The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a flat spell to kick things off, I gotta be honest. For the first few days through to the weekend, there’s hardly any swell to speak of, and what little there is gets chopped up by onshore or cross-shore winds. You’re looking at a gap of several days where it’s just not worth paddling out unless you’re a masochist.
Things finally start to look a little more promising around Thursday the 20th of August. That morning at Three Peaks, we’ve got a pulse of swell coming in at 4.9 ft from the W, with a period of 7 seconds and the combined swell energy sitting at 246 – that’s moderate energy. The wind is light from the NW, so it’s a cross-shore setup with a slight cross-chop. It’s still fairly average, but it’s the first real chance of a wave in the whole window. This spot is exposed to the W and the optimum swell is also from the W, so it’s pointing right at it. Crowds are listed as *sometimes* busy, so you might have some company. The water temp is about average for the time of year.
That same afternoon, it gets a bit messier with a moderate cross-shore breeze, and the energy jumps up to 490 (moderate) but the quality drops off. Friday morning the 21st of August is the real standout for the entire forecast period. The swell drops right back to 2.0 ft from the WSW, period 8 seconds, but the big news is the wind: NE at 10 km/h, light and *offshore*. That’s clean surf, glassy conditions. The energy is weak at 71, but for a beginner-friendly spot like Three Peaks, those small, clean waves will be perfect. It’s rated 3/5 difficulty and is ‘fairly consistent’.
After that, we go into another dry spell. From Saturday the 22nd of August right through to around Monday the 24th, swell drops to tiny 0.7 ft to 1.0 ft – not worth even looking at. A bit of a pulse returns on Tuesday the 25th with 4.3 ft and longer period at 9 seconds, but the cross-onshore wind ruins it – 267 energy, moderate, but messy.
Then we’ve got a bigger event building for the very end of the outlook. Around Saturday the 29th of August, the swell size starts to climb. By Monday the 31st of August morning, we’re looking at 5.9 ft from the SW with a period of 6 seconds, energy of 229 (moderate), but it’s cross-on and fairly choppy. That afternoon jumps to 7.9 ft from the SSW, 7 seconds, with a very strong wave energy reading of 731 – that’s getting into strong territory. But the wind is onshore, so it won't be clean. That size is getting too big for beginners.
Into the first of September, Tuesday the 1st, we’ve got 7.9 ft from the WSW with a long period of 10 seconds and energy of 1021 – that’s strong to very strong wave energy. That’s a proper groundswell. The wind is directly onshore, so it’s blown out. Wednesday the 2nd of September sees the swell drop a bit to 6.6 ft with a period of 9 seconds and energy of 630 (moderate-strong). The wind shifts NW, making it cross-shore with a slight cross-chop, which is a bit better, but still not perfect.
Honestly, for the whole 16-day window, the Friday morning 21st of August is your best bet by a long shot. The combination of offshore wind, small clean lines, and a spot made for beginners makes it the standout. Every other session is either flat, messy, or blown out. Keep your eyes peeled, but don't expect much.
