The Lowdown
Right then, folks, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s brewing for Aberavon.
Gotta be honest, it’s looking pretty grim for the foreseeable. We’re in for a proper dry spell, with a long stretch of flat, weak conditions that aren’t worth the walk to the water. The first week is a total write-off. From Saturday the 18th right through to the afternoon of Thursday the 24th, we’re talking about tiny, 0.3ft to 1ft slop, with the combined energy barely registering a single digit (1 to 8). The odd glassy morning, like Monday the 20th, will look pretty, but there’s just no push to get you in. It’s a painful gap of about seven days before we see anything that even looks like a wave.
The first real glimmer of hope, and I mean the only one worth mentioning, is on Saturday morning the 25th of July. The swell finally bumps up to 4ft from the west (period 7 seconds), and the combined energy climbs to 154 – that’s moderate, but it’s something. However, the wind is a cross-shore from the northwest at 12 mph, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy. It’s a beach/reef/pier setup, so there might be a sneaky corner, but it’s not going to be clean. By the afternoon, the wind swings onshore and picks up to 19 mph, making it a lumpy, blown-out mess. That Saturday morning, despite the messy look, stands as the best of a bad bunch.
After that, the swell drops right back down to knee-to-waist high mush for the rest of the forecast, with the wind rarely playing ball. The best of the rest might be the morning of Thursday the 30th of July, with a tiny 0.7ft west swell, light easterly breezes, and clean conditions, but you’d be surfing ankle-biters.
One thing that is truly unusual is the water temperature. On the 18th, it’s at 68°, a massive 8° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a real anomaly – you’ll be in boardies or a spring suit for sure.
Honestly, keep your gear in the shed for the next week. The only real chance at a wave is that Saturday the 25th, and it’s a gamble. For a break like Aberavon, this kind of blank run isn’t that unusual, but it still stings. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but I wouldn’t be holding my breath.
Rusty.
