The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here.
Alright, let’s be straight with you – this Fall Bay Reef outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions, and honestly, there's not a single session I’d be rushing out the door for. The water temperature is sitting at a very unusual 68°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing that’s pumping.
The first week is a complete write-off. From Saturday the 18th right through to Tuesday the 29th of July, the surf is tiny and the winds are all over the shop. You’ll see days with glassy conditions on the 18th morning and 20th morning, but with swells of just 0.3ft to 1.0ft, there’s simply nothing to ride. The combined wave energy is in the single digits and low teens – that’s weak energy, no question.
We get a bit of a bump on Thursday the 30th of July with a 5ft swell from the west, but with onshore winds and poor conditions, it’s not going to offer anything decent. The energy jumps up to 246, which is moderate, but that’s useless with the wind ruining it. The swell period is short, only 7 seconds, so it won't have any punch either.
The only spot that barely scrapes into the "surfable" category is Wednesday the 29th of July in the morning. We’ve got a 4ft west swell, a period of 6 seconds, and a clean cross-offshore wind. The energy is a moderate 117. But the conditions are described as "very ordinary", and this is an inconsistent reef break that can get crowded often. It’s a low bar, but if you were absolutely desperate, that’s your best look. Honestly, this setup with the cross-shore winds and lumpy conditions on the bigger days looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
After that, the first few days of August are just as flat and clean, but tiny. It’s a blank run of almost two weeks with nothing worth paddling out for, which is unfortunately pretty normal for this area when the conditions line up like this.
Rusty.
