Table - best surf conditions forecast for Aberavon over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for Aberavon over the next few weeks.
To be straight with you, this is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day stretch where the surf just isn't going to show up in any meaningful way. The swell is tiny, and the whole period is full of poor surf conditions. There's no standout period or big swell on the horizon. The first session worth paddling out for doesn't really materialise. The whole 16 days is essentially a flat spell with only small, weak ripples.
Let's break it down. From Tuesday the 7th of July right through to Sunday the 22nd of July, we are stuck in a pattern of small, weak swell. The combined energy is mostly in the low double or single digits (ranging from 1 to 27), which is basically nothing. We're talking ankle-snappers at best around 0.7 ft to 2 ft from the WSW. The water is very unusually warm for this time of year, running about 5° warmer than average at 67°, but that's about the only thing worth getting excited about.
Early in the period, there are some glassy moments. Thursday morning the 9th looks dead flat and glassy, and Friday afternoon the 10th is also glassy, but with only 1 ft of weak, short-period swell (9 seconds). Same goes for Saturday the 11th – glassy but only 0.7 ft. The wind is often clean, coming from the east or ENE as a cross-offshore, but there's just no energy in the water to push a wave. For an exposed beach and reef setup like Aberavon, a long-period groundswell over 15 seconds would be ideal for a point or reef, but here it would break too straight. Not that we're getting any.
Later on, around the 13th through the 15th, the wind picks up from the east with a fresh breeze, but the swell is still microscopic (0.3 ft to 0.7 ft). There's a brief pulse of longer-period swell from the SW on the 13th and 14th (18-19 seconds) but the height is pitiful, so it's a tease at best. The end of the window, around the 21st and 22nd July, sees a slight increase to 2 ft, but it's onshore and choppy with a period of just 5 seconds, meaning no real push.
The bottom line: Aberavon is on a flat spell. There is simply no surf worthy of a recommendation. With this kind of small, weak swell and a beach setup, it might look more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, but for us wave hunters, it's time to check the forecasts again in a few days. Things can change.
Stay patient.
