The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next 16 days for Slade Bay/Boot Reef (reef). I gotta be straight with you—this stretch is mostly a frustrating one. The water temp is running about average for this time of year, so no surprises there, but the surf just isn’t cooperating most of the time.
We kick off Friday the 21st with tiny, weak swell around 2ft from the WSW, only 8 seconds apart, and a cross-off NNW wind at 12 mph. The combined energy is a measly 73 (weak), and it’s just poor surf conditions. That pretty much sums up the next week and a half. Saturday the 22nd starts glassy in the morning with a 1ft WSW swell, but it’s still too small to do anything with. Sunday the 23rd is even smaller at 0.3ft, even though it’s glassy. The whole week through to the 27th is a write-off—tiny waves, onshore or cross-onshore winds, and a lot of rain and storm risks. The wind really messes things up, especially on the 25th with a strong breeze at 25 mph from the ESE, making it a messy cross-shore.
Now, the one real standout that’s worth waiting for comes on Friday the 28th of August. The morning looks promising—a 5ft WSW swell with a 7-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the NNE at 12 mph. The combined energy jumps to 327 (moderate), and the conditions are described as good. That’s the best session on offer, but it’s still a week away, so keep an eye on the forecast. The afternoon gets a bit bigger at 6ft, but the wind swings to a strong cross-off from the WNW at 19 mph, which makes it harder to surf well.
After that, the weekend of the 29th and 30th sees some bigger swell—7ft on Saturday—but the wind turns cross-shore and cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. That size is getting too much for beginners, but the lack of clean wind means it’s not even good for experts. The 30th brings heavy rain and a strong onshore breeze. From the 31st onward, it’s back to small, weak surf and cross-shore winds, with nothing rideable until the 5th of September, when we’re down to 0.3ft again.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate, the Friday morning of the 28th is your best bet—clean, offshore, and a bit of push. The rest of the 16 days is a flat, windy, or rainy mess. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
