Table - best surf conditions forecast for Aberavon over the next 16 days.
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Aberavon over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’ll be honest with you – it’s a grim outlook for the next week or so. There’s barely a ripple to get excited about. We’re looking at a long, flat spell that runs from now right through until the morning of Thursday the 24th of July. Days and days of nothing doing, just tiny little slop that’s not worth paddling out for.
The only flicker of hope comes in the second week, on the morning of Friday the 25th of July. That’s a skinny window. The swell is coming in at 4 ft from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy of all swells directed here is moderate (248). What makes it interesting is the wind is glassy – dead calm, a light southerly at 3 mph. That’s a major positive, meaning the surf will be clean. It’s a bit of a gamble this far out, but it’s the only real chance we’ve got.
The water temperature is 68°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – a full 8°F above the long-term average. That’s very unusual.
For the rest of it, the surf is poor. The small windows around the 14th and 20th of July offer glassy conditions but with waves you can barely measure, so it’s not worth the trip. The bigger swell on the afternoon of the 24th hits 7 ft from the WSW, but it’s cross-onshore and choppy – that’s a write-off for paddle surfing, looks more interesting for the kite crew.
So, to sum it up: one standout morning on the 25th of July at Aberavon (beach/reef/pier), clean and glassy with 4 ft WSW swell. The rest is a long, flat dry spell. Keep your eye on that one, but don’t hold your breath for the rest.
Rusty.
