G'day, Rusty here. Alright, let's have a look at what's on offer for our stretch of coastline over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a slow start, that's for sure. We're looking exclusively at Compton Bay, an exposed, fairly consistent break that works best with a southwest swell. It's a beginner-friendly spot, which is good news, but don't be surprised if there's a few other folks out there—crowds can pop up sometimes. The water is sitting at a very unusual 66°F, which is a massive 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year. Proper tropical feels.
Right now, through the first week of July, it's pretty grim. We're stuck with tiny, weak waves—barely pushing 1 ft from the WSW with a short, bumpy period of 4 seconds. The combined swell energy is a measly 6, so there's nothing to get excited about. The winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things messy. There's a brief moment on the morning of Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th where it goes glassy, but the swell is still flat at 0.3 ft with almost no energy (1 to 3). You could paddle around, but you won't be riding anything.
This flat spell drags on through the entire first week and into the second. We see clean conditions with offshore or cross-offshore winds from the 10th to the 14th, but the swell is basically non-existent or just a tiny 0.3 ft pulse. The energy readings are in the 1 to 4 range. It's a long, frustrating wait.
Now, things start to stir a little around Friday the 17th of July. The morning shows a small 3 ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 6 seconds and moderate energy of 69. We've got a gentle offshore breeze from the NNE, which will clean it right up. The description says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions"—it's not a standout, but it's the first real sign of life after a long, flat run.
The real standout, and the one to circle on your calendar, is Monday the 20th of July. The morning session is where it's at. We're looking at a solid 7 ft swell out of the WSW with a 7 second period. The combined energy jumps right up to 436, which is a proper injection of power. The wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze from the east, and the overall conditions are described as favorable. Just a heads up though—at over 7 ft, this is getting into the territory for experienced surfers only. The beginners will want to sit this one out. The afternoon sees it bump up to 8 ft with even more energy (632), but the wind swings onshore, so the morning window is the clear winner.
Tuesday the 21st still has some good energy hanging around—6 ft to 7 ft from the WSW with moderate to strong energy in the 230-325 range—but the winds are lighter and less consistent, and the conditions are described as marginal. So, to be honest, the best bet on offer is that Monday morning session on the 20th. It's a bit of a way off, so keep an eye on the charts, but that's the one with the most promise.
Stay patient and keep the wax warm.
Rusty.
