Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a long, hard look at what's on offer for Fall Bay Reef over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you—it’s a tough stretch, but we’ll pick out the few moments that could be worth a look.
Right now, and for the first ten days, the outlook is pretty grim. From Friday 3 July right through to Saturday 11 July, the surf is small, messy, and mostly blown out. There’s a brief moment on Sunday morning 5 July where it’s clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is only 2ft from the W with a short period of 6 seconds, so it's really weak—combined energy of just 60. It’s not worth paddling out for, honestly. The rest of that first week is a write-off: choppy, cross-shore winds, and tiny swell. On Monday 13 July morning though, things finally change.
On Monday morning 13 July, we get a small window of glassy conditions with a 2ft swell from the W at a period of 11 seconds. The combined energy comes in at 133, which is moderate. It’s not big, but the wave quality could be alright for an intermediate. That’s the best of the bunch for this forecast. The swell direction is WSW, which matches the optimum SW direction for this reef. Expect very clean, glassy conditions—this is your standout. Crowds could be an issue though, as this spot can get busy.
The afternoon of Monday 13 July sees the swell bump up to 3ft from the WSW with a 12-second period and combined energy of 273, but the wind swings cross-shore and it gets a bit messy again.
From Tuesday 14 July onwards, the swell stays small and the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, keeping conditions ordinary. There’s a bump on Thursday morning 16 July with 3ft from the W and a 9-second period, but it’s blown out with a cross-onshore wind and choppy water (combined energy 184). Not great.
Remember, this spot is an inconsistent reef break, so a run of poor days is normal here.
So, to sum it up: the one clear standout is Monday morning 13 July. If you’re an intermediate and you want a clean, glassy session on a small but decent swell, that’s your moment. Everything else is either too weak, too messy, or both.
Keep your expectations in check and stay ready for that Monday morning glass-off.
Rusty.
