The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I've been through the charts and it's a real quiet stretch coming up for the next couple of weeks. We've got a long run of tiny, weak surf, so don't get your hopes up just yet.
Let's start with the first bit worth talking about. On Saturday the 18th of July, we're looking at Three Peaks. The swell is a tiny 0.7 ft out of the west, with a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is basically nothing – only a 6 on the combined scale. Saturday morning does have glassy conditions with that slight southeast air, so it'll look clean, but there's just no power in the water. The water temp is a really unusual 68°, which is over 4 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year. That's a standout in itself.
Over the next week, from the 19th through to the 24th of July, it's pretty much the same story – wave heights hovering around 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft with very weak energy readings mostly well under 20. There are some clean windows, especially on Monday the 20th morning with flat glass, but you'd be hard-pressed to get a ride.
Now, the first hint of something bigger shows up on Saturday the 25th of July. Three Peaks sees a jump to 5 ft swell, also from the west, but the period has dropped to just 7 seconds – that's weak, short-period windswell. The combined energy jumps to 211 for the morning and 379 in the afternoon. That's moderate-to-strong energy but the wind is cross or cross-onshore at 12 to 16 mph, so it'll be choppy and bumpy. This is more of a messy, blown-out day for the beach. Honestly, with that chop, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Sunday the 26th drops back down to 2 ft, then Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th see swell up to 3 ft and 4 ft, but it's all coming from the west-southwest with short periods and cross-onshore winds. The energy peaks on Tuesday morning at 118 – moderate – but the wind is still onshore, so it won't be clean. It's a grind, not a standout.
From Wednesday the 29th of July onward, the swell fades back to flat again. We're looking at 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft for the rest of the run through to Sunday the 2nd of August. There are a few clean mornings with offshore or glassy conditions on the 30th and 31st, but with such tiny swell it's barely surfable.
So, what's the best of it? Honestly, the only real pulse is Saturday the 25th of July. It's not perfect, but if you're desperate for some push, that 5 ft west swell with moderate energy is the most size you'll see. The wind is messy, so it's not going to be the cleanest session, but it's the only real window in the entire two weeks. The rest of the time, you're looking at a flat spell. The good news is this area is fairly consistent, so it won't stay this way forever. Forecasts can change, but for now, keep your expectations low.
Stay patient, catch you out there.
