The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s brewing for Slade Bay/Boot Reef over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the forecast is pretty grim for the vast majority of the period. The only time we see any real size is around Saturday the 25th of July, but even then, the conditions are messy. So, there’s a long stretch of nothing much at all.
Let’s start with the first week. From Saturday the 18th right through to Friday the 24th, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves. We’re talking swell heights of 0.3ft to 1ft, with combined wave energy in the single digits (2 to 15). That’s not enough to ride. The wind is all over the place – cross-off, cross-on, glassy at times – but with no swell, it doesn’t matter. The water is a very unusual 68°, which is a massive 8° warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s a total write-off for surfing.
Then, on Saturday the 25th of July, we finally get a pulse. The morning shows a 5ft swell from the West, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy hits 205, which is moderate, but the wind is cross-off from the NW at 12 mph, keeping it clean. This is the closest thing to a standout in the whole window, but it’s not great. 5ft is at the upper limit for beginners, but with that short period, it’ll be a bit fat and crumbly. The afternoon gets messier with a 19 mph cross-shore wind, turning it lumpy.
Sunday the 26th drops back to 2ft, and the rest of the forecast through to Sunday the 2nd of August is back to tiny, weak surf with energy rarely breaking 100. The wind is mostly offshore or light, but the swell just isn’t there.
Honestly, this is a poor run for Slade Bay/Boot Reef. The only time you might get a wave is on the morning of the 25th of July, and even then, it’s a short-period, weak swell with a cross-off wind. It’s not worth getting excited about. If you’re desperate, you could scratch around for a knee-high wave, but that’s about it.
Rusty.
