Table - best surf conditions forecast for Three Peaks over the next 16 days.
Alright, let’s get straight into it. I’ve been over the charts and there’s not a lot to smile about for the next couple of weeks at Three Peaks. The early part of the outlook is a write-off – we’re talking days of tiny, weak, and messy conditions that aren’t worth getting out of bed for. The first batch of proper surf doesn’t show up until around July 21st, but even then, the quality is rough.
From Saturday the 11th right through to Monday the 20th, the swell is tiny – mostly 0.3 ft to 1 ft – and the energy is pitiful, all between 13 and 34 (combined swell energy). Winds are cross-off or glassy at times, which is clean, but with zero push, there’s nothing to ride. The only hint of size comes on Tuesday the 21st, when a 4 ft swell rolls in from the WSW, period only 6 seconds – that’s short-period wind chop, not proper groundswell. Energy bumps to 142 (moderate), but the onshore wind is howling at 35 km/h, making it a right-off. Wednesday 22nd is similar: 4 ft to 4 ft, cross-onshore wind, energy in the 150s, but it’s choppy and messy. This stretch is far better suited to kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The wind eases for a moment on Friday 24th morning, with a moderate offshore breeze from the NE, and the swell drops to 3 ft – surfable, but only just. It’s a 6-second period, so the waves are weak and lumpy. That afternoon sees a bit more size at 5 ft from the SW (energy 198), but it’s cross-off wind and still short-period chop.
Now, the one that stands out – and I mean *really* stands out – is Saturday the 25th morning. We’ve got a solid 8 ft swell from the west, period 8 seconds, and the combined energy is massive at 1006 (strong). But there’s a catch. The wind is cross-onshore from the west at 20 km/h, so it’s going to be choppy and messy at this exposed beach break. That size is expert-only territory – too big for beginners and even intermediates will be out of their depth. If you’re savvy and can handle the lumps, it might be a wild session, but don’t expect any kind of clean, lined-up waves. The crowds? Could be around, but with conditions like that, it’ll only be the hardcore.
After that, Sunday 26th drops back to 4 ft with heavy rain and a strong onshore wind – no good.
As for the water, right now it’s 67°F, which is 8° warmer than usual for here – that’s way above normal, almost like a freak warm spell. No need for a thick suit, that’s for sure.
Honestly, for most of this 16-day run, you’re better off staying ashore or finding something else to do. The only real chance of something memorable is that big, messy Saturday 25th morning – but only if you’ve got the nerve and a board you don’t mind taking a beating.
Rusty.
