The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, this time in feet. Look, this one’s a bit of a heartbreaker for Aberavon. There’s a big dry spell before anything on the horizon.
The water temp is about 69°, which is a lot warmer than usual for this time of year, so if you’re just keen for a swim, it's a winner. For waves, though, you’ve got almost nothing for the first week and a half. From now right through to the 25th of July, it’s flat. The energy readings are mostly in the single digits, so there’s no power behind anything. You’ll see clean conditions with the east wind, but the swell is near zero. It's frustrating.
We finally see a pulse on Saturday the 25th. It’s just a 2ft swell from the WSW, but it arrives glassy. The energy is still weak at 48, so these are tiny, weak waves. It builds a touch on the 26th to 3ft from the WSW, but the wind swings onshore, so it’s messy.
The best of a bad bunch comes on Monday the 27th of July. We get a 5ft to 5ft swell from the WSW, and the energy jumps to 327, which is the most power we'll see. The problem is the SSE wind puts us cross-onshore at Aberavon. For a beach break, that means bumpy, choppy waves. It’s also a short period of 7 seconds, so the waves will lack shape and punch. This is the highlight, but it’s a rough one.
After that, it drops back down. By the 28th and 29th, the wind is onshore and the swell is fading. By Wednesday the 29th, we’re back to 2ft of messy onshore slop. For the kite boarders, the windier, choppier days might look fun, but for us paddle surfers, it’s a lean stretch that's hard to get excited about.
Rusty.
