The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about Aberavon.
Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. The next few weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. The whole 16-day window is a write-off, with no real swell to speak of. There's a lot of flat, small, and messy conditions. It's one of those stretches where you're better off checking the forecast again in a few days, because it can't stay this boring forever.
The first half of the period is just sad. We're looking at tiny waves, mostly under 2 ft, through the 23rd of August. The wind is a bit better on the 21st with a glassy Friday morning, but there's nothing to push a surfer along. The combined swell energy is a pathetic 36 (moderate energy) at best, so it's a total non-starter.
Things try to pick up a little energy from the 28th of August, but the wind is all wrong. The swell from the WSW gets up to 4 ft by the afternoon of the 28th, with a weak 6 second period. The combined energy hits 135 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is a fresh onshore from the south, making it lumpy and messy. Not a surfer's wave.
The 30th of August sees the swell building to 5 ft to 6 ft with a 7 to 8 second period, and the combined energy climbs to 382 (moderate wave energy). But again, the wind is cross-onshore from the south. It's choppy, it's bumpy, and it's just not worth the paddle out at Aberavon.
The biggest pulse of the whole forecast comes on the 31st of August. We're looking at a 8 ft swell from the west with a long 10 second period. The combined energy is a massive 1961 (strong to very strong wave energy). That's a lot of water moving. But the wind is a strong onshore from the southwest, with a risk of thunderstorms. For a beach setup like Aberavon, that's going to be a complete mess. It's a strong candidate for kite surfing, but for a paddle surfer, it's a total no-go.
After that, it drops back down, with the wind continuing to be a problem. The 1st of September has a 4 ft swell from the west, but it's cross-onshore. The 4th of September has a 3 ft swell from the west, but a strong cross-onshore from the WNW, making it messy.
The truth is, there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The few days with any size have the wrong wind, and the days with good wind have no size. It's a blank run. That's just how it goes here sometimes. The forecasts can change, but right now, I'd save my energy.
Rusty.
