The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty ordinary for Three Peaks. There’s no real standout session, and for the most part, you’re better off finding something else to do. The water’s a balmy 68°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t be cold if you get desperate.
We start off with nothing. Sunday the 23rd of August has tiny 0.3ft to 1.0ft swell with a weak 15 combined energy – just not worth paddling out for. That flat spell drags on right through the week. Monday and Tuesday are still tiny, with Easterly winds keeping things clean but offering no real push. Wednesday the 26th sees a brief spike to 1ft with glassy conditions in the afternoon, but it’s still small and the combined swell energy is only 46 (weak). It’s not until the morning of Thursday the 27th that we get a bit of a pulse – 5ft from the SW with cross-onshore wind, combined energy up to 259 (moderate). Still poor conditions though, choppy and messy. Friday morning the 28th is surfable – 2ft SW swell, clean with cross-offshore wind, combined energy 83 (weak) – but it’s very ordinary.
Then things get a bit of size, but the wind ruins it. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August see building swell – 5ft to 7ft from the WSW – but it’s onshore and howling with rain, combined energy hitting 485 (strong). Monday the 31st drops back to 3ft but remains choppy. From there, it’s back to tiny surf until we hit Friday the 4th of September. That morning we’ve got an 8ft WSW swell with a period of 9 seconds, combined energy of 2246 (very strong wave energy). There’s some cross-onshore wind and the conditions are just fair – marginal at best. It’s too big for beginners and only really for experienced surfers who don’t mind some chop. Saturday the 5th holds 6ft to 7ft but it’s onshore rain again. Sunday the 6th, more of the same. Finally, Monday the 7th of September throws up a 10ft to 13ft WSW swell with very strong energy (up to 2676), but a near-gale cross-onshore wind has it blown out. Only for the hardcore or kites.
So what’s the pick? Honestly, nothing shouts “get in the water”. If I had to point you somewhere, the morning of Friday the 4th of September has the most size and energy, but that cross-onshore breeze will make it messy. Keep an eye on it – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
