The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s cookin’ for Aberavon over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you: it’s gonna be a long, slow grind before we see anything worth paddling out for.
For the next week or so, don’t even bother waxing your board. We’ve got tiny waves and messy wind. The best of a bad lot might be Thursday morning the 21st of August when it goes glassy with a tiny 2ft from the WSW, but it's barely a ripple. There’s a stretch from now until the 26th or so where there’s just nothing doing, a real flat spell.
The first bit of hope shows up around Saturday morning the 30th of August. The swell starts to pick up with 5ft from the WSW, but the wind is a fresh NNW cross-off, so it could be clean. The combined energy is still ramping (290), so not massive but a sign of life. By Monday the 31st of August, we’ve got some serious size coming in, but it’s a mixed bag. The morning shows a 8ft WSW swell with a moderate cross-shore and a solid 1230 combined energy – that’s a heavy, powerful ocean. This is expert-only territory. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s a decent groundswell with some punch, but for a beach setup like this, that long period can make it break a bit straight and close out. The afternoon gets ugly with a fresh cross-onshore wind, so that window is tight.
Into the first week of September, Tuesday the 1st has a still-chunky 6ft WSW swell (644 energy) but the cross-shore wind is light, giving us “gentle cross-shore with slight cross-chop.” It’s still marginal, but if you’re an intermediate and you’re desperate, that might be the only window that’s not completely blown out.
Honestly, this whole outlook is a tough one. There’s no standout single day. If I had to pick the *least* bad option for experienced surfers, it’s Monday morning the 31st of August. That 8ft (over 8ft, it's expert only) from the WSW has real grunt, and the wind is only moderate cross-shore. It’ll be a battle getting out, but there could be a few bombs. For everyone else, keep an eye on the 1st of September morning.
Stay patient, the forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
