The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for Three Peaks over these next couple of weeks. I’ll level with you – this stretch is mostly a dud. A long, flat spell that runs for the better part of the first week, with hardly a wave worth paddling for. The first day that’s even worth mentioning isn’t until the 22nd.

On Thursday the 20th of August, we’ve got rain showers and a moderate breeze blowing cross-shore. Swell is 5ft from the west, but it’s short period at 7 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 214. The water is a very unusual 69°F – that’s more than 5° warmer than normal for this time of year. But the surf is poor and choppy. Not your day.

Friday the 21st cleans right up with clear skies and a light cross-offshore breeze, but the swell drops to 2ft and the energy is a weak 73. Clean, but tiny.

The only time I’d even think about paddling out in that first week is Saturday morning the 22nd of August. We’ve got a tiny 1ft swell from the WSW, but the period stretches to 10 seconds, so it’s got a bit of shape. The wind is light and cross-offshore, and the combined energy is a weak 62. The call is “surfable but very ordinary.” It’s a beginner wave at best.

From Sunday the 23rd right through to Tuesday the 2nd of September, it’s mostly flat. Swell barely hits 2ft most days, with energy values in the teens and twenties. Winds are all over the place, onshore or cross. There’s nothing doing.

Saturday the 29th of August is a big pulse but not for the faint-hearted. Swell jumps to 8ft from the WSW with an 8-second period, and the combined energy is a very strong 636. That’s a lot of power, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore breeze, making it lumpy and messy. This one is for experts only – far too big for beginners. With that much wind and lumpy waves, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than surfing.

Thursday the 3rd of September brings another pulse – 6ft to 7ft from the WSW, with energy up to 551, but the wind is howling onshore at 25 to 31 mph. Total mess.

The best of the whole outlook, and I’m not kidding when I say it’s the only one, is Friday the 4th of September in the morning. Swell is 4ft from the WSW with an 8-second period, combined energy at a moderate 184, and the wind is light and cross-offshore from the NNW. That’s clean and surfable for an intermediate. The afternoon turns choppy again.

Bottom line: a whole lotta flat with two small windows. If you’re keen, the morning of the 22nd of August or the morning of the 4th of September are your best shots. Otherwise, keep the board dry.
