The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the 16-day window for us. Let's get into it.
Straight up, this is a tough one to call. The entire 16-day forecast is a ghost town for surf – every single entry is marked as poor surf conditions. We’re looking at a streak of quiet days that stretches from the start of the outlook all the way through to the end of July, with only a whisper of swell appearing in the final week.
The only spot we’ve got to talk about is Fall Bay Reef. It's an inconsistent reef break, only rated for intermediate surfers, and it can get crowded. The water temperature is sitting at 68°F with a massive anomaly of 8°F warmer than usual, which is very unusual for this time of year. That’s a real talking point down at the beach.
For the first nine days, from Thursday the 16th right through to the morning of Friday the 24th, the swell is tiny – mostly 0.3ft to 1.0ft. The combined wave energy is in the single digits (2 to 15), which is weak. It’s basically a flat spell. The winds are often clean, sometimes glassy, but there’s just no swell to work with.
We finally see a bit of life on Saturday the 25th of July afternoon. The swell picks up to 2ft from the west, with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 30. That’s still weak. The wind is cross-off, keeping it clean. This little pulse continues into Sunday the 26th, with the swell holding at 3ft from the west, period still 6 seconds, and energy at 54. Morning looks clean, but the afternoon gets a fresh cross-shore wind that will chop it up.
The best chance in this entire outlook lands on Wednesday the 30th of July. The morning brings a 4ft west-southwest swell, with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of 195 (moderate). The wind is a clean cross-off. That’s the biggest swell of the window, and under that offshore breeze, the waves will be shaped up. It’s still not huge, but for a reef that’s been starved, it’s the standout. The afternoon gets lumpy as the wind swings cross-shore. The next day, it drops back down to 3ft from the west-southwest.
So, to be honest, there’s no real classic day here. The best you’ll find is that Wednesday the 30th morning, with clean 4ft surf at Fall Bay Reef. It’s a poor run for the area, but it tends not to stay this quiet forever. Keep an eye on the forecasts.
Rusty.
