The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Three Peaks over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you – the first week and a half or so is looking pretty grim. We're staring down a long, flat spell. From Wednesday the 15th through Monday the 27th of July, it's basically a write-off. The swell is tiny, barely a ripple, and the energy is weak as dishwater. You're looking at a lot of days with combined energy readings in the teens or single digits – that's just not enough to get a wave. There's a day here and there with a bit of glassy wind, like Saturday the 18th morning or Thursday the 23rd morning, but even then, the swell is practically non-existent. Don't bother paddling out for that.
The water temp at Three Peaks is sitting at 68°F, which is a massive 8° warmer than normal for this time of year. It feels like a bath out there, but there's no surf to enjoy it.
Now, the good news – and it's a bit of a long shot – is that things finally start to change right at the very end of the month. The first real sign of life we see is on Tuesday the 28th of July, but it's still messy with a cross-onshore wind and a short, choppy period. The real standout is shaping up for Wednesday morning, the 29th of July.
This is the one to circle on the calendar. We've got a clean 6ft of swell rolling in from the west-southwest. The combined energy jumps up to 389 (moderate) – that's more like it! But the real kicker is the wind: it's glassy, dead calm. The swell period is 8 seconds, so it's a bit of a windswell, but with zero wind on the surface, those waves are going to be as clean as a whistle. That's a full morning of fun, clean waves. The afternoon sees the wind shift onshore, making it choppy, so get on it early.
After that, we get a bit of a drop-off on Thursday the 30th with a 3ft swell and a cross wind, but it's still a better option than anything we saw in the first ten days.
So, to sum it up: the first 12 days are a total bust. Don't even think about it. The only real opportunity is that Wednesday morning, July 29th. It's a long way off, so keep an eye on it, but if that forecast holds, it'll be the best session of the month.
Rusty.
