The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window for Three Peaks is a real struggle. There’s barely a moment where it all lines up, and most of the time, the conditions are just plain ugly.
Let’s kick off with the only real glimmer, and it’s on Saturday the 22nd of August. The morning session is the pick of the bunch. We’ve got clean, clear skies and a light offshore breeze from the NE at 3 mph. The swell is small, coming in at 1 ft from the WSW with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is weak (62). It’s not going to blow you away, but it’s surfable and clean. The water temperature is a very unusual 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a real treat. It’s a beginner-friendly break, and it’s fairly consistent, but crowds are possible. That Saturday morning is your best shot.
From there, it’s a long dry spell. Saturday afternoon goes to junk, and then Sunday the 23rd through to Monday the 1st of September is just a write-off. We’re talking about over a week of poor surf. The swell does pick up – on Sunday the 30th of August we see 5 ft swell from the WSW, and by Monday the 31st it’s up to 6 ft with moderate wave energy (418), but it’s all onshore wind. The wind is straight from the SW or onshore, and the period is short and choppy. The surf quality is poor, and frankly, it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The energy is there, but the wind will ruin it.
The only other small window is on Thursday the 3rd of September in the morning. We get a glassy, calm session with 1.0 ft of WSW swell and a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is just 16 – very weak. It’s clean, but barely rideable. The rest of the forecast is more of the same: cross-on winds, lumpy conditions, and flat spells.
So, for the whole 16 days, the standout is the Saturday 22nd of August morning. It’s not epic, but it’s the only thing close to good. The rest is a waiting game. Hang in there, and check back for the next update.
Rusty.
