The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Aberavon’s got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks.

To be straight with you, it’s a pretty grim stretch ahead. The first ten days or so are a write-off. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly any surf worth paddling out for. From Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of the month, there’s a whole lot of nothing – tiny dribbles of weak, short-period swell mixed with onshore or cross-shore wind that’s gonna leave the surface messy. You’ll see a few clean mornings thanks to offshore breezes, but with wave heights mostly between 0.3 ft and 1.0 ft, there’s simply no energy to work with. The combined swell energy is tiny, barely reaching 32 (32) on the best of those days. It’s a frustrating blank run for sure.

The first real sign of life shows up on Thursday the 27th, but it’s not friendly. A quick jump to 7 ft (7 ft) from the WSW with a short, choppy period and onshore wind makes for a lumpy, stormy mess. The energy jumps to 527 (527) but with poor wind and a score of just 1 out of 10, it’s more of a washing machine than a surfable wave. For experienced surfers only, and even then, likely not worth the hassle.

Friday the 3rd of September sees the biggest energy spike of the forecast – a whopping 1173 (1173) combined energy. That’s a powerful 7 ft (7 ft) WSW groundswell with a long 11-second period. But here’s the catch: it’s accompanied by heavy rain and a strong 22 mph cross-shore wind. The setup is a beach/reef/pier, and with that much wind and size, it’s going to be blown out and lumpy. Honestly, this looks more like a day for the kite surfers to have a field day, rather than a paddle surfer’s dream.

The one standout to circle. After all that stormy nonsense, we finally get a window. On Friday the 4th of September in the morning, the stars align. A clean 4 ft (4 ft) WSW swell with a 9-second period rolls in, and the wind? It’s a light offshore breeze from the NE at just 3 mph. Glassy conditions. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, no major anomaly. That’s the best the forecast has to offer. The combined energy is a solid 208 (208), so there’s some push. It’s not a huge swell, but with clean, offshore conditions, Aberavon will be smooth and fun for intermediate surfers. Keep in mind, it’s a fairly consistent spot, but crowds are possible, so get out early. After that, the swell fades fast into the weekend with tiny, weak waves again.

So, if you’re keen, pencil in the morning of the 4th of September. The rest of the run? Not much to write home about. It’s one of those spells where the forecast can change, but right now, it’s a lot of waiting for one good morning.

Stay patient.
Rusty.
