The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Gotta be straight with you, looking at the charts for Three Peaks – it’s a quiet stretch ahead, that’s for sure. For the next week and a half, we’re looking at tiny surf with barely any energy to speak of. Swell heights mostly hovering around 0.3 ft to 1 ft and combined wave energy barely cracking 30 (mostly under 20), so it’s basically a lake out there. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild. The wind does look good though – plenty of glassy and clean mornings with light breezes, but there’s just no swell to work with. You’d be better off on a longboard or a SUP.
Things start getting interesting Sunday the 26th of July morning, that’s when some proper swell finally rolls in. We see the swell pick up a bit, but winds are cross-onshore from the WNW at around 12 mph and making things choppy. Still, that combined energy is climbing into the low 80s, so there’s a pulse.
But the real standout lands on Monday the 27th of July. The swell jumps to a solid 6 ft to 6 ft out of the WSW, with the combined energy kicking into the 300s. That’s a moderate wave energy that’ll have some push. The downside? Wind is onshore from the SW at 12-15 mph, and the period is a short, choppy 7 seconds, so it won’t be pretty. This is definitely expert-only territory – the size is over 5 ft and with the onshore wind, it’ll be a battle. For a beginner, this is way too much. Honestly, with that short-period, onshore wind combo, this wave might actually be more fun for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Tuesday the 28th of July keeps the size, but with strong onshore winds from the SSW (22 mph) and some light rain, the quality is gonna be rough. Combined energy stays above 200. Wednesday the 29th of July brings the biggest swell of the outlook – 7 ft out of the WSW with a combined energy of 459. That’s moderate-to-strong energy, but with stiff onshore winds at 16 mph, only experts should even think about it. Again, a kite surfer’s setup more than a pure paddle session.
So, bottom line: the next 12 days are flat and tiny – a real lull. Then on the 27th, we get a power surge, but it’s rough and messy. If you’re an experienced charlie and don't mind battling onshore slop, that Monday (27th) or Wednesday (29th) mornings are your only shot at something rideable. Keep an eye on it – forecasts can shift, but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
