Alright, let’s break it down. Right now, the surf is flat, and it’s gonna stay that way for a solid stretch. We’re looking at a long run of tiny waves and poor conditions, so don’t rush to wax up just yet.
For the next couple of weeks, Fall Bay Reef is the only spot in the picture. It’s an inconsistent reef break that needs a specific SW swell to fire, and for the first week and a half, it’s barely showing a pulse. You’ll see a few days of 1ft to 2ft waves from the W and WSW, but combined energy is weak, reading between 12 and 56 (weak energy). Periods are short, mostly 5 to 9 seconds, so no push or shape to speak of. The water temperature on Sunday afternoon July 5th is sitting at 67°, which is a massive 8° warmer than normal—very unusual for this time of year.
There’s a glimmer of cleaner conditions around Wednesday July 8th into the weekend, with some glassy mornings and light offshore breezes, but the swell is so small it’s barely rideable. By Sunday July 12th, things get a bit weird: a 2ft east windswell with only 4 seconds of period pops up, but it’s still poor quality.
The real shift doesn’t come until the weekend of July 18th and 19th. On Saturday July 18th afternoon, we see 4ft from the WSW, with moderate wave energy (115). Then Sunday July 19th morning jumps to 4ft and a combined energy of 258 (moderate to strong), but the period is still short at 7 seconds, so the waves will be choppy and weak. The wind is cross or light cross, so it won’t be totally clean. This swell is too small for experts but might be just okay for intermediate surfers looking for something—though the quality is still listed as poor.
Monday July 20th morning pushes up to 5ft from the W, with energy hitting 255, but the wind turns onshore and the period stays short at 7 seconds. It’s messy and not worth getting excited about.
Standout? Honestly, there isn’t one. If I had to pick the least terrible window, it would be Saturday July 18th afternoon or Sunday July 19th morning—at least the swell height is near 4-5ft and the wind is light. But “best on offer” here is a low bar. If you’re a kite surfer, the bumpy conditions from July 18th to 20th might look more interesting than anything paddle surfing.
This is a classic quiet run for Fall Bay Reef. It doesn’t stay dead forever, but right now, it’s a waiting game.
