The Lowdown

G'day, it's Rusty here. Let me tell you, we're in a bit of a dry spell for Aberavon. Looking right across the next 16 days, there's no standout session, no hidden gem to chase. The honest truth is, it’s one of those quiet runs where you’d be better off polishing your board or catching up on chores.

Starting from now, the first couple of days are flat and messy. Monday the 17th has a tiny 2ft swell from the west, but it's being chewed up by a cross-onshore breeze. The combined swell energy is weak at just 23, and the water is a balmy 70°, which is a whopping 8° warmer than normal—very unusual for this time of year. Still, with poor surf conditions across the board, it's not worth a paddle.

We move into Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th with a bit more size, pushing up to 4ft, but the wind stays fresh and cross-onshore, turning the ocean into a lumpy, choppy mess. The combined swell energy climbs into the moderate range (172, then 181), but the wave comment says "poor surf conditions," and I can't argue with that.

Thursday the 20th stays uninspiring with a 3ft to 4ft swell and cross-shore winds. By Friday the 21st, things drop right off to just 1ft, and while we get a glassy moment in the morning, there's simply no power in the water. The combined energy is a paltry 24. The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd is even smaller, down to 0.7ft or 1ft, with some clean windows but barely a ripple to surf. The swell direction is WSW, which isn’t bad, but the size just isn't there.

The middle of the next week, from Monday the 24th to Wednesday the 26th, offers nothing. We're looking at 0.3ft to 2ft surf. There is one morning on the 25th with glassy conditions, but with a combined swell energy of just 9, you could paddle all day and get one ride. On the 26th, the swell bumps up a bit to 3ft and the energy hits 125, but it's onshore and messy.

The most interesting, and I use that word loosely, period comes right at the end of the run. On Friday the 28th of August, the swell jumps to 5ft from the WSW, with a moderate 10-second period showing some groundswell character. The combined energy is strong at 378, but the wind is cross-onshore again, keeping conditions "fairly choppy." It's the biggest swell of the whole stretch, but the quality just isn't there for a proper surf. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th stay in the 3ft to 5ft range, but the winds remain a problem—cross-shore or onshore.

Monday the 31st brings the biggest combined energy value of the entire period at 385, with a 5ft swell, but it's accompanied by a risk of thunderstorms and a fresh cross-onshore wind. For the first few days of September, the swell drops off again into the 2ft to 3ft range with onshore conditions.

Look, with just one break on the list and it being a beach/reef/pier setup exposed to the SW, we're not getting the right alignment. The wind is almost never offshore, and the combined swell energy, while moderate to strong at times, never pairs with clean conditions. Honestly, with the combination of size, strong cross-onshore wind, and the beach setup, this stretch looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. You can't force it. For now, keep the board in the bag and wait for the next proper swell.

Rusty.
