The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening at Fall Bay Reef.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this stretch is looking pretty bleak. For the next week, we’re basically staring at a flat spell. The waves are tiny, barely a ripple, with just 0.3ft to 0.7ft of weak, short-period slop. There’s next to no energy in the water (combined energy values mostly in the single digits or low teens), and the wind, while occasionally glassy or clean, just can’t do a thing with the swell. The surf is simply not surfable. We’re talking about a solid week of nothing, from Sunday the 19th right through the weekend.
Then, things get a little more interesting. Around Monday the 27th, we start to see a real pulse. The swell bumps up to 2ft to 2ft, and by Tuesday the 28th, we’ve got a 5ft swell from the west with a period of 7 seconds. Now, the combined energy jumps to 204 (moderate wave energy), which is a real sign of life. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WNW at 25 km/h, so the conditions will be tidy. However, 5ft is right on the edge of being too much for beginners, and the 7-second period is short, so it won’t be the most powerful wave. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a treat.
We get a few more days of similar, building energy. Wednesday the 29th sees 3ft swell, but the energy drops back to 53. Thursday the 30th is a standout for the offshore winds – a solid 20 km/h from the N keeping it clean, but it drops to 1ft. The best bet in this whole window is probably Tuesday the 28th. That 5ft swell from the west with the clean cross-offshore wind is the best combination of size and wind we’re going to see. Fall Bay Reef is an inconsistent spot, so this window is a bit of a gamble, but that Tuesday morning session is your best shot. If you’re a beginner, this is a bit too much, but for the intermediates, it’s the one to target.
The tail end of the forecast, into the first week of August, has some cleaner, smaller swells (2ft to 3ft) with decent offshore winds, but the energy is low. It’s not a bust, but nothing to get the heart racing.
Rusty.
