staring at a whole lot of flat, weak nothing. There are no good surf options in this entire window. Every single forecasted period comes back as poor surf conditions, and the guidance just confirms it: this is an inconsistent reef that’s rarely firing, and this run is a perfect example of why.
The entire stretch from Saturday the 4th of July right through to Sunday the 19th of July offers absolutely nothing worth getting wet for. That’s a full 16-day gap with no recommendations. Swell heights barely nudge past 2 ft at their best, and the combined energy never hits triple digits – the highest reading is a pathetic 149 (weak energy) early on the 4th.
The water is sitting at 66°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual. But you won’t be enjoying that warmth on a decent wave.
Let’s run through it quickly. Saturday the 4th was the “biggest” day with 3 ft from the west, but with a short, weak period of 6 seconds and moderate cross-shore chop, it was junk. After that, it just gets smaller and flatter. A few mornings go glassy – like Saturday the 11th and Wednesday the 15th – but the swell is literally 1.0 ft to 1 ft. You’d be floating for 20 minutes between ankle-biters.
Even the very long period 19-second groundswell that pops up on Monday the 13th is only 0.3 ft – a ghost swell. That sort of period at a reef could be unreal if there was any size, but there isn’t a drop of it. For a beach or beach-and-reef setup in these conditions, I’d say this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing – there’s a bit of wind at times – but honestly, even the wind is mostly cross or onshore and not strong enough to get excited about.
It’s a blank run, but for an inconsistent, rarely-breaking spot like Fall Bay Reef, this is more normal than a surprise. Forecasts can change, but right now, save the wax.
Rusty.
