The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Aberavon's got cookin' for us over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – it's a flat spell to start. The first week or so is pretty much a write-off. We're looking at a long stretch of poor conditions with barely a wave to get excited about. The swell energy is weak, the wind's mostly cross or cross-on, and it’s all a bit messy. You're looking at a gap of several days here with nothing really worth paddling out for.
Now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Things start to get interesting towards the very end of the month and into September. The standout window looks to be around Monday, the 31st of August and into Tuesday, the 1st of September. We’ve got a solid pulse of SW swell building, pushing 6 ft with a reasonable 8 to 10-second period. The combined energy jumps right up, hitting 560 and then a hefty 1014 which is a real kick of power. The wind also looks to be blowing onshore on the 1st, which is a shame, but the sheer size and energy will make Aberavon a heavy one.
For the experts, the Monday the 31st afternoon and Tuesday the 1st of September morning are your best bets. That swell’s over 5 ft and getting up close to 8 ft, so it's not for the groms. It's a strong, powerful SW groundswell (period over 10 seconds) that will be hitting the exposed beach/reef/pier setup. It’ll be a handful but for the crew who know how to handle it, there's some serious grunt on offer. Just be aware, with that SW direction, it's almost right on the nose for Aberavon's optimum.
Before that, there’s a tiny glimmer on the 29th and 30th with 4 to 5 ft of weak 7-second swell, but the southerly winds will have it chopped up. Not worth the effort.
So, to sum it up: a long, quiet patch, then a proper swell shows up at the end. It’s not going to be clean, perfect waves, but there is size and power for the brave. Keep an eye on the late-month forecast.
Rusty.
