The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for Three Peaks over the next couple of weeks.
Alright, mate, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – this is a grim stretch for Three Peaks. We're looking at a solid run of tiny, weak surf with hardly any energy in the water. The first week and a half is basically a write-off, with nothing but ankle-snappers on offer. The combined swell energy is struggling to even hit three digits, mostly sitting in the teens and twenties – that's weak, flat energy. You’d be better off taking up golf for a bit.
The first real sign of life doesn't show up until Saturday the 25th, and even then it's a slow build. The morning of the 25th is still tiny at 1 ft from the west, but by the afternoon we see a pulse of 2 ft from the west-southwest, with the energy finally climbing to 64. It's still small, and the wind is a light cross-onshore, so it won't be pretty, but it's something.
The only window that looks even remotely interesting kicks off around Monday the 27th. The swell is bumping up to 6 ft from the west-southwest, and the combined energy is a solid 330. That's moderate energy, finally. The wind is a cross-onshore on Monday morning, but by Monday afternoon it swings to a light cross-shore, which is a big improvement. The period is a short 7 seconds though, so it's windswell, not a proper groundswell. It's going to be a bit lumpy and lack that punch you'd want, but it's the biggest swell we've seen. The break is known for being beginner-friendly, but 6 ft is getting a bit punchy for the groms, so keep that in mind.
After that, it drops back down. Tuesday the 28th is still 5 ft but with a strong onshore wind from the south, making it messy. There's a late pulse on Tuesday afternoon with a 5 ft swell and a period of 10 seconds, but the wind is onshore at 19 mph, so it's going to be a washing machine. The combined energy there hits 445 (strong energy), but the conditions will be absolute rubbish for paddle surfing. Honestly, if you're a kiteboarder, the 28th afternoon might look tempting, but for a surfboard, it's a no-go.
So, the best on offer? It's pretty slim pickings. I'd say the standout is the afternoon of Monday the 27th. The swell is 6 ft from the west-southwest, and the wind is light and cross-shore, so it'll be the cleanest of the bigger days. It's not going to be perfect, but it's the only time in the whole 16 days where the size and the wind line up for a semi-decent surf. The water temperature is a notable 69°F for the first session, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the wetsuit at home.
The rest of the second week, after the 28th, it just fades back into tiny, wind-affected dribble. Don't get your hopes up.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecast. Things can change, but right now, mark the 27th in your calendar.
Rusty.
