The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – this outlook for the next 16 days is a tough one. The swell and wind just aren't lining up for any decent sessions at Fall Bay Reef. In fact, the whole period is a write-off for surf, so don't bother waxing up just yet.
It's a grim run from August 17th right through to the end of the month. The swell is tiny, often under 2 ft, with weak, short-period windswell that's got no push. The combined energy readings are mostly in the double digits or low triple digits, with values like 37 (weak energy), 27 (weak energy), and 135 (moderate energy) on the few occasions it picks up a bit. The wind and chop are a mess too. On August 17th, Monday morning, you've got a weak 2 ft W swell at a pathetic 6 seconds, with cross-off wind, but it's still "poor surf conditions." The water temperature is 69°, which is a whopping 8° warmer than normal – that's very unusual for this time of year.
The only flicker of hope comes right at the very end of the outlook. On August 30th, Sunday morning, things look a little more promising. There's a 6 ft SW swell with a 7-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 513 (strong wave energy). The wind is cross-off from the WNW at 9 mph, so it should be clean. That's rated as "expect good surf conditions," but it's a one-off, and then the wind goes cross-on in the afternoon. Then on August 31st, Monday morning, there's a 6 ft W swell at 10 seconds, with a massive combined energy of 1187 (very strong wave energy), but the strong cross wind and risk of thunderstorms spoil it.
Honestly, for a reef break that's already inconsistent, this is a long stretch of nothing. It's the kind of run where you'd be better off watching the forecast and hoping it changes. Till then, we wait.
