The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the cards for Aberavon over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you right from the start – the next week to ten days are looking pretty flat. We’ve got a long gap with no real surf to speak of, so don’t bother waxing up just yet. The good news is that there’s a proper pulse of swell on the horizon, but we’ve got to be patient.
For the first surf we’ll see in a while, aim for Wednesday, July 29th. The morning will see a clean, cross-offshore breeze with a small 5ft swell from the WSW. The combined energy will be moderate at 348, so there’s some push behind it. It’s a decent start, but the real standout is the afternoon. Things turn glassy, with an 8-second period 8ft swell from the WSW. That's a big jump in energy, hitting 819. For us at Aberavon, a beach/reef/pier setup, that size is getting towards the expert zone, but if you’re comfortable in that range, the conditions will be unreal with that glassy surface.
But the true pick of the whole run is Thursday, July 30th. The morning session is where it's at. We’re looking at a solid 8ft groundswell from the west with a 9-second period. The combined swell energy is a very strong 1112. The wind swings offshore from the ENE at only 6 mph, so you’re getting clean, lined-up waves. This is prime for experienced surfers. The afternoon will clean up and stay glassy, dropping a bit to a still-very-good 6ft from the west with energy at 567. It'll be a ripping day. Conditions keep going into Friday, July 31st, with a lighter 5ft from the west in the morning under a cross-offshore breeze, but the magic has faded a bit.
Think of it this way: expect flat, small, and poor conditions right through until the 28th. Then it fires up for the last three days of July, with Thursday the 30th being the absolute standout. The water temperature right now is a very unusual 69°F, which is far warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might not need the thickest wetsuit. Keep an eye on the long-range promise—it looks worth the wait.
Rusty.
